People who vanished

Are there any disappearances that fascinate you?

For me it's:

Jimmy Hoffa

The Lost Colony of Roanoke

Not so much disappearances, rather weird and sudden appearances fascinate me.

Like Kaspar Hauser, or Jerome, the mystery man of Nova Scotia, or the Green Children of Woolpit.

The Lost Colony of Roanoke is at the top of my list. When I was in 7th grade, our family saw "The Lost Colony" - an outdoor play about Raleigh's settlement on the Outer Banks. Back in school I did a report on what I had learned. In 8th grade, I had read more stories, so I updated the report. All through high school, I studied everything available about the Lost Colony - used it for English papers, book reports, history reports, etc. In collge, the Lost Colony found its way into my classes.

I still watch for LC stories, but also have a keen interest in the 1565 Spanish settlement in St. Augustine, U.S. battleships in WWII, and gay history.

R4, what can you tell us about the LC? What do you think most likely happened?

by Anonymousreply 6June 15, 2010 8:25 PM

R4, what do you think happened to the Lost Colony?

I think they angered the Native Americans, there was a battle, and those who survived became assimilated into the N.A.s.

I have often wondered what happened to the Welsh settlers who arrived in Mobile Bay, Alabama, with Prince Madoc around 1182. Thomas Jefferson thought that their descendants became part of the Mandan tribe on the Great Plains; and Lewis and Clark were aware of the presence of European features and of Welsh-derived words in that tribe when they visited it on their way west to the Pacific. Regarding the Roanoke Island settlers, supposedly, 18th century colonists in the Carolinas and Georgia were aware of the presence of blond-haired and blue-eyed Indians in the back parts of their respective colonies. At the time, many colonists there linked these anomalous characteristics to the Roanoke Island settlers.

I think they moved inland and intermarried with the natives. It's difficult to say if the move was the idea of the colonists or if they were forced. That area of the Outer Banks can get very stormy so it's easy to see that they may have wanted to away from the barrier island.

When we had more coastal settlements in following centuries, the settlers would find blue-eyed people, some with fair skin, and some with light hair, among the natives. It's thought they decended from Raleigh's colonists.

by Anonymousreply 16June 15, 2010 10:02 PM

There was a famous murder case called "The Main Line Murders." Joseph Wambaugh's book "Echoes in the Darkness" is the definitive source of information for this case.

A homely, divorced high school teacher named Susan Reinert because smitten with a charming, sociopathic fellow teacher named William Bradfield. She gave him $25,000 in CASH to invest for her, and took out $730,000 in life insurance coverage. She changed her will so that Bradfield would be the sole beneficiary, executor and trustee of her estate, believing that Bradfield would be soon be her husband. Previously her brother had been her executor and her two children, 11 year old Karen and 10 year old Michael, were the beneficiaries of her estate.

Bradfield teamed up with the high school's former principal, a sociopath named Jay Smith whose interests included robbery and bestiality. Susan Reinert ended up naked and dead in the hatchback of her car in a parking lot, beaten severely and with chain marks on her body. She was dead of a morphine overdose. The last time anyone saw her she was driving away from her house around nine o-clock at night...her children were with her.

Her children, Karen and Michael, disappeared and were never seen or heard from again. They were declared legally dead eventually, but no trace of them was ever found, unless you count a little green metal pin that was found in Jay Smith's car. Karen had an identical pin that she wore practically all the time.

By all accounts the Reinert children were bright, active, nice, polite, respectful, immensely loveable children. Looking at pictures of them is heart-breaking; they look so sweet, so innocent.

Bradfield and Smith were convicted of the murders of Susan, Michael and Karen Reinert. Bradfield died in prison; Smith was on death row for some years, but managed to get released on a technicality. He died a few years ago.

Smith's daughter and son-in-law also disappeared, never to be seen or heard from again. This happened before Smith was imprisoned; it's believed he murdered them too.

I still think of the Reinert children. Such wonderful young people they were with their whole lives ahead of them...and then suddenly they were gone, never to be found. Goddamn their stupid mother and their murderers.

by Anonymousreply 42June 16, 2010 11:43 AM

I read the Wikipedia article on the Gosch story. On the surface, it appears very tragic but after thinking about some particulars, it becomes very odd. The strangest thing is the supposed visit of the grown Johnny to his mother. For one thing, why, after all of the time while he was in captivity, would his captors suddenly allow him to visit his mother? Also, since it was only Johnny and his mother in the room with the other man, would she make no attempt to get him away or subdue or injure the man? All she would have had to so was start screaming to draw attention. Instead, she presumable sat there quietly while her missing son paid her a visit? Does anyone know the latest developments in the Gosch case?

by Anonymousreply 43June 16, 2010 2:23 PM

For people in New York: In the late '90's there was a story about a landlord who allegedly "disappeared" a couple of his tenants who had a rent-controlled apartment (I think in Chelsea or Soho). He had a really antagonistic relationship with them and wanted to rent their place out for the market rate. They were suddenly gone and never heard from again. Anybody remember this story? I think newspaper accounts implied there wasn't enough evidence to actually arrest the landlord. He was a "person of interest".

by Anonymousreply 44June 16, 2010 2:48 PM

That Gosch case is nine kinds of fucked up. The mother sounds crazy as a loon, too. "White slavery ring?" And the boy, even after growing up AND paying her a visit doesn't find a way to get himself out of that situation? Brainwashing, slavery rings, it all sounds so "complicated." How the hell does one get entangled in that shit? One day you have a normal, ordinary life and the next your son has been kidnapped and sold into white slavery? WTF? There has got to be more to it than what that crazy website explains. Perhaps the mother is in on it, too, in some bizarre way.

R47, the bound boy in the Gosch story is explained in the Wikipedia article. The photo was somehow traced back to a group of boys who were playing escape tricks (daring each other to be tied up and then attempting to free themselves). A detective who investigated the photos found nothing wrong, especially nothing which would connect the photos to any child sex salvery ring.

[quote]For people in New York: In the late '90's there was a story about a landlord who allegedly "disappeared" a couple of his tenants who had a rent-controlled apartment (I think in Chelsea or Soho).

It was in the financial district; my brother and his family live in the building, which is now owned by a different landlord. My brother moved in several years after the disappearance and subsequent sale of the building, but his upstairs neighbors (who've lived there 25 years or so) are certain the former landlord killed/hired someone to kill the missing tenants.

The landlord was never formally implicated in the tenants' disappearance, but did spend time in jail later for some other incident. I can't remember the exact nature of the crime he was jailed for, but I know the evidence included a dead person's credit card that turned up in his possession.

r56, that description of the guy said that he had a discolored and blistered jaw and was recovering from a gunshot wound at the time of his disappearance. Sounds like a rough trade Italian thug from the composite. Of course, that's a stereotype but it makes it seem more likely or raises a question as to whether he might have been involved in some untoward activities or been around some "scene" where violence occurred or was not uncommon. Maybe he just pissed off the wrong person or people. Maybe a drug deal gone bad. Maybe even the mafia!

Noreen Gosch's website is strange, especially the 3 you tube videos sent in by a guy that lived in the Omaha area at the time, and was a gay hustler when he was younger. He does make a convincing argument that there is a cover up.

I don't think a child pedophile ring is so far fetched. They found a pedophile ring connected with the French government a few years back. Didn't Robert De Niro have a connection to it?

That family vacationing in a cabin in California I think. Blood all over but no one next door heard anything and no bodies ever found except for one head years later. Very chilling story, especially sad that a friends slept over that evening and she went missing too.

by Anonymousreply 65June 16, 2010 8:55 PM

The Keddie Murders R65. Very bizarre in that no one saw or heard anything and the cabins are close together. My guess is that someone followed the son and his friend into the house. They were hitchhiking before right before that. I just can't guess a motive unless it was retribution for a bad drug deal or something.

by Anonymousreply 67June 16, 2010 9:23 PM

The Keddie murders fascinate me because so little seems to be published regarding the victims. Who were they? What was their background, home life, etc. like and were they living or just vacationing in the cabin? Where is the father of these kids? Questions abound and I've been unsuccessful so far in getting info. If anyone has any further info I would love to know it.

I love watching those "disappeared" episodes but I hate that they are unresolved. Anyone have some that were eventually found out?

When I was in high school there was this girl in my grade. A nice pretty popular girl... her mother died when we were in ninth grade. She had four siblings and her Dad was this ageing hippy... the siblings were the type who hugged each other a lot.

She had a brother who was a year younger than her... he was very slight and childlike in appearance.. a bit of a brainy nerd but also very popular.

