Billy Campbell

Jaw-droppingly gorgeous in "The Rocketeer."

Why didn't he have a better career?

by Anonymousreply 9912/27/2014

I thought you were talking about the Melrose character there played by Andrew Shue. You remember that AMAZING actor?

by Anonymousreply 111/25/2010

by Anonymousreply 211/25/2010

A mystery. He was a good actor as well as being so pretty. Once and Again may have been his career high point.

by Anonymousreply 311/25/2010

He was great in the short-lived series Once and Again &, and JLo selected him as her c0-star in "Enough" after he won a Golden Globe for O&A.

He is as heir to the Champion Spark Plug fortune and enjoys sailing around the world so money was never an issue. He was also good in The 4400

by Anonymousreply 411/25/2010

Not gay. Just hasn't found the right bea... er, woman, yet. He mostly dates women from Europe, anyway, so it's not like any of you would know them.

by Anonymousreply 511/25/2010

OP, I have always asked myself that question too!

Was hot to watch him in Tales of the City too, and along with fellow "pretty actor with surprisingly smallish career", Cary Elwes in Coppola's Dracula.

by Anonymousreply 611/25/2010

Apparently straight, at least according to Armistead Maupin on his commentary track to Tales of the Ciy.

by Anonymousreply 711/25/2010

What's wrong with white?

by Anonymousreply 1011/25/2010

R9 is an idiot. Campbell has just gotten better with age, both his hot looks and his very good acting.

by Anonymousreply 1111/25/2010

Is this the guy who played Stephen's gunned-down-in-Moldavia lover in "Dynasty"?

by Anonymousreply 1211/25/2010

Yes R12.

by Anonymousreply 1311/25/2010

I lived on the same quiet block in the West Village as Billy and Jennifer Connelly when they were dating in the 90s and often saw them walking around in a highly affectionate manner. I'm sure the physical display wasn't only for my sake. Sorry!%0D %0D He was pretty hilarious in that Frasier episode in which he more or less played himself as the perfect man. Except that he sang off-key.

by Anonymousreply 1411/25/2010

Didn't he play the gay lover in the 1980's soap Dynasty?

by Anonymousreply 1511/25/2010

15 years ago, he would have played the Jon Hamm role in Mad Men.

by Anonymousreply 1611/25/2010

See r12 and 13 for your answer, r15.

by Anonymousreply 1711/25/2010

I was going to post that, R14.

When Martin sees him in the cafe and comments about how handsome he is, to Frasers chagrin, is a funny scene since dad is a Mo in real life!

He is unspeakably handsome, especially as he ages.

by Anonymousreply 1811/25/2010

He's extremely good looking, but I don't find him hot in the least. Does that make sense?

by Anonymousreply 1911/25/2010

He's always said that he did just as many pilots as George Clooney

by Anonymousreply 2011/25/2010

Really, r20? Did Billy and George do them in the cockpit or in a motel room during stopovers?

by Anonymousreply 2111/25/2010

George has done more pilots. Billy has done more flight attendants.

by Anonymousreply 2211/25/2010

I used to get him mixed up with Campbell Scott. Billy was so hot as a space pirate on "Star Trek: The Next Generation." And the homoerotic tension between him and Wesley was palpable. I think that's where Joss Whedon got the idea for "Firefly."

by Anonymousreply 2311/25/2010

I really liked "The Rocketeer", and can't figure out why everyone decided it stank before they saw it.

by Anonymousreply 2411/26/2010

handsome. lacks heat.

by Anonymousreply 2511/26/2010

You think Maupin is above playing the PR game do you r7?%0D %0D You believe that if it gives you comfort.

by Anonymousreply 2711/26/2010

Me too, r24. Jennifer Connelly was gorgeous in that one. I had a crush on her too.

by Anonymousreply 2811/26/2010

"The Rocketeer" came out about the time that young people were deciding they had no interest whatsoever in "period" motion pictures, and unfortunately it was a movie with a young adult target audience that was set in the 30s with scrupulous period detail.

by Anonymousreply 2911/26/2010

He and Connelly were engaged for years. She broke it off and Maupin talked about how Billy cried his heart out over it IIRC on the set of Tales. %0D %0D I love that Frasier episode. I wish Frasier would come back as . . . Frasier! And everyone else before Martin dies.

by Anonymousreply 3011/26/2010

Hot then, hot now. I think he's incredibly sexy. I also think he makes a great villain. He should play villains more often.

by Anonymousreply 3111/26/2010

He was very sexy as an accused rapist on an episode of L&O SVU. He had to strip (turning in his clothes as evidence) while being interviewed by Chris Meloni.

by Anonymousreply 3211/27/2010

Why does Jennifer Connolly prefer homely guys over handsome studs?

by Anonymousreply 3311/27/2010

because he is uncut.

by Anonymousreply 3411/27/2010

He was fantastic in Tales of the City. That was a revelation to me since he'd been so dull in Dynasty (but apparently, that was how the part was written).

