The police film of the 1962 Mansfield, Ohio undercover men''s bathroom sting
A documentary film hit the gay festival circuit last year showing the Mansfield, Ohio Police Department in the summer of 1962 photographing men having sex in a public restroom under the main square of the city. A cameraman hid in a closet and watched the clandestine activities through a two-way mirror.
Well, someone just posted the sting footage on line.Pretty amazing stuff. Be warned it is pretty raunchy. (NSFW)

The police filmed over a three week period, and the resulting movie was used to obtain the convictions of over 30 local men on charges of sodomy. With some of this footage the Mansfield Police later produced Camera Surveillance, an instructional film circulated in law enforcement circles. It showed how to set up a sting operation to film and arrest sex deviants. William E. Jones found a degraded version of the film on the internet, then reedited the footage to make Mansfield 1962, a haunting, silent condensation of the original.
At link is the newspaper cover story from the local paper at the time announcing the bust. Those arrested are referred to as "sexual deviates."

Mmm. Hot vintage cock! Dig the flattop geek in glasses; right out of "Leave It to Beaver."
|by Anonymous||reply 3||04/01/2009|
I like how the newpaper says, "17 Arrests Climax Probe."
|by Anonymous||reply 4||04/01/2009|
Notice how several men are in multiple shots. Probably police provocateurs who were not arrested. The police historically used these stings as a hazing of new recruits, to humiliate them and give their officers something on them.

Amazing how strong the sexual urge is. Those men risked getting caught (and WERE) in that skanky restroom so long ago. Another time altogether. And imagine how much self hate must have been going on.
Notice the ones who dropped trou and actually bent over. No lube, I assume. What about hygiene, too? You KNOW those guys weren't "fresh." Just very sad and yet fascinating.
|by Anonymous||reply 7||04/01/2009|
I almost never feel this, but it seems really wrong to watch that footage.
|by Anonymous||reply 8||04/01/2009|
Funny, they don't look "gay" at all.
|by Anonymous||reply 9||04/01/2009|
couldn't some of those people still be alive
|by Anonymous||reply 10||04/01/2009|
Proof that cruising is innate?
|by Anonymous||reply 13||04/01/2009|
Looks like last Saturday at Balley's Health Club.
|by Anonymous||reply 14||04/01/2009|
I went through a tea room sex thing in the late 70's. I never remembered anyone getting fucked.
The young dark-haired guy in that film is HOT.
|by Anonymous||reply 16||04/01/2009|
Now we have the answer to the question, "What if Turner Classic Movies showed porn?"
|by Anonymous||reply 17||04/01/2009|
why were some of them peering around the corner for a few minutes?
i didn't get that.
|by Anonymous||reply 18||04/01/2009|
They were probably watching the entrance, r18, in case someone walked in.
|by Anonymous||reply 19||04/01/2009|
One guy looked like he was gagging and washing out his mouth. We still carry that fear and shame and self loathing even though we like to think we don't. It wasn't so long ago.
|by Anonymous||reply 20||04/01/2009|
Were some of those guys taking it in the ass? why didn't they go into the stall and shut the door?
|by Anonymous||reply 21||04/01/2009|
"To Catch A Sex Deviant" used to be one of my favourite shows. Too bad it got cancelled.
|by Anonymous||reply 22||04/01/2009|
Wow, repression was HOTT.
|by Anonymous||reply 23||04/01/2009|
"And imagine how much self hate must have been going on."
Project much? There was probably plenty of internalized homophobia but you can also bet there were plenty of guys who thought the scene was hot and enjoyed the sex.
|by Anonymous||reply 24||04/01/2009|
Wow. We saw this about six months ago...
OP must be the director, producer or one of the guys caught.
|by Anonymous||reply 25||04/01/2009|
OMG, I saw my Grampa Bruce!!
|by Anonymous||reply 26||04/01/2009|
At least the bathroom wasn't segregated.
|by Anonymous||reply 27||04/01/2009|
Video isn't working for me. All I see is a black screen.
|by Anonymous||reply 28||04/01/2009|
I could easily, and in 2009, make the same film of straight swingers doing the same thing in Pennsylvania.
|by Anonymous||reply 29||04/01/2009|
This was headline news at the time it happened? That's hard to believe, that people would care.
|by Anonymous||reply 30||04/01/2009|
Heterosexual men have historically HATED the idea of homosexual men enjoying sex, r30. Even tho the film demonstrates that the men put effort in not being seen by non-cruisers.

