From back in the day when the Deuce was gritty, crime-ridden and reeking of cum. Any memories?
Show Palace All Male Follies on 8th Avenue

I get so sick of responses like yours, r1. It was a different time and no one knew of AIDS. Why the hate? Are you jealous of those of us who could have fun freely back in the day BEFORE the specter of AIDS?
|by Anonymous||reply 2||08/27/2010|
Was this the sort of place similar to where Adrian Brody does that weird punk/masochistic strip dance wearing the tiny speedo in SUMMER OF SAM? It's pretty hot but the place is creepy.
|by Anonymous||reply 3||08/27/2010|
Yes, r3.%0D %0D And cut the shit out out R1. It is insulting to those who are afflicted and not that you said it was but NEWSFLASH!! AIDS is not a death sentence anymore.
|by Anonymous||reply 4||08/27/2010|
So, R4, was Adrian's strip in SUMMER OF SAM somewhat authentic/accurate then? Did they usually try to get prettyboy straight guys to dance by letting them do whatever they want onstage (Adrian shreds up that life-size doll)? Did they ever get fully nude or have erections? Did they try to butch it up big time like he does to overcompensate for the ultra-gay act of dancing in your underwear and being oogled? It seems like back when these places were popular only straight-seeming guys would "sell" onstage, but I'm not sure. Times and tastes have certainly changed, it seems.
|by Anonymous||reply 5||08/27/2010|
I hated those scenes in SUMMER OF SAM. It felt dim-witted and gratuitous. Spike Lee has no understanding of gay men or gay life, then or now. %0D %0D PS: Brody would never have been hot enough to have worked on the strip back in the day.
|by Anonymous||reply 6||08/27/2010|
So was Adrian's strip in SUMMER OF SAM somewhat authentic/accurate then?%0D %0D No, but only because he was lousy and would not have lasted 1 week, management would have told him do not come back.%0D %0D Did they usually try to get prettyboy straight guys to dance by letting them do whatever they want onstage (Adrian shreds up that life-size doll)?%0D %0D No, porn stars had a certain freedom but never anything with blow-up dolls. And they were gaygaygay, expecially in those pre-Viagra days.%0D %0D Did they ever get fully nude or have erections?%0D %0D Yes, and yes. Otherwise I would not have gone as often as I did. :)%0D %0D Did they try to butch it up big time like he does to overcompensate for the ultra-gay act of dancing in your underwear and being oogled?%0D %0D Not really. Some of the guys were very masculine though (until they opened their mouth and you heard major gay voice.)%0D %0D It seems like back when these places were popular only straight-seeming guys would "sell" onstage, but I'm not sure.%0D %0D Nope.%0D %0D Times and tastes have certainly changed, it seems.%0D %0D Not really. Gay men still want to see hot naked men. It is definitely still around in NYC, but not readily available at 1:30 PM in Times Square.

"I hated those scenes in SUMMER OF SAM. It felt dim-witted and gratuitous. Spike Lee has no understanding of gay men or gay life, then or now."%0D %0D Perfectly stated, and I agree 100% with your point about Spike.

How nicely put.
|by Anonymous||reply 9||08/27/2010|
r9, do you think that Gays of 30 years ago had no self-worth?
|by Anonymous||reply 10||08/27/2010|
Oh please R9 - as if you never "sexted" or perused a guy on Craigslist.com o posted your own dick shot online some where - all hallmarks of "young, modern gay(s) with a sense of self-worth"
|by Anonymous||reply 11||08/27/2010|
Believe me, if all these self-righteous young gays were alive in a time when there WAS freedom to do anything they wanted sexually-without facing death as a consequence-they WOULD.
And yes, before AIDS there was sexual freedom. Sure, there were STDs but they could be treated easily.
People just did what comes naturally back in the day. No need to disparage.
|by Anonymous||reply 12||08/27/2010|
Was cruised by Johnny Harden there.

Shut the fuck up yourself reply 2, R1 is right. Show Palace was open a good ten years into the AIDS crisis. He's a shot of the gorgeous place.

