RIP Liz. So sad.

by Anonymousreply 12March 23, 2011 1:10 PM

Uh oh. Rival threads. This will end in tears.

by Anonymousreply 13March 23, 2011 1:11 PM

It was to be expected, but sad nonetheless.

by Anonymousreply 14March 23, 2011 1:11 PM

RIP beautiful. I love you.

Diamonds can only bring a gal so much luck . . .

by Anonymousreply 16March 23, 2011 1:13 PM

RIP, and you can't say she didn't make the most of the time she had.%0D %0D

by Anonymousreply 17March 23, 2011 1:13 PM

Who could top her on next year's Oscar death montage?

by Anonymousreply 18March 23, 2011 1:14 PM

I missed the pkg about her on NBC, but caught the tail-end. Matt and Ann were saying "she was 79," as though they were correcting the reporter in the package. Did the reporter say she was 78? If so, I'm guessing they put the package together before she was even dead. How tacky of them.

by Anonymousreply 19March 23, 2011 1:14 PM

SHE'S DEAD. DIED. She sends her love.

by Anonymousreply 20March 23, 2011 1:14 PM

Where's Von Ryan now?

by Anonymousreply 21March 23, 2011 1:15 PM

RIP

by Anonymousreply 22March 23, 2011 1:16 PM

The last of the great ones - sorry Olivia and Joan don't count. End of an era.

by Anonymousreply 23March 23, 2011 1:17 PM

The last REAL star. RIP Liz

by Anonymousreply 24March 23, 2011 1:19 PM

Who's next?

by Anonymousreply 25March 23, 2011 1:19 PM

Talk about tougher than a boiled owl. %0D %0D The phrase "the end of an era" is rescued from cliche when applied to her death.%0D %0D She truly was "The Last Star."

by Anonymousreply 26March 23, 2011 1:19 PM

She was the ultimate movie star. Truly the last of Hollywood's golden era.

by Anonymousreply 27March 23, 2011 1:21 PM

Others from that era remain, but she truly was the last of the greats.

by Anonymousreply 28March 23, 2011 1:22 PM

Now she can be reunited with her dear, dear friend, sweet Michael Jackson.

Oh, no! He's in Hell.

by Anonymousreply 29March 23, 2011 1:25 PM

Can't wait to read the stats of all her various illnesses and hospital time. What's that line in STEEL MAGNOLIAS, about how she suffered more than any human being ever?

by Anonymousreply 30March 23, 2011 1:26 PM

I actually gasped when I read this-and I'm not even a fan.

by Anonymousreply 31March 23, 2011 1:26 PM

RIP Lizzie

by Anonymousreply 32March 23, 2011 1:27 PM

Where were you when you heard the news of this tragedy?

by Anonymousreply 33March 23, 2011 1:27 PM

TOLD YA!

by Anonymousreply 34March 23, 2011 1:30 PM

What R24 said-- the last real great star.%0D I have a bootleg video from her Broadway performance in THE LITTLE FOXES. Have never watched it. Think I will watch it tonight.%0D I wonder what films TCM will run on the day that network remembers her?%0D %0D RIP

by Anonymousreply 35March 23, 2011 1:30 PM

The sky was so violet this morning.

by Anonymousreply 36March 23, 2011 1:30 PM

Imagine the eventual auction?%0D %0D Who will get her controversial Van Gogh?%0D %0D Will her kids write books?%0D %0D Oh the drama!

by Anonymousreply 37March 23, 2011 1:31 PM

[quote]I'm guessing they put the package together before she was even dead. How tacky of them.

Honey, the press has put together obits of major celebrities before their time for centuries now. It's no secret. How do you think they got all those clips together ten minutes after she died? And Elizabeth has been seriously ill for years now.

by Anonymousreply 38March 23, 2011 1:31 PM

It's all over now.

by Anonymousreply 39March 23, 2011 1:31 PM

Gloria Wandrous: Mama, face it: I was the slut of all time.

by Anonymousreply 40March 23, 2011 1:32 PM

It's hard to believe she's dead. It seems like she's been around forever; a star since she was 12, 2 Oscars, all those husbands and affairs, all those scandals, all those illnesses, all those diamonds, all those embarrassing public displays while drunk or stoned. It seems like she's been around for a hundred years. %0D %0D I wonder what will happen to all her fabulous jewelry? I hope it auctioned off and the proceeds given to charity.

by Anonymousreply 41March 23, 2011 1:32 PM

R53, I was in the late to work but I stopped in the deli anyway to get my breakfast when my Blackberry vibrated with the CNN Breaking news email!

by Anonymousreply 42March 23, 2011 1:33 PM

Gloria Wandrous: Command performances leave me quite cold. I've had more fun in the back seat of a '39 Ford than I could ever have in the vault of the Chase Manhattan Bank.

by Anonymousreply 43March 23, 2011 1:33 PM

She really was the last MOVIE STAR.

