Vance is way more dangerous than Trump. Trump isn't ideological at all. Now and then he panics about his own popularity and completely sidesteps what the GOP wants. He has no loyalty to any ideological faction of the right wing and would throw any and all of them under the bus at any minute. They can't wait to get him out of the picture. They have to make sure they're in a position to never have a credible and fair election again, because their electoral base will crumble without Trump.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | July 18, 2025 1:13 PM |
I think one of the most important questions is what does MAGA think about JD Vance.
And I suspect the answer is...they don't.
He's devoid of charisma and doesn't have nearly the magnetism while, as R6 points out, having double the venal ideological objectives. Which is a problem when you're trying to make people sicker, poorer and angrier.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | July 18, 2025 1:51 PM |

I can’t help mentally going to probabilities. Trump will never ever resign if he can help it. Even if his health worsens or scandals get worse. It’s highly likely that the only way we get Vance is if Trump truly cannot serve — he’s either dead or he’s thoroughly incapacitated.
Odds of death or total incapacitation between now and late 2028, hard to say but he’s stressed, he’s near 80 and there are increasing signs of advanced heart disease as well as hastening cognitive decline. I’d say… 1 in 3?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | July 18, 2025 2:06 PM |
MAGA will fall apart before they fall in line with a President with a brown wife and kids. On the other hand he's even more Fashy than Trump so maybe they'll look the other way about a brown first lady if he's deporting enough brown poor people.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | July 18, 2025 2:06 PM |
I don't think MAGA would be sympathetic to a man who runs like this. How did he manage to get through Marine boot camp? Some DEI for uncoordinated hillbillies with high GPAs?

I think Trump could resign if Putin/Theil threaten to expose whatever blackmail they have on him, likely Epstein related and probably a smoking gun type of thing like hidden video of him raping a 12 year old on Epstein island. It's probably something a lot bigger than the rumored "russian hookers pee tape."
by Anonymous | reply 13 | July 18, 2025 2:09 PM |

A lot of conservative white men fetishize women of color while still holding racist views. JD Vance's wife comes from a wealthy conservative family that taught her to be submissive to men. It's a melange of odious factors that brought them together, even as he attacks and deports people who look like his own kids.

Vance has gone through so many political and religious and name changing metamorphoses… he was literally somebody else when he met and dated Usha Chilikuri at Yale Law. Neither of them were Republicans; she was a Democrat and he Independent. She was a bright and highly ambitious Yale undergraduate alumna earning her Yale Law degree. Their 2014 wedding was interfaith with Hindu and Christian elements mixed together.
Things change. Now he’s a MAGA fascist US vice president and she’s invisible.

Agreed with R8 that Speaker Mikey is a terrifying prospect as President.
Vance is such a chameleon that who knows what he might really do? At the very least, there won't be the insane vindictive reaction to everything daily. Also, he'd likely hold back on some of the more unpopular aspects; unlike Trump, he'd be concerned about limiting their mid-term losses.

Adding to R13, this first recent concession to health issues (which can't be hidden) could now easily be developed as reason to resign, should the deep dark goods on Trump be real, present, and ready to go.
The face-off between Trump and Murdoch over this is riveting. Two elderly power-drunk monsters who won't back down. Would Murdoch have gone there without strong certainty?
As I've noted on other threads, I can't see how one such as Trump, soon in his 80s, can withstand three more years of this self-created stress, in addition to his uncertain attempts at global peace. Vance's words will indeed be of sharp interest as POTUS tries to cope with the steady shadows of ageing.

JD Vance is a tortured closeted Christian with a dangerous world view. He's not in "a lavender marriage" he's a closet case who thinks he can walk the straight and narrow but secretly craves cock, much to his eternal dismay.
Don't pretty these people up. Don't spin soothing narratives that make them halfway relatable, "oh, he's a gay bear with a beard wife" no the fuck he's not. He's a closet case consumed with self loathing and desperate not to let his secret be found out, and he'd throw every gay person in an oven if it would help to deflect from his true self being revealed. They are all deeply deranged people with sick minds and twisted world views, not some cuddly characters with little quirks.