It seems he was anorexic and over the summer when he was 16 he was admitted to hospital.

One morning the nurse checked on him and his bed was empty. He was never seen again. This was 26 years ago.

Not really r90. The police file says he weighed 84 lbs at the time. He was likely too weak to get very far on his own. The hospital was just a few blocks from where I lived at the time, with a few acres of forest and field nearby, and I always found it weird that there wasn't any sort of a search. If he'd escaped on his own he may well have crawled into a ravine or a drainage pipe and died. The subject became completely off limits for the family (can't really blame them).

I'm surprised no one has ever written a book - or made a movie about - the Keddie Murders, r66. I think the mother may have been involved in drug dealing somehow - the most likely suspects were drug dealers who lived in the same town.

There are a lot of pics of the cabin - it's shocking how close it was to the other cabin (where the other daughter was sleeping) - and that no one heard anything when there was so much carnage.

The missing daughter's body was finally found, about three years later.

by Anonymousreply 111June 17, 2010 8:40 PM

r109, to me, the most likely scenarios would be:

1. The biological mother is hiding him (since most child abductions are by the non-custodial parent).

2. All fired up after the science fair, he wandered into the woods looking for those damned frogs and died by accident or elements.

3. The stepmother did it. She's the last one to see him.

Everyone's being so tight-lipped about the case, I imagine the authorities are focusing on foul play. I doubt it was a stranger--they may be watching family members and waiting for someone to trip up.

Why is Nancy Grace ignoring this, btw?

Dusty at R100 I agree. Having grown up in Springfield I found the entire case fasinating. My mom's best friend gave Sheryl her dog.. Ms. Levitt was Francie's hairdresser as I recall. That little dog a yorkie?? would have been the only witness at the house. And was seen on some of the news footage. When I was in college at SMSU I worked summers at Edward Keith Interiors (not sure what it is called now but it's still a design furniture store) which faced Glenstone and the back parking lot looked out on that house. The McCall family went to my stepfather's church Westminister Presbyterian and he always said the parents never gave up home. At one time, weren't the police looking at the son of the family who owned the Carnahan Fence Company as a suspect? Don't have any family left in that area, so I don't know any new details. But, yes it remains a fascinating case.

The Raoul Wallenberg story, from the date of his detention by Soviet forces in 1945, is creepy. Like a nightmare spy novel.

If they did execute him soon afterward, c. 1947, they feared letting the news get out.

If they kept him in prison, in secret, they thought they might trade him for someone really important. But the fact of his detention was so hateful - they couldn't let him go - so they were trapped.

The story about the boy from Oregon is haunting. One minute he is a happy, smiling boy all proud of his science project and a few minutes later god knows what horror he had to face.

I don't think anyone here has mentioned all the missing and killed girls in Juarez, Mexico. This has been going on for more than a decade. Most of them have come to Juarez to work in factories there. Many are found murdered in various ditches or out in the desert, but some are never heard from again. The Mexican government is too inept and/or corrupt to do anything about it, and even though Juarez is so close to the border, the US has only gotten involved when a couple of American women were involved.

(June 18) -- The search for missing 7-year-old Kyron Horman is now focused on the boy's stepmother, Terri Moulton Horman.

Two weeks after the little boy disappeared from his Oregon elementary school, Willamette Week reports that investigators have determined that Moulton Horman was not where she said she was on the day her stepson vanished.

Police say Moulton Horman's cell phone records show that on June 4, the day Kyron was last seen, she was on Sauvie Island, five miles from Kyron's school. Rescuers have been combing that island for any signs of the second-grader since June 10.

Willamette Week, citing unnamed law-enforcement officials "from agencies at the city, county and federal level," says Moulton Horman raised suspicions almost immediately for having claimed to have gone to the gym after reporting Kyron missing.

"Hitting the gym," she wrote on her Facebook wall that morning.

Adding on from r127, you guys should pick up "The Daughters of Juarez" by Tereza Rodriguez. She's a journalist with Univision and I think she was on "Primer Impacto" for those who watch spanish TV.

Excellent journalist and has been investigating the case for years. It's the best play-by-play of all the events regarding the mass killings in Juarez. Everything from the bullshit investigations to even telling the story about a woman that was shown an album of photos of some young women being raped, killed and set on fire by a group of policemen.

Isn't Lisa Nicole Carson working on something now? She was found, right?

by Anonymousreply 142June 18, 2010 8:28 PM

Although, she doesn't state her personal opinion, she does make a case against the "Egyptian" being the killer, or at least the only killer.

She details the various sightings by witness like the Man in Black (cowboy hat, jeans, shirt and boots) being seen talking to or near at lease 2 girls that were killed. Other possibilities she points out are the Police, Drug lords, Company workers (especially the management/owners), groups of men in high power position and serial killer(s) that cross the boarder from the US.

The impression I was left by her book was that it could have been a serial killer or killers running around but now, because of the "who gives a shit" attitude of the police, others seem to have joined in on the fun. It's clear to everyone that you can kill a young Mexican woman and no one will find out. Any Tom, Dick or Harry can kill and rape all he wants. So it can actually be all of the above.

This case is so fucking big. Lawyers being gun down by cops, women being raped by the police, bodies being thrown in the middle of the city, FBI being bugged by the Mexican Government, parents being told that their daughters just ran away or were prostitutes, US Corporations not caring about what happens to their workers and women lining up outside the coroners office everyday to see if the newest body is their daughter.

You need to read the book to actually be able to process half of what is going on over there.

Oh, I forgot to add that one of the best shake-your-head moments is when a lawyer for one of the accused is gun down in public by the police. He was driving and called his father in a panic saying he was being tailed by a black Jeep Cherokee. The father, a lawyer too, stayed on the line with him while trying to make his way to his son. Next thing he knows he hears his son yell and hears shots. Oops! says the police; it was mistaken identity; he wouldn't pull over, oh and he pulled a gun on officers - hence the automatic gunfire holes riddled all over the car.

The best part: One photographer for the press got there and took photos of the Jeep the cops were driving and the following day when back and found the car and took more photos. When the press looked at both photos, they saw that the Jeep was now dirty (as if driven in mud, taken somewhere else) and had newly made bullet holes that was not there the day before.

Straight out cover up with photo evidence. Amazing.

1940s Hollywood starlet Jean Spangler.

On October 7, 1949, Spangler left her home in Los Angeles around five p.m., leaving her daughter with her sister-in-law and telling her that she was going to meet her former husband to talk about his child support payment that had been due a week before, then on to work on a movie set. The last person to see her was a clerk in a store near her home, who said she appeared to be waiting for someone. She has not been seen again. Spangler's mother was visiting family in Kentucky at the time. Spangler's sister-in-law, Sophie, went to the police and filed a missing person report the next day.

[edit] Police investigationSpangler had told her sister-in-law that she was going to work on movie set after she met with her former husband. She had worked as an extra and bit-part actress in movies for several different Hollywood studios. Police checked, but none of the studios had any work in progress or were even open the evening of October 7.

Spangler had been through a long custody battle with her former husband and won custody of the child Christine in 1948. Dexter Benner, her former husband, had been awarded custody in 1946 at the time of the divorce. Police questioned Benner about her statement to her sister-in-law that she was going to meet him about the overdue child support payment. He said that he had not seen his former wife for several weeks before Spangler disappeared. His wife Lynn Lasky Benner stated that he was with her at the time of the disappearance. Benner and Lasky had been married only one month before Spangler's disappearance.

Two days later on October 9, Spangler's purse was found near the entrance gate to Griffith Park in Los Angeles with both of the straps on one side torn loose as if it had been ripped from her arm. Sixty police officers and over one hundred volunteers searched the 4,107-acre (16.62 km2) natural terrain park, but no other clues were found. There was no money in the purse (her sister-in-law said that she had no money when she left her house the evening of her disappearance) so the police ruled out robbery as a motive. There was an unfinished note in the purse addressed to a "Kirk," which read, "Can't wait any longer, Going to see Dr. Scott. It will work best this way while mother is away,...". The note ended with a comma as if it hadn't been finished.

Neither "Kirk" nor "Dr. Scott" could be located, and neither Spangler's family nor her friends knew anyone by those names. Spangler's mother, Florence, returned to Los Angeles and told police that someone named Kirk had picked up Jean at her house twice, but he stayed in his car and didn't come in. Police searched for Kirk and questioned every doctor with the last name Scott in Los Angeles, but none of them had a patient with the last name Spangler or Benner, Jean Spangler's former married name. Spangler had once been involved with a person she called Scotty, who had beaten her, threatening to kill her if she broke the relationship off, but her lawyer said she had not seen him since 1945.