Having grown up in Ohio, I have to say this is a fairly normal weekend on I-75.
|by Anonymous||reply 32||04/01/2009|
I long for the days when sex was dirty...
|by Anonymous||reply 33||04/01/2009|
At link is the mug shot of the hottie of the group. He kinda has a Sal Mineo vibe going on.
I swear one of the guys was a dead ringer for the Professor from Gilligan's Island. He was even wearing a pair of khakis and a wrinkled oxford shirt with the sleeves partially rolled up just like the Prof.
Another guy reminded me of a popular character actor from sixties television.
|by Anonymous||reply 34||04/01/2009|
Congrats to R24 for winning the fucktard of the day award. Sweets you can still enjoy the sex and have self loathing issues.
|by Anonymous||reply 35||04/01/2009|
I love how twisted R34 is.
|by Anonymous||reply 36||04/01/2009|
That one guy looked like Van Johnson.
Or Peter Lawford...
|by Anonymous||reply 37||04/01/2009|
According to William Jones, the film maker that made the documentary
The original footage had "voice-over narration, as illiterate and hateful a text as I have ever heard committed to film, attested to the police's unenlightened attitudes."
|by Anonymous||reply 38||04/01/2009|
Very hot black guy at about 4:15-4:30.
Then Walter Brennan shows up at 5 to spoil the party.
|by Anonymous||reply 39||04/01/2009|
R7's post reads as more backward and naive than anything in the video. I hope the poster is a woman and not a gay man.
|by Anonymous||reply 41||04/01/2009|
R35 is so smart. If she ever gets a boyfriend he's going to be a lucky person.
|by Anonymous||reply 42||04/01/2009|
Off topic, but found linked to this vide... this one is HOT:
|by Anonymous||reply 43||04/01/2009|
More pics of your hotness.
|by Anonymous||reply 44||04/01/2009|
And what credentials do YOU have, r41, for being so worldly wise and understanding of what men were like who cruised bathrooms in 1962, for chrissake? Hot sex with an element of risk is one thing. Anonymous bathroom sex as a CHOICE is one thing. Risking an arrest or the ruination of a career and a life for the sake of a blowjob in another era of ZERO gay rights or legal protections is something else entirely. Yes, those men had few outlets for sex in those days. But, still, there were side alley gay bars where at LEAST they knew they were among their own kind and might slip out a back door in case of a raid.
|by Anonymous||reply 45||04/01/2009|
When you think of all the commercial hidden camera videos sold now, viewable online, real and faked, in toilets, locker rooms and all kinds of places, straight and gay, this film is like the Holy Grail of T-room action.
|by Anonymous||reply 46||04/01/2009|
This sting was prompted by the molestation and murder of two little girls (because gay sex is somehow linked to female child molesting).
By law, these men had to undergo psychiatric assessment after being charged and they faced 20 years in prison.
|by Anonymous||reply 47||04/02/2009|
That looks like the lockerroom of every Equinox, NYSC, and Crunch I've ever been to.
|by Anonymous||reply 48||04/02/2009|
R42 is so well adjusted and happy if he's lucky he will be able to lick the spooge off the bathroom floor at his local tearoom.

In Mansfield Ohio? I don't think so.

Mansfield, OH is still a hillbilly hellhole of blue collar, unenlightened low income ingrates.
|by Anonymous||reply 51||04/03/2009|
Do they have tea in these rooms?

My mother lives in a nearby Ohio town. Not only is your description correct, but that part of Ohio is very conservative and Republican.

Uh, actually, I grew up not far from there and there was always a gay-friendly bar or two in Mansfield. One even advertised in the gay pubs as recently as a half dozen years ago.
Springfield, OH, which some think of as a sister city of sorts tho it's 2+ hours away and near Dayton, once had three gay bars. I should know: I was once attacked outside of one them (The Gaslight).
You left and right coast guys are sooooo naive about the Midwest (think Iowa).
|by Anonymous||reply 58||04/04/2009|
I used to think the Professor from Gilligan's Island was hot.
|by Anonymous||reply 59||04/04/2009|
R6 is full of shit.
Has anyone seen the documentary? One of the cameramen Bill Spognardi is still living. He is also mentioned in a book called Rotten To The Core 2 a book about corrupt lawmen in Richland County Ohio.
I wonder if the filmmaker attempted to track down any of the men arrested or found out what happened to them after this.

Guess how old I am, chap.
