Utah teen sentenced to 100+ years for killing his mother and three siblings when he was 16

TOOELE, Utah — Colin Jeffery “CJ” Haynie was sentenced Wednesday to four consecutive terms of 25 years to life for shooting his mother and three siblings when he was 16.

The judge sentenced Haynie, 19, to the maximum sentence of 25 years to life for each of the five counts after pleading guilty to the crimes. Four of the counts running consecutively, which is 100 years. The last count running concurrent with the others.

Haynie was just 16 years old in 2020 when he shot and killed his mother Consuelo Alejandra Haynie, 52, his two sisters, Alexis, 15, and Milan 12, and his brother Matthew, 14. Haynie then shot his dad, Colin, but hit him in the leg. His dad then wrestled the gun away.

Haynie shot each of them as they returned home.

“Why? It’s the question that’s been haunting everybody. Why? Well, Jeffrey says I was angry at my father. He said dealing with his father made him anxious, so what does Jeffrey do he decided to kill them all,” said prosecutor Scott Broadhead, as he asked the judge to give Haynie the maximum sentence. “This was not a single incident of mass murder. This wasn’t walking into a school and unloading your gun this was planned, it was methodical it was four separate incidents over a five-hour period.”

That’s why Broadhead said Haynie doesn’t deserve to see the light of day again.

“This is not a rehabilitation case. It’s a punishment case. Someone who murders four people, including three children that he knew and cared about, should never be free,” he said.

In the days following the shootings, Colin Haynie released a statement through his attorney.

“As you can imagine, this loss is almost unbearable,” it stated. “Colin has asked me to express his and the family’s profound appreciation for the support given by friends, extended community, law enforcement, and health care providers. Colin was also wounded on Friday, but he expects to recover fully from those injuries.”

Haynie’s attorney pleaded for mercy, asking the judge to run the sentences concurrently, which would put all five counts at 25 years to life. He played a video of Haynie’s graduation showing how Haynie is a changed person.

“The juvenile has demonstrated maturity and rehabilitation sufficient for a chance at life not behind the prison walls,” said Richard Van Wagoner, Haynie’s attorney.

In a surprising message and reaction, Haynie’s own brother, Danny, who was away at college during the shooting, said all of this could have been avoided had his brother gotten the help he needed, saying his dad, Colin was partially to blame for that.

“He was robbed by not getting proper help. While [Jeffrey] may not blame Colin [his dad] anymore for anything. I do because this could have been prevented. This is something I kept silent for too long,” said Danny Haynie via a conference call in court.

Danny pointed to an incident about a month before the shootings where Jeffrey had a conversation with his mom and said some pretty “dark” things.

“This was clearly a dark enough of a red flag to act on. It wasn’t acted on. The irony now is Jeffrey has ended up in jail, and my family is dead,” Danny said.

Clean cut, well groomed, and dressed in a suit, Jeffrey Haynie did speak before sentencing, saying he hopes people can forgive his actions.

“I can ask for forgiveness for my crimes and my mistakes. I want to make sure that people understand that my mistakes in the past are something I will not do again and I have learned from what I have done,” Haynie said, who showed no emotion at all during the entire court proceedings, even when gruesome pictures of his family members where shown of their murders.

Thank goodness we don't have guns in my country. I know that that may raise some Americans' hackles but this is just a horror story.

by Anonymousreply 2July 18, 2023 11:05 AM

[quote] Haynie shot each of them as they returned home.

Wow. One by one, he picked them off.

That's definitely pre-meditated.

He deserves the long sentence.

by Anonymousreply 3July 18, 2023 11:16 AM

Interesting that his surviving brother feels the need to inform the public that his dad is partially to blame.

I think the father must have been an awful, awful bully.

by Anonymousreply 4July 18, 2023 11:17 AM

[quote] Interesting that his surviving brother feels the need to inform the public that his dad is partially to blame.

Yet he, who was of college age and maturity, couldn’t be arsed to raise the alarm with his father and mother, or the authorities?

He sho is ugly, inside and out!

by Anonymousreply 6July 18, 2023 11:52 AM

Too many kids, too little orthodontal work.

by Anonymousreply 7July 18, 2023 12:02 PM

The man is a psycho, he killed his innocent siblings in cold blood. If his family life was so bad then why kill them and not the father who was the source of his issues.

by Anonymousreply 8July 18, 2023 12:30 PM

R8 just speculating, I imagine perhaps his dad made a big deal about “family” but of course, a family where he was the head, the chief, the decider. So if he really hated his dad, he perhaps wanted to kill not just his father, but his most prized possession too: his family.