Spangler had completed a bit part in the then unfinished film Young Man with a Horn starring the actor Kirk Douglas. Douglas was vacationing in Palm Springs and heard about the disappearance. He called the police and told them he was not the Kirk mentioned in the note before police knew there was any connection. Douglas was interviewed by the head of the investigating team and stated that he had heard the name and that Spangler had been an extra in his new film, but he didn't know her personally.

(I think Douglas knows a LOT more about Jean Spangler. And he aint telling)

R169, there's a book about Jean Spangler. A mystery novel, I mean, by Megan Abbott, called "The Song is You."

Don't have time to post a link, but for me it's the Jamison family of Eufaula, Oklahoma. HOLY SHIT.

There is some weird, weird shit that happened there. Two adults and their six year old daughter out looking for land in a remote area, and a week later their truck and a bag with $32,000 under the driver's seat was found.

Their cell phones, wallets, etc. were all in the truck. A photo of the daughter taken just behind the truck on an easily recognized rock was on the mom's phone. Who took it, and why?

This was in 2009 - I was obsessed with it for a few days after seeing it on Disappeared (ID Discovery) last week.

The Dover Air Force Base mortuary for years disposed of portions of troops' remains by cremating them and dumping the ashes in a Virginia landfill, a practice that officials have since abandoned in favor of burial at sea.

The mortuary in Delaware, the main point of entry for the nation's war dead and the target of federal investigations of alleged mishandling of remains, engaged in the practice from 2003 to 2008, according to Air Force officials. The manner of disposal was not disclosed to relatives of fallen service members.

Air Force officials acknowledged the practice Wednesday in response to inquiries from The Washington Post. They said the procedure was limited to fragments or portions of body parts that were unable to be identified at first or were later recovered from the battlefield, and which family members had said could be disposed of by the military.

Lt. Gen. Darrell G. Jones, the Air Force's deputy chief for personnel, said the body parts were cremated, then incinerated, and then taken to a landfill by a military contractor. He likened the procedure to the disposal of medical waste.

Jones also could not estimate how many body parts were handled in this way. "That was the common practice at the time, and since then our practices have improved," he said.

Gari-Lynn Smith, portions of whose husband's remains were disposed of in the landfill after his 2006 death in Iraq, said she was "appalled and disgusted" by the way the Air Force had acted. She learned of the landfill disposal earlier this spring in a letter from a senior official at the Dover mortuary.

"My only peace of mind in losing my husband was that he was taken to Dover and that he was handled with dignity, love, respect and honor," Smith said. "That was completely shattered for me when I was told that he was thrown in the trash."

An Air Force document shows that the landfill is in King George County, Va. Officials with Waste Management Inc., which operates the landfill, said the company was not informed about the origin of the ashes. "We were not specifically made aware of that process by the Air Force," said Lisa Kardell, a spokeswoman for the company.

The Dover mortuary changed its policy in June 2008, Jones said. Since then, the Navy has placed the cremated remains of body parts in urns that are buried at sea.

Asked if it was appropriate or dignified to incinerate troops' body parts and dispose of them in a landfill, Jones declined to answer directly. "We have recognized a much better way of doing things," he said. "Let me be emphatic: I think the current procedures are better."

The disclosure of the landfill disposals comes in the aftermath of multiple federal investigations that documented "gross mismanagement" at Dover Air Force Base, which receives the remains of all service members killed in action in Afghanistan, Iraq or elsewhere overseas.

On Tuesday, the Air Force acknowledged that the mortuary had lost a dead soldier's ankle and an unidentified body part recovered from an air crash; had sawed off a Marine's arm so his body would fit in his casket; and had improperly stored and tracked other remains.

The Air Force disciplined three mortuary supervisors after an 18-month investigation, but has not fired any of them, despite calls from lawmakers and veterans' groups for tougher action.

"What happened at Dover AFB exceeds on many levels the nationwide anger that resulted from reports of mistreated wounded at the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 2007 and reports of lost or misplaced graves at Arlington National Cemetery," said Richard L. DeNoyer, the national commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. "You only get one chance to return our fallen warriors to their families with all the dignity and respect they deserve from a grateful nation — and that mortuary affairs unit failed."

Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta on Tuesday commended the Air Force for the "thoroughness" of its investigation. His spokesman, George Little, said Wednesday that Panetta is leaving "open the possibility for further accountability" and that "there is no excuse for this kind of incident to occur."

Under military culture and regulations, the armed services have a special obligation to care for fallen troops and their families. All troops killed overseas return to Dover in flag-draped transfer cases and are honored in what the military calls a "dignified transfer" ceremony.

Smith, spent more than four years trying to find out what happened to her husband's remaining body parts before she learned of the landfill disposal. Sgt. 1st Class Scott R. Smith served more than 16 years in the Army and volunteered for dangerous duty defusing and destroying bombs in Iraq.

He was killed when stepped on a pressure plate that triggered a buried bomb.

Initially, Gari-Lynn Smith said she was led to believe that her husband's entire body was returned for the funeral. When Dover officials told her that his body was too badly mangled for an open-casket funeral, she said she became worried that some of his remains had not been buried with the casket.

"I knew he was blown up and had amputated limbs, but I was not getting a straight answer from the Air Force about what had happened to his body," Smith said.

She received her husband's autopsy report in 2007 and learned that some remains had not been found in time to include in the casket.

Shortly after Scott Smith's death, his parents had filled out a Defense Department form giving the Air Force permission to "make appropriate disposition" of any partial remains discovered after the body was buried, according to Pentagon records.

Gari-Lynn Smith said she believed that Dover officials would treat the remains with respect. The deceased soldier's parents declined to comment.

In April, Trevor Dean, a senior official at the Dover mortuary, informed her in a letter that some of her husband's body parts were cremated and dumped in a landfill in King George County. In the letter, Dean listed her husband's first name incorrectly, an oversight that Smith saw as yet another sign of disregard for her spouse.

"This has been nothing but a nightmare," she said.

Dean was formerly the top civilian deputy at the mortuary. The Air Force said he received a lower pay grade and voluntarily accepted a transfer to a lesser position in September as a result of separate allegations of mishandling of remains. He still works at Dover.

In an e-mail Wednesday, Dean declined to comment about the Smith case or the landfill practices. "We are pleased with the positive change in the program," he said in reference to reforms the Air Force says it has implemented at the mortuary.

Relatives of other service members whose remains were mishandled at Dover said Wednesday that they were shocked to learn of the errors.

Stan McDowell, the father of Capt. Mark R. McDowell, who died in an F-15E fighter jet crash in Afghanistan in July 2009, said the Air Force informed him Saturday that it couldn't account for a four-inch piece of flesh that may have belonged to his son.

"They were very apologetic, and it was all heartfelt," Stan McDowell said. "We know Mark was a Christian, and that he's in heaven. So we look at it like — okay, so maybe there are some remains that did not end up in his burial site. . . . That's not really a concern to us. And the reason is: We know Mark is separated from his body, and that he's in heaven."

The Air Force said it was uncertain whether the missing piece of flesh belonged to McDowell or his friend, Air Force Capt. Thomas J. Gramith, who was killed in the same jet crash. The other remains of the two airmen are buried together, under the same headstone, at Arlington National Cemetery.

Patricia O'Kane-Trombley, Gramith's mother, said she was assured by the Air Force's promises to ensure that something like this never happens again. "I don't like mix-ups. Don't get me wrong," she said. "If Tom were here, he'd say, ‘What can we do to make this better?' "

[quote]I have often wondered what happened to the Welsh settlers who arrived in Mobile Bay, Alabama, with Prince Madoc around 1182. Thomas Jefferson thought that their descendants became part of the Mandan tribe on the Great Plains; and Lewis and Clark were aware of the presence of European features and of Welsh-derived words in that tribe when they visited it on their way west to the Pacific.

The Welsh stuff was debunked long, long ago. There are no Welsh-derived words in Mandan and the DNA evidence does not show any Welsh types among the Mandan.

It's all a silly legend. Link goes to a Welshman's article explaining how there is no link between the two languages.

The Fandel kids went missing from my hometown when I was growing up in Alaska. It was really haunting. Everyone knows everyone in Sterling/Soldotna/Kenai, Alaska, and I went to school with their extended family members. It was even more upsetting because I was the same age as Amy, and thought I would be snatched too, for sure.

