Hank Cheyne- Lawyer turned Model turned Soap Star & a Vintage Beefcake

Henry Edward Garcia (Hank Cheyne) was born on August 13, 1958 in Santa Maria, California. He is of German and Dutch descent on his mothers side and Native American, Spanish and Mexican descent on his fathers side. He was raised in a Roman Catholic household and went to a parochial middle school and high school. After high school he went to Santa Clara University where he played Varsity baseball and graduated with a BSC in Business. After that he attended UCLA Law School where he received his Juris Doctor degree.

While in Law School he was approached by photographer Steven Arnold, who took notice of the handsome young man and asked to photograph him. He agreed. After this a friend of his recommended he get into acting because of his good looks and presence, and recommended him to an acting coach. He began taking acting lessons and the coach, Vincent Chase, told him he should go to an open casting for a big feature editorial in GQ Magazine. Hank went and the photographer doing the casting was Bruce Weber, who cast Hank almost immediately (photo taken can be seen below). Weber took such a liking to him and his striking beauty that he continued working with him, featuring Hank in magazines such as British Vogue, Italian Vogue, in an editorial in Las Vegas with Christie Brinkley, and for a major Gianni Versace campaign. After Weber he went on to shoot with acclaimed photographers Herb Ritts, Mathew Rolston, and Fabrizio Gianni among others.

He juggled being a model while also attending Law School for a few years before graduating and passing the California Bar Exam. He almost immediately was offered a full time offer from a Beverly Hills law firm. Before committing and needing a break from seven straight years of college and grad school, he asked for and received a deferment with an open offer to return to practice law. Following commercial and print work he moved to Europe, traveling extensively, eventually living in Italy and then later Tokyo, Japan, before returning to the U.S. where he committed to pursuing a career as an actor after being discovered by another acting coach while living in Milan.

In 1986 he was cast in Another World as Scott Love/Lasalle in NYC. However, when his two year contract was over he decided against renewing it as he wants to move back to California. After moving back to California he did small parts in B flicks, tv commercials and guest spots on some shows, and continued this for years.

1996 he co-founded a theater company on Hollywood Theater Row and starred in the world premiere of Steve Monroe's 'A Kind Man and A Good Lover' in the role of Frank Mackie, for which he received a Los Angeles Ovation Award Nomination. That same year Aaron Spelling met him and cast him as Detective Ricardo Torres on Sunset Beach, which would premiere in 1997. The soap ran for 3 years but was a cult hit in the UK and big hit in places like Russia and Poland.

In the early 00s he gained a passion for art and began painting, even getting a studio space in LA to do so, and Gallery representation on Melrose Ave.

In 2006 he returned to acting in a show called “Saints & Sinners”, which ran for 62 episodes. In 2009/2010 he had a recurring role as Austin Buttercup in HBO’s Big Love. After that he had big guest starring roles on Sons of Anarchy and Criminal Minds. In 2014 he was cast in a recurring role for Longmire and cast in an episode of The Morning Show in 2019.

Sunset Beach, a true blast from the past. I remember a pictorial of 4 of the guys from that show sitting on a cliff or mountain tastefully nude.

He's very creepy looking. Looks like the Hillside Strangler in most of those pictures.

by Anonymousreply 16April 28, 2024 7:11 PM

I don’t find him creepy. He looks gorgeous but had that intensity in his eyes many male models would do.

With that said, where can I rewatch Sunset Beach?

R18 fun fact about that ad- he was actually just sitting down while smoking a cigarette and he was studying for his bar exam while waiting for Bruce Weber to get ready when Weber told him “please don’t move”, so he stayed like that and Weber took the shot, and it was the one used for the campaign.

by Anonymousreply 31April 28, 2024 8:37 PM

R30 you’re assuming? Did you stop and read? R23 is a full blown retard who I just sent a new email to Muriel about. He has no behavior and is a grown man with no education or life skills. He relies on family members to take care of him. If you aren’t one of his alts there is not excuse for you to not understand what r20 wrote.

by Anonymousreply 32April 28, 2024 8:38 PM

He was one of the main characters for 2 years r31….

by Anonymousreply 33April 28, 2024 8:38 PM

What r20 wrote…

“ fun fact about that ad- he was actually just sitting down while smoking a cigarette and he was studying for his bar exam while waiting for Bruce Weber to get ready when Weber told him “please don’t move”, so he stayed like that and Weber took the shot, and it was the one used for the campaign.”

“WHILE WAITING FOR BRUCE WEBER TO GET READY” implies he was waiting for Bruce Weber to set up so they could do the photo shoot.

If you don’t know what implying something is…

im·pli·ca·tion

noun

1. the conclusion that can be drawn from something although it is not explicitly stated.

"the implication is that no one person at the bank is responsible"

by Anonymousreply 39April 28, 2024 9:16 PM

How is that relevant?

by Anonymousreply 40April 28, 2024 9:17 PM

In his younger pix, he looks like Lorenzo Lamas.

by Anonymousreply 41April 28, 2024 9:23 PM

R39 you didn’t look at him and know he’s Hispanic? Seriously?

by Anonymousreply 42April 28, 2024 9:25 PM

He was the main reason I started watching Another World. Well, him and Richard Burgi. I think they both spent at least one summer in Speedos.

by Anonymousreply 43April 28, 2024 9:25 PM

He is just as sexy now as he was then. Damn.

by Anonymousreply 44April 28, 2024 9:26 PM

Not to be rude, but this very much looks like a Hispanic man. When he got older he looked less “ethnic”, however.

by Anonymousreply 48April 28, 2024 9:32 PM

Anyway, question regarding Eddie Cibrian on Sunset Beach.

