“Iconic”

Is anybody else getting tired of seeing this word used to describe practically everything entertainment-related these days?

by Anonymousreply 19May 19, 2024 5:27 AM

it's a running joke on this show smiling friends, they refer to some mundane thing as iconic in every episode.

by Anonymousreply 1May 15, 2024 9:46 PM

It's not a recent thing. Iconic has been overused and abused for over a decade now. It's been a joke for a long time.

by Anonymousreply 2May 15, 2024 10:25 PM

R2 has it right. It was fucking tired many years ago. Say it to me once, and I'll wince. Say it with "impactful," and I will go home and put pins in my doll of you.

by Anonymousreply 3May 15, 2024 10:38 PM

Iconique!

by Anonymousreply 4May 15, 2024 10:58 PM

I realise it’s not a recent phenomenon. Sorry, should’ve phrased my post differently. I’ve been sick of it for years now. But it just seems to becoming even more prolific.

by Anonymousreply 5May 15, 2024 11:04 PM

Is your choice of the word "prolific" meant to ironic?

by Anonymousreply 6May 15, 2024 11:20 PM

I think it’s a brave and stunning word choice!

by Anonymousreply 7May 15, 2024 11:28 PM

I’d actually thought “ironic” had since been replaced by the use of “obtuse” or “literal” (?!).

by Anonymousreply 8May 16, 2024 2:34 AM

For me, it’s the word “surreal.” It was widely discovered in the early aughts & now everyone & his brother uses it indiscriminately.

by Anonymousreply 9May 16, 2024 2:40 AM

Something has to fill the gaping hole left by the decline in popularity of “awesome.”

by Anonymousreply 10May 16, 2024 2:58 AM

R9 That’s another good example.

by Anonymousreply 11May 16, 2024 5:58 AM

Everything IS iconic….. for 15 minutes.

by Anonymousreply 12May 16, 2024 6:18 AM

Ionic is my favorite period of Ancient Greek history.

by Anonymousreply 13May 16, 2024 11:28 AM

The Times had a front page story yesterday in its print edition on the 21st century proliferation of the use of the word “journey.”

by Anonymousreply 14May 17, 2024 6:20 AM

I don't know. The inappropriate use of the word "legendary" drives me more insane than iconic.

by Anonymousreply 15May 17, 2024 12:09 PM

Isn't it iconic?

by Anonymousreply 16May 19, 2024 12:47 AM

The intense overpraising of anything above average is part of 21st century culture, unfortunately. I saw an article the other day that called John Krasinski an "auteur".

by Anonymousreply 17May 19, 2024 3:35 AM

Awesome.

by Anonymousreply 18May 19, 2024 3:38 AM

Isn't it ironic that iconic has become iconic which is ironic itself??
