Saddest Showbiz Love Story

Whether it’s a love affair that ended in tragedy or a desire unfulfilled, what do you think is the saddest showbiz love story?

by Anonymousreply 259April 24, 2024 5:48 AM

Clark Gable and Carole Lombard. She died in plane crash on her way back to see him from USO show. (Good thread idea, OP!)

Joan and Franchot. He helped her get cultured. Sadly, she couldn't carry a child to term with him even though she got pregnant. She was at the height of her career but just couldn't have it all. So, she adopted Christina the year of that divorce, and the rest, as they say, is history. She took care of Tone when he was down and out, more than a decade after his trials and tribulations with Barbara Payton were over. He was never the same after that beating he took.

Both deaths devastated me, because I oved them so much, in a completely heterosexual way.

Clark Gable and Loretta Young.

Fuck the Catholic Church.

by Anonymousreply 21April 10, 2024 9:40 PM

by Anonymousreply 29April 10, 2024 10:18 PM

by Anonymousreply 30April 10, 2024 10:19 PM

William Holden and Audrey Hepburn. If I recall she was deeply in love with him and vice versa but she had to leave him 1, because if his drinking and 2, he had had a vasectomy and she desperately wanted kids. From what I read they never nearly fully got over each other.

I would also add Lucy and Desi. Sure they had some great years and children and maintained a friendship but when you see how in love with each other they were on ILL and then you see Desi threw it all away because he could never keep it in his pants and it really is truly tragic. These men and their dicks....

They were married for nine years and had a son together. A year after their divorce, their son died tragically. Feeling guilty over her son's death, she fell into a deep depression, and despite the fact that he was no longer her husband, Bixby continued to support Benet emotionally and financially.

Benet ended up in a lesbian relationship with talk show host Tammy Bruce, which Bixby was supportive of. When that relationship ended, Benet became despondent and shot herself in the house she shared with Bruce in front of Bruce. Bixby was one of the first people Bruce contacted after Benet's suicide.

Very minor celebs in comparison to the others on this thread, but this one was the first that came to my mind. Mark Speight was a very popular Children's BBC presenter who was engaged to his former "See It, Saw It" co-star Natasha Collins. They did cocaine together and he found her dead in the bath the next morning. He was arrested on suspicion of murder, which obviously attracted a lot of media coverage. The coroner eventually ruled that her cause of death was misadventure (she had scalded herself in the bath while high on coke - i.e. doing a Whitney even before Whitney did), and Mark was not charged. A few days after the ruling, he was reported missing. A week later, his body was found hanging near Paddington Station; there was a note in his pocket saying he no longer wanted to live without Natasha.

Having grown up watching Mark Speight, his death seems in hindsight almost like a dress rehearsal for Robin Williams's, despite the vast disaparity in their fame. They both had high-energy, manic personas, and so many people have happy childhood memories of watching them, yet their deaths were so bleak and desperate.

R152, However, Rex was a cad to wife Lilli Palmer. Kay Kendall was his mistress while married to Lilli. When Kay was diagnosed with cancer and given a short time to live, Rex made a “deal” with Lilli. If Lilli would agree to a divorce so Rex could marry Kay, he would return to her after Kay died.

Kay died and Rex never returned to Lilli.

That’s not quite true. Lilli was already having an affair with Carlos Thompson. The minute the divorce was finalized, she married Thompson and remained married to him until she died.

Maybe Rex told that story to save face but she was not interested in getting back with him.

R160 Unlike Gig himself.

by Anonymousreply 163April 12, 2024 4:10 PM

Liz grew weary of Gig’s boozing. She only married him to spite her father. Robert Montgomery was a strong conservative who disagreed with Elizabeth’s liberal beliefs.

by Anonymousreply 164April 12, 2024 5:22 PM

R164, Elizabeth and Robert were estranged for years.

by Anonymousreply 165April 12, 2024 5:41 PM

Robert was a good friend of Dwight Eisenhower; that should tell you everything you need to know about him and his mindset.

by Anonymousreply 166April 12, 2024 5:53 PM

Robert Montgomery despised his son-in-law Gig Young, whom he felt was "almost as old and not one quarter as successful as I am." Needless to say, he didn't attend his daughter's wedding.

The sad story here is Gig's fifth wife, Kim Schmidt, whom Gig met on the set of "Game of Death." Only three weeks into their marriage, Gig shot her in the back of the head before turning the gun on himself. She was only 31.

I think Liz Taylor and Mike Todd would have eventually divorced. (Mike Todd is the guy who died in a plane crash while married to Liz.)

by Anonymousreply 175April 12, 2024 9:12 PM

The well known fact that Todd slapped Elizabeth around may have had something to do with that divorce, R175.

by Anonymousreply 178April 12, 2024 9:32 PM

Richard Burton also slapped Liz around. I think it was Debbie Reynolds who said that she (and Eddie Fisher?) went to Liz's house for dinner. Liz and Dick argued, then disappeared and it was apparent that Dick was slapping her around. Debbie was appalled and aghast. Meanwhile, Liz took it in stride as part of the marriage.

by Anonymousreply 179April 12, 2024 9:37 PM

I’ve read a couple of Liz biographies. She apparently enjoyed physically fighting with her partners. She fought passionately.

by Anonymousreply 180April 12, 2024 9:46 PM

[quote][R118] yes he was, he was also jealous of the attention she got when they made public appearances together, and he slapped her around. Joe was abusive...because he loved her so much. I've read a couple biographies of them both and Joe was scary. Volatile.

No physical proof he hit her. Just unnamed make-up girls who "saw" bruises or Amy Greene who also lied about Monroe having multiple abortions.

by Anonymousreply 181April 12, 2024 9:49 PM

R179, I read that story too but I believe it was Mike Todd.

It happened before Liz broke up Eddie and Debbie which happened before she was with Burton.

by Anonymousreply 182April 12, 2024 9:50 PM

R179, I doubt that Debbie went to Liz's house while she was married to Burton - it was after the Eddie Fisher fiasco.

R182, Yes, it was indeed Mike Todd, and in Debbie's words Todd "hauled off and SLUGGED" Elizabeth and knocked her out of the chair. Debbie was aghast and threw him out of her house. Elizabeth, though, protested, "Debbie, we were just playing!"

Debbie witnessed them duke it out several more times and afterwards they'd run off and jump in the sack or do it right in the pool. I guess the smacking around was foreplay.

I think she was plain bored during her fat period. She was married to the US senator, living in Washington DC.

by Anonymousreply 195April 13, 2024 12:50 AM

Wagner despised her.

Re R227, I always heard that it was while playing a game of sardines with the Tyrone Powers, Cesar Romero, Gene Tierney and Oleg Cassini, when Primmie Niven plunged down the steep cellar stairs, thinking the door led to a closet.

by Anonymousreply 233April 18, 2024 7:04 PM

by Anonymousreply 234April 18, 2024 8:10 PM

[quote]Actual suicide was a result of swallowing lye, alkali, or another unidentified caustic substance on top of the barbiturates which were ingested as detailed in her posthumously published journals. The acidic effect of the poisonous agent was an immediate cause of death which propelled her body through a decorative glass screen.
