Vance is way more dangerous than Trump. Trump isn't ideological at all. Now and then he panics about his own popularity and completely sidesteps what the GOP wants. He has no loyalty to any ideological faction of the right wing and would throw any and all of them under the bus at any minute. They can't wait to get him out of the picture. They have to make sure they're in a position to never have a credible and fair election again, because their electoral base will crumble without Trump.

I think one of the most important questions is what does MAGA think about JD Vance.

And I suspect the answer is...they don't.

He's devoid of charisma and doesn't have nearly the magnetism while, as R6 points out, having double the venal ideological objectives. Which is a problem when you're trying to make people sicker, poorer and angrier.

I can’t help mentally going to probabilities. Trump will never ever resign if he can help it. Even if his health worsens or scandals get worse. It’s highly likely that the only way we get Vance is if Trump truly cannot serve — he’s either dead or he’s thoroughly incapacitated.

Odds of death or total incapacitation between now and late 2028, hard to say but he’s stressed, he’s near 80 and there are increasing signs of advanced heart disease as well as hastening cognitive decline. I’d say… 1 in 3?

On the plus side he would almost certainly ditch Trump's colossally stupid "trade policy" and roll back the tariffs. The stock market would boom and the risk of recession would fade, but there would still be the problem of the big beautiful bill and the massive budget deficits.

The important event is for Trump to resign (unlikely)/become incapacitated (which would require his administration to invoke the 25th Amendment, which is iffy)/be impeached and removed (not gonna happen) / die before January 20, 2027 so that JD will only be qualified for one term beyond Trump's; if his removal is after that date, JD would not only be president immediately but could run for two more terms leading to the nightmare scenario of a President Vance for 10 long years. The US won't even exist if that happens.

Given Shady JD's lack of popularity among MAGAtry, this scenario isn't likely but not out of the question. It's Thiel's wet dream and he has more money than god and now a complete database of every American including all of the details we provide on tax returns (thinking that this information was sacrosanct and would always be protected... ha, not so much in the MAGA era), which he will weaponize.

That's interesting, R44, but that charisma definitely does not make its appearance when he's speaking, in photos or videos, or in his written statements. Bill Clinton had the same potent charisma as Trump does, but times are different now and you have to approach using charismatic influence differently (via social media). Unfortunately, Trump excels at that because he expresses things in the same tone, style, wording that his supporters might use to talk and write or express themselves. That is a huge reason why he's risen to cult-like status. MAGA: "He's sounds just like us!"
