Do These Things Have a Name?

I mean, other than "statue". I saw this pic on Reddit and couldn't believe I had forgotten all about these. They used to ubiquitous in the '70s, but I don't think I've seen any since. Rush of nostalgia, even though they're hideous.

Yes, they're called 'Disposables'

by Anonymousreply 1December 4, 2022 12:48 AM

I’ve got 10 tits - notice me, damnit!

by Anonymousreply 2December 4, 2022 12:50 AM

I believe they are Sillisculpts by Russ Berrie & Co. My aunt had some.

by Anonymousreply 3December 4, 2022 12:50 AM

BTW, Russ Berrie & Co invented the Troll Doll.

by Anonymousreply 4December 4, 2022 12:51 AM

Figurines?

by Anonymousreply 5December 4, 2022 12:52 AM

Thanks, R3. It looks like they can go for as much as $12!

by Anonymousreply 6December 4, 2022 12:56 AM

We had one with outstretched arms that said I LOVE YOU THIS MUCH.

Sort of the 1970s version of "Live - Laugh - Love."

by Anonymousreply 7December 4, 2022 1:07 AM

I forgot all about these! Thanks for sharing and bringing up a good memory of my grandparents' house. (My mother had much younger siblings, so they were in their teens when I was little. They had several of those in their rooms.)

by Anonymousreply 8December 4, 2022 1:11 AM

[quote]BTW, Russ Berrie & Co invented the Troll Doll.

Not true - Thomas Dam designed the original troll doll and they were sold under the names “Dam Things” and “Norfin.” The ones I remember from the 70s were knockoffs by Uneeda called “Wish-niks.” Russ Berrie’s unlicensed knockoffs of the Dam Troll were sold in the 90s.

by Anonymousreply 9December 4, 2022 1:16 AM

Figurines? God, they were everywhere in the 70s - I know I bought five or six for my dad.

by Anonymousreply 10December 4, 2022 1:49 AM

I TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT THESE! Yes, they were everywhere in the 70s!

by Anonymousreply 11December 4, 2022 1:52 AM

Thankfully, I don't remember them. The worst thing for me was the smiley face.

by Anonymousreply 12December 4, 2022 2:07 AM

The thing I vaguely remember about Russ Berrie statuettes was that some of them were “horny.”

by Anonymousreply 13December 4, 2022 2:08 AM

^^the one my dad had a woman with 10 tits and the caption said “notice me, damnit”

by Anonymousreply 14December 4, 2022 8:05 PM

So tacky!

by Anonymousreply 15December 4, 2022 8:08 PM

Russ Berrie is one of the greatest artistic minds of the 20th century.

Gargoyles without the menace. Or the sauce.

by Anonymousreply 23December 5, 2022 12:36 AM

OMG OP, great post. I used to see these everywhere growing up in the 1970's, especially in "card stores" - remember those? I recall seeing them in flea markets and garage sales in the early 1980's.....then they vanished from the world.

They are even more vile in retrospect.

by Anonymousreply 24December 5, 2022 12:41 AM

Gargoyles without the charm!

I remember that one.

Somebody bought my grandpa the one of an old man that said “ #1 Grandpa.”

by Anonymousreply 26December 5, 2022 1:16 AM

Lol, R7, my old eyes first read that as

[quote]We had one with outstretched anus that said I LOVE YOU THIS MUCH.

by Anonymousreply 27December 5, 2022 1:32 AM

[quote]We had one with outstretched arms that said I LOVE YOU THIS MUCH.

The version with the ashtray is even better because it looks like he’s standing next to a shallow grave.

by Anonymousreply 29December 5, 2022 1:44 AM

Our neighborhood drugstore sold these, including one reading "Sue the Bastards." I asked my mom what it meant and she just said it was vulgar and un-Christian.

by Anonymousreply 30December 5, 2022 1:46 AM

Fun Fact: People that had those little troll trophies usually had these hanging in the kitchen. Well did!

by Anonymousreply 31December 5, 2022 1:47 AM

I'd forgotten about those ugly things. My friends Mom had a collection of those things. Trolls or something.

by Anonymousreply 32December 5, 2022 1:49 AM

No, these were troll dolls.

As if they aren’t creepy enough, their plastic eyes fall out over time. I imagine putting one of these evil things in the incinerator, only to find it sitting on my dresser the next day.

They were called W&R Berries figurines.

by Anonymousreply 38December 5, 2022 8:49 AM

That Love is... crap was creepy.

by Anonymousreply 39December 5, 2022 1:11 PM

I briefly dated a guy who gave me one of these. I can’t remember what it said, it might’ve been one of the ‘someone loves you’ ones. This was around 1982…or so.

by Anonymousreply 40December 5, 2022 1:26 PM

As was the custom of that era, they were sprayed with a mysterious coating of 1970s grunge before leaving the factory.

by Anonymousreply 41December 6, 2022 6:54 AM

They're Friggadiggadiggas.

by Anonymousreply 42December 6, 2022 6:57 AM

Yes they have a name, UNWANTED.

by Anonymousreply 43December 6, 2022 7:33 AM

My grandmother had one of a guy tangled up in his fishing line, I don't remember what the inscription said, though.

by Anonymousreply 48December 6, 2022 8:40 PM

It looks very familiar, R45.

by Anonymousreply 49December 6, 2022 9:59 PM

R45 - it's not even mildly amusing, but the makers were geniuses. Everyone has an Uncle Jerry who likes to fish and who is impossible to buy for - perfect gift! They must have sold tens of thousands of these things.

OP, thanks. I forgot about these and Beany Babies and Trolls and Pet Rocks. What crap but someone made millions on them.

by Anonymousreply 53December 6, 2022 11:00 PM

Sillisculpts

by Anonymousreply 54December 6, 2022 11:58 PM

R52, I think that's a bird fixin' to do it's business on the chap below, hence...

by Anonymousreply 55December 7, 2022 1:35 AM

There aren’t many of these around because many were melted down in the great resin shortage of the early 00s. People were stealing these right and left the way they steal catalytic converters off of cars today.

by Anonymousreply 56December 7, 2022 2:34 AM

DL should start making their own line of these.

by Anonymousreply 57December 7, 2022 3:21 AM

Ha! This is so “1975 stationery store/gift shop.” Very big on Father’s Day.

by Anonymousreply 58December 7, 2022 3:38 AM

Sitting on a bookshelf, with a poster like this next to it
