She's got a serious mental illness. The kind of mental illness that makes online histrionics by people who write about their harrowing mental illnesses—social anxiety, usually, or body image issues—insignificant.

We all knew this.

She was being held against her will by the government of California and by family members who were *profiting* in the millions by holding her captive.

It was right to set her free of their greedy custody. Even if she is seriously mentally ill, that's not an excuse to imprison her against her will for her whole life, IMO.

But she is going to harm herself, yes. She will not thrive. The whole founding spirit of the United States is "give me freedom or give me death"—if I die by my own hand, that's OK, but being held captive is not OK.

So she has her freedom now. I think it is a better way for her to live. But she will be exploited by opportunistic predators and she will do absent-minded things that end up harming her. It's inevitable. It's a shame she is broadcasting it; however, maybe it will give us all some insight into what profound mental illness—not depression and anxiety that we generally are told about as mental illness—looks like. Her cognition, her thought processes, her emotional processing are interrupted and dysfunctional.

I kinda agree with the poster that Britney's decline should be allowed. People do need to understand the extent of a true mental illness with no sugarcoating. This could be used to help actually fund mental health care. By showing Britney is no different than that homeless person on the street. Many celebrities keep their illnesses under wraps and the phonies say "I have anxiety" when they are just entitled. Cases like Britney could help destigmatize real mental illness by showing even the rich and famous are afflicted.

In the first place, the fact that cancer is a really serious illness doesn't mean that pneumonia isn't also an illness. Anxiety/depression is in the DSM and is most definitely a mental illness. (Attention-seekers may claim they have it when they don't, but that is a completely separate issue.) Likewise, anorexia has a higher death rate than any other mental illness, so you can't dismiss all "body image issues" out of hand either.

As a non-American, I have always regarded "Give me liberty or give me death" as the kind of adolescent bullshit you'd expect from Holden Caulfield. All paranoics think they're in captivity, or would be if "they" caught them: should they all be running round unsupervised? ("Free people to be homeless beggars!") What if Spears harms someone else instead of herself? Is that still OK?

She has explicitly stated here that she has not "had real consciousness", ie been a responsible adult, for three years. That's her own admission. Ipso facto she should be under conservatorship. If she doesn't trust her father, by all means put her in the hands of the public guardian, or, since she's wealthy, have a reputable legal firm not associated with her father, and an independent accounting firm, oversee her needs, and get THEM audited every three years if you really want to make sure nobody's taking advantage.

I did describe whatever is wrong with Spears as "profound mental illness" that causes severe cognitive dysfunction and emotional instability as something different and, yes, more severe than clinical depression, anxiety and panic disorders, and mixed adjustment disorders.

Those disorders are real. They affect our daily lives and sometimes our livelihoods. They may even result in extreme cases in paranoia, transient psychotic episodes or suicide. Obviously, this is serious. Most cases respond to both cognitive-behavioral therapy and psychotropic medications. A minority of cases are not responsive to conventional pharmaceuticals but recent research shows they respond well to psychedelic therapies in many cases.

Britney Spears is a different case entirely. Evidence suggests she is truly dysfunctional, as in she cannot function as an independent adult and maintain basic self-care without a lot of intervention from others. She appears to conflate invented beliefs and misperceptions with reality (psychosis) and she fluctuates between appearing somewhat reasonable and being in an altered state that is natural to her but which is psychotic or akin to psychosis.

This is entirely different than common depression and anxiety. Most people—the vast majority of people—who suffer terribly from depression and anxiety still think rationally and logically and are able to functionally live independently.

Profound mental disorders like Spears's are true disorders.

Some extreme cases of depression and anxiety may cause true dysfunction, as well, but those are not the majority of cases and they still most often do not result in cognitive failure or limitation, or in truly uninhibited emotional displays.

I absolutely am not downplaying the seriousness of those disorders but I absolutely do take issue with media and politicians lumping all "mental illness" into one category, including profound psychotic disorders, autism spectrum disorders, personality disorders and situational depression and anxiety.

I know of a study of college students that determined "50 percent of college students" have an unmet mental illness. That's preposterous. And the conclusion was based on a survey that asked questions including things like, "Since you've been enrolled in college, have you at any time felt anxious or depressed?" Every college student feels both because they are under great academic pressure and in a socially challenging environment. And the New York Times published a feature that regurgitated the finding that half of all college students are mentally ill and in need of medication. That's false and reckless.

Spears's type of mental illness, whether it's endemic psychosis, the result of trauamatic abuses or years of medicating her, or even brain damage, is very, very different than depression that responds well to Zoloft or Wellbutrin.

I'd like to see what both of these two gigantic assclowns look like when they roll out of bed in the morning, before their multiple stylists/dressers/handlers/drug dealers get ahold of them to unleash on an unsuspecting public. I'm sure it's pretty damn frightening.

As terrible as her father was, she's clearly not competent, nor capable of managing her own affairs.

It's sad that, even for someone with a lot of money, there really isn't a safe option for someone to look out for you if your own family cannot be trusted.