I still find it haunting. I think of Scott and Amy every now and then. I thought Scott was beautiful when I was 9. His picture was in every paper. Sad.

Authorities continue search for O.C. English professor

November 12, 2011 | 8:14 am

Orange County authorities continue to ask the public for help in searching for an English professor at Saddleback College who has been missing since August.

Amy Ahearn, 40, who lives in Lake Forest, did not show up for classes at the college when the semester started on Aug. 22.

On Nov. 20, a search team from Saddleback College will be traveling through the Norwalk area, where she was last seen, according to her sister, Marjorie Ahearn.

Ahearn has no family in California, Marjorie Ahearn said, though she was recently divorced by her husband, a teacher at another community college. Her family, from Illinois, has hired a private detective to help locate her.

Ahearn was last seen in Norwalk on Sept. 18, when she was taken in by a family who found her in front of their home on Ferina Street. The next day they took her to a motel and she wandered away while waiting for a room to come available. A family member later saw her in front of a Norwalk grocery store.

Before that, Ahearn was seen on Sept. 9. A private investigator spoke with an attorney who said Ahearn came to his office, looking disheveled, inquiring about an attorney to handle estate issues and a complaint against “O.C. Police.” The attorney told the detective he could not help her and she left.

A paralegal in the area told the investigator that he too had spoken with Ahearn several times about a case against “O.C. Police.” She told him she was living in her car.

Ahearn was also reported seen renting a sport utility vehicle at National Car Rental at John Wayne International Airport in Santa Ana earlier that month. A clerk rented her the vehicle as she was a frequent customer and had a debit card. The vehicle has been returned. It is a tan Hyundai SUV GLS 210, with a license plate of GLUR978.

Ahearn's family says she may suffer from Huntington’s Disease, a degenerative brain disease. Several members of her family suffer from the disease.

She is described as a white woman, 5-foot-6, with brown eyes and brown hair, weighing 140 pounds, though she may have lost weight.

Missing Orange County professor found in South Los Angeles November 12, 2011 | 7:40 pm

An Orange County English professor who has been missing since August was found Friday night, a family member said.

Amy Ahearn, 40, of Lake Forest was discovered by the Los Angeles Police Department in South Los Angeles and was being evaluated, said her sister, Marjorie Ahearn.

Marjorie Ahern said she was told by authorities that her younger sister did not appear to be physically injured. No other details were available on her condition Saturday night.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department could not immediately be reached for comment. An LAPD spokeswoman said the department would not comment on another agency’s missing persons case. The Saddleback College professor was reported missing after she did not show up for classes when the semester started Aug. 22. Her family said she may suffer from a degenerative brain disease, Huntington’s, which runs in the family.

Ahearn’s family, from Illinois, hired a private investigator and organized search parties in an effort to locate her.

She was last seen in mid-September in Norwalk, when she was taken in by a family who found her on the street in front of their home, but wandered off the next day.

Two of the weirdest, that make no sense to me:

The disappearance of all three of the lighthouse keepers at the Flannan Isles Lighthouse off Scotland, in 1900. No one will ever know the truth about what happened.

The disappearance of the three Beaumont children from Genelg Beach near Adelaide, Australia in 1966. there are all kinds of mysteries concerning people who have disappeared in or near Adelaide, which seems to be the mystery capital of Australia (the Taman Shud man was found here, and there have been many other mystery disappearances); but the Beaumont children's disappearance is the most unsettling, and is the most famous cold case in Australian history.

It has been more than two years since the disappearance of Toronto high school student Mariam Makhniashvili and despite a massive international investigation, police say they are no closer to knowing what happened to her.

According to Mariam's mother, Lela Tabidze, the morning of Sept. 14, 2009 was like any other, with Mariam and her brother George rushing to get ready for school.

Forest Hill Collegiate was just two blocks away from the family's mid-town Toronto apartment. George went in one door and Mariam headed for another. That was the last time anyone saw her.

When 17-year-old Mariam didn't come home after school, her father, Vakhtang Makniashvili made an anguished call to 9-1-1. That call launched what is considered the largest missing person search in Toronto history – by air, on land and water.

Officers knocked on 6,000 doors. They searched the school, talked with students, and checked the alibis of all the known local sex offenders, all in hopes of finding one clue that would help crack the case.

Massive public appeals kept tips coming in. Three weeks into the investigation, Mariam's backpack was discovered.

"We thought our prayers were basically answered because it was going to give us some direction to go in," said Det.-Const. Jennifer Young. Everything in her backpack seemed intact, both her books and her lunch were there. But there was no DNA or any other tangible evidence. In the end, the backpack turned out to be just one more dead end.

Police hoped further clues to Mariam's disappearance might surface in their investigation into the family's past. Toronto police asked Interpol and police in the Republic of Georgia to conduct background checks on the family but they uncovered nothing unusual.

"This was an ordinary family that lived an ordinary life" said Young.

Ugh, the Gosch thing almost made me wish I hadn't read it. Yes, the mother seems a bit unhinged but I'm sure I would too, under the circumstances.

Whether it is her son or not in the photos, there are some very disturbing photos of boys tied up and gagged on that site. And clearly they're not, as one person alleged, some kids playing "escape games." They were pretty sick stuff and there are adults in some of the photos.

I wouldn't advise clicking on the link to the mother's website if you're easily upset by child abuse.

As far as believing in the existence of pedophile rings, I can easily believe it. A friend who has worked for years for the local Boys and Girls Club is convinced there was one running out of there until recently, involving the former director and certain board members who were notorious for their displays of affection and inordinate attention to certain children (always boys).

My friend felt pretty helpless since she had no proof and no boys were making any allegations. But, as with the Sandusky case, the kids were underprivileged and pretty starved for attention. Coincidentally, a couple of years ago I met--independent of my friend--another former employee of the B&G Club and she told me she quit, and went back to waiting tables, for that exact reason: She couldn't prove anything but she was certain there were inappropriate things going on.

It's likely that many of these adults who disappear are in witness protection. The gov't is very good at erasing a witness's old identity. If this is the case, those people will never be found unless they decide to break the rules and contact non-protected friends or family.

[bold]Father of missing Mariam Makhniashvili sentenced to six years in prison for knife attacks[/bold]

The strange saga of missing teenager Mariam Makhniashvili took another twist Thursday, as police probed a potential sighting of the girl on the same day her father was sentenced to six years in prison for a series of violent knife attacks.

Having just learned that morning of the new lead in his daughter’s case, Vakhtang Makhniashvili, wearing a grey suit that matched his hair, sat hunched in the prisoner’s box as Justice Rebecca Rutherford delivered her ruling.

“This is a very sad case that has had serious consequences for many,” Judge Rutherford noted in her 18-page sentencing decision. “It is a case where a mentally ill man suffered a horrific event in his life and subsequently made decisions that led to equally horrific consequences. Mr. Makhniashvili is living every parent’s nightmare… Unfortunately [he] chose to deal with the ordeal alone.”

Makhniashvili pleaded guilty in May to three counts of aggravated assault in the stabbing of three people last year, including a neighbour he mistakenly believed was involved in his daughter’s 2009 disappearance and a Toronto couple who bailed him out of jail.

Makhniashvili stabbed neighbour Sean Ure in the abdomen “while screaming about his missing daughter” in May 2010, the court heard. David and Delores Langer posted Makhniashvili’s bail in that incident, but ceased acting as his sureties after he failed to abide by household rules. After being bailed out again, this time by his wife, Makhniashvili attacked the Langers, stabbing Mr. Langer in the abdomen and slashing Ms. Langer’s arm, apparently convinced they had something to do with an unfavourable newspaper article.

A pair of psychiatric reports entered as evidence found Makhniashvili likely suffered from delusional disorder, a major mental illness characterized, in his case, by delusions of persecution. The disorder appeared to have been triggered by the loss of his daughter, whose disappearance two years ago sparked a 6,000-home canvass of their Forest Hill neighbourhood.

According to his wife, Lela Tabidze, Makhniashvili became “completely consumed” with finding Mariam.

“[He] spent the majority of his time searching missing persons websites on the Internet and most, if not all, of his conversations were about finding their daughter,” Judge Rutherford noted, citing evidence from Ms. Tabidze. “Mr. Makhniashvili, on his own initiative, walked through ravines while armed with a knife searching for his daughter.”

With pretrial custody taken into account, Makhniashvili has four years and 11 months left to serve, though his lawyer said he could be out on parole in a fraction of that time.

“He wants to get better and stay better,” defence lawyer Calvin Barry said outside court, noting his client will continue to work on his psychiatric issues with prison doctors.

