Hugh O'Brian

Sooooooooooooooo hot in "Love Has Many Faces" as the immoral gigolo wearing the skimpiest trunks and the tightest white pants (almost always at least shirtless).

He never married until he was in his eighties. Is he family?

Lucky you, OP

The Western TV stars of Hugh's era: Clint Walker, Robert Conrad, Robert Horton, Robert Fuller, Doug McClure, Ty Hardin, James Garner...are simply the hunkiest, hairiest men in the history of Hollywood.

TRIVIA: Did you know that Hugh is the youngest drill instructor in Marine Corp history ?

There's a series of photographs from around 1954 that appeared in one of those old movie fan magazines showing a bunch of young male actors hanging out for the day at the Finlandia Baths in Hollywood. Gayest looking shit you've ever seen. Hugh is likely the only one still living but it featured Rock Hudson, Tony Curtis, John Bromfield and a few others cavorting in the sauna etc...

I interviewed Hugh O'Brian about 15 years ago. In November, I went to an exhibit of Tyrone Power memorabilia at the Hollywood Museum, and there were a lot of celebrities there. Over in the corner a man was sitting in a wheelchair. He looked like a mountain man with long gray hair and he was quite elderly. Everyone was posing for pictures with him so I asked someone who it was - Hugh O'Brian. The person I was with insisted that I say hello and remind him that we had talked. So I did. I had to scream because he's totally deaf. He did seem to have all his marbles. His wife was there with him. He did not look like he did in Love Has Many Faces.

by Anonymousreply 22January 8, 2015 6:41 AM

When I was 10 he was in a travel company performing 1776 and he crouched down next to my aisle seat waiting for the lights so he could rush to the stage. Nice looking man.

I always presumed that I caught The Ghey from Hugh O'Brian. I was never ever a fan, but my folks took me on my birthday to a performance of "Mr. Roberts" at the "Shady Grove Music Fair," which, at that time, was in a tent.

I was thrilled at my first experience seeing a play. (I think I was about six.)

Afterwards, my parents made a big effort to get me backstage to meet a celebrity, and, sure enough, we found ourselves all by ourselves with Mr. O'Brian. I wasn't particularly thrilled, but, for the first time in my life, I had some sense of a kindred spirit.

Ever since, about once every ten years or so, I check out what he's up to, and find that he's unmarried and runs some kind of foundation for boys. My six-year-old self would not have been surprised.

by Anonymousreply 37January 10, 2015 5:16 AM

Like Rod Taylor and James Garner, he had that late 50s/early 60s hairy-chested affability that just doesn't exist any more in leading men.

On the Rod Taylor thread I included Sean Connery in the group as well but I'm not sure he was really ever quite affable....maybe because he never appeared in comedies.

For me, they were all far sexier than Rock Hudson.

by Anonymousreply 38January 10, 2015 12:50 PM

Or did he make some comedies? I don't remember any.

I've always wondered about him too. Such a hot guy back in his prime.

And in that book interview at R10, one of the comments says, "I met Hugh in 1979. He was 55. Greenwich Village, NY. Need I say more?"

And he was definitely not at his ninetysomething best the day of that interview. Just two years prior to that he was at an event, and he was styled more. Hey, he still has his hair and is cogent.

by Anonymousreply 68September 5, 2016 3:41 PM

Except for the elderly paunch, he actually looks terrific in r10 for a 90 year old. His full head of tousled silver hair is beautiful. And though his speech is slow, he's totally cogent and seems to have a very good memory.

I think it's just the initial image of him in the wheelchair in marine fatigues, with the headphones (I assume as some kind of hearing aid) and the marine cap pulled way down on his head, that's a bit off-putting. But if you really watch the interview, once the cap is off. he looks great!

by Anonymousreply 69September 5, 2016 3:43 PM

[quote] Hugh O'Brian (no relation to the child star Clay O'Brien) was one of the few beefcake actors of the 1950s not discovered by gaydar-proficient talent agent Henry Willson -- although he was rumored to be gay. He just wanted to be discovered for his talent, not for his biceps and bulge. A high school athlete and former Marine, he began acting in 1948, and appeared in a steady stream of B-actioners, mostly cowboy and war flicks, through the 1950s.

Hugh was a VERY exceptional looking, classically handsome man. Agree with R6. O'Brian more than held his own with contemporary cowboy actors. Not an easy accomplishment, but one O'Brian managed quite well. The dimpled chin took him to that upper echelon of Hollywood Hotness. RIP.

I'm old enough to remember that he seemed to skirt any issues of Is he gay? in the 1950ss and 1960s , unlike Rock and Tab and Richard Chamberlain. and despite the fact that he wasn't married back then. It wasn't until he actually married in his elder years that his sexual identity was questioned. Why did the gossips leave him alone? Was he straight?

Huge Hugh bump! We must never forget him.

r132 Agree!

R131 Apparently someone has a story from Greenwich Village late '70s. I wish they'd spill. I have an interview with O'Brian penned by gossip columnist, Earl Wilson, from 1975. O'Brian was in NYC then as well. Wilson apparently asked Hugh why he's never married. (He would have been 50 then.)

[quote] O'Brian has been picked on by married journalists because he's a bachelor .... Why hasn't Hugh married? He hasn't found the right one. He frankly added, "A couple of people haven't wanted me either. I would hope that one day I would find one to share what I have worked so hard for. Meanwhile I keep visiting the library."

"People?" "One?" .. That's like the good ol' generic pronoun game.

I hear he was a gay

by Anonymousreply 135June 7, 2017 7:58 AM

THE most handsome and sexiest man I've ever seen on screen. Bar none. Hope he really did like guys. RIP, Hugh.

Is he related to Hugh Beaumont?

by Anonymousreply 137June 7, 2017 4:32 PM

Shirtless in Wyatt Earp - check out an episode called "The Manly Art" about a crooked prize fighter who comes to town Hugh ends up stripping off and fighting him. Very hot!

by Anonymousreply 138August 21, 2018 4:40 PM

I'm sure I saw (maybe in eBay) a photo (maybe photoshopped) of the classic Wyatt Earp publicity shot on an old west wooden sidewalk with his rifle resting on his hip, but Hugh was in a speedo wearing only his boots. Anyone else remember this? Anyone know where to find it? I'm sure I'm not fantasizing, but OMG it was hot!

What does it matter now? He's dead yes?

Stop this appropriation! First pussy, then cunt, now quim. People should stick to their own genitals.

Sorry r142

by Anonymousreply 144November 20, 2018 2:47 PM

When you say he was "Hot," by that I take it you mean his temperature ran higher than 98.6 degrees.

Married in his eighties? Why how who?

by Anonymousreply 146July 18, 2019 9:01 AM

Good God, that woman interviewer at R10. Was she a stroke victim?

by Anonymousreply 147July 18, 2019 9:23 AM

Smart move to change his name from Hugh Krampe to Hugh O'Brian.

by Anonymousreply 148July 18, 2019 9:26 AM

He could really pack it into a pair to tight slacks.
