BREAKING - Jane Russell dies at age 89

Actress Jane Russell, star of Howard Hughes' 'The Outlaw,' dies at 89

Actress Jane Russell, who became a star with the 1943 release of "The Outlaw," Howard Hughes' challenge to the Hollywood production code, has died. She was 89.

Russell went on to play Calamity Jane opposite Bob Hope in "The Paleface" (1948), and she starred with Marilyn Monroe in the 1953 musical "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes."

As former Times staff writer Claudia Luther explains in her obituary of the actress, "Russell's provocative performance in 'The Outlaw' %E2%80%94 and the studio publicity shots posing her in a low-cut blouse reclined on a stack of hay bales %E2%80%94 marked a turning point in moviedom sexuality. She became a bona fide star and a favorite pinup girl of soldiers during World War II. Troops in Korea named two embattled hills in her honor. ...

"Meanwhile, Hughes brilliantly publicized the film, issuing Russell-in-the-haystack posters with such lines as 'How Would You Like to Tussle With Russell?' and 'Mean! Moody! Magnificent!' In one publicity stunt, askywriter wrote 'The Outlaw' in the sky and then carefully drew two circles with a dot in the center of each."

Some readers will remember Russell as a pitchwoman for Playtex bras, for "full-figured women."

Services are set for 11 a.m. March 12 at Pacific Christian Church, 3435 Santa Maria Way, Santa Maria.

Instead of flowers, her family suggests donations in her name to Care Net Pregnancy & Resource Center, 121 W. Battles, Santa Maria, CA 93458; or CASA of Santa Barbara County, 120 E. Jones Street, Ste. 130, Santa Maria, CA 93454.

The full obituary of Jane Russell will follow at www.latimes.com/obits.

Until then, tell us your favorite Jane Russell movie memory.

We are all bosoms, today.

by Anonymousreply 1February 28, 2011 10:57 PM

She was only a few months away from age 90. I thought she was going to make it!

by Anonymousreply 2February 28, 2011 10:59 PM

NO!!!!!!!!%0D %0D

by Anonymousreply 3February 28, 2011 11:04 PM

What is the Care Net Pregnancy & Resource Center?

by Anonymousreply 4February 28, 2011 11:06 PM

Last night's Oscars killed off her will to live.

by Anonymousreply 5February 28, 2011 11:06 PM

Didn't really see this one coming.

She was old, sure, but she was still out and about at events last year. She would have been 90 in June.

by Anonymousreply 6February 28, 2011 11:07 PM

She was tall, busty and gorgeous in her prime. But she was a right winger and she said EVERYONE in Hollywood was back then. I don't think that's true.

by Anonymousreply 7February 28, 2011 11:08 PM

Another right wing looney bites the dust.

by Anonymousreply 8February 28, 2011 11:09 PM

James Franco killed her when he walked out on stage dressed as Marilyn.

by Anonymousreply 9February 28, 2011 11:09 PM

I wonder if they'll conveniently forget to include Jane Russell in next year's "In Memorium" Oscar segment?

by Anonymousreply 10February 28, 2011 11:12 PM

She was a giant. They don't make legends like her anymore.

Her musical numbers with Marilyn Monroe in "Gentleman Prefer Blondes" are amazing.

by Anonymousreply 11February 28, 2011 11:12 PM

So sad. Loved her in GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES, , THE FRENCH LINE, MACAO, and that Bob Hope movie (Paleface?). %0D %0D RIP.

by Anonymousreply 12February 28, 2011 11:15 PM

She left Montecito to move up to dusty, drab, poor Santa Maria, supposedly to be near her son. She probably also took a hit in the financial downturn. It's full of white evangelicals who love fetuses more than the brown people who work the local farms. Her causes were certainly not feminist and pro-choice.

by Anonymousreply 13February 28, 2011 11:15 PM

LOL R9.

by Anonymousreply 14February 28, 2011 11:16 PM

The New York Times is dragging its butt with this tedious focus on Libya. LA Times already has a big Hurrell photo of Jane at the top of its web page.

