What's he like? Any stories? I know he's a big star in the UK, but in the US he's not all that well-known.
John Barrowman

There have been many threads on him here. You might find some still active if you do a search.
edited highlights:
He's become famous in recent years because of Doctor Who and Torchwood.
He's openly gay and married to his partner.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | February 12, 2011 11:44 PM |
I'm sure that we'll get to hear a lot more about him in the upcoming months when the partly U.S. made Torchwood premieres.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | February 21, 2011 2:01 AM |
He's an obnoxious braggart who never shuts up about his big dick. The Brits have just about had their fill of him.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | February 21, 2011 2:49 AM |
And when is he going to show that big dick he is always bragging about?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | February 21, 2011 4:20 AM |
Didn't he say in an interview that his husband is actually bigger than he is? How a subject like that would come up in an interview (pun intended) is beyond me.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | February 21, 2011 12:22 PM |
Oh get over yourself R3. If you had a big cock and were as pretty as Barrowman you'd be a big obnoxious braggart too. You know it's the truth. Admit it NOW!
by Anonymous | reply 6 | February 21, 2011 12:28 PM |
If he does have a big 'un, he must be a grower not a shower because there certainly is no indication of el pinga grande in those jeans.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | February 21, 2011 12:33 PM |
Back when he was a musical theatre actor, you couldn't be in the rehearsal room with him for more than ten minutes without him whipping it out. I've had boyfriends whose dicks I've seen less. Yeah, it's big. But he's an asshole, so it's sort of depressing. Oh, and he's a total whore, too. His marriage to his partner (which was forever being heralded in the UK as some sort of magical, empowering gay love story) is a total farce. They two of them have been passed around more parties than a bowl of potato chips.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | February 21, 2011 1:20 PM |
John Barrowman is NOT married. There is no gay marriage in the UK. He has a civil partnership.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | February 21, 2011 1:26 PM |
As a Brit I can say he's actually well-liked by the public and media here generally (sure, he can be a bit loud but you just need to turn your TV down!). I met him (and his partner) once at a show and both came across as really nice guys who were totally mad about each other. But that's probably not what some of you want to hear is it!
by Anonymous | reply 10 | February 21, 2011 2:20 PM |

"you couldn't be in the rehearsal room with him for more than ten minutes without him whipping it out. . . .Yeah, it's big."
How big would you estimate it to be, R8?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | February 22, 2011 3:22 AM |
Big. I'm not great at estimating these things, but it looked about six inches (or so) soft and pretty thick. But like I said, his attitude about it negated its hotness.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | February 22, 2011 11:37 AM |
He's not a big star here in the UK. He's medium-sized.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 22, 2011 1:12 PM |
R10 I don't have one friend in the UK who likes Barrowman. They all think he's an intolerable loudmouth. He's been foisted on the public by the BBC execs he's fucked with.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | February 22, 2011 4:51 PM |
R16, well if your friends think that then *everyone* must, right!

I saw him in the Canadian verion of "How do you solve a problem like Maria?" and thought he was a bit much at points but was pretty charming at other times. In other words, a little of him went a long way. I looked up other shows he has done and DAMN is he in a lot of stuff on the BBC! I wouldn't be surprised if there are people tired of him in the UK, he sounds a little over exposed.

did you mean to insert the word "he" somewhere, R21?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | February 26, 2011 6:39 AM |
Seems like he's really good with children. I found a clip of him on one of his BBC shows holding a little girl who kissed him. I know, I know it's pablum for the masses and I fall for the guy with the kid. It helped erase a bit of my annoyance at his arrogance when he was kissing all the Maria's on "How do you solve a problem like Maria?"

He's a charter member of the Fucking Lucky Club. Wooden actor, just OK singer, obnoxious personality.
There's a big reason Hugh Jackman became a big star and Barrowman never will.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | March 28, 2011 1:17 AM |
Does he really need to be a bigger star? He is busy enough as it is with his work. He does the projects that he wants. He has several homes and cars. While he isn't a household name in the US he's got his fans there as well, but he lives in the UK, so does he care that much about it? Seems like he'd just be asking for more headaches if he's chasing more fame.

Are you kidding, R27? Barrowman is the male Minnie Driver-frighteningly ambitious but, like her, a mediocrity who will only get to a certain point without ever attaining true stardom.
And uhh, Barrowman is no dummy. His partner isn't exactly a pauper.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | March 28, 2011 2:01 AM |
I've been a Barrowman fan since he played lawyer Peter Fairchild in short-lived glossy US drama series Central Park West (1995-96).
by Anonymous | reply 30 | March 28, 2011 2:24 AM |
I realized as I was posting that "who actually needs to be famous?" is a question that almost every famous person could be asked. I was just thinking that usually actors want to be known so that people think of them for their next project. JB doesn't seem to have an issue with that part, I hear he is always working.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | March 28, 2011 2:58 AM |
You make a fair point, R27, but working all the time and being financially secure isn't enough for a raging narcissist like Barrowman. He wants what true fame brings-mass adoration and respect.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | March 28, 2011 4:20 AM |
Respect by his peers, I meant to say. But a lot of his peers both in the US and the UK have zero respect for him and his mediocre talents.

by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 28, 2011 4:32 AM |
Well, I guess his Torchwood/DrWho peers are better actors then I thought because they all really emphasize that they love him. Except Eccleston, who hasn't said anything about Barrowman as far as I know, but Barrowman has said some unflattering stuff about him.