(I wrote the following on a blog I co-authored with a guy named "Slenderfella" about 5 years ago. Suffice it to say, I DEFINITELY remember the Show Palace...)%0D %0D The Old ShowPalace on Old Eighth Avenue -- A First Time Visitors Account circa 1988%0D %0D I had always wanted to visit that place, but never had gotten around to it. This was do-or-die time -- I was about to move out of the city for a job. So, one afternoon at lunch, (I was working in the Time-Life Building right across from Radio City), I decided to forego the two martini lunch and head over to Eighth to check out what it was all about.%0D %0D Up the stairs. Paid my admission to the character behind the plate glass window (I think it was 10 bucks or something like that -- wonder what it would be now?), entered the door, and was transported to nirvana. Three theatres for my choosing. Lots of folks in attendance -- lunch hour was a prime time for all the office trade. Suits, ties, briefcases...a suit-and-tie guy's dream.%0D %0D Went into the theatre that was in the middle. Dark. Two guys up on the stage faux-dancing. Totally buck naked...except for boots. [At first I thought that was an odd fashion choice, but came to discover that it was a law in NYC at the time that "adult" entertainers at least had to have on shoes. Go figure.] Nothing too exciting in there -- older guys sitting there pulling their puds. Not what I was after.%0D %0D Out of that theatre and into the next one. More like a video room, with chairs scattered all around. Upon entry, I was drawn into a group surrounding a man. A business man. A HOT business man, with an Armani suit on -- but with his pants and boxers around his ankles, jacking one of the biggest cocks I've ever seen. He was being watched by about 3 guys, but none of them were helping him out. At all. Taking the bull by the horns, I walked up behind him, whispered in his ear "you need another touch on that, man?", to which he groaned and leaned back into me. I took that as a "yes", and did the ol' reacharound -- but first got a dollop of lube in my hand from the bottle in his hand. I swear his dick was so hard it could have cut diamonds, and he started pumping into me -- literally fucking my hand, I swear. The effect on me was considerable -- at this point, I hadn't shucked down my trousers. But dry-hump him I did. One hand on him, the other around his waist, up to his pecs through his starched shirt. My tongue? Why, in his ear, of course. That really drove him wild.%0D %0D But I made sure to vary the pressure and the strokes. Wanted this guy (with a wedding ring gleaming on his left hand) to fully appreciate what a treasure he had found. Talked to him softly between ear/tongue fucks. Lots of "you like that, huh?", "c'mon, make that cock harder for me", and "you horny fucker" -- classy stuff like that.%0D %0D After about 10 minutes, thought it was time to bring him on home. Jacking him in earnest, I turned his head and dove down on his mouth, tongue flitting in and out. His hot breath rushed in my mouth, he groaned, tensed, and started convulsing. Out of the corner of my eye I could see his cum spurt -- right into the face of a guy that had knelt down in front of him. Blast after blast. When he had settled down, I removed my hand, took out my handkerchief, wiped off my hand, and made my exit. Last glimpse I had of him he was leaning against the wall, panting. Just the way I like to leave my prey. LOL%0D %0D On to the third venue. This one was set up more like a traditional theatre....with rows of seats in front of a large screen. After scoping it out and figuring out the protocol, I chose to sit in a back row, a couple of seats in [in order to give someone an opportunity to join me without having to step over me.] I sat down, and it didn't take long, maybe 7 minutes. A guy that had been watching the floor show in the other theatre came in, stared at me, caught my eye, and with a nod of my head, I gave him the "go-ahead". He sat down right next to me. I hadn't unzipped yet, because I like being groped, and working up to the unveiling.%0D %0D TO BE CONTINUED.
|by Anonymous||reply 16||08/30/2010|
Grope he did. And I loved it. When he started doing the "milking" thing (up the shaft), I figured it was time to give him the goods -- as I didn't want a wet spot on my trousers. I unzipped, shucked, and he gave an intake of breath, like "wow, what do we have here?" Then it continued. No lube was necessary here, because my pre-cum was copious. I guess he had been watching me do the Armani guy, because he also varied strokes and the like, driving me crazy.%0D %0D It built. And built. He brought me down. And built it up again. And then it was time. I leaned forward, gasping "this is it, don't stop for anything", and he pumped me to an explosive....uh, explosion(!) on the back of the seat in front of me. About 6 big blasts...and some of it got on my shoes.%0D %0D Bastard that I was (or the role I was playing that day at noon), I zipped up and stepped over him. Left with mission(s) accomplished: checked the place out, got somebody off, and somebody serviced me. All in all, a gratifying noon hour.%0D %0D And I made return visits, as well. %0D %0D -END-