I think we especially owe her a huge debt of gratitude for the lion's work she did starting and supporting AMFAR, not to mention just granting her star power to demystify and undemonize (not really a work I know) AIDS.

by Anonymousreply 44March 23, 2011 1:33 PM

"I'm guessing they put the package together before she was even dead. How tacky of them."

Considering how often Taylor was at death's door prior to day, it would be foolish not to be prepared.

by Anonymousreply 45March 23, 2011 1:33 PM

R38, then perhaps they should've quickly went through the package to edit her age.

by Anonymousreply 46March 23, 2011 1:36 PM

First, Libya - now, this!

by Anonymousreply 47March 23, 2011 1:37 PM

Oh, dear... R38 "should've went"

I have a friend who is an anchorman for local news and we just had this conversation Sunday. He told me most news organizations have "death packages" ready to go on major celebs and all the old or local ones. He has a few that he says have been sitting in the can for years but could be tweaked and run with about 10 minutes notice.

by Anonymousreply 51March 23, 2011 1:40 PM

Cleopatra: You come before me as a suppliant. Antony: If you choose to regard me as such. Cleopatra: You will therefore assume the position of a suppliant before this throne. You will kneel. Antony: I will *what*? Cleopatra: On-your-knees! Antony: You dare ask the Proconsul of the Roman Empire? Cleopatra: I *asked* it of Julius Caesar. I *demand* it of you!

by Anonymousreply 52March 23, 2011 1:41 PM

I imagine her riding on Knut towards the pearly gates of heaven.

by Anonymousreply 53March 23, 2011 1:44 PM

Duh, r51. Is that news to you?%0D %0D "It's hard to believe she's dead"%0D %0D No, it's not. She was sick and looked like hell for years, and lately was very THIN. Not her natural state.

by Anonymousreply 54March 23, 2011 1:44 PM

"Did the reporter say she was 78?"%0D %0D The voice over said she was 77. This is emblematic of reporting these days- shoddy. Any Google look-up could have clued him in.

by Anonymousreply 55March 23, 2011 1:45 PM

Drama queen of drama queens, she will be missed

by Anonymousreply 56March 23, 2011 1:47 PM

Interesting that Mike Todd died on almost the same date, March 22nd, 1958.

Archie Bunker:%0D %0D "That dame would do anything to drive the world crazy."%0D %0D How true!

by Anonymousreply 62March 23, 2011 1:56 PM

After reading her book about her jewels, I have to believe what her critics (such as Cecil Beaton who loathed the ground she walked on) said: she came across as a massive and coarse vulgarian. So the talk that she did destroy Richard Burton's career (in terms of fulfilling his potential as a great actor) was believable to me.

I suppose her AIDS work makes up for it.

by Anonymousreply 63March 23, 2011 1:57 PM

Just so you know, Esther Williams hinted in an on-line interview a few years ago that Elizabeth Taylor was actually OLDER than everyone thought, and she pointed out that MGM tried to lie about her own age but because she had swimming records before she became a star they were not able to do so. %0D %0D I suppose the biographies will be flooding out soon enough.%0D %0D Now is when I have to say we need Larry King back - he would have done at least 2 shows on her death. %0D %0D Who would have thought Mickey Rooney would outlast her!!!

by Anonymousreply 64March 23, 2011 1:58 PM

[quote] Just so you know, Esther Williams hinted in an on-line interview a few years ago that Elizabeth Taylor was actually OLDER than everyone thought

Not sure how that's possible as she virtually grew up on screen from the age of 10 on.

by Anonymousreply 65March 23, 2011 2:02 PM

If anyone can be rightfully called a 'living legend,' it was Elizabeth Taylor. And she was it over and over and over again. Think of all the seismic events of her life--this woman was truly a goddess and the stuff of myth.

by Anonymousreply 66March 23, 2011 2:02 PM

[quote]she came across as a massive and coarse vulgarian

Yeah, and was there anything at all interesting about her? I watched an interview and I might as well have been watching Marge, the lady that played bridge with my grandmother.

by Anonymousreply 67March 23, 2011 2:02 PM

R64, Larry King is on CNN right now, sounding hungover, and says they had put togther a special on her life with appearances on his show.%0D

by Anonymousreply 68March 23, 2011 2:03 PM

R65........MGM said she was 10, but she wasn't. Not too hard to figure out now is it?

by Anonymousreply 69March 23, 2011 2:04 PM

So how old was she really? How many years did she shave off? 2? 5?

by Anonymousreply 70March 23, 2011 2:06 PM

Never liked the tacky cow. Her voice alone sounded vulgar.

by Anonymousreply 71March 23, 2011 2:07 PM

Margaret "Maggie" Pollitt: You know what I feel like? I feel all the time like a cat on a hot tin roof.