by Anonymousreply 15February 28, 2011 11:18 PM

Here she is in 2005:

She is the last of the great ones. This truly marks the end of an era.

by Anonymousreply 17February 28, 2011 11:19 PM

She attended the Oscars last year.

by Anonymousreply 18February 28, 2011 11:20 PM

R13=MARY!

by Anonymousreply 19February 28, 2011 11:20 PM

R13, Jane Russell had an abortion when she was younger which went very badly. That's what led to her being pro-life. If that's the position she felt was best to take, she had the right to it.

by Anonymousreply 20February 28, 2011 11:20 PM

I remember when a film journalist interviewed her on TV and he mentioned her status as something of a gay icon thanks to Gentlmen Prefer Blondes. Her smile froze and she didn't say anything, only murmured.

by Anonymousreply 21February 28, 2011 11:22 PM

R20, what happened?

by Anonymousreply 22February 28, 2011 11:23 PM

She hated queers and was a supporter of the crazy TV evangelists. I don't see why we should give a shit about this evil old broad. She sure as hell had no use for gays.

by Anonymousreply 23February 28, 2011 11:23 PM

She probably saw some eye opening things in Hollywood that upset her and drove her into the other direction.

by Anonymousreply 24February 28, 2011 11:26 PM

Here you go, R22:

"I was 19 and unmarried when I got pregnant and that would have caused a scandal.(...)Back then nobody had a child out of wedlock. I had to go to school and find a friend who once had something done, and I asked her what to do. It's awful when you're in trouble and don't know where to turn.

"Abortion was illegal, so I had no choice but to go to an illegal backstreet abortionist. But it was botched and I darn near died. I was in bed for weeks and they had to take me to the hospital anyway. It left me unable to have children of my own. It was devastating."

Huh, wouldn't that make you want to be pro-choice, so that if you want to have an abortion you or any other woman can have it done safely in a hospital?

by Anonymousreply 33February 28, 2011 11:42 PM

She was no Heath Ledger.

by Anonymousreply 34February 28, 2011 11:44 PM

R33, she was probably also upset about the baby.

by Anonymousreply 35February 28, 2011 11:46 PM

by Anonymousreply 37March 1, 2011 12:10 AM

Last of the great ones? End of an era? For Jane Russell who made one decent film?%0D %0D Calm down, dears, you're hyperventilating.

by Anonymousreply 38March 1, 2011 12:23 AM

This is sad and very sudden. She was doing interviews very recently and looked fine. Her early start with GHoward Hughes was very interesting. Hughes basically kept her from doing other movies for several years in the mid 40's.%0D %0D And, R38, she did quite a few good movies and was a major force in 40's and 50's.

by Anonymousreply 39March 1, 2011 12:31 AM

She made three movies in the 40's and fifteen movies in the 50's. Only Gentleman Prefer Blondes is in anyway remarkable. This is not a "major force" in the movies. Sorry she's dead but legendary hardly cuts it.

by Anonymousreply 40March 1, 2011 12:36 AM

r40%0D %0D She WAS box office. And she was an icon of 1950s glamour.

by Anonymousreply 41March 1, 2011 12:40 AM

Jane's image on the "Outlaw" poster remains one of the iconic images of Hollywood history. She wasn't much of an actress, but she was a legend.

by Anonymousreply 42March 1, 2011 12:44 AM

Hey R40,

FUCK YOU. Jane was fantastic.

by Anonymousreply 43March 1, 2011 12:45 AM

Thanks R11 -- I needed the laugh!

by Anonymousreply 44March 1, 2011 12:47 AM

Aw, there goes yet another part of David Gest's income stream.

by Anonymousreply 45March 1, 2011 12:50 AM

The funeral will last 18 hours.

