The photo of Gary Merrill and Bette Davis is an untrue example:

Bette was never wealthy.

She supported her mother who may have had a "movie star lifestyle".

She supported her sister who was in and out of mental institutions most of her life.

She supported her spoiled daughter and ne'er do well husband well into the 1970s.

Gary Merrill was a working actor and held his own. He paid for the couple's adopted retarded daughter's upkeep at Lockland School.

I wouldn't call Gary Merrill a "hot spouse" either but maybe that's just me.