Brick Pollitt: Then jump off the roof, Maggie. Jump off it. Cats jump off roofs and land uninjured. Do it. Jump.

Margaret "Maggie" Pollitt: Jump where? Into what?

Thank God! This is a day we need Larry! I hope they preempt Piers Morgan and let Larry do his thing. Actually, they should let Piers talk about Japan and Lybia, and then put Larry on for two hours with Elizabeth and a round table discussion. It's like sitting shiva.%0D %0D I feel like a member of my family has died. A beloved old Aunt! I adored her.%0D %0D Maybe they can put Larry on before Piers? Or run Larry on HLNs before Joy and then dovetail into a twofer with Larry and Joy and guests. Shit! I should be producing this.

by Anonymousreply 73March 23, 2011 2:13 PM

"I'm guessing they put the package together before she was even dead. How tacky of them."

The NY Times obituary is linked below. It's credited to Mel Gussow, who died 6 years ago. That may be slightly tacky.

I wonder if Drudge is gay- he has a beautiul picture of her on his site under the heading THE LAST STAR.

by Anonymousreply 75March 23, 2011 2:15 PM

"If I had known that first night we had spent together how our love was going to help destroy my career, and, for a time, my life, if I had known how much pain my love for Elizabeth was going to bring to me, I still wouldn't have hesitated."

by Anonymousreply 76March 23, 2011 2:17 PM

"Actually, they should let Piers talk about Japan and Lybia, and then put Larry on for two hours with Elizabeth and a round table discussion. It's like sitting shiva."%0D %0D Exactly, and enough already with Libya and Japan. This story is far more interesting to Americans.

by Anonymousreply 77March 23, 2011 2:19 PM

Beaton's description of her when photographing her at the Rothschild's ball is so acid: "a great thick revolting mass of femininity in its rawest", a "monster" with "fat, coarse hands" and the breasts "of a peasant woman suckling her young in Peru". Admittedly, she does resemble a jewish courtesan from the Third Empire with Alexandre's greasy curls stuck all over her head. I think the shrew she played in Taming Of The Shrew was probably closer to her real life married self. And it's hard to forget that portrait that the Daily Mail (or was it the Evening Standard) leaked in her last years of the tacky goings on in her house with the recorded birdsong etc, and where she was rogered by any who would have her and nicknamed The Old Mattress.

by Anonymousreply 78March 23, 2011 2:20 PM

Why can't we just send Piers to Libya or Japan?

by Anonymousreply 79March 23, 2011 2:25 PM

by Anonymousreply 83March 23, 2011 2:36 PM

What a extraordinary woman...and a great friend to gay people.

by Anonymousreply 84March 23, 2011 2:37 PM

[quote]Actually, they should let Piers talk about Japan and Lybia

Is that plural for "labia"?

by Anonymousreply 85March 23, 2011 2:39 PM

Thank God for DL, not one of the men and women in my office have even mentioned her death! I know some of them get CNN Breaking nws emails but they are just focusing on work instead of discussing her life and her films and her glamour.

by Anonymousreply 86March 23, 2011 2:46 PM

I'm really, really touched by this. Some stars are like family. They've alwasy been there. Playing a 'role' in your life, in a strange way.%0D %0D I once saw her at a party and she glittered and glowed. I once saw Queen Elizabeth II go by in a carriage when she was a much younger woman and it was similar. Really.%0D %0D The work she did for aids. The way she stood up for us when no one else cared or could be bothered and the way she stuck with it until the end. %0D %0D Beautiful inside and out.

by Anonymousreply 87March 23, 2011 2:51 PM

This is just tragic. I can't stop sobbing.

by Anonymousreply 88March 23, 2011 2:53 PM

So sad that this happened on Perez Hilton's birthday.

by Anonymousreply 89March 23, 2011 2:56 PM

I saw the package on GMA very touching, well put together, but it was a bit obvious they had it made in advance and waiting around for the announcement.

