Britney Spears was a decent if nasally and twangy singer when young and just needed more professional training to improve her juvenile technique. Perhaps learning to sing from her chest and with gravitas rather than the shrieking and poor attempts at belting and running she did as a kid. But under the record label pressure, she adapted this baby doll voice which destroyed her thin and undeveloped voice very early on and she never sought to correct that because it was her trademark and made her stand out.

It's just vocal acrobatics, I've always hated that style of "singing". I also hate that it's become a benchmark for vocal prowess in the US and then exported to the rest of the world thanks to those singing talent shows. That's been changing recently, but a lot of the damage has been done because people are now trained like dogs to perk up at vocal runs. And it's not just Aguilera, I blame Whitney as well.

But Whitney at least could produce resonant and supported belts unlike Xtina who just scream strained strains

Christina had an amazing voice that when she was starting out she used in a variety of ways. After a time she settled into the her sound blast way of singing and was actually taking away the best parts of her talent. She ruined her own career because she was too full of herself to listen to anyone.

She’s got a great voice, but she oversings. And when she went hyper sexual with her image and music, I felt ashamed for her. Mariah did it too.

I agree she has the voice but the way she uses it is horrible. It's like an assault on our ears. No passion in her vocals. No sense of interpreting the lyrics.

OP has a point but it's just an argument. Christina Aguilera CAN sing but she chooses not to and also she has very little if ANY musicality. She is a singing star who seems to have close to ZERO creative taste. And no creativity. Or let's say, bad taste. She has low taste and what she has is bad.

Christina suffers from child star-induced narcissism. She was hyped up since her Disney days and thus never felt the need to improve or challenge herself. Her first album was actually great because the producers told her to tone down the yelling a notch and sound more like a vulnerable teen girl rather than an OTP diva who wants to do vocal gymnastics. Of course, Christina blamed her producers and then once she got creative control, she just did whatever she wanted and made bloated and self-indulgent albums. Xtina decided to limit her annoying falsetto and just belt up to A5. Bionic(2010) unironically the biggest flop yet I think its her best album Lotus(2012) completly have no idea Liberation(2018) another commercial flop.

Aguilera’s voice has a brassy quality that lacks soul. There is no smoke or grit in her timbre, but it’s also not pure. She is a very competent yeller, and she sounds to me like she is always trying. Katy Perry is even worse that way but is campy and fun at least. Aguilera is camp actually, with the hand waving and platinum hair and terrible clothes, it’s just not fun.

Mylie Cyrus is a Disney pop princess with some soul. She can be unbelievably good. Demi Lovato is a quality power belter and makes it look and sound effortless without the showboating like Aguilera.

I once saw a documentary about Britney. Her family and early childhood friends talked about her extraordinary talent, being “blessed by god from an early age” with amazing vocal ability. That was surprising to me because, while she has a very serviceable doll baby/ sexy squeaky/ not-a-girl- not-yet- a- whatever voice suited to her pop, I would not call it an extraordinary instrument. Her managers and producers really stamped out whatever she once possessed.

She can't belt above Eb5 since 2018. He barely would be able to hit F5 in her prime tho.

I find Christina fascinating because she was a child prodigy and when she was younger had such potential. But she is, or at least was, a very angry person and she seemed to only want to use her voice in an angry way.

I saw a clip of her singing when she was teenager. She was just doing endless runs that consisted of screeching and warbling. It was like she was throwing a singing tantrum. It was just really weird.

That whole Stripped era was weird too. She’d be raked over the coals if she was trying to pull that today. The fake accent and the fake dark tan? Immediately canceled. Christina shares a complete lack of artistry with Jessica Simpson. Both have more than passable voices, but no idea how to use it. I remember JS complaining about her management telling her that her vocals were 'not accessible enough' without being self-aware enough to realize they were trying to tell her: "Just sing the stupid notes and let the song have a melody bitch!"

And yes, it's Whitney's fault, indirectly. They're all trying to copy what they heard her do, but for all her ornamentation, Whitney rarely lost the melody or chose runs/crap that clash with the actual song. (She did sometimes, though. And Mariah did it more often, though some of that was to disguise her failing voice.)

