Forrest Millard- a pioneer and true Vintage Beefcake (known as the First Beefcake Model)

He is another vintage beefcake I worried about speaking about due to circumstances but he is a part of the history so I will.

Forrester Wayne Dorlac was born on August 28, 1929 in Bernalillo County, New Mexico. When he was a child his family moved to Missouri, where they would live until he was a teen. During WWII his family decided to leave Missouri and moved to Los Angeles, California. He was an athletic youth and taking gymnastics. He also loved to workout. It was 1946 and he was 16 years old and loved to go to Muscle Beach to workout with all the other gym bros of the time (who were almost always older than him) and learn from them on how they workout etc. While he was working out one day he began noticing that men who don’t even work out(who he assumed were “queer”) would show up to watch him working out. As the days went by, more and more gay men came to watch this teenage Adonis workout, and he began generating small crowds. Forrester was confused by it at first but ended up liking the feeling of being admired and adored. Word of mouth got to Bob Mizer, who decided to come down to Muscle Beach and see this teenage beauty for himself.

Bob Mizer went down to Muscle Beach and saw Forrester with his own eyes, and immediately approached him despite finding him to be short. He let Forrester know he is a professional photographer who photographs buff models to show off their muscles for his magazine to motivate other men to workout more and give tips. He then asked Forrester if he wanted to come back to his mother’s place and see some of his work and Forrester obliged. While at his mother’s he showed Forrester some of his work and then asked if he wanted to become one of his models, as he had the perfect build to be a top physique model and buttered him up with endless praise and adoration. Forrester said yes then Mizer went and got a jockstrap and told him to put it on, that he would be recreating poses of a classical Greek statue. He did his first photoshoot on the spot at 16. After taking the photos Mizer realized he just took photos of a minor and decided to give Forrester the stage name Forrest Millard. Forrest became the very first catalogued model for pioneering photographer Bob Mizer's Athletic Model Guild (AMG) after that photoshoot, sadly at just 16 years old. Some nudes were taken as well and Bob sold the photos by mail order through his company, the Athletic Model Guild, and, beginning in 1951, Physique Pictorial, the first magazine aimed at a gay male audience (although it claimed to be for fitness enthusiasts, being a gay magazine under the guise of a fitness magazine).

Forrest did 15 more photoshoots for Mizer over the course of 14 years and posed for numerous other magazines and photographers as well.

Forrest worked with Mizer exclusively until 1954 when he decided to branch out and did a photoshoot with Irv Johnson for “Tomorrows Man” becoming the new face of the Table of Contents in late 1954 (taking over that spot from 16 year old Glenn Bishop).

In 1958 Forrester did a few shoots with another model to create homoerotic images to sell. Those images would keep being reprinted in numerous magazines throughout the 1960s, even after Forrest retired.

In 1960 Forrest retired from modeling and left LA. He moved to Washington and met a woman and got married in the late 70s. Unlike some other beefcake models, he was never ashamed of his past and even did an interview in 2009. During this interview he learned that many gay men over the years loved him. Surprised that he was still remembered by some, he was gratified that he’d impacted gay culture and helped countless men on their journey to coming out.

He died in 2011 of supposed heart failure. His wife of over 30 years by that point was with him the entire time.

Blowups of his photos still get sold on websites like Artsy. And people buy them. This one sold, a photo of his naked backside from 1947 when he was 17.

It’s disturbing how predatory those photographers were. It’s even more disturbing how many gay men have always turned a blind eye to that.

Definitely handsome and fit. He was only 5’7. A tiny thing.

Oy the feet at r10. Did he walk barefoot from Arkansas?

by Anonymousreply 25April 23, 2024 9:46 PM

He was probably walking around the studio barefoot.

by Anonymousreply 26April 23, 2024 10:30 PM

Imagine a photographer trying that today. The internet keeps them from being able to.
