Things I Don't Understand Politically and the Questions I Have...

I don't understand why there hasn't been some sort of public interest program where women (who have been adversely affected by these ant-abortion laws) tell their stories to a panel of "pro" anti- abortion individuals who wili then be asked to respond to these women.

Sadly, a professional wrestling grudge match would be a more productive forum.

OMS!

by Anonymousreply 2April 24, 2024 5:51 PM

Even if that is pay for view count me in. I have always thought what we need is a tv show where people will throw bad abortion stories back and forth demanding responses. I’d be glued to the tv

Would be better than shogun and I like shogun.

I'm currently listening to and watching (more listening though) to this channel on YouTube titled "Life Stories". I am currently listening to numerous and various scholar historians speak about Abraham Lincoln and slavery. Just excellent, EXCELLENT, presentations!!! My question is where were/are these historians whenever the "stupidness" and inaccuracies arise about the issue(s) surrounding slavery? Why must we continually be subjected to the stupidness and inaccuracies rather than settle for the truth once and for all?

Why can't we see and be exposed to more camaraderie like this

I have a political question of my own. Why did the founding fathers come up with the electoral college? It has been nothing but a weapon used by the GQP to stay in minority power. Now because of it we have a Supreme Court full of religious freaks who are trying to take the country back 100 years. Minority rule is extremely dangerous, and anti-democratic, as we are finding out.

[quote]I have a political question of my own. Why did the founding fathers come up with the electoral college?

I believe that it was specifically created so that the "landed gentry" could always have a method of overriding the will of the people. I guess if the people voted for a socialist government, then it would be the "landed gentry" who would/could save democracy?

The country is split fairly evenly politically. No side dominates in numbers,

Lefty , Lean Left , Lean Right , Righty

And usually every few years we get a change of party in charge of the house, senate, and the WH. That’s not dominating anything.

And why we have the EC is not as important as the fact that we will always have it. Learn to win and play with the rules you have not those you will never have.

by Anonymousreply 8April 24, 2024 6:37 PM

R8 I think the Repukes need to learn that lesson. And their gerrymandering needs to be stopped. Like, yesterday. But that's the only way they can win. And you are wrong. Most of the country is liberal, which is why a Repuke POTUS rarely wins the popular vote. Three million more people wanted Hillary elected. That's a lot of people. Take your reich wing bullshit and fuck off.

I would think that this is message that many Republicans need to hear and learn.

by Anonymousreply 10April 24, 2024 7:00 PM

R9 kind of a nasty young fuck. 2020 gallup

30% Dems

29% GOP

39% Non aligned independents.

This is why the Dems don’t dominate every year and every election.

by Anonymousreply 11April 24, 2024 7:07 PM

r11 - when polled on individual topics (abortion, gay rights, housing assistance, public education, student loan forgiveness or free public education, labor rights, and a host of other "issues") the country routinely polls 60-70% in favor of the liberal solutions to those issues. The fact that this doesn't translate into identifying these issues as Democratic is due to a huge messaging problem, not to some supposed "split" in the electorate.

To listen to right wing media is to get some notion of Democrats as only being interested in fringe social issues, not as a party that has a very long history of reforming the economic system, making taxes fairer, trying to level the playing field for the economically disadvantaged, and sadly, I read those same topic points on DL all the time.

But money also rules. In my district, the incumbent right-wing representative has always had a huge cash advantage, given the lack of campaign finance rules, and she has parlayed that for years into a juggernaut of television advertising that can never be matched by any Democratic candidate. She is retiring this year, but the money advantage remains, so we'll see what happens this next election.

Is that true? Or do we have to think of alternative strategies, methods and/or work harder to overcome and beat money?

by Anonymousreply 14April 25, 2024 12:02 AM

People are told that they can vote, then they vote, but are arrested and jailed because they are then told that they were NOT eligible to vote and that the information told to them was in error. However, they are still arrested and jailed.

People (usually white and Republican) attempt to overturn an election and/or overthrow the government and...

R11 if the EC was abolished, there would never be another Republican president. And the GQP knows it.

[quote][R11] if the EC was abolished, there would never be another Republican president. And the GQP knows it.

Well, how did it happen the last time?

I'm not a supporter of the EC but on some level I do understand its existence. IMHO, it really needs to be modified/updated/whatever. I specifically remember that an EC voter said that he would NOT vote for Hillary Clinton even though his State overwhelmingly supported Clinton. And this was legal...

But, let's say that the population overwhelmingly voted for someone like Hitler. Should there be no recourse?

by Anonymousreply 17April 25, 2024 1:39 AM

The founding fatherswere not tic tok junkies like the polititions of today are.

by Anonymousreply 18April 25, 2024 2:34 AM

It is the winner-take-all aspect of the EC that renders it so unfair because of the Republican strategy of pouring their resources into sparsely populated rural states which have an EC advantage. . If all states would agree to apportion their EC delegates to vote in proportion to the votes that each candidate received within their states, problem solved. For example, state A has 5 electors.. 60 % of the votes went to presidential candidate R and 40% to Presidential candidate D. In my solution (which is, by the way, strongly advocated by quite a few people), 3 of those electors would vote for presidential candidate R and 2 would vote for Presidential candidate D. A few states already use this method - I believe Maine and Nebraska, for instance.

by Anonymousreply 19April 25, 2024 7:26 AM

Yes if we did not have the EC our elections would be different. If water was not wet swimming would he different.

Both arguments are true and equally important to discuss. And both are equally likely to change in the future..

I don't understand Hachette Group Publishing's thinking in releasing the story about Kristi Noem murdering her 14-month-old dog. Whose idea was that? I offer the following suggestion for people to consider...

DON'T BUY THE BOOK!

Instead take that money (List Price: $30 but via Amazon $23.59) and donate it to a local animal shelter.I'm surprised that animal shelters are not already promoting such an idea. I would post this on the Amazon customer review section but at this time you can't post anything.

I also feel that bookstores should not order this book selection or cancel the order and notify customers that it can be speially ordered. If she is booked to do a book tour then venues should cancel the booking.

Finally... Should the people below who reviewd this book be held accountable for the contents of it?

"Governor Kristi Noem is a tremendous leader, one of the best. This book, it's a winner. It exposes the problems we're facing and lays out a fantastic plan to make America great again. You've got to read it!"―Donald J. Trump, 45th President of the United States

"During Covid, Kristi Noem proved she was the Governor with the best instincts. This book is grounded in that same common sense and fearless fight for freedom. It’s the reminder we need in these dark days to never lose hope in America. Get ready to be inspired!"―Rachel Campos-Duffy, mom of nine and co-host of FOX & Friends Weekend

"An eye-opening message that will surprise and energize patriotic Americans. Those who've been paying attention know she’s the real deal. All elected officials need to pay attention to every word from this forward-thinking leader."―James Golden (aka Bo Snerdley), radio host, podcaster, bestselling author, and former right-hand man to Rush Limbaugh

"In addition to fascinating insights on the inner workings of government, this book will make you bolder! Exactly what America needs."―Chaya Raichik, Creator @LibsOfTikTok

"Kristi Noem isn't afraid to challenge the status quo, and neither should we be. This book is the perfect blueprint for young Americans on how to move our nation forward and restore greatness in our country. The time is now."―Riley Gaines, Athlete, Advocate, Woman