Switched over to Today and the VO guy in their package said she was 77, Matt and Ann quickly corrected to say 79. Did they have that package sitting around for 2 years?

I'm young so my memory of her is mostly from The Flintstones Movie and the White Diamonds ads. She always had a sense of regal sophistication that I admired.

RIP Liz, may you stay a diamond forever.

by Anonymousreply 90March 23, 2011 2:59 PM

She should have made 100.

by Anonymousreply 91March 23, 2011 3:00 PM

R51 (and others), I had a friend who worked at "Entertainment Tonight" about twenty years ago. He said they had pre-produced bios of virtually every celebrity who mattered packaged and ready to go if needed. He said they called that aisle "Death Row."

by Anonymousreply 92March 23, 2011 3:02 PM

One of the few times (maybe only) the death of a movie star has made me cry. I guess I grew up with her, loving her movies, adoring her self-deprecating humor and of course mesmerized by her beauty.%0D %0D Read the NY Times obit (www.NYTimes.com) those of you who don't know her life real well. Great quotes from her- one of my favorites in the article, not exactly: "she made both good taste and bad taste equally meaningless", as for her being made fun of by Joan Rivers later in life for being fat she is quoted as not minding because "it didn't get me where I live".%0D %0D For all her vulgarity (for which she was the first to own with delight- when told she was vulgar she said, "I know, but you wouldn't have me any other way, would you?") and drama and excess- I believe her heart was always in the right place- and she never took herself seriously except in the context of HIV. In the end she used her great fame and wealth to help others which in my book is the best use of fame and of course wealth.%0D %0D Another great quote when asked why she married so many times "beats the hell out of me".%0D %0D Great broad, great beauty, great movie star and cannot wait to see all the movies that will be playing on cable. I adored her-

Rhoda was with there and they both got punchy; they ended up writing a tasteless obituary for somebody, I can't remember who. But the person died unexpectedly and their tasteless obituary got read on the air by Ted Baxter. It was a funny episode.%0D %0D

by Anonymousreply 95March 23, 2011 3:13 PM

RIP Liz

by Anonymousreply 96March 23, 2011 3:14 PM

"But the person died unexpectedly and their tasteless obituary got read on the air by Ted Baxter. It was a funny episode."%0D %0D Ted: "Wee Willie Williams is dead, at 110. For a long time, Wee Willie Williams was the oldest living citizen in Minneapolis. There were other citizens in Minneapolis who were older; however, they happen to be dead. When last interviewed, Wee Willie had no immediate plans for the future, but hoped to include traveling, gardening...and breathing. Wee Willie had two main hobbies, which were whittling, and going down to the bus station and not doing anything. He also enjoyed playing his favorite little game, which he called 'ignoring people'. How it was played was, no matter what anyone would say to him, he would turn his head away, and stare off into space. But look at it this way; now he can play it even better because he doesn't have to worry about blinking. This is Ted Baxter saying good night and good news!"

I know she was old and sick, but hearing about her death made me really sad. For all the scandal, the thing I will always remember most about Elizabeth Taylor is that when I was a little kid and AIDS was a huge taboo, she made a stand to support sufferers and raise money. She was still one of the biggest celebrity names in those days, it was a huge deal. She was a compassionate woman and that is a wonderful thing. She will be missed.

No A place in the sun?

by Anonymousreply 146March 23, 2011 6:50 PM

Oh god. Now I have an aunt all over me because I posted about Liz's death on my FB wall and said that "...she had more soul than the so-called Christian conservatives who would rather see millions of people die than dig deep and show some compassion." Or something like that.

She's taken offence and has turned my Elizabeth Taylor tribute into a nasty hate thread! Who are these Christians that just want to revise history when it shows them in a bad light? I was there. For 8 years, Reagan didn't dare to even say the word "AIDS" it was thought to be so unpopular with the core Christian conservative base of the Republican party, who had just been recruited. That's the way it was.

Should I just delete her comments??

That tribute Elizabeth made to Barbra made me cry. As wacked as the old broad could be, she was so sincere, so full of love and so kind it just comes off the screen. Taylor will be remembered for many things (not all of them "flattering" because, despite her great beauty she was a FULLY realized human being, warts and all) but she will always be remembered as a kind woman who was an humanitarian. She put a face on HIV/AIDS and was one of our strongest allies during the darkest years. %0D %0D Her legacy will be warm and wonderful, overall, and I am so glad.