Some of us, Dancers and Managers of the Show Palace are still alive Mr. AIDS. We wore shoes and boots because of the clientele would leave us presents (puddle of Jizz). You learned fast on the mean streets of New York. Get that.;) "Gay Cancer" or as you refer to "AIDS" happen after I left. Many had died afterwards, not bc of "AIDS" but bc of overdoses.
Headliners, like Scorpio, well, he died of AIDS and many of the porn stars including those who were hustling.
You might be interested that there will be a book coming.... I'm writing it now.
Glad we made your visits to the Show Palace memorable ones.

Where, pray tell?

Didn't the actor who played the hot cowboy in "The Boys in the Band" movie dance at the Show Palace?
|by Anonymous||reply 20||12/09/2012|
|by Anonymous||reply 21||12/09/2012|
God, the Show Palace was a disgusting hell-hole. The skanky, unattractive dancers would parade out on stage and do a crappy strip and then jack off and cum right on the stage. There were creeps everywhere in the audience jacking off along with the dancer. The place reeked of cum and disinfectant. It was dark and filthy. When I picture hell, I picture that place.
|by Anonymous||reply 22||12/09/2012|
All the many times I went, it was exactly the same.
|by Anonymous||reply 23||12/09/2012|
I was there once, maybe around '95 or so. Maybe it closed not too long after, unless it was a different place altogether. I remember climbing stairs, and several different spaces within the facility, I sat in a room that had a little raised stage and it was a j/o show. I remember one of the guys was black, and wearing black cowboy type boots. There was a chair on the stage and he was furiously pumping. I don't remember if he came, or if the other performers came. I remember a little Asian man sitting near me came though, zipping himself right up without wiping, and left. It seemed much dirtier and drearier than the Gaiety, if that's possible. I only started being sexually active in 1988 when I was 18, and didn't start coming to NYC until 1991. I guess I missed the whole Deuce scene, as a participant, anyway. I definitely remember seeing it by car or bus.

Good luck with that book R18. I could barely make it through your post here, I can't imagine reading an entire book that was written so poorly.

I used to work in Time Square in a publishing house. Sometimes we would stop off after work to catch some of the performances. There were good days and bad days. I remember a performer named "Stallone" who became my favorite. I also that recall that someone recorded a lot of the shows and was selling DVD's. Are those around?
|by Anonymous||reply 26||08/06/2014|
I remember porn star Pierce Daniels dancing there. He stripped for a while and then went into the audience and went down on a hot man. After the guy came down his throat, he got back on the stage and finished his act.
Chance Caldwell, David Morris, Scott Irish, Sgt. Glenn Swann and many many more porn people played there.

For a young man just exploring his sexuality, the Show Palace was a slice of heaven. The best part of it was the sleaziness, which made the experience all the more exciting, since it seemed so forbidden. I would hurry up the stairs, usually the late shows, with my heart pounding, because I would soon be seeing men stripping and having sex. Who cared if they were not the most beautiful or the sex wasn't the most passionate! It was the sight of men stripping and having sex in front of an audience ( that's the voyeuristic/exhibitionistic part of me). I felt like a 12 year -old discovering his dad's dirty magazines. The memories of those days still bring a warm feeling to me, and the atmosphere of sleaze made it much more titillating.

Show World across the street was like a sexual Disneyland. There you could see a woman strip while the other member of the "Love Team" sat in the audience stroking his dick. At a certain point he would join her onstage and get a blow job. Then the two would fuck for about twenty minutes and he would pull out and cum all over her stomach or on her face. Fun times were had by all. Love was in the air!
Some of the guys worked in both the Show Palace and Show World. alternating between gay and straight sex.

I went a couple of times when I was new to the city and coming out. I never did anything but I loved the sex drenched smells, the gogo boys... R16 R17 got it right - just as I remember too.