It doesn’t excuse it. Almost everyone has a shitty dad, but perhaps this sad story will make some mean as shit dad think twice (but probably not)

by Anonymousreply 9July 18, 2023 12:48 PM

But he had his freedoms and that’s sgsss important

by Anonymousreply 10July 18, 2023 12:52 PM

What’s***

by Anonymousreply 11July 18, 2023 12:52 PM

I grew up in a pretty chaotic and abusive home and when I was 15 things turned especially bad in our house where was my mom and and three of my siblings still living at home and there was a period of a few months where all I could think about was how better off I'd be if they were all dead. And there were more than a few nights that I thought about causing a gas leak that would kill everyone but me and then maybe somebody would put me in a more stable situation.

by Anonymousreply 12July 18, 2023 12:57 PM

R12

Please finish your story! Is everyone OK? Did something change during that time or did you and your siblings just leave the house and make your own lives?

by Anonymousreply 13July 18, 2023 1:10 PM

It's odd that that the second son (the killer) is named after the father. Usually it's the firstborn who gets that "honor".

by Anonymousreply 14July 18, 2023 1:24 PM

R12 my mom kicked me out and I stayed with my dad for like 2 days before my stepmom made it impossible for me to live there. After that I klbounced around different friends for about a year then ended up back of my mom's for a few more years and then finally moved away completely. All of our parents are dead now and I only talk to one of my brothers. I haven't seen or spoken with the rest of my siblings in about 15 years.

by Anonymousreply 15July 18, 2023 1:26 PM

But remember, we are only allowed in the US to say: good guys with guns keep us all safe ™

A kid menaced by his dad in an armory of a house. What could possibly go wrong? Well, this.

by Anonymousreply 16July 18, 2023 2:40 PM

Hopefully that includes repeated jailhouse beatings and rapes.

by Anonymousreply 17July 18, 2023 2:51 PM

Tell him to call me.

by Anonymousreply 18July 18, 2023 3:10 PM

R17 what is Americans obsession with vengeance in the form of violence and rape in prison. We should be trying to rehabilitate even in the case of a life sentence. Instead we cage them like dogs and actively hope that they'll go at each other I guess so that they'll be just as violent or more so when they get out.

by Anonymousreply 19July 18, 2023 3:16 PM

I would personally have just got the hell out of there (and I did). Even if the father was horrific and abusive, that doesn't justify killing several people when he could just have got away. That's got to be better than prison for life at least.

by Anonymousreply 20July 18, 2023 3:25 PM

R19 - Your comments are spot-on and make all the sense.

by Anonymousreply 21July 18, 2023 3:31 PM

Mormons?

by Anonymousreply 22July 18, 2023 3:33 PM

R 20 nothing could justify it but I guess when you abuse your kids and ignore their obvious signs of mental illness you sort of roll the dice as to whether they'll end up a psychotic killer.

by Anonymousreply 23July 18, 2023 3:34 PM

R23 Yes, agreed, I do completely get why some people crack and just go with what they want.

by Anonymousreply 24July 18, 2023 3:37 PM

Firing squad would be more appropriate.

by Anonymousreply 25July 18, 2023 3:47 PM

R25, does Utah still have that option?

by Anonymousreply 26July 18, 2023 4:08 PM

by Anonymousreply 29July 18, 2023 4:38 PM

He was 16. I think parents share some fault when children commit heinous crimes. One, how did he have a gun? Two, how could he be so unhinged and his parents not have him committed to an asylum? He could have just as easily murdered several strangers -- which I find worse than murdering people you know.

He's in prison for 100 years, what does Dad get?

by Anonymousreply 30July 18, 2023 4:46 PM

The kid deserves to be locked away forever. That being stated, the dad gives me the creeps. There is an interview of him out there. Real Rusty Yates vibes. Mom grew up in Mexico and stayed at home with the kids. I wonder if Dad is one of those mail-order bride type of men who wanted a submissive wife and ran the home with an iron fist.

by Anonymousreply 32July 18, 2023 5:10 PM

There are tons of Mormons in Mexico. Warren Jeffs went down there a lot so very good chance at mom being some mail order type bride.

by Anonymousreply 33July 18, 2023 5:15 PM

Dad arrived home at 6:15, is shot in the leg by the son upon entering, but police were not dispatched until 7pm. Dad had neighbor drive him and son to the hospital before the police arrived. The son refused to speak to investigators. The surviving brother found out about the murders from social media.

Weird and awkward, yes. But not really a bully.

Although, who knows what goes on behind closed doors.

Two things stand out here to me:

1) Why won't the killer reveal his motive for the crimes? To date, he still hasn't provided an explanation for why he killed his family..

2) He was able to kill each member of his family, by shooting them at point-blank range. Yet his father (who was last to arrive home), was only shot in the leg? Why didn't the boy shoot his father, in the same manner that he shot his mother and siblings?

If I'm asking these questions, I'm wondering if the police have been asking these questions?

And I'm actually wondering if the dad got the boy to do it? And then told him to "shoot me in the leg" so that it looks like he was a target, but so that he wouldn't die.

Something stinks here.

