Carla Gugino *is* Vivien Leigh

Carla Gugino has been tapped to play Hollywood screen legend Vivien Leigh in the forthcoming biopic “The Florist.”

The film is directed by Nick Sandow (star of “Orange is the New Black”) and will explore Leigh’s struggle with bipolar disorder in the 1960s, as she prepares to lead the Broadway production of John Gielgud’s Chekhov adaptation of “Ivanov.”

She almost looks similar but she doesn’t have the magnetic quality and charm.

by Anonymousreply 1May 2, 2024 11:46 PM

Agreed. She doesn’t have that Hollywood glamour aspect.

by Anonymousreply 2May 4, 2024 3:41 AM

She couldn't do worse than Julia Ormond in MY WEEK WITH MARILYN.

God, that was dreadful!

by Anonymousreply 3May 4, 2024 3:49 AM

I love Carla Gugino!

by Anonymousreply 4May 4, 2024 3:58 AM

Is she a spic?

by Anonymousreply 5May 4, 2024 3:59 AM

A very jealous Taraji posting at R5

by Anonymousreply 6May 4, 2024 4:04 AM

I think Carla Gugino is extremely glamorous and charming. I'm looking forward to this.

by Anonymousreply 7May 4, 2024 4:51 AM

If she sings “cookie time” then the movie will be a smash!

by Anonymousreply 8May 4, 2024 7:25 AM

I think she has mystery and exudes a bit of danger. Watch her in a Mike Flannagan production. If the project has the right director she'll turn a compelling performance. Vivian Lee was NUTS.

Carla is the right age.

by Anonymousreply 10May 4, 2024 9:29 AM

Viola Davis was busy.

^Shut up, baldy.

by Anonymousreply 14May 4, 2024 11:13 AM

(oops, wrong thread.)

by Anonymousreply 15May 4, 2024 11:14 AM

I look forward to seeing photos of her in costume, hair and makeup.

by Anonymousreply 16May 4, 2024 11:16 AM

I really like Carla Gugino but I'm not interested in seeing something about Vivien Leigh and I don't think I'm alone in this.

by Anonymousreply 17May 4, 2024 11:24 AM

[quote]I'm not interested in seeing something about Vivien Leigh

Why is that?

by Anonymousreply 18May 4, 2024 11:36 AM

You’re not alone, r17.

Between David Niven’s autobiography where he writes of Leigh’s psychotic episodes ( he doesn’t name who he is writing about but years ago somebody here at the good old DL identified her as his subject) I know enough about Leigh’s mental and emotional fractures.

Add in her superb performance as Blanche Dubois and the combination I describe here is more than I need to know.

by Anonymousreply 19May 4, 2024 11:52 AM

R17 = Joan Plowright

by Anonymousreply 20May 4, 2024 11:54 AM

She does look like her.

I look forward to this. Have there been movies about bipolar disorder? Cannot name any off the top of my head right now. The challenge could be not to overact the manic phase. It's easy to just play it as over-caffeinated.

by Anonymousreply 22May 4, 2024 12:42 PM

This seems like a good casting choice.

by Anonymousreply 23May 4, 2024 2:24 PM

I was under the impression (from a biography) that by 1966 Vivien was on Lithium and that her bipolar tendencies weren't still manifesting themselves (at least not as much).

R19 In Stewart Granger's autobiography (Sparks Fly Upward) he has a chapter about him and Niven going to the house Leigh was staying in in LA and trying to help her when she was having one of her episodes.

by Anonymousreply 24May 4, 2024 2:27 PM

She is 👁talian.

by Anonymousreply 25May 4, 2024 4:20 PM

Yup, r24.

It' been decades since I read Niven's book (I think he wrote two memoirs) but he did say he was accompanied by another famous actor. I can't remember if he identified the actor but I'll take Granger's, and your word for it.

I do remember Niven wrote about how Leigh's face was breathtakingly beautiful was and that when she on her best behavior, she was captivating.

Why does everyone named Vivian have mental problems?

by Anonymousreply 28May 4, 2024 6:28 PM

Vivian Vance didn't!

by Anonymousreply 29May 4, 2024 8:33 PM

Vivien did. Vivian didn't.

by Anonymousreply 30May 5, 2024 12:04 AM

Vivian Vance did have mental problems. She regularly saw a psychiatrist and she stuck with Phil Ober even though he abused her.

by Anonymousreply 31May 5, 2024 2:09 AM

I was not named VIVIAN!

by Anonymousreply 32May 5, 2024 12:43 PM

Fun fact: her father was Bruce Leigh.
