Because surgery is expensive and very few "straight" guys want a relationship with a transwoman.

A man's sex drive with a need to make a lot of money for upkeep of that body, plus the thrill from the validation through sex/dangerous sex.

Because they have a great love of humanity and sense of adventure.

Leaving aside good number of trans lack social and other skills to hold down any sort of job, you have what always has been, rampant discrimination.

Even passable trans (and know a few) who managed to find jobs lived in fear of being clocked. Sooner or later most if not all are then fun starts. More often than not they are fired for some reason or another.

Here in NYS you can be fired within first few weeks of employment for basically no reason at all. Many trans who are hired because they passed, show up one day and are told it's over.

Then you have problem that many trans don't have proper paperwork (documents that list their gender as "F" and whatever femme name they are using..). Certain things are required by federal law such as proof of being a US citizen or legal alien with a green card.

Above was one reason behind states and later federal government (starting under Obama) for getting rid of gender pronouns on federal papers, and or allowing people to have whatever they fucking feel like, not what's between their legs. Previously a trans could only get a temporary passport with "F" if she was travelling out of country to get surgery or whatever. Passports now have whatever gender applicant is "comfortable" using or in a recent case non-binary designation.

This being said there are trans who managed back and day and today to get themselves through school, college and find jobs. Some start their own businesses/are self employed (hairdresser, interior design/decorator, etc...).

Oh and other reason is what another poster stated; so many men who are into trans only want sex. So why not get paid I suppose working theory goes...

There are trans women working full-time, on a normal salary, at a local "lgbtq" non-profit who still prostitute on the side.

They talk openly about it in their podcast interviews.

Having a day job while also living a life of crime as it were is fairly common. Steady paycheck coming in takes some of the edge off having to "work". OTOH those who whore exclusively for a living may have to work hard for their money, this especially when times are lean and clients are few.

Steady pay coming in lessens exposure to being arrested, not that anyone bothers in NYC popping prossies anymore...

My two cents, FWIW. Taking dangerous hormones, having surgery, and cutting up your body is extremely drastic. And (not trying to be mean or transphobic here) I think a person would have to be pretty mentally disturbed to even want to do that. Considering that most trans people don’t have bottom surgery, they essentially become a man/woman hybrid. As a hybrid, you don’t really attract normal men, or you have to lie about yourself to try and get a normal man. And I don’t think that most people who want to do these things to themselves would usually be sane enough to have a real career. When you do see trans people working, it’s usually in the service industry. I’ve never seen a single trans person in college, grad school, or in a highly-paying professional career.

In the late '60s/early '70s, doctors and therapists who worked with trans people advised them to cut off everyone from their past (including their families) and start over in a new city where nobody knew them, à la the Witness Protection Program. Most doctors also wouldn't approve trans patients for transition and surgery if they weren't passable.
