Peter Berlin, who became a name in 70s San Francisco for wearing low rise jeans with a VPL, is still alive & well
He is in his 70s now and seems quite humble for someone who broke down barriers back in the 70s. He walked around the streets of S.F. in skin tight low-rise jeans, with a very visible VPL (before that was a thing like it is now). He was never in the closet and always openly gay, which meant all doors were closed to him, so he had to build his own career.
Very interesting man, from a poor aristocratic family in Germany, to photographer to pornographer.

He was quite an icon in his day.
Although he wanted every single man in SF to look at him and lust after him, he rarely had sex, which is how he survived the AIDS years.

R1 yes, because Peter Berlin was a character he created in his mind. He has said that when he would put on his skintight revealing low-rise pants with nothing under and walk around almost naked, he was playing a character. It’s almost like drag queens, who create an alternate persona and live them in real life, and then out of drag they go back to who they really are. Peter Berlin was a character and object of lust he played in real life.

He’s lucky he survived 70s America, walking around the way he did in public r3. Granted, S.F. had a lot of gay people and was the gay capital back then, which is probably why he moved there when he moved to the states.
Anywhere else he would have faced major issues. LA, NYC, Chicago etc. he would have been beaten.

He was interesting at the time because he didn't seem like the clones that urban gay ghettos were producing. The hair etc. seemed vaguely hippie and the pants surely weren't Levis' 501s. Ur eurotrash.
However, the notion that VPL was so barrier-breaking.... in the 70s? Seems like that's what 70s clothes did for all. Equal opportunity VPL.

R8 VPL like that was not a thing in the 70s. It really wasn’t. Bulge in the gay community, yes, but making sure you see The penis through the pants in public? No.

[quote] It is kind of amazing that Peter Berlin and Jeff Stryker survived the 80s plague.
Well, not when you know the reasons why.
Peter Berlin almost never actually had sex with anyone. He just paraded around the Castro looking like the whore of your 70s dreams. He was famous for that.
Jeff Stryker did not make a gay porn movie until 1986. By the time he was having gay sex (always, always as a top), he was wearing condoms.

Clothes were still very hippie-ish in the early 70s, which was Peter Berlin's big era. It wasn't until later in the decade that that look went out of style.

I had an odd, but memorable encounter with him almost 40 years ago at the historic 8709 bathhouse in West Hollywood. He had a room and we fooled around a bit. I wanted more, specifically to suck his beautiful thick cock. But he was not into oral or anal. He had an extra pair of ultra-thin leggings that he had me try on. He got off on having me pose and model while while wearing the see-through pants all while standing above him on the narrow cot in that little bathhouse room. He wanted me to sway and dance while playing with my dick. Eventually we started rubbing and got into frottage. I managed to work my head down to his cock and rubbed my face against it through his wafer-thin leggings. Eventually he came and it soaked through. I started to suck his cock and cum through the fabric. He seemed OK with that. I peeled down the waistband and began to lick up the cum that was on his thigh. I worked my way to his dick and he let me clean the cum off of it, allowing me to put the whole thing in my mouth. He stopped me before I could spend too much time on it. Dear god, it was delicious. It’s an experience I’m eternally grateful for, and one I’ll never forget.

No, it's really not. One went through the plague practically celibate. The other was a gay-for-pay performer who was a strict top. HIV among gay men was largely contracted through receptive anal sex - bottoming. If you weren't taking raw loads up your ass you probably weren't going to get it.

Born 1964 here, and I remember cute guys in tight pants in regular everyday life during the late 60s and into the 70s, especially the young college hippie crowd. I've always been an avid Crotch watcher since a wee gayling. My three older sisters had boyfriends in that vpl group, and my two older brothers were part of that vpl group that frequently did not wear underpants, and they're both straight. It was considered radical and rebellious at the time, and they did not want to conform to societal norms and be told what to do, etc. I was there during that time, and often saw it with my very own gay eye balls...

Again, pants being tight was the norm back then. Wearing them smaller than your actual size with no underwear on was not. Despite the person who came back and now was born in 1964 instead of 1950.

And, as I remember it, wearing "no underwear" was absolutely a hippie thing... it was "real, natural" and felt "free".... young guys before the plumbing starts leaking. I'd hazard to go commando at my age.

VPL was everywhere in the 70s. Even when I was in high school it was present because designer jeans like Britannia were making pants to show off your bulge.

Jaysus! It might be argued that there was more VPL in the ‘70s. Guys wore speedos, cut offs, and short shorts. As awful as double knit pants were they clung to the body.
You children have missed out on so much with your grandpa board shorts.

I have seared into my memory the exact proportions of several JHS and HS teachers' cocks. Jeans were THIN and TIGHT! I'm sure they wore no underwear, too. My teachers were the hipsters of the day. Many became teachers because it was a way out of Vietnam draft.

Some of them were hippies but not all. Others were just progressive liberals and some were trendy party people - the hippy teachers were still wearing nasty hippy clothes. Yak coats from their tours nepal, boots, classic jeans. The guys in the new thin designer jeans in the 70s were groomed and clean and going to discos and marrying sexy babe teachers. Thats why there junk was on display.
