I’m with a schmuck, but ugh, I care about him.

What should I do ?

When I came out at 18, thought it normal to have a partner. Over ten years, had two relationships. In therapy, learned "No Loaf Is Better Than a Half Loaf You Don't Want," which was the beginning of my self-respect. Remember, you're not half a person because you're not in a relationship.

What's wrong with him, OP? Define "schmuck."

People fail us all the time. We fail ourselves in addition to others. Work to resolve your issues or learn to accept some un changeable things. Relationships are compromise. Btw you May compromise and be selfless and they may not. Love isn’t the fairytale you see in tv. Whatever you choose you must accept your choice and decision whether you stay or go. Good luck.

I hear you, I was in love with a schmuck for 22 years before I finally left

If you think you can do better, leave.

If you think you love him and can make it work, stay.

Shit, or get off the pot, Mary!

OP, is he the guy in the “I’m With Stupid” t-shirt?

Work from love. GROW from love.

"What should I do?"

Stop making up stupid threads

David Richo has a great book, The Five Things You Cannot Change. The fifth one is for you, OP:

There are certain facts of life that we cannot change—the unavoidable "givens" of human existence: (1) everything changes and ends, (2) things do not always go according to plan, (3) life is not always fair, (4) pain is a part of life, and (5) people are not loving and loyal all the time.
