Pierre Renoir, the worst offender in the Western world. Fubsy, pink soft-core porno paintings for French millionaires.

In strictly numerical terms, it's growth number fell by nearly 600,000 down to a total of 904,000. By comparison, from 2000-2010 North Carolina had grown by 1,486,000.

Dublin, Ireland. Very expensive & not a beautiful European city. In Ireland, go to the countryside
Cruises (with the exception of smaller, boutique type cruise lines): hustle people around like cattle, lure them in with cheap fares only to charge them for excursions and watered down booze
by Anonymous | reply 101 | November 7, 2022 12:38 PM |
Dublin is an absolutely amazing city. Vibrant, great food and loads to do (from a tourist’s perspective.)
Irish people are very warm and it’s easy to get to know them. The Dutch on the other hand are polite, but will keep you at an arm’s length until they get to know you. For the people who said Amsterdam, it is a tougher nut to crack, but the city does offer some off the beaten track activities that are pretty great.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | November 7, 2022 1:08 PM |
^ Irish and great food are words that don’t go together, in any context. I love Ireland, great people, lovely countryside, sometimes oddly tepid beer but still top notch. Their food? Absolutely not. Unless you mean international cuisine served in restaurants. I’ve been to several high end restaurants which had very decent continental food.

Dublin is an amazing city, but it is a very expensive city & you're paying big bucks to stay in the city center. For that kind of $$, I'd just prefer to go elsewhere or go some place like Galway or Cork
by Anonymous | reply 111 | November 7, 2022 2:21 PM |
I was shocked at how ugly Dublin was. The vibe was great, the people and music were amazing, but the visual aspect of the place...would it kill them to plant a few trees?
Most cities in the UK were equally ugly. I would have put it down to damage during WWII, but the older buildings were no great shakes compared to what you see in France or Austria or Spain. Hell, most American cities have better architecture.

I've never heard RayBans ever called "douchey". WTF?
There are no logos on my three RayBans, I had prescription lenses put in. Actually, when I bought the RayBans, the lenses that were already in didn't have a logo. The logo might be a 'thing' with the later frames. In the 1990s, I bought vintage deadstock unworn RayBan frames.
The RayBans style itself can never be dated, its classic. RayBans sunglasses are a basic, cool, no-frills style.
Besides, there are just so many variations designers can come up with re eyeglass frames. Not to mention, many eyeglass frame styles always seem to come back in vogue. Younger generations always mine the past.

r340, some of my favorite music are pop songs from six decades ago. Still love those Phil Spector productions, Lesley Gore, and the Beach Boys. And along came the Beatles, the Stones, the Kinks, and the rest of the '60s. Then Linda Ronstadt in the '70s, and the Go-Gos in the '80s.
"Forgotten in a decade," my ass.
by Anonymous | reply 341 | November 27, 2022 4:31 PM |
R341, the Beatles, King and Stones are rock acts (the Beatles fall under both pop and rock if we are being fair) and I do like the other groups you mentioned. Face it--pop music has a shorter shelf-life than other genres. That's always how it's been. How many people today still listen to Paula Abdul? And that's someone who was very big in her time. People today don't even care about Janet and Madonna and the latter was A-list for three decades. Pop music is generally meant to be big in the moment. It dates ferociously. There are exceptions to this of course. But they are exceptions, not the rule.

R344, it is interesting how time can change what we consider pop vs not. I know The Beatles were deifnitely considered a pop act at the beginning but from Rubber Soul onwards I feel like they became more rock. Especially when you consider something like Helter Skelter.

r345 r346 When I started buying records in 1963, I don't remember if the category I shopped in was called pop or rock, but in time, post-Beatles, Stones, etc., it was either called rock or pop/rock, and I thought of the music I liked as rock for years. Then the internet happened, and I discovered, particularly in the Steve Hoffman audiophile forum, that the music I liked was considered pop by "real" rockers.
Those who thought of it as something other than rock were baby boomers—I'm one, too, so this isn't an anti-boomer rant—who preferred artists like Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, metal (including hair metal), and all the one-word named groups to be [italic]real[/italic] rock. Prog was rock. Yes and King Crimson counted. My favorite music, the Beach Boys, the Beatles, Linda Ronstadt, Warren Zevon, Neil Young, Paul Simon, was considered "pop" by these self-appointed cognoscenti.
I was fine that. And I remain fine with that, as I listen to "Make Me Feel Something" by Carly Simon (now "The Wives Are in Connecticut").
I also like classical and jazz.

