People Who Aren’t Funny

Jerry Seinfeld

Jay Leno

And that person who keeps posting as Liza, mocking her speech impediment.

by Anonymousreply 259March 25, 2023 11:02 PM

Jerry Seinfeld is funny. Just not laugh out loud funny. His sitcom is way funnier than his standup.

by Anonymousreply 1March 7, 2023 2:20 AM

Jerry Seinfeld is zero funny.

by Anonymousreply 2March 7, 2023 2:24 AM

Amy and Tina, I find them EXHAUSTING! Whoever thought they would have post SNL careers.

by Anonymousreply 3March 7, 2023 2:25 AM

Gutfeld! The ugliest turd in the punchbowl.

by Anonymousreply 4March 7, 2023 2:27 AM

Aziz Ansari.

I don't get how he was ever a thing.

by Anonymousreply 5March 7, 2023 2:27 AM

Agreed - Jay Leno was annoying, Jerry Seinfeld was not remotely funny.

by Anonymousreply 6March 7, 2023 2:28 AM

[quote]And that person who keeps posting as Liza, mocking her speech impediment.

Good grief, yes.

by Anonymousreply 7March 7, 2023 2:28 AM

Tiny Fey, my new name for this excruciating one note comedic writer. Never got her appeal. Tiny comes across as smug and annoying.

by Anonymousreply 8March 7, 2023 2:28 AM

Shpeesh impediment? What shpeesh impediment?

by Anonymousreply 9March 7, 2023 2:29 AM

The Liza trolls on DL.

by Anonymousreply 10March 7, 2023 2:29 AM

Trevor Noah.

by Anonymousreply 11March 7, 2023 2:31 AM

Jimmy Fallon should drop

by Anonymousreply 12March 7, 2023 2:32 AM

Steve Harvey is about as funny as an anal wart.

by Anonymousreply 13March 7, 2023 2:32 AM

A lot of the cute quips here have been destroyed by trolls.

The Oh dear, the tasteful friends, the Liza. Others.

by Anonymousreply 14March 7, 2023 2:33 AM

Larry David

by Anonymousreply 15March 7, 2023 2:33 AM

Amy and Tina are cringe.

They were on some awards show and had completely morphed into cutting edge "Here's Lucy" brand of humor. I was embarrassed for them, but seeing their smug faces I know they feel no shame!

by Anonymousreply 16March 7, 2023 2:35 AM

From the past: Soupy Sales and Red Skelton. I'm astonished they had careers and fans.

by Anonymousreply 17March 7, 2023 2:36 AM

Tracy Morgan

Katt Williams

by Anonymousreply 18March 7, 2023 2:36 AM

R4, I couldn't agree more. No conservative has ever been funny.

by Anonymousreply 19March 7, 2023 2:36 AM

Have you ever seen film clips of Fanny Brice?

Oy. When a girl isn't funny...

by Anonymousreply 20March 7, 2023 2:37 AM

Whoopi Goldberg

Sarah Silverman

Eddie Murphy

by Anonymousreply 21March 7, 2023 2:37 AM

Bob Hope

by Anonymousreply 22March 7, 2023 2:39 AM

R12 I’ve despised Jimmy from day one and find it shocking that his show has any audience whatsoever. This interview from Sunday was the nail in the coffin, what a smug, humorous-less twat he is, I’m surprised his SNL cast mates did rise up and kill him for his attitude of clean humor and how he can’t even say shit and fuck in a routine. Being subversive is foundational in humor, he might as well of just gone off and hosted Nickelodeon kids games shows with infantile and weak sense of humor.

R16 " Amy and Tina are cringe."

Oh, bless your heart.

by Anonymousreply 24March 7, 2023 2:40 AM

R23 "might as well of"

Even though I agree with what you've said, you must recognize what an atrocious error this is. You are intending to say "Might as well have" or perhaps "Might as well've" - but never, ever "well of."