by Anonymousreply 46March 1, 2011 12:50 AM

Poor R43, clinging to the legendary status of Jane Russell. An all caps "FUCK YOU" doesn't prove your point. %0D %0D Elizabeth Taylor is legendary. Marilyn Monroe is legendary. %0D %0D Just because someone died at an old age doesn't mean they are legendary. Just old. %0D %0D I loved Betty Garrett who was in better movies than Jane - and was a bigger star. But she, too, wasn't legendary, which is reserved for the great ones, the ones that you have to include in any history of Hollywood. You put a pic of Jane and Marilyn, plus the poster for the Outlaw and you've covered Jane.%0D %0D Now her Playtex Bra commercials! Legendary!

by Anonymousreply 47March 1, 2011 12:51 AM

r48%0D %0D Betty Garrett was a bigger star than Jane Rusell?!

by Anonymousreply 48March 1, 2011 12:54 AM

by Anonymousreply 49March 1, 2011 12:54 AM

FUCK! Now I can't say fuck Jane Russell. My shit will start disappearing, my car will start breaking down. The only thing that is worth mentioning is that she didn't bitch about working with Marilyn. Other than that--oh dear gawd my heart is racing about Olivia and Joan.

by Anonymousreply 50March 1, 2011 1:00 AM

Anyone know the boys in this photo? The guy on the right looks familiar.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 51March 1, 2011 1:01 AM

I saw her at the Hollywood Autograph Show last year, charging $25 a pop, alongside the likes of Ernest Borgnine and Joe Penney. There was quite a long line at Jane's table.

Those actors probably make 2 or 3 thousand in cash (undeclared, I'm sure) for those shows. I'm guessing Jane needed the money, though.

I'll never forget her very uncomfortable interview on the old Joan Rivers talk show in the '80's. Joan kept cracking jokes about Jane being some sort of sex bomb and Jane was obviously offended. Then Joan begged her to sing and Jane stayed put in her chair and gave some halfhearted performance through gritted teeth, obviously seething.

She never seemed to have much of a sense of humor. I can't imagine anyone considering her a gay icon.

by Anonymousreply 52March 1, 2011 1:06 AM

In 1971 she succeeded Elaine Stritch in the role of Joanne in "Company." Russell performed the role for almost six months.

by Anonymousreply 53March 1, 2011 1:07 AM

Are the lez rumors going to get stronger?

by Anonymousreply 54March 1, 2011 1:09 AM

And what's your point R53?

by Anonymousreply 55March 1, 2011 1:12 AM

"Ms. Russell had had previous problems with alcohol, but they became worse after she was widowed again; her grown children insisted that she undergo rehabilitation at the age of 79.

She also turned to conservative politics in her later years.

%E2%80%9CThese days I%E2%80%99m a teetotal, mean-spirited, right-wing, narrow-minded, conservative Christian bigot, but not a racist,%E2%80%9D she told an Australian newspaper, The Daily Mail, in 2003. Bigotry, she added, %E2%80%9Cjust means you don%E2%80%99t have an open mind.%E2%80%9D

by Anonymousreply 57March 1, 2011 1:24 AM

She did a lot of radio in the 40s and 50s and in the 50s, had a night club act that played Las Vegas, NYC, Europe and South America.

by Anonymousreply 59March 1, 2011 2:07 AM

by Anonymousreply 64March 1, 2011 2:33 AM

Howard Hughes did design a bra for her for The Outlaw. It wasn't nearly as big of a deal as history made it out to be, though. They just needed one that would not show in the photos and Hughes made some suggestions for a strapless thingie. And all those legendary photos from The Outlaw were much sexier than the actual movie.%0D %0D Jane was a good gal and a great gay supporter. The posters here are dimwitted morons (as usual) and don't know what they are talking about.

r64, remember Lena Horne actually did accomplish things for people. Fuck Jane Russell.

by Anonymousreply 67March 1, 2011 2:39 AM

Howard Hughes did design a bra for her for "The Outlaw," but she said she didn't like it so she wore her own bra and just pushed the shoulder straps down so they didn't show. The idea that he designed a special bra got them a lot of publicity for the film.

by Anonymousreply 68March 1, 2011 2:42 AM

Did Jane do her own singing in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes?

by Anonymousreply 69March 1, 2011 2:42 AM

Her gay icon staus is completely based on her characterization in GPB. How could any gay guy not love the woman she playes in that film? And readily believe that Jane was Dorothy?

by Anonymousreply 74March 1, 2011 3:24 AM

Jane reached the breaking point over the exploitation of her generous bosom when she appeared in THE FRENCH LINE, a 3-D movie whose poster art promised "Jane Russell in 3-D: It'll Knock BOTH Your Eyes Out!"