Here's an old Blind item probably about John. He was in DC doing Company at the Sondheim Celebration. %0D Could it be that one of our favorite former New Yorkers (well, that was his address on that short-lived series) is playing a bit more openly with members of the same sex? Putting this item together should be a piece of cake, particularly once I tell you that he's been frequenting the Crew Club in the oh-so-lovely District of Columbia (which makes sense, given his current job). This hunky lad had no trouble letting his hair down and showing passersby that he was alive and kicking. How? Let's just say that he was looking for some company in his room and knew that it pays to advertise (and, for a change, he wasn't the one paying). He left his door ajar, lay face down, and exposed his delectable buns for all to see. My eyewitnesses tell me that our boy was banged like a human pi%C3%B1ata for several hours, although many of the more attractive gents took a rain check. Seems that sloppy seconds were one thing, but once the queue hit double digits, it made sense to wait for the next performance. John Barrowman %0D

by Anonymous | reply 59 | May 22, 2011 12:39 AM |
Very handsome, an excellent dancer, and with incredible charisma, but a limited actor and singer. He's a genuinely nice and funny guy, and very out and committed to the gay community, but like most male musical comedy stars he's got an insatiable need for attention and praise, and he's hard to be friends with because of his narcissism.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | May 22, 2011 12:45 AM |
R59, he DID use Stefanie Powers as a beard at several show biz functions during and after their West End run in MATADOR. Did the same with Angie Dickinson for a bit. He was quoted as saying "I love older women.'
by Anonymous | reply 61 | May 22, 2011 12:54 AM |
I wonder if he weren't so good looking he would have grown more as an actor by getting more bit roles. Instead because of his looks and charisma he got lead roles very early on and hasn't had to excercise his acting muscles outside of that.

He was SO ANNOYING on television here in the UK last night that I felt like ringing the studio to complain. He was a guest judge on a weekly dancing talent show, but he obviously endeavoured to make it all about him by constantly butting in to the other judge's comments, and being confrontational. Its always "me me me " with him - he just has to be the centre of attention. %0D %0D I think he knows he has peaked really and his career is just going to be presenting Saturday evening family entertainment shows. Bzzzzzt wrong answer. The pic is actually a hamburger roll and it's not him. He has seen the photo and said if it was him he would say so, but alas, it's not.

I think he's too unpredictable and that scares the American hosts (or their producers I should say). UK talk shows are raunchier and more gay so I think they're worried he would push the envelope here.

by Anonymous | reply 129 | August 8, 2011 8:03 PM |
His teenage nephew got a Twitter account last year and Barrowman was encouraging fans to follow him and was promoting him like crazy. He's just a random kid, not an aspiring actor or singer or anything. I actually like the guy (have worked with him) but his whole family seem like famewhores.
by Anonymous | reply 130 | August 8, 2011 8:41 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 136 | September 11, 2011 4:31 PM |
She's VERY over-rated - and probably started this thread himself. We (the majority of gays) can't stand him here in the UK - I don't watch Torchwood (apart from the gay episode) and he got so tiresome on Saturday Evening Television on those family shows - he was maddeningly annoying on those Lord Lloyd Webber talent shows when searching for a new Nancy or Maria or Joseph, as he was making it all about him with his loud comments ....
Talk about spreading himself thin: the tour, the book, on television at every chance, the west end show (at least I saw Cage Aux Folles with Douglas Hodge)
the tour seemed to be out of the way places - did it sell out ? He could still be Nancy though !
by Anonymous | reply 139 | November 17, 2011 5:45 PM |
There's an entire group of women who go to every event and performance he does. He encourages them like mad, it's scary. Though there's one woman, and I don't know if she's the stalker in the article, who believes she and John are 'twin souls' and psychically linked and all this other stuff. Really disturbing.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | November 17, 2011 5:46 PM |
I have to admit he looks good for his age though - must be hard work. I forgot to mention his albums - do they sell ? are they all just show-tunes ? Has he got any depth at all ?

I heard a rumour going around once some years ago that he and some other musical theatre star - Michael Ball perhaps - were sharing a dressing room at some one night benefit, and the others discovered the door was locked and lots of noises overheard .... but I imagine them both as two bossy bottoms.

