One Foot in the Grave (British sitcom 1990)

I recently discovered One Foot in the Grave and have been laughing so hard I almost blew a stomach staple. If you like similar britcoms such as Keeping Up Appearances, Vicar of Dibley, Waiting for God, Are You Being Served, Good Neighbors, etc., you’ll love Victor Meldrew and his long-suffering wife, Margaret.

It’s so damn dark!

I know the second Cosby show, the CBS one w/Madeline Kahn, was based loosely on this show.

Oh, wow, R2. I’ve seen Cosby but never put it together. One Foot in the Grave is far superior.

Thanks, OP, I'll check it out.

Noreen’s daughter Pauline from the Benidorm series was so familiar to me but I couldn’t figure out why. She’s the daughter of Annette Crosbie who played Margaret, the wife on OFITG. They don’t look so much alike but they sound very similar.

It was one of those comedies like MASH which had darker themes surrounding the comedy.

Love this series! I love how dark it is.

Caught it originally back in the late 80’s (right?) on PBS, bundled with their other “Sunday night britcom” programming. I never forgot the handful episodes I saw and was delighted to rent the DVDs decades later and explore the whole thing. It really stood up! It’s underrated.

I always think of the one where he wakes up on his backyard lounge chair with the fumigation clouds all around him, and thinks he’s died and gone to the afterlife.

I like the one where the police ask them to come in and ID a man they said hello to on a walk and later fell off a cliff. They reluctantly agree (they’re on holiday in an unfamiliar place), so they go to the morgue and the police pull out the big morgue drawer and it’s only a single foot under the sheet. That’s all they found. The police keep pestering them to ID the foot.