I think that's Ed Fury, R51. He is definitely one of the athletes in this scene. Jane Russell's brother is also one of the guys. I think he's the one she winks at while ducking under the barbell as he raises and lowers it.

by Anonymousreply 78March 1, 2011 4:07 AM

It's wonderful the way the scene in GPB with the boys by the pool begins with Jane exclaiming in disbelief, "The whole TEAM???" in a way that implies they have just told her they have to stay celibate while in training.

by Anonymousreply 79March 1, 2011 4:21 AM

Didn't the Legion of Decency ban "The French Line"? Russell wore a little cut-out outfit that barely covered her tits, and I heard you could practically see her pussy lips.

by Anonymousreply 91March 1, 2011 5:36 AM

You never know it by Jane's iconic sultry pose in the hay on the posters, but THE OUTLAW is an almost laughably homo-erotic film. The relationship between Doc Holiday and Billy the Kid is the movie's real love story. Jane is thrown into it the middle of things just to put people off the scent.

Since there appear to be a lot of newbies here who haven't seen GPB a thousand times I'd like to point out a little trivia. %0D %0D As you can see from the surprised look on her face, Jane only accidentally got pushed into the pool at the end of Ain't There Anyone Here for Love? by Anonymousreply 97March 1, 2011 12:27 PM

Jane was against abortion and pro-adoption, I never read that she was against abortion RIGHTS. That is, access to safe & legal abortions. %0D %0D I'd think there would be far more lesbian speculation on this thread since Jane was butcher than John Wayne and swaggered more than Robert Mitchum. There have been rumors and blind items about Jane on the road way back, starlets and show girls...hmmmm.%0D %0D R71, could Jane have chaired LCCO-Southern California?

by Anonymousreply 98March 1, 2011 1:48 PM

Jane's big charity was WAIF standing for World Adoption International Federation.%0D %0D I can always remember seeing photos in movie magazines of their parties and benefit shows as a kid. Debbie Reynolds was also a big proponent of that organization.

by Anonymousreply 99March 1, 2011 1:56 PM

Yes R99. I remember an old People Magazine article, from the late 70's, about Jane getting arrested from DWI. Her car (a small Mercedes) license plate was WAIF.

Actually, when she was knocked in by accident she was crouched over and hiding her face. The film cuts to a separate shot with her looking astonished as she emerges from the pool. That was acting. They filmed it separately after they decided to keep the accident in the number.

by Anonymousreply 104March 1, 2011 5:50 PM

by Anonymousreply 107March 1, 2011 6:51 PM

I don't believe for a minute it was an accident. In movies, if you're at the edge of a swimming pool, you're going to fall in.

by Anonymousreply 108March 1, 2011 6:56 PM

Thanks for the info, R102. So the guy with the barbell was gay? What about the other guys in the sequence?

by Anonymousreply 109March 1, 2011 7:10 PM

If it wasn't for the last minute after-thought of adding a black stripe to the bottoms of those swimming trunks, the boys in Ain't There Anyone... would look completely nude!

by Anonymousreply 110March 1, 2011 7:32 PM

The only correction I would make to you R60 is that MOST of the people at DL, not some, do not know what they are talking about!

by Anonymousreply 111March 1, 2011 7:40 PM

True, R110. Those tan bathing suits almost make them look nude from certain angles.

And it's amazing how many shots of male bums there are in that scene.

I like GPB - especially when they are trying to get the film roll away from Elliott and Jane says matter of factly: "If between the two of us we can't get his pants off, we're not worthy of the name 'woman.'"

Not everyone who attends that big name Oscar party does so because they're pro gay, but rather because they want to be where the cameras are. Also, there have been quotes from her that sound anti-gay. That's why I asked if there was any OTHER information to "prove" she was pro gay like R60 claims.