When did he join that cast? Because I was only 10 or 11 when that soap started and would watch it when i was home sick or during summer and always remembered him being there. I guess when I watched he had already joined and I he was always the one thing I remember from that show besides the young pretty actress who played his love interest. When did he join?

When you look at many cast pics (even cast pics with the full cast) he isn’t in them. I was shocked while seeing this.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 49April 28, 2024 9:35 PM

He has soap actor looks.

by Anonymousreply 50April 28, 2024 9:38 PM

The original Cole was played by George Hamilton's son Ashley. He was replaced with Cibrian after a few weeks. That is why Cibrian wasn't in any of the early promo shots and posters.

by Anonymousreply 51April 28, 2024 9:38 PM

R51 oh. Thank you! I never knew that!!! Him as Cole is the one thing I genuinely remember about this show because I was young and he gave me feelings I didn’t understand. In a good way and bad way.

I also remember the show doing crazy storylines, like terror island where there was a killer on the island they were trapped on, or the tsunami while some of them were on a cruise, or the big earthquake (which is what caused the tsunami) etc.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 52April 28, 2024 9:44 PM

R43 I was too young to see him in Another World but I did like Detective Ricardo in Sunset Beach. He was handsome and a good guy.

My mother hated that soap but still watched it 😂 and then would complain about it.

by Anonymousreply 53April 28, 2024 9:54 PM

Ignore the asshole, VB. I love your threads.

by Anonymousreply 54April 28, 2024 9:55 PM

I love them too, VB.

I vaguely remember him from AW but by then I didn't have much time for soaps. I remember him tossing autumn leaves in the opening credits.

Beautiful man. I think he did Playgirl.

Mind your manners, and you'll keep your friends. The OP was obviously raised right. He delivers.

Those younger images of Cheyne are exquisite. Beautiful body with just the right amount of muscles. His Spanish heritage is very apparent in his face. He looks like he could have just come from the bull fighting ring.

by Anonymousreply 58April 28, 2024 10:06 PM

^ you’d make for a terrible cocktease. That is all.

by Anonymousreply 59April 28, 2024 10:09 PM

VBC, you're on a great roll these days. Never heard of this man, but he's beautiful and, let's face it, brains never hurt, either. (UCLA Law has always been top flight, and from what I have heard, the California bar exam is the toughest in the country except for NY.)

by Anonymousreply 60April 28, 2024 10:11 PM

You have to hand it to Bruce Weber, his pictures are the best.

by Anonymousreply 61April 28, 2024 10:12 PM

Sunset Beach had a very attractive cast.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 62April 28, 2024 10:23 PM

R61 because he has an eye for male beauty. He was given the ability to cast the models for his own photoshoots by magazines or designers because they trusted him and his eye for male beauty. There is a reason he cast Cheyne for that GQ editorial immediately after meeting him, and then cast him in numerous others as well.

by Anonymousreply 63April 28, 2024 10:25 PM

R62 yes. Because they were trying to modernize soaps a bit and bring in younger adults, who with each generation are less likely to watch daytime soaps. That was part of why it didn’t last long though. The people who did tend to like it were in school or young adults working. It was not the elder women or housewives really watching it.

Then Passions came out and NBC leaned fully into the teen soap thing. It was bizarre.

by Anonymousreply 64April 28, 2024 10:27 PM

Ok, I remembered correctly. They did do a primetime special to try and bring in new viewers to the daytime episodes. The earthquake/tsunami storyline was a big hit for them during the summer of 1998 and the ratings skyrocketed that summer.

Sad they couldn’t hold onto it.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 65April 28, 2024 10:32 PM

R62 that was the opening credits for season 1. Seasons 2 and 3 changed it entirely, and didn’t even show the actors names anymore, which was stupid to me.

by Anonymousreply 66April 28, 2024 10:55 PM

He looks way more hispanic than Eddie Cibrian - although on this one, I freely admit that I'm not a good judge because Cibrian looks ethnically like Dean Cain who has one Japanese grandparent.

by Anonymousreply 67April 28, 2024 11:04 PM

Do we have nudes? Does he have a pert posterior? Inquiring minds must know.

by Anonymousreply 68April 28, 2024 11:23 PM

R60 it’s only the third best law school in CA…back then it was a close 4th.

by Anonymousreply 69April 29, 2024 1:17 AM

The Calif. bar exam was notorious because it was the only three day exam in the country (now it is down to 2 days), and it’s pass rate was lower (= higher cut score) because non-ABA approved law school grads could sit for the exam.

The NY exam covered more ground on the essay portion, but it had a lower cut score…

by Anonymousreply 70April 29, 2024 1:24 AM

by Anonymousreply 71April 29, 2024 1:26 AM

[quote]I had zero idea that Hank Cheyne wasn't his real name or that he's Hispanic.

Interesting ... today he'd use the Hispanic surname (even if it was his mother's maiden name or something from the past) in order to increase his employability.

by Anonymousreply 72April 29, 2024 1:28 AM

The Hispanic surname is from his father. His legal name is Henry Edward Garcia. He made a stage name. The first name I’m not sure about but Cheyne is based off of Cheyenne, Wyoming, where some of his past Native American family members come from.

Cheyne was in the Playgirl July '87 issue, but his was a celebrity portfolio with no nudity. Lots of chest shots.

Given Bruce Weber was a master at getting guys to go full-frontal for his camera, it wouldn't surprise me if full-frontal nudes of Cheyne do exist, whether in his own possession or locked in Weber's photograph archive.

He didn’t do Playgirl. No one of worth was doing in the fucking 80s on. It was straight and mostly gay porn stars in that magazine in the 80s. The 70s was when they could get a washed up star to do it, and because they almost never did frontal nudity and if they did it was soft. Playgirl didn’t show their first hard dick until 1980.

People did interviews etc. for them but not nude photos.