Jessica had power in her voice which put her above Mandy and Britney who had thin voices but Jessica had zero technique. You can tell her album Bionic must have been a struggle between what she wanted to do and what her producers wanted her to do. It’s a very inconsistent album. If she’d have stuck to the more electronic notes of songs like Bionic and pared down the vocals - and cut the number of tracks down to about 10 - it probably would have been a much more commercially successful album. It certainly would have been one where she maybe evolved her sound or style a bit better, insofar as what music was popular in 2010. That album always makes me think what her ego must be like.

Britney and Christina both suffered from singing in registers that didn't suit them.

Britney was forced to sing in a higher register than she should have, in order to fit the idea of a Bubblegum Pop Pincess. She sounds much better when she's singing lower. Christina insisted on singing in a low register, when it's her higher register that sounds better.

Christina seemed to always have an attitude problem that made her come across as unlikable. I imagine most of that stemmed from having to play second fiddle to Britney, and never quite measuring up. That had to eat her up as she probably believes she's infinitely more talented than Britney, and has a chip on her shoulders about not getting the respect she deserves.

The thing is, Christina would probably most likely not have had a career had it not been for Britney. Sure she would have had a song or two, but she probably would not have lasted as long as she did without Britney having been the top of the pack.

Fergie sounded more emotional and better in "Big Girls Don't Cry" than Xtina's "Beautiful"

Fergie is a druggie but it's possible she may be a better singer than Xtina. She was on a variety show called Kids Incorporated when young and sang on it and sounded good. She was in a girl group called Wild Orchid and sounded good then.

Fergie may be an untapped talent but her drug abuse and Black Eyed Peas association made it hard to take her seriously.

And one other thing re Britney and Christina... at least Britney had a sense of humor about herself and seemed likeable. Christina would get offended at every single thing. One instance is when Sarah Michelle Gellar did a parody of Christina's Dirty video on SNL. Christina took major issue with it and bitched and moaned about it for years.

Oddly, I can't find a clip of that skit anywhere. It seems to have been scrubbed.

I am beginning to believe R&B died in the early 90s just like rock music did, the music industry got so lazy and greedy especially once Clear Channel bought out all the radio stations. MTV stopped showing a lot of music videos and brought the TV payola TRL on the forefront, pushing corporate creations over trained and authentic musicians. Real artists can be moody and temperamental, very controlling and difficult. Prince, George Michael, Nirvana, Fiona Apple and many others were fighting with their labels. It's no coincidence near the end of the 20th century, overly manufactured artists started filling up spots that aged legends used to occupy. Ageism became more and more overt. In the mid-2000s, American Idol attempted to challenge this by having a national talent contest but apart from Kelly Clarkson, most of the winners weren't that successful in getting on the charts.

American Idol should have just ended after Season 1. They never got, nor will they ever get, a better talent than what they got out of Kelly Clarkson.

She seemed like a harmless bimbo but people didn't like her sexualized image that was being sold to little girls (repeat the same thing with Miley Cyrus). Frankly, I credit him w/better taste, R144. The feud supposedly started in the early 2000s, when Aguilera made fun of Osbourne for being overweight. She is famous for having 4 octave vocal range but if we exclude all exclamations/fry notes her range is B2-G#6 which still impressive but not 4 octaves.

Low notes: Aguilera has decent lower register for mezzo with no technique; she can support down to E3 and her notes down to C3 have decent projection. Probably result of excessive drinking.

Belting: because Aguilera has no mix she uses pure chest voice to hit notes in 4th and 5th octave; above G4 her voice become tense because she bring all the weight up. Above C5 her notes are basically screaming; because of this fact she never was able to replicate high belts in her live performances like E5 from Fighter F#5 and G5 from Beautiful F#5 from The voice within. Her belting technique was the best during B2B era, she had many decent E5s both studio and live. After Bionic she stopped giving a fuck about singing.

Falsetto/head voice: Aguilera has really well developed falsetto; its strongest part of her voice; she can hit notes up to A6/Bb6 live and she is really comfortable singing runs up to G6( What a girl wants).

If Aguilera gave a fuck about technique she could develop into soprano sfogato and had really consistent G6-C7 notes.
