Allton is married and has a daughter. He a radical right wing phobe of just about anything one might be afraid. You may have noticed his death warmed over appearance on TV recently. This is the result of adopting and eating pattern that that's supposed to help him live longer.
He is not a personalble person ad is best avoided.

His fan interaction guidelines are sort of amusing and seem perfectly reasonable.

by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 19, 2011 11:37 PM |
But it's not his private life, R15. He's donating money to an organization that is actively trying to stop gay marriage. That's no longer private and is totally a buzzkill as far as my enjoying his shows.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 19, 2011 11:43 PM |
Years ago he had his own forum at the Food Network site, where he posted regularly. Some of the posters were kind of unhinged, and I think that soured him on the fandom thing early on. IIRC, though, he was very gracious before the nutters got to him.

I enjoyed Alton and his show when it first aired many years ago. Then as the show grew more popular, we learned more about him.
I lost all respect for and interest in Alton after that. I'm not going to waste my time being a fan of someone who is part of an anti-gay religion.

by Anonymous | reply 45 | May 2, 2012 12:44 PM |
He always struck me as a fundamentally unhappy person -- a sort that's best avoided altogether.
That any reasonably intelligent adult would label himself a "born again" Christian, or switch religions with fuss and flourish is another dark sign of a most basic flaw.
And he's made his whole career of acting prickish and prickly.
One thing I don't fault him for is preferring that strangers not perform a laying on of hands (though how many legions line up to do this I can't imagine.) It's easy enough for a functional person to interrupt this act with with a decisive, "No, let's just shake hands, shall we?"
Strangers who want hugs are fucked up.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | May 2, 2012 1:05 PM |
I'm wrong about the wife being Asian.
r46, there was an Asian female assistant on the earliest low-budget version of his show, and I just assumed she was his wife. He seemed somewhat more intimate with her than I would have guessed if she were just an employee.

Whenever threads about Alton come up I repeat this since it's one of the few real bits of gossip I have (sad) but my boyfriend sat next to him in first class on a flight a couple of years ago wicked early in the morning and Alton chugged bourbon drink after bourbon drink the whole time. But he kept to himself, I guess.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | May 2, 2012 1:47 PM |
R48, are you referring to "W" who is the gadget guru that Alton (comically) spars with on the show? In a behind the scenes thing, they explain that she's actually Alton's longtime chiropractor and that she had no prior acting experience. He cast her because she has the polar opposite personality of the "W" character and he thought it would be funny to cast a sweet, laid back person as an uptight jerk.

by Anonymous | reply 60 | May 13, 2012 11:20 PM |
r60 why are you shouting? Jesus.
I'm so conflicted about this guy. Off hand- I LOVED his show. Haven't never been taught anything about cooking growing up, I learned so much from his show. It really was a building block for me to get into the kitchen and start learning about cooking. I loved his personality on the show. To some it seems pompous and pedantic but to me he was just geeky and obsessed with details like a nerd would be. Like I can be when I'm passionate about something.
From what I've read in interviews and on his (now defunct) blog, I like this man. He supports openly supports learning, history, and SCIENCEâ which a conservative fundamentalists [italic]never [/italic] do. There is something about how he talks about political issues and people and he [italic] -doesn't- [/italic] talk about his religion which makes me believe he isn't some pompous xtian right wing asshole that people suspect just because he is 'born again'.
I'd like to believe he isn't homophobic and a genuinely good person who happens to belong to a shitty church, probably because it was his families/mother's/wife's church. It happens. Perhaps he's just a Christian- in the good sense of the word- as someone who believe in Christ.
I dare anyone to find a direct quote from him, with a source, that is actually anti-gay.
That said, he also comes off as a bitter repressed closeted queer who scared shitless of his own sexuality when he flames up in bitchy little comments on twitter.
I still like the man.

Bitterness and anger are expressions of self-loathing. He did say on twitter once, that he hated himself. If that's true - it would be good thing to quit drinking.
He also strikes me as someone with anxiety and an hint of OCD and probably battles with depression- hence the anger issues. I watched him on Ellen once and he couldn't stop talking he was so wound up.
His twitter feed is sometimes hilarious because he just takes the piss out of everyone, fans and celebrities alike. His catty comebacks read like a Datalounge regular.