I remember an interview with her saying she wanted to be buried next to Burton when her time came ... but that would hardly seem possible now? It would need to be a very secure resting place - Charlie Chaplin was dug up (also in Switzerland) back after he died in 77 by ransom-seekers. Imagine them trying to get Liz ! I am sure the family would want a more private secure place ...%0D %0D Glad now I saw her back in 1970 with Burton and director Joseph Losey when they were complaining in public about their Secret Ceremony film being dumped on tv and re-edited as it had been a big flop then (its a cult movie now, like Boom) - she looked terrific in a long gypsy dress and flashed that ring, she just revelled in being in the public eye whereas Burton ranted and looked uncomfortable. But then, that was her life, lived in public.

by Anonymousreply 177March 23, 2011 8:18 PM

I'm so sad. She was thee very last real MOVIE STAR! Like I have said in another thread, Hollywood died with her because she was thee last person reflecting true Hollywood and true movie star. Look at these losers we are left in Hollywood today.

She had extraordinary beauty. We will never see beauty like hers in Hollywood again. She was glamor so and she lived an extraordinary full life that truly was legend. Here was a woman who took her power of her fame, and applied that power to get people's attention in the fight against AIDS. She was one of the first people in the media to shake people up about this disease when so many ignored it. She put most of her jewels up for auction for the proceeds to be given to AIDS. She spoke so often about AIDS with compassion, and with genuine vigor in the fight against AIDS. There will never be anyone like her again because she was the whole package. She was definitely one of-a-kind.

Joan Rivers is a bitch. Sometimes she is funny, but I think when she made fun of Liz, she made fun of her in a way that was cold-blooded and ruthlessly hateful. Elizabeth Taylor once said that things usually didn't bother her, but when Joan Rivers made fun of her weight that really hurt her deeply because she was going through problems at that time in her life with her weight.

R126, I'm sorry but most people in their 20's toady don't even know who the vice president is. They can't tell you where Libya is located on a map nor they can't tell you what is going on there. However, they know all about the latest in technology and the Internet. The future doesn't look bright, but that is another story. t

Phil Bronstein (Sharon Stone's ex-hubby and editor of the SF Chronicle) shared a cute story about Elizabeth Taylor today:

Elizabeth Taylor's passion

"Passion was a quality she never lost," CBS' Harley Carnes said today about Elizabeth Taylor.

No kidding. I got a glimpse of that in action.

I'd seen Ms. Taylor a few times at events in San Francisco where she'd been blown up like a monster truck tire and moved around in a wheelchair or balancing precariously on a cane. You could only imagine then, as she struggled with various ailments, the striking allure of her beauty, her weirdly violet eyes, her porcelain skin, soft voice and incendiary temper.

At a showing of "Cleopatra" many years earlier, my preteen self watched as Liz slowly raised herself and her cleavage out of the bath on screen--just a little on the other side of the propriety of the era--and realized for the first time the voluptuous power she had.

Skip to 2002. My previous life. Elton John was having his annual Oscar-time birthday bacchanalia at a private room in the Beverly Hills Hotel. There were probably 35 to 40 people at a long table. Jon Bon Jovi (very pleasant, low-key) was on my right. Ingrid Sischy (hilarious), editor of Interview magazine and Andy Warhol protege, was on my left.

Ms. Taylor was seated directly across from me, obviously in some discomfort from her endless, ongoing health problems. But she was nothing short of regal in her demeanor and bearing. She looked better than when I'd seen her here, much better. Only her occasional trips to the bathroom required an entourage of assistance.

Her white fluffy Maltese, Precious, sat in her lap.

She was deep in conversation for much of the dinner with teenage actress Thora Birch, then the saucer-eyed sensation of movies like "American Beauty." Birch had a serious goth look at the dinner that she clearly felt showed both her young nonchalance and hipness. But she was very much into this inter-generational mind meld.

It was a snapshot that said oceans about Hollywood, about acting, about the passage of time and about the willingness of a film star dowager on one end of the life cycle to counsel patiently a fledgling.

I couldn't hear what they were saying but I imagined lots of wise counsel being passed down, professional and maybe even personal nightmares that Ms. Taylor had suffered through that she was trying to help her successor avoid.

It was clearly the best and most interesting coupling in the room, although Courtney Love showed up at some point with incipient presidential candidate John Kerry, introducing him around the table. A sure sign that Kerry was doomed.

Suddenly, I noticed that Ms. Taylor had stopped in mid-sentence and was looking around the room in a panic. Her dog had jumped off her lap at some point and she'd just noticed.

