Is that like some rule or some international dress code?
Don't the bartenders get cold being shirtless all the time. What happens when they have to go to the freezer to get more beer?

Beer isn't kept in a freezer. It's kept in cases, stocked into the bar cooler towards the back, and pulled forward as the cold ones leave.

They don't always.
I've only been to a few bars where they did this and even then it was only in the summer when it was very hot.
I have straight friends who manage a GLBT bar and bartend too and they don't work shirtless.

by Anonymous | reply 4 | October 3, 2011 12:10 AM |
What happens when they go in the cooler? What do you think happens, OP? Their nipples get hard like tiny little diamonds and all the old peeved hanging on the bar give them bigger tips.

Not where I go, but then...most are female. Would be nice though ;)
by Anonymous | reply 6 | October 3, 2011 12:15 AM |
What a ridiculous thread.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | October 3, 2011 12:16 AM |
Those bartenders must get cold behind the bar, since they are not wearing proper clothing for the job.
Someone should call the health department.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 3, 2011 12:19 AM |
For the same reasons that waitresses in non-gay bars always work topless.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 3, 2011 12:20 AM |
You rock, R9.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | October 3, 2011 12:22 AM |
waitresses don't work topless
by Anonymous | reply 11 | October 3, 2011 12:23 AM |
Duh, it's quite obvious. In the bars where the bartenders work shirtless they're always guys with hot bodies. That attracts patrons to the bar to ogle the bartenders and buy drinks.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | October 3, 2011 12:24 AM |
[quote]That attracts patrons to the bar to ogle the bartenders and buy drinks.
Yeah, on day release type patrons.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | October 3, 2011 12:28 AM |
TIPS, op! Although, I find it rather tacky when the bartenders are shirtless. Unless you're at a beach bar.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | October 3, 2011 12:28 AM |
What about a bartender with a resume a mile long, who doesn't have a hot body.
Isn't that discriminatory towards that bartender? He can do the work just as well, but being passed over cause he doesn't have a six pack abs.

[quote]Why Do Bartenders At Gay Bars Always Work Shirtless?
Why do people starting threads at DL ALWAYS exaggerate?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | October 3, 2011 12:29 AM |
Also why do women at hooters wear such tight shirts? Isn't that uncomfortable?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | October 3, 2011 12:34 AM |
R17 that is the uniform. And Hooters has been the subject of several class action lawsuits from unfair hiring practices
by Anonymous | reply 18 | October 3, 2011 12:38 AM |
Skin sells. Thread closed.

Need I chime in, darlin?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | October 3, 2011 1:25 AM |
They don't always.
I wish they always did.
Hot male bartenders are one reason to actually go out to a bar even if you don't know anyone there.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 3, 2011 1:29 AM |
OP is a 16 year old wanna be hag
by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 3, 2011 1:31 AM |
Gotta have something on your resume.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | October 3, 2011 1:36 AM |
Because they CAN.
Duh.
OP, did you have a brain tumor for dinner?
by Anonymous | reply 24 | October 3, 2011 2:25 AM |
The shirtless tenders used to be hot at G , what happened?
by Anonymous | reply 25 | October 3, 2011 2:28 AM |
G is over, R25.
Everybody's moved on - to Gym or the Hellsea bars...
by Anonymous | reply 26 | October 3, 2011 5:06 AM |
Hey, the U.S. needs some topless female bartenders....
I would so be there. Don't even care if it's a straight bar, I would still be there.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | October 3, 2011 5:12 AM |
Eldergay here. I worked at many SF clubs. I Beam, End up, Black and Blue, Buzbys on Polk. We were always asked to serve shirtless unless the liquor inspector caught us.
At the City, we were fined. In 1975 individually. $225 and that was a lot of $ back then.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | October 3, 2011 5:31 AM |
I prefer bars where the bartenders wear leather harnesses and black chaps with nothing hiding their treasures below. In San Francisco, this used to be the norm "South of Market". There's such a gigantic difference between seeing a hot buff body in a picture versus real life. If they need a shirt, make it a very tight black tee-shirt.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | October 3, 2011 5:43 AM |
I did it in college. Had to shave down every other day. You couldn't get on the floor until the owner, this 50 year old gay guy named Giles, checked you out. If you let Giles blow you from time to time you'd get an extra $250 in your check. He tried a ladies night on Tuesdays. Guys would get half off drinks if they brought their 'hag'. Women are very touchy and giggly.