Liked him in Rocketeer and also in Once and Again. And the Fraiser episode was great too.

Really surprised his career didn't go further.

by Anonymousreply 3511/27/2010

His nose was too small and chiseled funny.

by Anonymousreply 3611/27/2010

His name isn't manly enough. It's a little boy's name.

by Anonymousreply 3711/27/2010

He's my perfect guy...

by Anonymousreply 3811/27/2010

"He initially planned of becoming a comic book artist and studied illustration at the American Academy of Art in Chicago." -- that's interesting, seeing as how he is most famous for playing the Rocketeer, a character from a comic-book, a character modeled on the writer-artist-creator Dave Stevens.

I like how this page titles a section "Die-Hard Bachelor."

by Anonymousreply 3911/27/2010

His name is Bill Campbell, OP.

Yes, he used to be nice-looking. He appeared in the 1992 Francis Ford Coppola version of Dracula and was at his peak then.

Unfortunately, just like his co-star Cary Elwes, he went downhill in the years following it.

by Anonymousreply 4011/28/2010

by Anonymousreply 4111/28/2010

he left acting for a while to sail around the world or something like that

by Anonymousreply 4211/28/2010

"The Rocketeer" is on, and I'd forgotten how gorgeous he was.%0D %0D I'd also forgotten that Jennifer Connolly used to have a hell of a rack - where did that go? %0D %0D Surgery, weight loss, or removing a pound of kleenex from her bra?

by Anonymousreply 4411/28/2010

R40, meet R6.

by Anonymousreply 4512/01/2010

He was fantastic in Tales of The City? How so?

by Anonymousreply 4612/01/2010

He is rich, doesn't need to act for the money

by Anonymousreply 4712/01/2010

I think he s incredibly handsome still at 51 and great looking in everything he ever did. Dating women in Europe and you wouldnt know any of them is pretty lame............ He s 52 and never married and no kids, for Hollywood straight stars that s almost unheard of. My guess is gay, but either way he is superb.

by Anonymousreply 4806/19/2011

If he really was gay he wouldn't have played the gay lover on such a high-profile show as DYNASTY-it would have opened up a can of worms at the time as to his actual sexual preference.

by Anonymousreply 4906/19/2011

I thought he got married?%0D %0D I must be thinking of another Billy.

by Anonymousreply 5006/19/2011

He's no Jonathan Cake

by Anonymousreply 5106/19/2011

But so few people are, R51.

by Anonymousreply 5206/20/2011

I'm pretty sure he dropped out of Hollywood. He owns a Carniceria in Cathederal City, near Palm Springs. I see him almost daily.

by Anonymousreply 5306/20/2011

Armistead Maupin said he's straight, and he hates the closet cases (Marcus D'Amico, anyone?)

by Anonymousreply 5406/20/2011

Armistead Maupin is a fat star fucker.

by Anonymousreply 5506/20/2011

The nude scenes in TOTC revealed he is cut.

by Anonymousreply 5606/20/2011

No acting sparks. Whereas someone like Tom Hardy can deliver the unexpected and element of danger. %0D %0D Colin Farrell was almost a lookalike if you think of him in Minority Report. But even in that small part he radiated something beyond mere handsomeness. That's the difference between an actor like Billy Campbell and a star.%0D %0D Why does Ewan McGregor have such a solid career? It's not because of any looks he has or had.

by Anonymousreply 5706/20/2011

As was said upthread, he was dull as dishwater in Dynasty.

I figured his career wouldn't go any place after that, so was shocked when he starred in Rocketeer. Great movie, but he wasn't anything to write home about it that.

So, imagine my surprise when he was the hottest thing in Tales. He just exploded in that film. Was perfect in that role. Had many a JO fantasy about him after Tales.

Guess it just takes the right part, but he was fantastic in it. Ever since, he's been one of my favorite actors.

by Anonymousreply 5806/20/2011

[quote]Why does Ewan McGregor have such a solid career?

Fast forward to 0:25 and enjoy the ride ...

by Anonymousreply 5906/20/2011

I saw him on The View one day long ago. He talked of still sleeping with a teddy bear and that he liked to wear a sarong around the house. I've had a crush on him since I was a kid.

by Anonymousreply 6007/20/2011

I thought he acted the hell out of his Dynasty character given that it was a soap (with a great deal of restrictions what to show and say) and a rather dull plot.

by Anonymousreply 6107/20/2011

Was one of the best guest rogues on Star Trek Next Generation ever.

by Anonymousreply 6207/20/2011

I think he was hot when he was 20 and he s hot at 52. I agree he seemed to lack heat on screen in some of the things I saw him in. He was an heir to an auto parts fortune but per an interview he said that it was small change and he went thru it in a year when he was a teenager. He is still working at 52 probably partly for the dough. He has lived with the same roommate for like 25 years. That roommate eventually go married and they have a kid and the 3 of them still to this day live with Campbell in his house. The bit about wearing a sarong around the house is a big turnoff. He seems to be kind of eccentric in his personal life as he ages to say the least. Still a total babe, aging well.