In a voice that sounded like a raging fan at a Raiders' game, she screamed. It was a deep rumble and stunning roar that Richard Burton must have heard a few times and seemed impossible from someone who often spoke in little girl whispers:

"PRECIOUS! PRECIOUS! Where the F**K are you!!??

Chaos ensued until the rat-like dog was found. It wasn't curves emerging from a bathtub but it was passionate and it clearly was Elizabeth Taylor.

RIP.

If there is an afterlife (and yes I know most likely there is not) do you think right now she's with Richard Burton or Mike Todd? Or...maybe with pets lost long ago. I think if there is such a thing as an afterlife and we can be reunited with loved ones I'd first want to be with my "babies" my beloved pets that are gone, then with father, mother and grandparents. Although I guess I would hope that all these years they've all been together and I could see them all at once.%0D %0D If such a thing were possible and you could be with those you lost, who would you want to be with first?

My local paper reprinted a cute story from 1957 about the world premiere of "Raintree County." A sample:

"Hundreds of other spectators watched quietly from windows in office buildings, an apartment house, and the Brown Hotel.

"Screaming, unescorted young girls with heavy lipstick and cigarettes that dangled -- often unlit -- from their mouth pushed forward against the ropes and vied for places in the heat of the lights.

"One or two appeared to faint, but there was no room for them to topple.

"The cry of 'My insides! Help!' went up whenever some of the 65 policemen on duty pushed the ropes back against the pressing crowd."

Featuring special appearances by Van Johnson, Eva Marie Saint, Russ Tamblyn, Jane Powell, and Jo Jo Zukowski (16).

On the evening of Oct. 6, 1991, two dozen helicopters carrying paparazzi and reporters whirred in the skies above singer Michael Jackson's ranch in Santa Barbara County. Despite an armada of hot-air balloons launched as a shield against prying eyes, a parachutist wearing a camera on his helmet managed to land mere yards from the 59-year-old bride and her 39-year-old groom.

Thus were Taylor and construction worker Larry Fortensky wed %E2%80%94 amid Hollywood hoopla and conjecture about whether the movie star's eighth walk down the aisle would be her last.

Who could know? The only sure thing was that Elizabeth Taylor adored men.

"I'm more of a man's woman," she once admitted. "With men, there's a kind of twinkle that comes out. I sashay up to a man. I walk up to a woman."

She dedicated herself to education, treatment and the search for a cure for HIV/AIDS long before it was fashionable to do so. Back in the dark days of ignorance and prejudice against people stricken with the disease, Elizabeth was at the forefront of the battle. Ever ready to give love, comfort, and dignity to those whose lives had been devastated and cut short, her generosity was nothing short of spectacular. It made her furious to hear anyone claim that people who had HIV/AIDS were somehow morally inferior or that the disease was some kind of punishment. I was fortunate enough to call her my friend and every moment I spent in her company was unforgettable. I loved her very much. Wouldn't a heart transplant be a cure for congestive heart failure? I wonder why with all her money and the very best doctors in the world Liz didn't get one. %E2%80%9CI liked her enormously without really knowing her very well,%E2%80%9D Elizabeth told reporters in the days following Marilyn%E2%80%99s passing. %E2%80%9CHer death brings me an endless sorrow. From what I know of her, Marilyn had very human qualities. You will understand that I am very upset by this announcement."

Elizabeth had to live in the shadow of Marilyn, whose memory never faded from view. She was infuriated by an article in which Max Lerner stated, "Elizabeth Taylor was a legend, but Marilyn Monroe was a myth."

Elizabeth retorted, "You have a nerve saying that Marilyn was a myth and I'm just a lousy legend. I'm much more beautiful than Marilyn Monroe ever was, and I'm certainly a better actress. What the hell do I have to do to be a myth? Die young and by my own hand?%E2%80%9D

One year in the early 1990s I had a part-time job driving a limousine. I was lucky enough to be Elizabeth Taylor's chauffeur to the Academy Awards that year. I picked her up and later dropped her off at her Bel Air home, which was much more humble in appearance than I expected. I don't remember who accompanied her in the car. Who cares? ...I've got Elizabeth Taylor! She was very sweet, asked my name, and did not give off any prima-donna or I'M A STAR and you're "the help" vibes at all. I still remember the electricity I felt charging through me, speaking with Elizabeth Taylor and taking her hand when she was entering and exiting the limousine. Sometime later I drove her home from LAX. Remember MGM Air? She was with Larry Fortensky then, and they both looked like someone left the windows open on the flight from JFK. They were both burned out of course after the long flight. Larry didn't speak, but Elizabeth was polite and sweet, and asked if I remembered where her house is. Who doesn't, Miss Taylor?! Still, what a buzz!

