What can you tell me about this area for a retired person? My family lives in NJ, about an hour from here. It’s much cheaper, cost of living wise from NJ, but I don’t know much about the area. Any thoughts or suggestions is appreciated.
Lehigh Valley, PA

It's beautiful in a lot of places, very Pennsylvania, hope your retired person doesn't have a lot of seasonal allergies.

No allergies, thankfully.

The hospital system is very strong as are the hospitals in Pennsylvania overall, and they have one of the second oldest populations after Florida so they are good with geriatrics. They also have extensive older adult living facilities, many run by all the strange, but caring, religious sects that Pennsylvania has acquired since William Penn’s time. Having been through it, when residences in these facilities run out of money the state system that takes over and covers then in the same facilities is quite impressive, they don’t get sent to the county poor home anymore. Just do your research when deciding.

There are a lot of colleges there - Lehigh, Muhlenberg and Lafayette are the big three, which is a lot for a fairly rural area.

Moravian College is also there in Bethlehem, which of course is a beautiful place to visit this time of year for the holidays and worth a trip to check out the area. The Moravian bookstore is billed as the oldest bookstore in America.