I too thought she was cool. This "what has she/he done for the gays?" response to anyone famous is getting tedious. It's an absurd attitude and not unlike the black community celebrating O.J. Simpson's acquittal because they hated L.A. cops (as do I!) and he was black. It's asinine to attack someone for what they don't do. Plenty of DL favorites have said or done nothing to advance gay rights. And I would bet most people here have never been in a gay rights parade/rally/protest. And those of you in California should never criticize anyone for not being politically involved in gay rights.

It saddens me that legends like Jane Russell die. It%E2%80%99s ironic that Jane Russell died on the evening of the Oscars? Or the day after the Oscars and ding-dong Anne Hathaway made a statement that this is now the young Oscars. Please! I would take the the Golden era of Hollywood over these major losers any day. The younger generations are running Hollywood into the ground with pure dullness and personalities that are exciting as a blank wall.Jane Russell is one of the last major legends in Hollywood that played a role in making Hollywood exciting. The one poster on this thread who stated DL doesn't know what they are talking about, I agree.

Jane Russell's image of the Outlaw was a huge jaw dropper when it came out in the movie theaters. For the 1940%E2%80%99s, this film brought up the level of sexual intensity, lust, and sexual innuendo to a very, very high point. It was one of the films like no other that came before it.

My mother grew up in a small town most everyone in the town knew each other. When she was a little girl, she went to the local movie theater to see the Outlaw. She went up to the ticked lady who was a well known devote Catholic, and when the lady at the ticket booth sold a ticket to my mother, she shook her finger at my mother like saying shame on you young lady. My mother felt a little bad, but proceeded on and ignored the lady, LOL. In those days when movies came out to all of the towns, it took a couple of years or more to make its debut. But, again, my mother side that movie was a hoper of a jaw dropper to the average moviegoer back then. She thought Gregory Peck was extremely handsome and he always had sex appeal.

Jane Russell once said that bra that Howard Hughes designed for her, for The Outlaw, was very painful and it was horribly made.

Jane Russell%E2%80%99s mother was a minister. Jane Russell's beliefs I think were a bit goofy because it seems like she was sort of wishy washy and not really solid. However, I remember she was interviewed on Jim and Tammy Faye Baker's program. They said something and I forgot, and she said, the bible speaks of though shall not judge only God is the judge. Also, she did not believe in religion and had she once said that she disliked religion, and did not like religion. She said, she only followed the bible. I have heard that Jane Russell%E2%80%99s personality was street smart who didn%E2%80%99t take any BS. Also, she was a really strong woman in the positive sense not in a bitchy way. Anne Hathaway

Yeah, the good ole days when you had horse drawn carrages and no running water and no telephone. That's why shit movies and movie "stars" back then were popular... people didn't have anything else. It was either the movies or another game of bridge.

by Anonymousreply 140March 2, 2011 9:46 AM

This should have been;

But, again, my mother said that movie was a whopper of a jaw dropper to the average moviegoer back then...

R140, you are a major exaggerator. People back then interacted with each other much more verses sitting in front of a computer screen or TV screen. They walked more and got involved in activities with the community. That was before TV came out, and they listened to various programs on the radio, which challenged their imaginations. There was a lot of book reading back then. Again, people had a lot of imaginations, and were creative with their free time verses living in an age in which microchips do all of the thinking for people. When my mother went to school back then it was amazing the extent that she was taught in grammar school through high school alone. This was in a public school system. In fact, she and those that were educated in basic education from her era know a lot more than the average college student of today. Another thing, they did not have negative memories but happy ones and many of them loved life back then. Life was simple yet rewarding.