John Barrowman appearing on Chris Moyles quiz show in the UK. He was camping it up in fine fashion.
by Anonymous | reply 150 | December 21, 2011 1:09 AM |
He's out and supports gay causes without any of that shit about "I don't want to be the gay poster child". That's enough for me to support him.
I thought he was funny on the silly game shows to pick ALW's next Joseph or Maria or Nancy. He and Graham Elliott were the only parts that made me laugh. ALW was much more self-adoring/fake humble, and everyone pretty much had to bow and scrape to him.
Of course he's a narcissist. Show me a single entertainer who's not. They live for applause and adulation. But I still like some of them, and he's one. NPH is another I adore and will support anytime I can. (And NPH is not a bad B'way actor; he's fantastic in "Assassins".)
by Anonymous | reply 151 | December 21, 2011 1:21 AM |
What I don't understand is, John Barrowman was born in Scotland and lived there 'til he was 8. Then his family moved to the US, where he finished growing up. Then he went back to the UK as a young adult and has resided there for like 20 years YET he retains his American accent. (Granted, he says he lapses into a Scottish brogue when he's around family.)
But then you've got someone like Gillian Anderson who was born in the US, then moved to the UK as a young child, moved back when she was 11 and lived here for most of her adult life. Then less than 10 years ago, she relocates to the UK and now she has an English accent?
What gives? Is Gillian just a pretentious snob?

These anti-John Barrowman comments are such fabricated bullshit. John is about as nice and cheerful and fun and thoughtful as they come, and he is devoted to his hot spouse. He is insanely talented and he could become more famous in America if the right deal came along but he's quite content in the UK so why should he give a fuck about "conquering America"? American show biz has too many downsides to it; most sensible people across the seas don't care or need to get involved with the bullshit in Hollywood. That is doubly true for gay actors, since Hollywood is so homophobic.
by Anonymous | reply 165 | February 11, 2012 12:33 AM |
He has a lot of irons in the fire, and a pretty impressive ever evolving career. I think mainstream success in the US is off the table though. He'd have to make better choices than Desperate Housewives & Miracle Day. I can't believe he turned down a role on House.
I wish he'd ease up. He's aged too much in the last few years with his workaholism. When Captain Jack first appeared in 2005 (I think?) he was just so handsome.

Just saw him on a repeat of Celebrity Antiques Road Show. Yes he was a bit "exuberant" and extroverted but he was charming as hell and seemed nice. I knew an actor with the same personality who was definitely not very considerate as a friend, always everyone's friend in public.
But I have to agree with the above posters who praise him about how consistent he's been with being out for a long time, supporting gay rights and not shy about taking gay roles. He's attractive to a lot of people. It matters.
And the judgment about relationships and a person's sex life, rumoured or otherwise, from DL never ceases to entertain...
by Anonymous | reply 170 | March 21, 2014 8:58 AM |
He's out and proud. Love him.
by Anonymous | reply 171 | March 21, 2014 9:02 AM |
Ah memories... for all the posters asking what DL was like back in the golden days, Barrowman is a big memory for me .... the headless nude with a cock ring and white socks (is it or isn't it?)... the cock in a bun pic... all good stuff.
The fact that even people who dislike him acknowledge that they think he's pretty and have memories of his big dick explain why he's got something. And back in the day, he was that clean cut preppy boy with a wild side, it was a good fantasy for a lot of gay men.
The puritans on this thread -- today and then -- are ridiculous.
by Anonymous | reply 172 | March 21, 2014 9:36 AM |
I find him charming and cheeky in interviews. He gives the impression he's like that away from the cameras as well. And when he slips into the Scottish accent, well, I'm a sucker for it.
My nieces and nephew adore him so he has that appeal across the board.

"intolerable loudmouth" sums him up nicely, r16. I think he has peaked or is ovah here now, he has not been on tv so much lately, in fact not for months. For a while there he was everywhere with his book, his records, his tours, his tv shows including saturday night family shows. Last I saw him he was reduced to doing some Dog talent show !
by Anonymous | reply 176 | March 21, 2014 11:51 AM |
He is excellent on stage in a musical. He's handsome and talented, he just hasn't got a suitable role in US to show his talents.
by Anonymous | reply 177 | March 21, 2014 2:46 PM |
The Brits have been fed up with him for some time now. He's no longer going to be handed shows by BBC executives who he slept with in his early years. He also burned a lot of bridges when he worked in the US due to his big mouth. And, frankly, he's not THAT talented. Nice singing voice, nice looking but a mediocre actor who stumbled on to a good character (Captain Jack) once. That's it.

I like him. Not keen on all the duff shows he does but I think he just saw an opportunity to secure his finances with all the Torchwood love and took it. Can't blame him for that. He does the occasional current affairs panel show in the UK and always comes across well - fundamentally positive and thoughtful.
He also made a great documentary about being gay.

His "name" in America is because in England he has a name. He is ok, sorta' a bit of a nance at times and it shows on screen. He is getting little pudgy. If you can stand it, terrific personality when he is on. Like many gays together a long time, it often takes a third to spice up the "marriage."