Carry on.

by Anonymousreply 25March 7, 2023 2:42 AM

Jay Leno was very funny!

by Anonymousreply 26March 7, 2023 2:42 AM

Bill Maher

by Anonymousreply 27March 7, 2023 2:42 AM

Looking, R26

by Anonymousreply 28March 7, 2023 2:43 AM

R26 Omg, you poor thing

Beyond having no ability at humor and weirdly obsessed with his huge family and their situational comedy situations that apply to absolutely no one else, Jim Gaffigan is physically revolting and it’s painful to look at him and his voice is excruciating. He should play Alex Murdaugh in the Murdaugh Murders series, he has so much in common with him and I wouldn’t put it past him to someday become a family annihilator too, rather then let his children leave the family and threaten his source material for jokes.

by Anonymousreply 32March 7, 2023 2:45 AM

R1. Jerry was the least amusing person in his own sitcom.

And he was basically playing himself.

by Anonymousreply 33March 7, 2023 2:46 AM

R32 I agree with your sentiment, but your writing skills are atrocious.

by Anonymousreply 34March 7, 2023 2:47 AM

R25 You know what, I originally wrote “may” and went back and changed it to “might,” and I regret that.

by Anonymousreply 35March 7, 2023 2:47 AM

Seth Meyers Plus he is a closet case

by Anonymousreply 36March 7, 2023 2:48 AM

Hasan Minhaj. Who bombed hosting the 2023 Independant Spirit Awards 2 days ago. After a laugh free monologue, he tried to start a "YouTube meme" by having celebrities make "You Tube thumbnail faces" and not ONE celebrity wanted to participate. They actually CRAWLED AWAY from his idiocy. Watch the video in the link. He quickly tries to change the subject after humiliating himself with his failed bit. Unbelievable.

by Anonymousreply 40March 7, 2023 2:49 AM

I quite like Hasan and his online content can be quite funny.

Clearly he doesn't do live stuff nearly as well.

by Anonymousreply 41March 7, 2023 2:52 AM

This man, the ONLY thing funny about him is his name and face, otherwise he’s a wash. No wonder his wife sucked down piles of pills to get away from him, he must have been a complete embarrassment to to her. I’m still not convinced he didn’t murder her, he seems to have really enjoyed reveling in the limelight of her death.

I love Seinfeld. His humor just flowed so naturally thru every episode, and the ensemble cast perfectly complimented each other. I still watch reruns almost every day. This was and is a true comedy classic.

Ricky Gervais

by Anonymousreply 52March 7, 2023 3:08 AM

R49 I just started rewatching Seinfeld on Netflix and I’ve been enjoying it quite a bit. I started with season 2 and I watch at 1.25 speed, which puts it more at a clip with contemporary sitcoms with absolutely no distortion whatsoever. What I have a problem with is the picture quality, which is grainy and aged, as if it was filmed on those old kinescopes that they used to capture early TV shows. It’s as if they were VHS transfers from someone’s personal home collection. I can’t believe they didn’t clean it up digitally and make it more presentable. Is there some reason the quality is so low?

by Anonymousreply 53March 7, 2023 3:08 AM

They could go back and remaster it like a lot of older shows have been recently, but that's if there's a market for that.

by Anonymousreply 59March 7, 2023 3:16 AM

[quote]Listing his occupation as "comedian" should get him in trouble with the IRS.

Now that's funny.

by Anonymousreply 60March 7, 2023 3:16 AM

I don't know what to call it, I don't think it's cringe humor, but comedians whose 'schtick' is acting awkward or trying to make people feel uncomfortable. I'm thinking of Ziwe, Megan Stalter, and Jinx Monsoon's YouTube show Sketchy Queens.

by Anonymousreply 61March 7, 2023 3:17 AM

Maya Rudolph

by Anonymousreply 62March 7, 2023 3:25 AM

Debra Messing. Megan Mullally walking away with W&G was the easiest thing she ever did because Messing wasn’t funny.

R23 whatever you think of Fallon SNL is not subversive. It's fundamentally wimpy, easy target humor and that can't be blamed on Fallon solely. They're such cowards when it comes down to it. They even made Pete Davidson apologize to that Republican eye patch guy for a mild joke about him.

Another one for Ricky Gervais. He’s always so smug-looking, but at the same time so pathetically desperate for approval.

Also, having to see those dangly fangs and hear that horrible ear-piercing laugh is enough to invoke the Gods of Grease Fire.

by Anonymousreply 107March 8, 2023 1:22 AM

70% of working comedians are actually funny.

by Anonymousreply 108March 8, 2023 1:41 AM

Andrew Dice Clay.