OP I want to live where you are. My bartenders never go shirtless.

Why do people like OP have a need to think in sweeping generalizations? Would the question be less interesting is he asked why do bartenders at gay bars often work shirtless?
Of course, asking the question in that way makes it clear what a stupid question it is, since the answer is so obvious. So perhaps it is the driving need to start a thread that causes the brain to turn a dull question into an interesting question that is not based in reality?
by Anonymous | reply 39 | February 21, 2014 9:36 PM |
[quote] since the answer is so obvious.
It is not obvious to many people, which is why the OP asked.

[quote]It is not obvious to many people, which is why the OP asked.
Because OPs never ask stupid questions?
It is entirely obvious, unless you are a moron or an idiot troll.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | February 21, 2014 9:47 PM |
Shirtless bartenders likely don't get cold because of all the body heat in the bar.

Well it was discovered that Amy Adams is one.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | February 21, 2014 9:50 PM |
First of all bartenders in gay bars do not always work shirtless.
Those that do do it because it's sexy and the customers like it.
Some get cold. Some don't.
next!

I used to work at OW Bar on 58th in my 20s. Every Saturday night, the shirt HAD to come off. I hated it. I had a really good body (still do), but still, it was so uncomfortable. That said, I made about $700 a night when I did. For 6 hours of work. And lots of free shots.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | February 21, 2014 9:55 PM |
R46 the bad was outweighed by the good.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | February 21, 2014 9:57 PM |
First of all, I'll point out that this thread is three years old, and for some reason the Friday Afternoon Bump Troll decided to bring it back up. Second, I'll point out the broader reason: the bartenders go shirtless because it draws in more customers, because men are pigs and oglers. It's a mutually agreeable situation for all, even bartenders like R46, who of course *could* have quit his job to bartend at a straight bar but clearly preferred having the advantage of earning $700 a night.
Btw I fail to see why the liquor inspector in SF, of all places -- and in the '70s, no less! -- would be a hard-ass about bartenders being shirtless. It's not a cleanliness issue: bartenders are not cooks and do not the the insides of drinks in any way, so their state of dress should be irrelevant in that context. (And while we're on the subject: really, Americans are just way too fucking puritanical in the first place, hence the reason why so many gay bars have strippers but they're almost uniformly forbidden from dancing/stripping all-nude. Same goes for tittie bars: in most places the girls are either forbidden from going bottomless, or all-nude places have some sort of restrictions in place, e.g. they can't serve hard alcohol.)
by Anonymous | reply 47 | February 21, 2014 10:11 PM |
Word of warning...got a drink from one of those "shirtless bartenders" and found a chest/armpit hair in the drink. Think of that next time your at your local shirtless bar. gross.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | May 8, 2015 12:34 AM |
You know, I don't even notice them shirtless half the time.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | May 8, 2015 12:37 AM |
[quote]What about a bartender with a resume a mile long, who doesn't have a hot body. Isn't that discriminatory towards that bartender? He can do the work just as well, but being passed over cause he doesn't have a six pack abs.
Your premise is flawed. The unattractive person can not do the job as well because he will never be able to bring in as much money as a hottie with his shirt off.
It's a gay bar. If all someone wanted was to enjoy a great cocktail they would go elsewhere. Part of what your clientele wants when they go to a gay bar is to see attractive men, that is the business. Everyone has admitted it brings in more money.
I don't see how this isn't obvious to everyone.

Why Do Bartenders At Gay Bars Always Work Shirtless?
Because if they work pantless they would get arrested.