Ms. Langer, who attended the sentencing, said she had empathy for Makhniashvili’s circumstances, but the incident seriously damaged her ability to trust other people.

“I will never ever forget the scream that came out of my husband. I hear it constantly, daily,” said Ms. Langer, who still has a large scar on her wrist where the knife went in and remains on medication for the pain. “I live with flashbacks, nightmares. I feel the blood running down my arm.”

Coinciding with Makhniashvili’s sentencing, police issued a news release Thursday morning saying they were reviewing surveillance footage linked to a recent tip in Mariam’s case — the latest among hundreds of sightings over the years, including a much-publicized, but ultimately false, lead that she was in Alberta selling dream catchers.

The recent potential sighting was of an apparently homeless girl who resembled Mariam at a low-rise apartment building in the area of Victoria Park and St. Clair Avenue, Detective Sergeant Dan Nealon said.

“We are taking it seriously enough to try to get as much surveillance video out of this location as possible,” Det. Sgt. Nealon said. “There’s nothing to suggest that it’s confirmed that this is Mariam, but at the same time we can’t dismiss it 100%.”

A man came in started crying, picked her up and said he would take her to her mom as if her were the dad and she was never seen again. Some relatives tracked down the center she was in and said her parents were fine but in another location. That really bothers me sometimes. Did she get a new family or raped and murdered by a pedo?

Flight 19

by Anonymousreply 228December 10, 2011 5:10 AM

Flight 19 was the designation of five TBM Avenger torpedo bombers that disappeared on December 5, 1945 during a United States Navy-authorized overwater navigation training flight from Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale, Florida. All 14 airmen on the flight were lost, as were all 13 crew members of a PBM Mariner flying boat assumed to have exploded in mid-air while searching for the flight. Navy investigators could not determine the cause for the loss of Flight 19 but said the aircraft may have become disoriented and ditched in rough seas after running out of fuel.

Thanks for that link R248. In addition to the Colony info, I also found it interesting that Manteo had been to England twice, prior to the arrival of the Colony settlers in 1587. It's also interesting that Manteo was from a tribe that was to the south of Roanoke Island. You don't get that impression from viewing Paul Greene's "The Lost Colony."

By the time the English were trying to establish their Roanoke colony, the Spanish had already been in St. Augustine for 22 years. The English didn't like that and sent the pirate Francis Drake to attack and burn the town in Florida. The Spanish fled into the swamps and returned and rebuilt as soon as Drake sailed away.

Toronto police said Friday they believe Mariam Makhniashvili, the Toronto teen missing since September 2009, died following a fall from a "significant height."

Police also confirmed on Friday that skeletal remains found last week in a wooded area are Makhniashvili's. The Toronto teen disappeared outside her high school two and a half years ago.

Two men on a walk discovered human remains 10 days ago in a wooded area near Yonge Street and Highway 401. The remains had been there for two to three years.

At a press conference Friday, Toronto police Staff Insp. Greg McLane said the cause of death was consistent with a fall from a "significant height" and that she was likely alive at the time of the fall.

Police said they are not considering the case a homicide or a suspicious death. A highway overpass runs above the spot where the remains were found.

"The location where she was found was consistent with a fall from that overpass," said McLane."The findings are not consistent with that of a homicide or a suspicious death."

When asked if Mariam committed suicide, McLane said the post-mortem results "could be consistent with that conclusion."

He said the identity of the remains was confirmed through DNA testing.

Makhniashvili was last seen on Sept. 14, 2009, when she left her home for Forest Hill Collegiate Institute with her brother.

The siblings decided to enter the school through different doors, and Mariam, then 17 years old, was not seen again. Family had just arrived to Canada

The Makhniashvili family, originally from the Republic of Georgia, had only been in Toronto for three months when their daughter disappeared.

The parents lived in Los Angeles for five years before moving to Toronto, while Mariam and her brother lived with their grandparents in Georgia.

In the first year following her disappearance, police spent thousands of hours investigating, interviewing hundreds of people and poring over evidence.

The only solid clue was the discovery of her backpack and some school books in a parking lot the following month.

In charges unrelated to Mariam's disappearance, her father, Vakhtang Makhniashvili, was sentenced in December to six years in prison after pleading guilty to stabbing three people in 2010.

The charges followed two separate stabbing incidents, one involving a neighbour and the other a couple who had posted his bail.

Police were asked Friday why extensive searches for Makhniashvili conducted in the weeks following her disappearance failed to discover the remains.

"The information I have is that that specific area was not part of the original search grid. However, the original search grid did come close to that particular area," said McLane.

Det. Sgt. Dan Nealon said investigators still have more people they want to speak with about Makhniashvili's death. Police also want to review video from overhead highway cameras in the area.

He said the case was a difficult one for police.

"We weren't getting any further with respect to a criminal investigation. Most missing people when they do go, there is some sort of a trail that leads the police somewhere. In this case there wasn't any."

"There was no concrete or specific evidence to point in one way or the other as to where she may have disappeared to."

As another poster said, I don't know what to believe in the Johnny Gosch case. It sounds as though Noreen Gosch has incorporated details from the Colleen Stan kidnapping.

In 1977, Colleen Stan was kidnapped whilst hitchhiking and held captive for seven years. During that time, she was kept in a box under a waterbed for 23 a hours a day, raped, and subjected to torture and bondage. She was made to believe that her kidnapper was part of a powerful organization he called "The Company". He told her that if she tried to escape, The Company would kill her family and then torture her to death. After years of having this fear reinforced on a daily basis, Stan was completely brainwashed into thinking The Company was real and that her compliance was the only thing protecting her and her family.

A powerful demonstration of her brainwashing occurred in 1981 when Stan's kidnapper allowed her to visit her family unsupervised. During the visit, Stan never mentioned anything about what she had endured. The next day, her kidnapper - posing as a boyfriend - came to collect her. Again, Stan gave no indication of her situation and even posed with her kidnapper in a family photo.

Stan would be held captive for another three years. Even as her kidnapper allowed her to leave the house, get a job, and interact with neighbors, she never tried to escape. It only ended when the kidnapper's wife, who was a full accomplice in all of this, began to feel displaced by Stan in her husband's "affections". She called the police and eventually testified against her husband in exchange for full immunity.

So what is the point of my tl;dr story? I have two. One, it is possible that something similar happened to Johnny. He was kidnapped and brainwashed. When he returned home, he told his mother a story he had been led to believe; one involving powerful organizations and conspiracies. Two, Noreen Gosch has incorporated details similar to Colleen Stan's story into a fantasy narrative. I have no idea why she might have done this, but maybe it gives her hope. Colleen Stan eventually came home and maybe her son will, too.

Or, three, I'm completely wrong and it's none of the above.

Jimmy Hoffa was put into cement and now is buried somewhere in pavement, no one knows where exactly.

Roanoke Colony was assimiliated by nearby Indians. That is estabished, except for the few who refuse to believe the facts.

Michael Rockefeller went to one of the (still today) remotest areas in the world, surrounded himself by hostile tribes. He was killed.

Kaspar Hauser was a total fake.

DB Coooper is dead from the jump

Judge Crater was a crooked judge up to his neck in debt to the mob. They had been pressuring him to pay back or come up with favorable opinions for their people. No mystery to why he never came back, the mob killed him.

Oak Island is one of MANY such natural things that have been discovered. The only mystery is why this one is publicized and the others are not.

Johnny Gosch was kidnapped or more likely was gay, and went willingly with a guy. He was killed. Tragic but hardly unusual

Amelia Erhardt was flying without proper radio equipment over an ocean that covers like 75% of the world. It would've been luck if she HADN'T vanished.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I know several posters were interested in the Springfield Three case. There is an interesting interview at the link where the case comes up. True crime writer Christopher Hawley Martin believes the women were murdered by twin brothers/serial killers, Larry and Gary Hall.

Even if you're not interested in the Springfield Three case, the interview is worth a read to learn about twin brothers who incorporated murders into their cross country trips to civil war reenactments.

OP 4 years later who knows if you're reading this, or still alive, but here goes, for you or intrigued others.

I know 2 individuals who live in Indonesia, each claiming to have seen Michael Rockefeller's head/skull. Both are white: one is a Dutchman, trusted by Asmat artifact dealers and a long-timer in the region where Rockefeller disappeared, the other is an author/filmmaker Brit expat who's lived in Bali since the late 60s. Neither has reason to fabricate or sensationalize such experiences or information, given their age and professional status in their fields.