And I know I'm going to get my wiglet pulled for this, but I'll just say it: Carol Burnett. (Sorry, Carol!)

Okay. Back to sharpening pencils until lunch.

by Anonymousreply 109March 8, 2023 2:34 AM

On his series, Jerry Seinfeld was smart enough to surround himself with excellent performers. Even the guest stars were good.

The series never stops being funny. I can watch an episode hundreds of times and still find something else going on in it to laugh about.

by Anonymousreply 110March 8, 2023 4:11 AM

R13 Steve Harvey is funny as a host to me but he’s standup is not funny.

by Anonymousreply 111March 8, 2023 8:18 PM

R15 Kat Williams is one of the most inherently, laugh out loud comics of all time. Die in a grease fire.

by Anonymousreply 113March 8, 2023 8:20 PM

Agreed a thousand percent, R91.

[quote] "Wanda Sykes, Paula Poundstone, Jeanene Garofolo"

I can see how one might think Poundstone, and even Garofolo aren't funny, R93. But not Wanda Sykes. She's hilarious.

[quote] "Conan O'Brien."

I disagree, R94. As a formerly insecure nerd, I adore him. I find his self-deprecating humor endearing. There's a juvenile quality that turns off a lot of people, and I understand. But he balances that with a genuinely curious, intelligent point of view. And that really is who he is as a person. At least, I have no reason to doubt it, after having watched decades of interviews. My favorite Conan stuff was on his NBC show in the 1990s.

Katt Williams really is hilarious. Milton Berle was never funny. But I enjoy Imogene Coca & Sid Caeser. And "Seinfeld" was definitely only funny because of Larry David, and the cast around Jerry. It's a shame the immediate supporting cast didn't get a bigger payout after. They more than deserved it.

by Anonymousreply 116March 8, 2023 8:43 PM

another vote for Sarah Silverman (“my farts smell bad teehee!”). I was never a huge fan of Sandra Bernhardt either although i wanted to like her, if that makes sense.

by Anonymousreply 117March 8, 2023 9:39 PM

With Liza it's far more than just a speech impediment... she's a mess!

by Anonymousreply 118March 8, 2023 10:18 PM

Chris Hardwick. I attempted to watch one of his standup specials and it was just awful. Full on cringe. He's a geeky little nerd and was trying to go on these x-rated rants about his sex life. It was juvenile to say the least.

Apparently he got temporarily suspended by AMC for purportedly being emotionally and physically abusive to one of his ex's.

by Anonymousreply 119March 8, 2023 10:22 PM

by Anonymousreply 127March 9, 2023 6:01 AM

Roseanne Barr's standup always was terrible. Obnoxious and stupid, like the time she "sang" the National Anthem. The writing on her show was really good, which is why she became so popular.

She does have good comic timing though, she was also very funny on The Office as Andy's agent. Again, she had good writing.

by Anonymousreply 128March 9, 2023 6:08 AM

[quote]Jerry Seinfeld is funny. Just not laugh out loud funny. His sitcom is way funnier than his standup.

We all know why now: Larry David was the reason Seinfeld was good, not Seinfeld.

I actually saw Jay Leno do stand-up when he was getting started. I had no idea who he was, but I friend of mine followed comedy and got tix. I thought he was very funny. His comedy was not nearly as safe as it had to be for the Tonight show. Although I do remember one hacky joke that he must have done at every club after asking someone local what was the sleaziest part of town. "Boy, went down to [sleaziest part of town] today. Sodom and Gomorrah are owed an apology!"

by Anonymousreply 138March 10, 2023 2:19 PM

Margaret Cho. Saw her concert film and was stony-faced through most of it . "I'm here to wash yo' vagina!" made the audience hysterical with laughter but I thought it was just stupid.

On the other hand I laughed a lot at her mothers answering machine message: "I think you gay......Only GAY screen calls!"

I like Robin Williams in small doses. I liked some of his standup specials though I remember one where he got the audience off-side and then was desperate to win them back. But his appearance on Inside the Actors Studio was him at his worst. He had a Beautiful Mind type brain but with a relentless motor like Mel Brooks.

by Anonymousreply 176March 11, 2023 5:52 AM

I never got Robin Williams. What were they all convulsed with laughter about? He was fine as a dramatic or light-comic actor in Jack Lemmon-type roles in movies. But his manic riffs and comedy just didn't reach me. Martin Lawrence? Nothing, for me. Eddie Murphy? Did not get what all the fuss was about. Or John Belusihi. And Ben Stiller...his parents were funny. What the appeal is of him, I don't know, I'm baffled. Seriously unfunny.