I can answer that my wacko, maga cult family have 100% fealty to trump. They would jump off a cliff if he commanded. With Jay Dee, nope, nada. They could not tell me one thing about him. As for any remaining mainstream GOP leaders, I suspect they do not fear Vance as they fear the trump-maga cult. When will this nightmare be over?
by Anonymous | reply 35 | July 18, 2025 3:33 PM |
On the plus side he would almost certainly ditch Trump's colossally stupid "trade policy" and roll back the tariffs. The stock market would boom and the risk of recession would fade, but there would still be the problem of the big beautiful bill and the massive budget deficits.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | July 18, 2025 3:49 PM |
The important event is for Trump to resign (unlikely)/become incapacitated (which would require his administration to invoke the 25th Amendment, which is iffy)/be impeached and removed (not gonna happen) / die before January 20, 2027 so that JD will only be qualified for one term beyond Trump's; if his removal is after that date, JD would not only be president immediately but could run for two more terms leading to the nightmare scenario of a President Vance for 10 long years. The US won't even exist if that happens.
Given Shady JD's lack of popularity among MAGAtry, this scenario isn't likely but not out of the question. It's Thiel's wet dream and he has more money than god and now a complete database of every American including all of the details we provide on tax returns (thinking that this information was sacrosanct and would always be protected... ha, not so much in the MAGA era), which he will weaponize.
How do I feel about a President Vance? It's time for a patriot to water the tree of liberty.

Johnson is such an oddity. I was recently in a room with him and he is unbelievably charismatic and charming. He comes across as the nicest guy in the world...but you would never let him get too close to you. Like, you would trust him with your neighbor's life but NOT YOURS.
I absolutely see how he got to where he is but I cannot imagine him being successful going any further.

by Anonymous | reply 45 | July 18, 2025 4:17 PM |
That's interesting, R44, but that charisma definitely does not make its appearance when he's speaking, in photos or videos, or in his written statements. Bill Clinton had the same potent charisma as Trump does, but times are different now and you have to approach using charismatic influence differently (via social media). Unfortunately, Trump excels at that because he expresses things in the same tone, style, wording that his supporters might use to talk and write or express themselves. That is a huge reason why he's risen to cult-like status. MAGA: "He's sounds just like us!"
by Anonymous | reply 46 | July 18, 2025 4:26 PM |

[quote]Vance is way more dangerous than Trump.
People have claimed this about so many of Trump's apparent successors, and it's complete bullshit every time. It isn't true about Vance, it wasn't true about Ron DeSantis, and it won't be true about whoever becomes the next big thing in GOP politics.
Vance, for all of his many faults, is not a deranged, narcissistic lunatic with an army of violent, treasonous cultists at his disposal. That's what makes Trump dangerous.
No other major Republican would have done what Trump did leading up to January 6th. Not Vance, not DeSantis, not even Ted Cruz or Josh Hawley (and these are all loathsome people, so this isn't praise for their honor or decency). You have to get down to utter pond scum like Matt Gaetz and Marjorie Taylor Greene before it's even a possibility, but they don't have the cult to back it up.
Vance would be a bad president operating mostly within the laws and conventions of our political system. He wouldn't be the danger to America and the world that Donald Trump is and has always been.

Ya gotta love the idiots who think when Trump goes we'll all just magically return to the norms of 1993 and the whole GOP from the leadership to the voters will magically regain their long gone sanity, reason and integrity.
The courts alone will continue Trump's legacy for generations. The media will continue to be muzzled by their corporate overlords until something is done to change their total grip on the information we're spoon-fed. White Nationalism will remain fully normalized.
Pretending this will all go away once Trump is gone is short-sighted at best.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | July 18, 2025 6:09 PM |
The stage is now set for Trump to have a Putinesque Heart Attack. Sooner rather than later. Why waste time with nature taking its course when you can move faster to get where you need to go. Vance may be more "flexible" when it comes to settling the war in Ukraine in Russia's favor. Netanyahu is next. I hope his will is up to date.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | July 18, 2025 6:09 PM |
R56, it's not all going to go away when Trump is gone, but there are incredibly dangerous qualities to Donald Trump that are specific to him and him alone. Only he has the slavish devotion of his idiot cult. Only he has such a complete, flagrant disregard for the law.
No, things aren't going to go back to the era when bipartisanship was possible any time soon. But we don't even have to look back that far to see a GOP that was crazy but not violent and treasonous. That was the Tea Party from the Obama era, which was awful yet never an existential threat to democracy.

There's only a couple of ways that Johnson could become president:
1) Trump and Vance exit together. Thus the 3rd in line becomes President.
2) Vance exits before Trump, and then Trump exits BEFORE a new VP is designated.
Vance's successor will be whoever HE designates as his VP only after he assumes the role of the President. We aren't like a monarchy where everybody moves up one when someone dies.