They maintain, with conviction, that he was taken by head hunters, the coup is held and revealed only with great discretion, and it still holds a strong mojo for those who have it in their midst.

by Anonymousreply 292September 28, 2014 12:42 AM

R292, how could they possibly tell it was Rockefeller after all this time, esp. If all that was left was the skull? Sorry, I am skeptical.

by Anonymousreply 293September 28, 2014 12:58 AM

What I find disturbing is that ever so often, you hear about some guy who gets arrested, and his house is searched, and there are two or three people, usually black female hookers, or somehow Mormon-related girls or young women, chained in the basement, where they've been for years. Because of their social situation, often nobody reports them missing. So they vanished, and nobody knew, or cared.

Imagine how many kids or young adults are trapped in such a situation nationwide. It must be in the hundreds, at least, I'd guess. Just a terrible fate.

by Anonymousreply 294September 28, 2014 1:07 AM

Well taken skepticism, Skeptical George. I will clarify, which I should have done earlier. The head is preserved. It is clearly a white man, a rarity. The skull which is allegedly Michael's shows western dental care appropriate to an upper class white man of his generation.

by Anonymousreply 299September 28, 2014 2:03 AM

R299 - did you mean me @ 295?

By impression of many, Michael was treading where he was woefully unprepared. By all accounts he was a well meaning but uninformed and relatively culturally ignorant privileged white guy in a place where very ancient and well defined ritualized practices were fully intact. A head for a head, honor maintained, boundaries maintained. It's a swampy place where enormous salt water crocs are host to humans. He was there during a time when tensions were mounting, and the wisdom of his collecting of funerary poles was questionable. The strong mentality of collecting and preserving cultures as a noble upper class enterprise still existed and it prevailed among his class, but with a 60s idealism added.

Some say he should never have chosen to swim back to the Asmat for help.

In western Pennsylvania there are three cases of young girls who vanished without a trace or any clues

The first was Mary Ann Verdecchia, a 10-year old parochial school students who lived in the Bloomfield neighborhood of Pittsburgh. She had a half-day of school and was running errand for a neighbor when she went missing in 1962. Pittsburgh Capt. Therese Rocco (ret.), head of the missing persons bureau for the department, said that is the one case haunted her.

In 1965, six-year old Kathy Ann Shea disappeared in Tyrone, Blair County; Tyrone is half way between Altoona and State College.

In 1985, eight year old Cherrie Mahan got off her school bus in Winfield Township, Butler County ... that was the last time anyone has seen her.

by Anonymousreply 301September 28, 2014 2:46 AM

I posted this on a different thread last night but it really belongs here.

Joe Pichler, a former child actor, went missing when he was 18 in 2006 and has never been found. They found his car with what was initially believed to be a suicide note but later determined to be a poem he'd written. Friends who were with him the night he disappeared say he was in good spirits. Some posts on internet articles indicate he might have been involved with drugs. Some believe his friends know more than they're telling. And there was one post from a guy in South Africa claiming a Joseph Pichler lives there and is still going by that name.

I'm just surprised there wasn't more publicity surrounding his disappearance. He played James Van Der Beek's little brother in "Varsity Blues" and did a bunch of the "Beethoven" sequels. Much lesser former "stars" have gotten much more publicity.

I just read a book about the Tamam Shud body by the policeman who inherited the cold case. Someone came forward in 1959 and said he saw a man fitting the description being carried along the beach the night before the body was found, but didn't report it at the time because he thought the man might be drunk. Also, there was evidence of blood pooling at the back of his head and shoulders. If the man was killed elsewhere and then brought to the beach, that means that there would have been time for a fatal poison to have worked it's way out of the bloodstream, because the time of death is pushed back.

Ear comparisons have shown that the Somerton body was most likely the biological father of the nurse's son (the nurse who pretended she didn't recognise him). Unfortunately, they can't get permission to exhume him.

I believe he was meeting someone and was taken somewhere and murdered with poison which was out of his system by the time the toxicology report was done. I think that the murderers placed the unusued bus tickets in his pocket as a red herring. Other than that, there is not much else to work with. I wish someone could translate the code in the book, but it doesn't seem likely that it will happen. It's such a cool mystery!

There was another Rubaiyat related murder when a man died, suspected to be by poison, in Sydney 3 years before the Tamam Shud body. He had a copy of the Rubaiyat open on his chest which was identified on the publishing page as a Methuen 7th edition. A few years ago it was discovered that Methuen only published 5 editions of the Rubaiyat - no identical copy of the Rubaiyat on that body has ever been found.

Ten-year-old Rebecca Savarese, on her way to school one wintry morning in 1993, was walking on the sidewalk at a busy intersection in Pittsfield MA when a man suddenly grabbed and pulled her toward his pickup truck at the curb.

She yelled and spun away, leaving him holding her empty backpack as she ran to safety. He dropped it on the sidewalk and casually drove away.

Only one passerby noticed the kidnapping attempt and wrote down the truck’s plate number. This led to the arrest of Louis Lent at his home – with hidden cages built into the walls – a murderer of dozens of children.

Kyron Horman was most likely killed my his stepmother. It's a shame she will probably never be charged. Although there was a big case in NJ years ago where the mom reported the kid (Timothy Wiltsey) missing from a carnival. The mother was recently charged with his murder after 23 years.

Etan Patz will always be fascinating, but I don't think we'll ever really know what happened to him.

Another fascinating case is Sabrina Aisenberg. She was a baby who went missing from her crib in Florida. The parents were suspected but never charged. The police wiretapped their home and they were a shady, but never charged. Oprah had them on years later in a very one sided interview. I personally think like Madeline Mcann's parents they were involved despite them being clears of wrong doing.

Finally this one from the summer that is also very mysterious, especially that the grandfather had dealings with the shady suspect and the grandparents were planning to move to Mexico of all places.

Memorial planned for Liknes couple who went missing with five-year-old grandson

BY CLARA HO, CALGARY HERALD SEPTEMBER 20, 2014 A memorial service will be held at the end of the month for a Calgary couple who went missing along with their young grandson in the summer.

Alvin and Kathy Liknes and five-year-old Nathan O’Brien were reported missing on June 30.

The Eden Brook Memorial Gardens and Funeral website lists the couple’s date of death as June 29.

While their bodies have not been found, police say the trio was killed and have charged Douglas Garland with three counts of murder.

Garland, 54, made a court appearance on Wednesday during which a two-week preliminary hearing was set for next May.

Police say Nathan was sleeping over at his grandparents’ Parkhill home, where an estate sale was held in preparation for the couple’s move to Edmonton and then to Mexico.

When Nathan’s mother went to pick him up the next day, no one was home.

Investigators said there was evidence of a violent incident in the residence.

For weeks, officers searched properties in Airdrie where Garland lived, looking for the bodies and evidence.

In an obituary, Alvin is remembered as an athlete, car-lover and “original thinker,” as well as a daredevil who learned how to fly planes, how to jump out of planes, and how to dive. He loved his family dearly.

“When he hugged his children they could feel his love and pride for them radiating like the sun,” the obituary read.

Kathy was a “fierce and watchful mother,” entrepreneur, chef, animal-lover, web and graphic designer, who was always there for her loved ones, from dog-sitting to child care to giving romantic advice.

“Her heart pinned firmly to her sleeve, Kathryn accepted people without prejudice or judgment.”

A memorial was held for Nathan earlier this month, during which attendees dressed up as superheroes in honour of the boy that his parents remembered as their superhero.

The celebration of life for the Likneses is scheduled to take place at First Alliance Church on Sept. 27 at 10 a.m.

I went to the Johnny Gosch website. Terrifying. Why did someone send her the photos? Aren't they risking that the photos might be used as evidence at a later date? Why would a professional kidnapper bother to taunt her?

She and others on her site think the authorities don't care about finding these kids, because they're covering up a child-trafficking ring. So why aren't the traffickers afraid to send her evidence? They seem to think they'll never be prosecuted, and none of the kids will ever be found. Considering the kids in the photos were presumably kept alive at least until they could be sold, why are they so sure nobody will ever tell on them?

I'm not saying she may not have some crazy theories, but she's been looking for her child for years. That doesn't mean some organization isn't responsible.

Tara Calico case in New Mexico in 1988. She was a 19 year old college student. She went on regular bike rides and never returned to her home in Belen, one afternoon. Only her Walkman and a cassette tape were found. The bike was never recovered. Different theories about her disappearance went around. There was a Polaroid of a bound and gagged young women and a boy that was found in Florida in 1989. Many believe that the young woman in the photo was Tara.