I remember an early interview of hers and she was talking about AIDS. She said she went to the AIDS patience in the hospitals and talk to them and hugged them. She said, these people that are dying, and they just want to be hugged and loved. Can%E2%80%99t you afford just to hug them and reassure them that you care about them and so some love?

R249, I%E2%80%99m surprised someone doesn%E2%80%99t go postal with those Westbro people! Everyone despises them. Even conservative, Christian people can%E2%80%99t stand them and they think they are evil.

by Anonymousreply 292March 24, 2011 2:59 PM

Was anyone else surprised she was only 79? Thinking about how she was a movie star since World War II... got married in 1950... was over-the-hill on screen by 1970... and seemed to have lost her marbles at least since 2001 and the "GLAAADIATOR!!" thing... my image of Liz Taylor in my mind was as somebody who was about 90 by now.

Has Larry Fortensky been heard from?

"Today my friend Elizabeth Taylor passed away. Oddly, we all knew this day was coming but still her passing took my breath away. She was a funny, loud, joke tellin, diamond loving, fantastic woman. She played a big role in shaping my life as Whoopi Goldberg. It really is the end of an era."%0D %0D Did Whoopi Goldberg really say that? "My friend Elizabeth Taylor?" Since when was Elizabeth Taylor Whoopie Goldberg's "friend?" "She played a big role in shaping my life as Whoopi Goldberg"...just what the fuck is THAT supposed to mean? That she modeled her life after Taylor's? That's pretty insane. Elizabeth Taylor was a gorgeous, glamorous sex goddess, an iconic film star; Whoopi Goldberg is a coyote ugly, nasty, stupid so-called "comedian" with a big, fat, flapping mouth. Elizabeth Taylor had NOTHING to do with Whoopi Goldberg. Whoopi, as usual, is indulging in self-promotion by associating herself with Elizabeth Taylor. God, Whoopi Goldberg is such an unbelieveable cunt.

Elizabeth Taylor's service held without disruption from anti-gay protesters

March 24, 2011 | 6:09 pm

Despite fears that anti-gay protesters from the controversial Westboro Baptist Church might disrupt the private ceremony for Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor, the service went off without a hitch Thursday afternoon at Forest Lawn Memorial-Park in Glendale.

Her family arrived in five black stretch limousines about 2:10 p.m. Thursday -%E2%80%93 and left within a couple of hours through the wrought-iron gates.

Despite the camera crews lined up outside and the helicopter that hovered overhead, it was a peaceful and quiet event. Even the fans who gathered seemed to mostly be connected to the elementary school letting out nearby.

The speed of the service surprised some -%E2%80%93 and without many details publicly available, huge crowds never arrived.

The actress, who died of congestive heart failure Wednesday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, converted to Judaism in the 1950s. Jewish tradition calls for a burial as soon as possible, preferably within 24 hours, after a person's death.

Glendale Police Department officials said the department was asked to assist in security for the three dozen to four dozen family members and friends expected to attend the service because of the proximity of an elementary school. No details were given to the media about who attended the service.

Scotland Beavers, 47, left work early after reading posts on Facebook that suggested anti-gay protesters might be picketing. "We need to get there and try to block them," he said.

They had umbrellas ready if protesters showed up, but they never materialized.

Taylor was laid to rest near her good friend Michael Jackson. The cemetery is also the final resting place of movie stars John Wayne, James Stewart and Sammy Davis Jr. Taylor and Jackson are in separate wings of the mausoleum, though she is near him, Glendale Police Department spokesman Tom Lorenz said.

"There's nowhere in the world where more famous people are laid to rest," Lorenz said.

How far away is she from Marilyn? If Marilyn is interred higher up, we will finally know who the Queen of Hollywood was.

by Anonymousreply 306March 25, 2011 2:44 AM

Is that the same place where Rudolph Valentino is interred?

by Anonymousreply 307March 25, 2011 2:51 AM

The bit about the other famous people at Forest Lawn is mostly wrong -- John Wayne is buried miles away in Orange County, and Sammy Davis Jr and Jimmie Stewart have outside graves far from the mausoleum. Marilyn is at Westwood where ET's parents also have wall crypts. Had ET chosen to be buried there, she and Marilyn would have been in crypts of equal distance above the ground.

by Anonymousreply 308March 25, 2011 2:56 AM

The family did a good job of keeping the funeral private and low-key. I'm impressed.

Liz, at Forest Lawn in Glendale, is about 18 freeway miles from M, in Westwood, if Liz is buried where her service was.