Alton and Ina do not like each other. A few years back a tiff developed between them over whether you add salt and pepper to the mixture of scrambled eggs. Alton said NEVER, you sprinkle it on after and Ina said always put in the mix. Ina made some snarky comments on her show that were obviously directed at Alton.
I get the impression from The Next Food Network Star that Giada is crazy for him though.

r69. He cooks but he's never run a kitchen. He has had some training - he did go to culinary school and I'm pretty sure he can write his own recipes but his show is all about testing out different ideas and finding the best one. He never claimed to be a chef.
But he's not a "personality" like Rachel Ray or Sandra Lee. He can actually cook and his recipes are pretty darn awesome.

by Anonymous | reply 75 | August 12, 2012 10:23 PM |
R61, I'd also like to think that he's a born-again Christian simply because his parents raised him that way, like Stephen Colbert is Catholic because he was born into a Catholic family. But Brown was 30 years old when he adopted fundamentalist Christianity:
[quote]In 1992, Brown says, he found God, or maybe God found him, but he blundered away until he became a born-again Christian. "The single biggest life-changing thing for me is I just got baptized last year. Everything else pales in comparison to acceptance of Christianity. That's number one."
So there's no excuse for it! I do still enjoy his shows anyway & he makes me laugh, but I am mystified by this aspect of his personality.

An interview he did on TV shortly after his dramatic weight loss (I think it for NY Times TV) revealed him to be a humorless, self-righteous prig. In a short amount of time he managed to put down most TV viewers, overweight people, other chefs, and by extension, Jews (with an unfunny joke about how awful bagels are for you, building the pyramids vs shopping on Fifth Avenue, etc.)

I find it interesting that a self-confessed "quasi-celebrity" should be so obsessed with his own social status that he would publish, and expect the world around him to adhere to, something that few megastars would have the arrogance to write. I never saw Liz Taylor or Jackie O issue a proclamation regarding how we "citizens" must treat her.
Calling the rest of us "'citizens'...(that's celebrity-speak for non-famous people)" tells us exactly who he is and how he would like to segregate us.
Face the facts, Alton Brown: Most of the pathetic scum that circulate around you will never read that self-satisfied crap you call etiquette. You willingly bought into the bargain of lowbrow cable-fame, and you will take both the emoluments and the consequences.

Who the hell cares what his politics are? I don't tune in his shows to see where he stands on abortion or the Affordable Care Ac!

Please don't say he is gay. I don't want him to be one of us! Why does it appear some of us do not like Ina? I do.

but why is he so loved by both food network higher-ups and fans?
He's UGLY and REPULSIVE to look at and his on-camera persona is very annoying, know-it-allish and condescending. He has no appeal but he's been around for so long.

Welp, I love him on Cutthroat Kitchen. He's funny.
by Anonymous | reply 114 | December 29, 2014 9:14 AM |
He is religious and homo in denial.

R115 he's horrible. and the Food Network wonders why their ratings are declining?
by Anonymous | reply 116 | December 29, 2014 5:11 PM |
Wow I guess people aren't allowed to have an opinion these days unless it is compatible with what you want. What is that called again huh oh yeah discrimination the same thing you say you want to stop. Amazing how that works.

I only liked him in "Good Eats". I don't care about all the other shitty shows he's done.

Another freeper invasion? I see the right wing cunt @R117 bumped up an old thread to defend her idol.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | May 27, 2015 8:16 AM |
r117 is a special little retarded snowflake who thinks expressing an anonymous opinion on a message forum is the same thing as discrimination.
r117 needs to die in a kitchen grease fire.

Brown is decently watchable, but his real life dickishness has been well known for a long time.
Also, R117 has things so utterly ass backwards ... try going to freeperville and posting even a slightly contrary opinion. You'll be banned so fast it'll make your whole body spin.

All the people who have probably gotten sick from eating raw eggs in one of his recipes might have an opinion.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | May 27, 2015 4:41 PM |
One of his more religious interviews back when he sort of "took over" from Emeril had him saying he had done some things his wife had to forgive him for. Sounded suspicious.
Then I found out that church he goes to has some "pray the gay away" courses. Also suspicious.
Now? I find out he just got DIVORCED.
That freakishly wrinkled, condescending asshole is closeted and it's eating him from the inside out.

R123,
I always thought he was gay. Pinged to high heaven for me. But I was thrown by the wife and kids for a while.

One kid, not kids. Their daughter must be in high school by now.
Here's one of my favorite Alton "Totally Heterosexual" Brown quotes:
[quote]SB: Do you watch reality food TV like Hell’s Kitchen or Top Chef?
[quote]Alton: I don’t like them. I think Gordon Ramsey is wussy. I’d like ten minutes in the back of a dark taxi with him.

I must be going out of my mind. I could've sworn he used to be one of the guys from Queer Eye...

If you ever watched "Good Eats", Alton Brown constantly used the word "lube" when referencing using oil or butter in a pan to prevent food from sticking. He says lube several times an episode.