A few years back, the former sheriff of Valencia County said that Tara died as the result of some kind of car accident. Local boys were responsible and they covered up her death. The former sheriff claims he could never investigate or charge them without a body. Some people have disputed the story.

I remember that case. The 20th anniversary of her disappearance was this past June. There were a couple new leads on the case. One lead/theory is that a convicted serial rapist was involved because he was living in Mason City in 1995.

These cases, stuff like this always freaks me out. Ted Bundy, Jeffery Dahmer, etc. It freaked me out to read Dahmer killed and completely dismembered and crushed up the bones of his first victim 3 weeks after he graduated from High School, he then went and did a tour in the Army. Only later when he felt like admitting to this did they even discover the bone shards out behind his old house were he lived long before. That thought, that someone could stand beside you, work with you, do a military tour with you and bunk across the room from some one who had coldly murdered and disposed of another human being just completely freaks me the fuck out.

I have never heard of the Johnny Grosch case until this thread. I read the website about his case, his mother etc. and still am not clear if he's alive or dead. Its a story clouded with kidnap, child pedos and an alleged visit back home at some point. He would be in his 40's if alive but supposedly still living undercover. His story seems surrounded by conspiracy theories and his mother seems passionate yet unbalanced. I'm not faulting her, it just comes across that way.

What I still can't figure out is if he's alive or not. Is that the take away? Or is he alive and briefly surfaced to say he's hiding? Or is he thought to be dead? If he's alive as the mother thinks, why aren't her efforts on getting him back to her? Not to oversimplify, but Jaycee Dugard was taken and eventually made it back home and began to rebuild her life. If Johnny is alive, why is he still not home?

Can someone please summarize the status of the Johnny Grosch case as it currently stands?

384 “They are very afraid,” Amates said, apropos of nothing.

“Afraid?” I said. “Of what?”

“There was a tourist who died here,” he said. “An American tourist named—” and the name he said was garbled. I couldn’t understand it. This was news to me. In all I’d read, I’d never heard of an American tourist dying in Asmat.

“When?” I said. “What was his name?”

Amates’ English was slow, the words hard to comprehend no matter what he said. He said the name again, and then again, more slowly, and it was a hard name for an Asmat to pronounce, but this time it was unmistakable: “Michael Rockefeller.”

I had never told Amates that I was investigating Michael’s disappearance, only that I was a journalist writing about Asmat and its history. I had never so much as mentioned his name.

“Michael Rockefeller?” I asked, feigning ignorance.

“Yes, Michael Rockefeller,” Amates said. “He was an American. He was here in Otsjanep. They are very, very afraid. They do not want to talk about this.”

“How did his name come up?” I asked.

“They told me,” he said. “Today, when we were talking, they are afraid you are here to ask about Michael Rockefeller. And they are afraid.”

“Why?”

“Otsjanep killed him. Everyone knows it.”

The "Lost" colony of Roanoke is not a mystery. If you or your relatives are from that part of coastal NC, or have been there then you would know that the British colonists went to live with the native-Algonquins on Croatoan Island (now called Hatteras island), and then later the mainland of coastal NC.

There are people from that region of NC who look white, but genetically they have an Algonquin heritage, and some belong to the Lumbee tribe.

I followed the Bradyn Fuksa case for years after "Disappeared" chronicled his case. John Spira.

John Spira, a 45 year old Chicago man goes missing the day he finalizes his divorce in 2007. His ex-wife refuses to file a missing persona report until many family members and friends of Spira urge her to & then she finally does 2 days after he goes missing.

Last seen by his business partner at their office. Spira's truck found still parked at his office.

No clues found at all in his dissapearance except one large sheet of plastic comes up missing from his business.

Somewhere in the time frame of a year after he goes missing (I believe it was a year) his family puts a giant banner up w his picture asking for any information. The banner is destroyed that first night. A second banner is erected and then also destroyed the very next night.

Spira's business is burned down that second night as well. Police say cause of fire is unknown.

Then in 2010 Spira's ex-wife is found out to be deceased by Spira's family who claim the police investigating the disappearance were not even aware of this fact.

A note was found at the bus stop written by Annette saying, “Dad, momma came back. Give the boys a hug.” She, nor her mother, have ever been seen since. There’s suspicion that the husband/stepfather had something to do with their disappearances since he moved away and then gave up his two infant sons (Korrina’s sons/Annette’s half-brothers) to foster care not long after. He has since remarried and had other children. The whole thing is a real mystery.

There was an episode of Breaking Bad where the crew was out in the desert pulling some heist or whatever and some young boy on a bicycle stumbles on them. Jessie Plemons' character pulls a gun out of his pocket and shoots him, and then the body is buried out there in the middle of nowhere. This freaked me out. In one fell swoop, the boy was killed and then his family was destroyed. They will always wonder where he is and think he might be alive someplace. I have to think this happens a lot, where an abducted person is dead within minutes or hours, the body is disposed of and never found, and the parents go on TV fruitlessly begging for their child to be set free.

Someone briefly mentioned this upthread. There was a documentary several years back about an impostor who claimed to be the grown-up version of a missing boy. The family accepted him whole-heartedly, even though there were so many variances it begged belief. Well, the filmmakers were able to get the idea across that the family accepted the fake so readily because the missing boy had been killed, and having "him" show up alive would get them off the hook. Fascinating story.

There was a PBS mini-series decades ago called "Brat Farrar," which had a similar hook. Can't seem to find it online at all. Was done very well.

R473 People on reddit and other sites have claimed that the Degree family was abusive, so she wanted to leave home even though there was a bad storm. There's also the theory that Asha never left the house. That someone in the family murdered Asha, hid/buried her body, and put the backpack in a completely different location to throw off investigators.

The power went out and the family was awoken by the thunder and lightning from the storm, and who doesn't go and check on a young daughter or sister, when they hear her get out of bed, or does not notice them leaving the house-if she actually left.

The DB cooper story has trappings of a magic trick. My guess is that nobody actually saw him jump out and that he was able to hide until the plane landed at which point authorities were not looking for him on the plane. There was a movie recently that showed How certain panels can be removed in order to access other areas of the plane.

I’m fascinated by missing persons and love Disappeared and similar shows.

I saw a documentary on Johnny Gosch and I thought he was probably dead and that his mom was a bit nutty and either delusional or lying. I got the sense that losing her son had literally driven her insane.

I followed the Wetterling case until his body was found. Would love to know what happened to Jodie Huisentruit, Morgan Nick, Cherie Mahan, etc. I feel like we always assumed stranger abductions back in the ‘80s but now most abductions seem to be family, so I actually wonder if a lot of family members got away with murder. I think Huisentruit was killed by the older guy she was dating on and off.

by Anonymousreply 493June 25, 2018 1:48 AM

I always thought the Cherie Mahan was odd because she got off the bus at the bottom of her driveway but never made it into the house. no one said there was a car there so someone had to be hiding in the driveway to abduct her? I can't remember now if there was a lot of brush and trees on her driveway.

The Springfield Three is my #1 case. Such a strange and creepy story, and not a shred of evidence more than 25 years later. Bizarre.

by Anonymousreply 500June 25, 2018 3:18 AM

In my hometown, on Christmas Eve one year in the late 1970s, there was a young man who was driving his date home. He stopped to change a tire on one of the quietest roads in town. He was hit and killed by a hit and run.

It happens that the local jeweler in this small town was also the mayor, and drove the same model car as the suspect, and would take that very road to his home. He was suspected by there was never enough evidence to charge him.he lived under that suspicion for the next 30 years.

The boy’s mother made it her life’s work to try to find the driver, and made the jewler’s life miserable. They never caught the guy. He just disappeared.

The story even made 60 minutes, once.

by Anonymousreply 501June 25, 2018 3:39 AM

There was another theory a few years back that Huisentruit may have been killed by a serial rapist who live in that area around the time of her disappearance. But, I also think the older guy John Vansice killed her. Law enforcement had search warrants on him last year. If he's guilty and they can't find anything to get an arrest- it's a sad situation.

After all the publicity the Gosch case got, to go and kidnap another paper boy from the same area sounds crazy. Whoever took the second and third boy was either enjoying the attention or had a specific pattern he couldn't break. There were witnesses and yet the kidnapper stuck to his plan and was never caught. Gosch was probably not his first victim. I wonder if the kidnapper died or just moved his activity to another area.