Rudolph is in the Hollywood Forever Cemetary, adjacent to Paramount Studios.

M wins, with the best zip code.

Liz is the last of a kind because she had a sense of humor about being a star. Look at Meryl - "oh no, not me. what? i'm just a vessel" all that false self modesty when everyone says you're the best. Liz was like "yeah, I'm Elizabeth Fucking Taylor" I am the best. So what? Now i'm going to do what I want. And if you don't like it then screw you. THAT'S the difference.

by Anonymousreply 315March 25, 2011 7:53 AM

Oh I don't know R315. Meryl Streep is an actress and therefore a vessel. Really great actors have that ability to channel other humans via the written word. It's an impressive ability but it doesn't necessarily say anything about them as a person otherwise. I don't think it's false self modesty on her part. It's an accurate description of the acting process when done right.

Elizabeth Taylor gave some really fine performances and had acting chops but she also embodied something really great in her daily life. She was a perfect Venus- the archetype of the sexy, warm, capricious, generous goddess. Even all her foibles and excesses were manifestations of this. I don't think it's something she put on. It's who she was. That's why we always think of her as the most beautiful woman in the world, even when she ceased to be a slim, young thing. She was able to manifest a real true beauty that came from inside and out because she lived at a time when that was appreciated and understood more. It's a form of radiance that all the dieting and plastic surgery in the world cannot produce. And I agree, her sense of humour and coarseness only added to it.

Well, said and nicely, said, R316.

Screen queen Elizabeth Taylor has left behind a fortune worth at least $600 million, much of which is expected to go to the AIDS charities she championed for decades. %0D %0D Her famous jewelry collection, valued at an eye-popping $150 million in 2002, is likely to be auctioned off with the bulk of the proceeds going to the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation and amfAR, the AIDS charity she helped found in 1985, according to WFLD/Fox TV Chicago. %0D %0D "From what I understand, she seems to have been very wise about her investments," said a financial planner who has worked with other Hollywood A-listers. %0D %0D PHOTOS: ELIZABETH TAYLOR %0D %0D At the time of her 1994 divorce from her last husband, Larry Fortensky, Taylor's net worth was estimated at $608.4 million. Yes that's her. Photographed "tastefully" by her pal Roddy McDowell back in the 50s. This was supposed to be an engagement gift to Mike Todd, after he died she gave it to a close friend; it later ended up in a private collection and the owner waited until after her death to show it publically for the 1st time. there was an article in the Daily Mail this past week.

"First time seen," my ass. That picture at R337 has been accessible on Google Images for quite a while now. Again, the Liz "myth" via Roddy McDowall continues.

When did she develop those giant honkers she had in the years she was with Burton? She got a little blowsy in the 60's, but weight gain couldn't account for all of it. In later years when she'd lose weight, she still had the huge boobs. I always wondered if sometime in the early 60's she had "silicone injections" as they were called back then. There is just such a difference in the size of her boobs from Cleopatra on.

by Anonymousreply 341April 2, 2011 6:24 PM

Also, she had had three children by then, r341

by Anonymousreply 342April 2, 2011 6:33 PM

She'd had two of her three children by the time that picture was allegedly taken IF it was taken in 1956. I think it was taken before then. Even though it's heavily retouched, her body and face look younger than 24 and certainly not like she'd had kids yet. I always suspected -- because the picture has been around for a while -- that it was taken when she was in her teens. On the other hand, she DID have a tiny waist (and medium boobs) in some of the early Mike Todd pictures, and she'd had two kids then. In any case, the big big boobs seemed to come along with the Burton years, and they never really retreated.

by Anonymousreply 343April 2, 2011 8:27 PM

Women's boobs get bigger with age. She was also heavier during the Burton years, which also accounts for bigger boobs.

The more I read about Liz the less I like her. She was just an average actress who was more famous for all the scandals and less for her acting. Sure, she was fun to watch on the big screen but why do people pretend that she was something other than a drunken nympomaniac who loved her jewels (perhaps it was her faux-British accent that gave people that false sense of classiness). She was a lot like Whorelina is today...only fatter.

R350, Elizabeth Taylor dedicated the last 25 years of her life for AIDS causes. She even bequeathed over $300 million of her estate to various AIDS related charities. She demanded compassion and sympathy for those suffering from AIDS in the 1980s, a decade of ignorance, intolerance, prejudice, and fear. She, along with many others, made it possible for you to take a cock up your ass (which you obviously and so desperately need) without fear of a death sentence.
