Is anybody else getting tired of seeing this word used to describe practically everything entertainment-related these days?
“Iconic”

it's a running joke on this show smiling friends, they refer to some mundane thing as iconic in every episode.

It's not a recent thing. Iconic has been overused and abused for over a decade now. It's been a joke for a long time.

R2 has it right. It was fucking tired many years ago. Say it to me once, and I'll wince. Say it with "impactful," and I will go home and put pins in my doll of you.

Iconique!

I realise it’s not a recent phenomenon. Sorry, should’ve phrased my post differently. I’ve been sick of it for years now. But it just seems to becoming even more prolific.

Is your choice of the word "prolific" meant to ironic?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | May 15, 2024 11:20 PM |
I think it’s a brave and stunning word choice!

I’d actually thought “ironic” had since been replaced by the use of “obtuse” or “literal” (?!).

For me, it’s the word “surreal.” It was widely discovered in the early aughts & now everyone & his brother uses it indiscriminately.

Something has to fill the gaping hole left by the decline in popularity of “awesome.”
by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 16, 2024 2:58 AM |
R9 That’s another good example.

Everything IS iconic….. for 15 minutes.

Ionic is my favorite period of Ancient Greek history.

The Times had a front page story yesterday in its print edition on the 21st century proliferation of the use of the word “journey.”

I don't know. The inappropriate use of the word "legendary" drives me more insane than iconic.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 17, 2024 12:09 PM |
Isn't it iconic?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 19, 2024 12:47 AM |
The intense overpraising of anything above average is part of 21st century culture, unfortunately. I saw an article the other day that called John Krasinski an "auteur".

Awesome.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | May 19, 2024 3:38 AM |
Isn't it ironic that iconic has become iconic which is ironic itself??