As for the three women who vanished in Springfield, one of the women was scheduled to appear in court and testify. Maybe she was the main target. Whoever took the three women was calculated and careful not to leave anything behind. That doesn't sound like a crime of passion done by an angry drunk lover. The person/s also had experience in manipulating and scaring people into following orders without resistance. There is a bigger risk in kidnapping three women so it's possible it was the result of some immediate necessity, like an ongoing police investigation or a trial.

by Anonymousreply 510June 25, 2018 9:07 AM

Suzy and Stacy had changed their plans twice. They were supposed to stay at a hotel in Branson but decided to spend the night with a friend. However because it was graduation night the friend had relatives staying over and there was nowhere to sleep. So at the last minute the girls headed to Suzie's house.

by Anonymousreply 511June 25, 2018 4:32 PM

The Springfield Three case was not a random crime, it was premeditated and meticulously planned. Exactly how three adult women could be taken from a house with no sign of a struggle, and there was also no forced entry to the house, is just baffling. Lots of theories on various online forums dedicated to the case, but nobody really knows for sure. I think it had to be two people and not just one person who did this.

r500 I remember reading somewhere that regarding the three missing ladies from springfield, they happened to be buried under a highway (before) it was constructed. by Anonymousreply 533June 29, 2018 5:09 PM

I've never believed the hospital parking garage theory. Why would anyone dispose of three dead bodies at a hospital, of all places? Hospitals are heavy-traffic areas 24 hours a day, the risk of being seen would've been astronomical. Wherever the women were taken, it had to be some isolated place with total privacy.

After I watched that very good series "Missing" (first season), where the young English boy with his parents goes missing and the father never gets over the obsessive hunting for him, I remembered a piece I saw years ago with Barbara Walters on 20/20 where she interviewed the (English or maybe Australian) parents of a missing young boy who were traveling around the US (I think) in a VW camper van. I can't remember if this was in the '90s or the early 2000s. I remember the father was probably in his 60s with white hair and the mother was maybe 30s or 40s. They were sort of elderly hippies. I searched the 20/20 site and googled it and was never able to find the case. I think the name was similar to the name of the child in the show, which was "Oliver Hughes". Does anybody else remember this? I thought it was strange that I couldn't find it on the 20/20 website and I'm sure I didn't imagine it. I think the boy was quite young--maybe 4 years old. I just think it's so weird that I can't find anything about it.

by Anonymousreply 541June 29, 2018 9:36 PM

R541, you mean the episode went missing!?

by Anonymousreply 542June 29, 2018 9:42 PM

r542: Yes exactly! The 20/20 episode went missing. So I thought maybe the child was found or maybe it was a hoax or something by the parents. Why wouldn't it be listed in the show database--that seemed strange. I know I didn't imagine it--I have a clear image of the parents and the VW van and Baba Wawa interviewing them. The case of the missing episode.

The hospital and the parking garage were under construction during the time of disappearances. Some people have the theory that the women were murdered and the bodies were taken to the construction site during off hours and were buried there.

by Anonymousreply 544June 30, 2018 1:34 AM

by Anonymousreply 546December 9, 2018 8:36 PM

I had a close friend in college who "vanished" by probably faking his own death, and was featured on Unsolved Mysteries.

"His boat was found abandoned four miles off the shore of Huntington Beach, California, with his wallet and spatters of human blood on board. His car and boat trailer were found near the Huntington Beach dock. U.S. Marshals believe that he faked his own death, as he was due in court the very next day."

Very fun, larger than life guy. It always seemed like he was lying (like he was in Vietnam when he was 14 by lying about his age) but then it would turn out to be true.

R549 , no I didn't buy or use coke with my friend, although he was into it after I knew him. We smoked lots of pot, though. He had a scheme that involved university professors and grad students to smuggle hashish from the middle east in fake computers. I went to the meeting about who wanted to be involved, and my boyfriend and I said no way.

I have some pictures that he gave me for safekeeping, some were from trips that we took, and I wonder how to get in touch with his family. It's probably too much water under the bridge at this point. The '70's were such fun and crazy times, and it seemed like everyone was unconventional.

My dear, OP, here are my bullet points

- That waitress. Did she have to go to the Bermuda Triangle to fetch my refill? This joint ain't jumpin', honey and I'm guessing you kind of need the tips.

Here's a tip. Don't fuck the dishwasher. He's like some protected wildlife refuge for pubic lice.

My third husband. Seriously, vanished off the face of the earth. The F.B.I. was looking for him and everything.

He did have some history of mental illness. He's exactly the kind of guy who'd disappear for a decade and then comeback and kill everybody. His mother told me that on her deathbed. Poor Sylvia. Bald as a platter, but that mustache wouldn't die.

Well the last time we had lunch in public was at this very restaurant. She wore a LOT of concealer. And a hat with a veil. I mean she wasn't actually going to dine. By that time poor Sylvia couldn't keep down solids. Or liquids. Do you know she wore the same Madame Gres gown Alix designed specifically for her? It was for an engagement party that got cancelled way back in 1952. Some scandal was involved.

Oh the stories Sylvia had! I knew when I killed her I was really going to miss those stories.

And that is what I am going to do to the fucking waitress if she doesn't come back with my refill.

Obviously, not really. A planned murder is one thing, but once you start bouncing people off left and right, well, it's simply time to kill yourself.

Darling, do you think killing 13 people in the last two years is too much? I mean, I said I would stop at 13 total. But then it was thirteen a decade. And I've been whittling down the years since.

There are just too many things I want to buy! And I've got people inside all the insurance companies that have to get a cut. I could figure out another business plan, but who has the time these days?

Monique Daniels a teen missing since 1992 and it is obvious that her stepfather and/or her mother were involved in her dissapperance.

Wow that's a fucked up case, r584.

I don't know if this case was mentioned here but there's a potential update. Timmothy Pitzen went missing in 2011. His mom took him out of school after his dad had dropped him off. She later committed suicide in a hotel room and her suicide note claimed Timmothy was safe but the dad would never find him. A kid showed up today claiming to be Timmothy and saying he's been held captive by two men.

Always found this case creepy:

Gary Mathias, of Yuba City, California, is the only one of a group of five men who disappeared after buying junk food and snacks at a Chico market on the night of 24 February 1978 who has not been found. Their car was found several days later on a winding dirt road high in the Sierra Nevada; why they were there, well off their route home, and why they abandoned a car that was apparently in good working order, is not known. In June of that year the remains of three were found in the woods where they had died of exposure; a fourth was found in a trailer 20 miles (32 km) from the car where he had starved to death after suffering severe frostbite, despite the availability of food, heat and warmer clothing. Mathias, too, is believed to have made it to that trailer but left it at some point himself.[60]

Ambrose Bierce, but then again disappearing is an indulgence for those with a propensity to get lost.

r587 slightly less creepy when you learn all of the men were mentally challenged...

R574 I hope they can identify her, as well as this person.

Had a dream last night Hoffa was disposed of in a cemetery. Thrown in a hole with a casket of someone else lowered on top of him. And done!

R591, I have a theory that Shelley Miscavige is alive and in custody of the $cientos because she’s extremely mentally ill. Maybe schizophrenic? Since $cientos weren’t able to kill her with megavitamins and saunas (or whatever hogwash they replace psychiatric care with), they can’t very well have her roaming around unhinged.

by Anonymousreply 594April 9, 2019 6:27 PM

^^ they weren’t able to cure her

by Anonymousreply 595April 9, 2019 6:28 PM

R594 I would be unhinged too if I were married to David Miscavige. It's also worth noting that her mother died in 1985 from three gunshot wounds to the chest. They ruled it as a suicide because she also had cuts on the wrist, but whatever the truth is, that's pretty messed up.

Sadly I think she's been gone too long for your theory to be true. It's been 12 years. Other scientologists have said she's being held against her will at Church of Spiritual Technology but would she (in whatever condition) have survived for the past 12 years there? The fact that they don't even know for sure speaks volumes, and these were high level scientologists.

I have a bad feeling her body has been buried for many years now. She knew (and saw) too much. As soon as she asked her husband about his wedding ring (according to Mike Rinder) she was never seen again. The LAPD were very unforthcoming about their findings when Leah Remini asked them to investigate her disappearance. And they didn't even seem to investigate when someone first called in a missing persons report in 2011, two years before Leah did.

Anyone remember the case of Suzanne Lyall in Albany. Late 1990s. I don't think they ever found her.

by Anonymousreply 597April 9, 2019 7:10 PM

R596, that sounds about right. I didn’t realize how long it’s been. She’s probably dead and we will never know how she died or where she’s buried. Poor woman. I do think that’s why she went missing in the first place, though. They couldn’t have her visible, and they just did away with her. She was probably an example for the rest of the cult members...