This happened three years ago, R36. Don’t you think investigators would’ve figured that out by now?

by Anonymousreply 37July 18, 2023 7:13 PM

He'll be so old when he gets out.

by Anonymousreply 38July 18, 2023 7:17 PM

[quote] Oh a mistake. Like putting on mismatching socks. Who can learn anything from murdering someone? Every line is so psychopathic.

Seriously. That kid isn’t just troubled, he’s a cold as ice psychopath. Rehabilitation for someone like that is very difficult if even possible.

I watched just a little of the dad at r36 and go ahead and Mary! me but he gives me the creeps. Not all bullies are physically violent and screamers. Sometimes they can just be cold and cruel. Maybe the dad is as much of a psychopath as the son. Apparently, that disorder can be hereditary.

by Anonymousreply 39July 18, 2023 7:31 PM

We really need to find a solution to the mental illness in this country and then take care of it early before anything bad happens.

by Anonymousreply 40July 18, 2023 7:37 PM

He looks not right

by Anonymousreply 41July 18, 2023 7:42 PM

Not R36, but the investigators and the DA may have went with what they could get, R37.

I personally don't think the dad put the kid up to anything. But, I do think he might have dismissed any signs of mental illness in the kid which led to the tragedy. I also think it is possible he used the delay in contacting the cops to advise the kid not to turn over anything to investigators. He probably told the kid it was for his own good, but in actuality the dad wanted to ensure the kid did not spill on anything that went on in that home, e.g., abuse, etc. Dad is LDS, appearances are EVERYTHING (which sounds laughable given the horrifying nature of the crime, but, Mormons gonna Mormon.) Something does stink with this whole thing, but who is to say what that is?

by Anonymousreply 42July 18, 2023 7:54 PM

TBF, I may be totally biased as a result of the hat Dad wears. It's cracking me up for some reason. Dad looks like he walked out of another decade.

Possibly for the same reason domestic abusers kill their children and spare the wives. So they live a lifetime in pain. Has the brother revealed anything else about the household?

by Anonymousreply 45July 18, 2023 8:21 PM

I don't care how shitty the father was. If you are not a psychopath, you can kill one person in the heat of the moment, or attempt suicide. You don't camp next to the death bodies of your family and wait for the next family member to shoot. I know people who grew up in abysmal circumstances. My partner was beaten regularly as a child and he's still not a psychopath. My parents survived the war and my grandparents POW camps, friends dying and hunger. Nothing excuses this behaviour and I even doubt it explains it.

by Anonymousreply 46July 18, 2023 8:27 PM

"Oh dear!" ing myself. "dead bodies" of course. (And probably 10 other typos.)

by Anonymousreply 47July 18, 2023 8:27 PM

Yes, thinking back to when I was 16, I would never in a million years have done that. I knew what was right or wrong when I was 10 years old.

by Anonymousreply 48July 18, 2023 9:28 PM

Did your partner's father wear that type of hat, R46? j/k

That's the thing, no one really knows what went on with this kid. His brother said he told his mom really dark things, so dark they should have sought help. Could be the kid is a psychopath. Could be he was beginning to show early signs of schizophrenia. Could be some other type of psychosis. Nothing excuses his behavior, true. He needs to be locked up until the end of his days.

I feel bad for his siblings. I have no sympathy for his parents if, IF, they ignored signs of signs of mental illness. I live in the U.S. so I know how hard it is to get mental health help. But people are responsible for their kids. The only silver lining to this whole episode is that at least this was limited to his family and he did not shoot up his school or some other public place.

by Anonymousreply 49July 18, 2023 10:08 PM

[QUOTE]The only silver lining to this whole episode is that at least this was limited to his family and he did not shoot up his school or some other public place.

Assuming that the same number of people die, how is this a 'silver lining'? Strange comment.

A lot of people trying to make mental illness fit but there have been no claims that he was mentally ill which you'd expect lawyers to use to try to mitigate his sentence - he's 19 now so there's been 3 years to find that out.

by Anonymousreply 63July 19, 2023 2:22 AM

I believe in gun control in part because not having one in my hand in a pivotal moment is why I have not committed murder.

I stood there, looking down at my mom, who was gardening and who had made an especially rotten remark to me (which I have long forgotten), thinking, “If I had a gun in my hand I’d fire a bullet into your skull.”

And she never knew nor guessed..

And then she left me an estate valued at over $500,000.00 when she died. When I had expected $1.00 and a snappy little “For reasons well known.”

Her response when I came out to her was, “So, what else are you going to do with your life?” Which is the sum total of our exchanges about my being gay.

I can see why the kid might’ve done the crime.

The fact that the brother blamed the father seems to indicate that there were some dark, hateful, psychologically abusive things happening in that house. The son who did the killing wanted the father to live so he could suffer without his wife and family. The killer should have killed himself. His mind must have been riddle with torture and pain before committing the crime. And now, who knows what goes on in his head.