On the one hand I appreciate your spirited defense of Old Hollywood, R138. But when you talk about how much better the movies were then, you shouldn't cite THE OUTLAW as an example. It was a dull, silly film with a notorious poster, nothing more.

by Anonymousreply 146March 2, 2011 6:48 PM

Legend, great one- huh?%0D %0D She was a starlet- big boobs, one moderately scandalous part that had nothing to do with talent and the good luck to be in a campy movie with Marilyn Monroe. Other than that, minimal talent and big boobs and a string of B westerns. %0D %0D And I gather she was also a bit of a religion fruitcake too- did lots of dinner theatre and memory shows in Vegas and Palm Springs. %0D %0D %0D %0D

by Anonymousreply 147March 2, 2011 6:58 PM

Jane used to be on the re-union and tribute shows on Larry King when they would talk about Marilyn Monroe or other deceased celebrities.

by Anonymousreply 148March 2, 2011 10:30 PM

While Jane might not be termed "legendary" can't we all agree that her image and persona were an iconic part of Hollywood history? Her poster pin-up from The Outlaw and a few of her numbers from GPB are a major part of Hollywood history. Sometimes, that's all it takes for an icon.

by Anonymousreply 149March 2, 2011 11:48 PM

I agree R149. She's in cement at Grauman's and she has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

by Anonymousreply 150March 3, 2011 12:01 AM

She managed to hold her own in scenes with Mitchum, Bob Hope, etc. Most actors disappeared when they played opposite Marilyn Monroe, but Rusell didn't. It would be crazy to say that she was a major talent, but it's just as crazy to pretend that she didn't have something.

by Anonymousreply 151March 3, 2011 2:43 AM

She dominated the screen in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes".

by Anonymousreply 152March 3, 2011 6:33 AM

Its amazing that there is judgment placed on Jane Russell in which various people are conveying that she really didn't do anything when we live in a day in age in which some scatter brain bimbo slut like Pairs Hilton truly didn't do 0, but who is famous because she was born rich and she was photographed pantie-less.

R149, you hit the nail on the head. I love classic films immensely, and I grew up watching them on TV. I was dazzled by them because they were true magic and they were films that aloud one to escape and let the viewer's imagination run wild. The sets were beautiful, the costumes were gorgeous, the clothes were glamorous and the productions as a whole were sumptuous and a feast for the eye. I have noticed many on this thread can't grasp the jest what Jane Russell did which was make Hollywood history. I think those of us on this thread who understand Jane Russell's place in Hollywood film, are perfectly aware that the woman wasn't a method actress and she wasn't an actors actor. She was a movie star and an entertainer.

Her role in the Outlaw took sexuality in film up a level by pushing the boundaries a little further than most films that debut before. Also aside from this, she had a likable presence in later films. She always came off as a street smart no BS broad who couldn%E2%80%99t be bamboozled.

She had a role playing character "Rose Hollister" in 3 episodes of the show "The Yellow Rose" in 1984.

Her mysterious character appears suddenly and the audience discovers she is the long missing sister of the show's wealthy villain, Chuck Connors.

We learned that when she was young, she gave birth to a son fathered by the now dead Wade Champion, who had started out poor and eventually built the ranch which he called "The Yellow Rose". That now grown son, whose name is Chance McKenzie, played by Sam Elliott, shows up at the ranch in the first episode and does not know the circumstances of his birth but hated his father who he believed abandoned him.

Rose (Jane Russell) returns when she hears Chance has come to the ranch and at their first meeting in a bar, she does not tell him who she is. Eventually she seeks him out to tell him that his father had kidnapped him from her when he was a baby (she hated him for doing it) and hid him from her to protect the baby from his evil uncle Jeb Hollister, her brother, Chuck Connors..

Just as Chance realizes the truth in what she says, the pair come under gunfire out on the range from an assassin hired by Chuck Connors because he knows that if Rose has returned it is to have her revenge on her brother for his threat and to protect her son.

The pair take cover in a cave as bullets ricochet around them.

At this point, to Chance's surprise, Jane pulls a gun out of her boot and pushes him out of the way, ready to take on the gunman to protect her son.

At Chance's surprise, Jane looks at him and she says, deadly serious

[quote] "Every Rose has a thorn."

Loved that scene now and still do. Great casting.

There is a clip of the first meeting in the bar shown in this interview Russell did in 1984 with Bryant Gumbel.