by Anonymousreply 6312/22/2012

This zombi thread useless without an updated picture.

by Anonymousreply 6412/22/2012

I think he has the tinyest dick I've ever seen.

by Anonymousreply 6512/22/2012

Good looking but not sexy

by Anonymousreply 6612/22/2012

He's very good looking but it's like he doesn't try anymore. He played a wealthy lawyer in that Ricky Gervais movie Ghost Town, the character he played was supposed to be a humorless stuffed shirt but he just played it as if the guy were some kind of emotionless drone.

by Anonymousreply 6712/22/2012

6' 4"

by Anonymousreply 6812/22/2012

I find him incredibly sexy--always have. A bit of trivia: the role of Riker on Star Trek TNG came down to him and Jonathan Frakes.

In this interview, he reveals that he considers himself sort of dilettante when it comes to acting, and that he basically does it to pay for his real love, which is sailing. He also reveals that people in his life call him Ollie--short for his middle name, Oliver.

by Anonymousreply 6912/23/2012

Because he wouldn't fuck those agents at William Morris in the mouth on the casting couch. Next!

by Anonymousreply 7012/23/2012

Oooooh, just saw he's on Twitter.

I want him to do very nasty things to me.

by Anonymousreply 7112/23/2012

[quote]I want him to do very nasty things to me.

Could you please be a bit more specific.

by Anonymousreply 7212/23/2012

On the final episode of 'Once and Again' he said he has done as many pilots as George Clooney.

by Anonymousreply 7312/23/2012

He's purty

by Anonymousreply 7512/23/2012

He may be many things, R74, but I don't think boring is one of them.

by Anonymousreply 7612/23/2012

I liked his shaggy look in that show "The 4400"

by Anonymousreply 7712/23/2012

Rockin' a half top

by Anonymousreply 7812/23/2012

by Anonymousreply 7912/24/2012

No one's mentioned his recent role in AMC's "The Killing"?

by Anonymousreply 8012/27/2012

He's very good-looking but I find he has no sex appeal. Reminds me of Tom Welling in that regard.

by Anonymousreply 8112/27/2012

He will always be my #1 dream man. I find him beautiful and sexy. Also, when I was younger and cuter, people would tell me I looked like him. He is several years older than me but has aged way better!

He seems like he would be out if he were gay.

by Anonymousreply 8212/27/2012

How long was ge with Jennifer?

by Anonymousreply 8312/27/2012

Did he beat up Tanya Tucker too?

by Anonymousreply 8412/27/2012

I'd still do him

by Anonymousreply 8512/27/2012

He's heir to a large fortune. He doesn't seem like the alpha-type. Probably doesn't like to make waves with his family. He probably stayed pretty much in the closet and played by the rules.

On screen, he could convey different parts of his personality and be anyone he wanted to. His love scenes with men are beautiful. I think the fact that he's 51 and has been linked only to Virginia Madsen and Jennifer Connelly, and the face he has no kids, pretty much points to being gay.

by Anonymousreply 8612/28/2012

No sex appeal, R81? R U nuts?

by Anonymousreply 8712/28/2012

In the early 1990s he was my neighbor on Horatio St. in NYC and I would often see him walking arm and arm with Jennifer Connelly. I don't think he was putting on an act for my sake.

DL Faves Cherry Jones and Mary Testa also lived on the block (not together!).

by Anonymousreply 8812/28/2012

r53, he played a major character in the recent series on AMC 'The Killing'.

by Anonymousreply 8912/28/2012

Why does he have 3 balls in R87?

by Anonymousreply 9012/30/2012

The top ball is his retracted penis.

by Anonymousreply 9112/30/2012

I like to think he is a "grower" not a "shower". I can relate! He is so hot I wouldn't care what size his cock is!

by Anonymousreply 9212/30/2012

I wouldn't either, R92.

by Anonymousreply 9312/30/2012

R85 is Neve Cambell's brother, right? The guy who starred in Trick?

by Anonymousreply 9412/31/2012

Yes, and he's no Billy Campbell.

by Anonymousreply 9512/31/2012

by Anonymousreply 9601/01/2013

Played the American suitor of Lucy (Sadie Frost) in the Francis Ford Coppola 'Dracula' film in 1992.

He was at the peak of his beauty then, as was Cary Elwes who played one of Lucy's other suitors.

Richard E. Grant played the third suitor.

by Anonymousreply 9701/01/2013

Anybody catch this 6'4" hunk of gorgeous manmeat on Syfy's Helix?

Still no ring on that finger...

by Anonymousreply 9805/10/2014

Sigh. Another year gone by and I'm still not married to him.