Johnny Carson was unobjectionable and charming but he was not exactly hilarious, to me, either. I remember friends saying they would "stay up for the monologue." It was okay, but nothing I couldn't skip.

Jessica Hahn was the original "Pick-me girl"; someone willing to do absolutely anything for male attention and validation, including acting like a complete whore. Then had the nerve to get mad whenever anyone actually called her a whore. While she was settling for that slug Kinison, he recorded a cover of the song Wild Thing, and Jessica played the title role in the music video.

Funnily enough, it's the standup segments that Seinfeld producers chose to intersperse into Seinfeld scenes during the first season of Seinfeld that cemented my opinion Jerry Seinfeld is not funny at all.

Something about his sensibility has to be funny, but Curb Your Enthusiasm makes it clear that 90 percent of what makes Seinfeld funny to me was Larry David's sensibility, and 0 percent of the standup I've seen Seinfeld do is funny to me.

Ricky Gervais is an unfunny piece of fat envy-driven shit and his writing is crap. I kept waiting for someone to punch him at that last awards show, but it's probably better that they simply ignored him altogether.

Andrew Dice Clay was (thank God) an unimaginative smear of engine grease.

Howard Stern is grotesque.

In terms of stand-up Rosie O'Donnell and Roseanne were both overrated, although they can be effective as actresses.

Jerry Seinfeld is so unfunny it is almost surreal. He's also a class-A asshole in real life.

Bob Hope seemed likable, but if there were two laughs to be had in his whole career I never found either of them.

Gallagher is a cunt.

I am unsure how Carrot Top ever had a second appearance on stage.

The Three Stooges and Abbott & Costello were too vicious to be funny. Laurel and Hardy worked because at the end of the day they seemed to like each other. I thought it was amusing to learn that they created their comic personas by imitating each other. Laurel was uptight and prissy and Hardy was a genial buffoon in real life.

I am swimming against the tide, but Larry David makes my flesh crawl. The smug, moneyed nihilism of it all. Ugh.

I adore Whoopi's '80s stand-up, think Sandra Bernhardt was fascinating, liked The Young Ones and Monty Python and will always laugh at two things: the beer-drinking scene in National Lampoon's Vacation (Anthony Michael Hall was one of the comic greats of his age) and the play of the rude mechanicals in A Midsummer Night's Dream (it doesn't matter who stages it, it always makes me laugh, in part because even if the staging is shit, it's supposed to be shit - maybe the most critic-proof sequence in the history of theater).

I hesitate to unilaterally declare that somebody is not funny.

There are many comic performers I don't particularly enjoy, but obviously there are people out there who do, so they're funny to somebody, just not to me.

Having said that, it seems that the internet consensus is that Brendan Schaub (former semi-successful MMA hottie fighter turned very successful podcaster turned stand-up comedian) may be the worst comic working today. And this comes not just from comedy fans, but from comedians themselves. Many are afraid to say it out loud, because Schaub is so tight with Joe Rogan, who wields a lot of power both in comedy and media. Rogan is the one who convinced Schaub he had what it takes to be a comic, so to criticize Schaub is a bit of a slap in the face to Rogan. But the reactions on comedy podcasts when Schaub's name is brought up is always hilarious, with a lot of subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) shade.

American here and I'm watching the new season of Great British Menu. There is a judge named Ed Gamble who is supposedly a comedian. He is not funny at all. He comes across as juvenile and his "humor" falls flat. But fellow Tom Kerridge laughs like he's busting his sides when Ed makes a joke. You can tell another judge, Nisha Kitona, doesn't think he's all that funny. Jane Harrocks, who played Bubble on Absolutely Fabulous, was a guest judge and you could tell she didn't think Ed was funny either. I don't get why they put him on the show.

Jerry's stand-up did not make him a zillionaire, his TV series did and that was mostly due to Larry David's writing and the excellent cast. His wealth is certainly not due to Jerry being a particularly funny comedian, let alone, due to his acting. I do wonder if the cast gets as much in residual payments as Jerry does.