R356, I am your Millennial twin. Well, sort of. And you are right, most Millennials definitely consider The Beatles and Stones rock acts. I think most people who grew up in the 60s or were adults then consider them pop and I think it actually makes sense considering their first hits were songs like "She Loves You" anbd "Love Me Do". But the group that made Sgt. Pepper, The White Album and Abbey Road is definitely a rock band. I love Rock, Jazz and Classical too (I actually just started getting into classical two days ago).

Mahler was Jewish, r362, though he converted to Catholicism to become conductor of the Vienna Opera. Wagner's wife Cosima was who he hoped to impress. Mahler had nothing to do with the Nazis, though Leonard Bernstein wrote in the 1960s that his sixth symphony foreshadowed the Holocaust.

R365, good to know, thanks for all the info!
by Anonymous | reply 366 | November 28, 2022 1:25 AM |
R362 Wagner didn’t inspire the Nazis. Hitler liked Wagner’s music and appropriated his body of work and him as a guiding artistic vision of antisemitism, racism, and Nazi German idealism. Wagner himself was arguably antisemitic, as reflected in a few of his compositions. Historians disagree about the extent of his beliefs. He wasn’t an amazing guy, probably was racist/antisemitic, but was most likely fairly average for a European man of his social background. I’m not minimizing it. Antisemitism and racism is odious. But Wagner was undeniably a seminal artistic force and his works are mostly impressive.
by Anonymous | reply 367 | November 28, 2022 1:37 AM |
^ should’ve phrased it differently, ‘Hitler…appropriated…his memory…” Wagner died in 1883. Hitler heard his music for the first time when he was a teenager, in the early part of the 20th Century.

[quote] People today don't even care about Janet and Madonna and the latter was A-list for three decades
That's not true at all. They still have devoted fanbases that keep them going, and in terms of things like general radio play or classic pop songs on streaming playlists, I come across their work being played in multiple places all the time. Their hits are still in constant rotation on various classic hits stations and playlists, along with those of folks like Michael, Prince, Whitney, George Michael, and plenty of others....dare i say more than I hear from the classic rock bands.
by Anonymous | reply 369 | November 28, 2022 2:07 AM |
R369, they may be played all the time on the radio but the younger generation doesn't care. The younger generation has minimal interest in 20th century pop divas but tons of interest in rock bands.
by Anonymous | reply 370 | November 28, 2022 2:12 AM |
R367, thank you for explaining all that. So many of these classical artists have more interesting backgrounds than the "stars" of today.
by Anonymous | reply 371 | November 28, 2022 2:14 AM |
R370 Nope. When I'm around younger people, they know who these artists are, and they know, at the very least, the top few signature hits of each artist. I don't see any more hardcore interest in rock bands than pop artists. That just the whole 'rock is better' superiority complex at play, as usual.
by Anonymous | reply 372 | November 28, 2022 2:17 AM |
R372, they have minimal interest in those artists. Spotify and youtube are proof of this. Madonna Janet have poor numbers on these sites while groups like Guns N Roses, AC/DC, Queen, Nirvana, etc. all do amazingly well. These are sites with global audiences so that's more proof than just one person's interaction.
by Anonymous | reply 373 | November 28, 2022 2:20 AM |
Vivaldi's Four Seasons has 240 million views on youtube. That is ~100 million more than Janet's most viewed video, Screm (her duet with Michael). That's a commentary on the longevity of the best classical music and the disposable nature of most pop.

R330 I love you!
by Anonymous | reply 375 | November 28, 2022 3:01 AM |
R373 R374 Measuring success by youtube/streaming is only one way to see things, and the perception will always be skewed. And that doesn't account for how many are constantly playing the same thing over and over. Lots of artists listed here, in various genres, are really more reflective of the physical sales eras, in which many of them dominated. A videos views on youtube don't account for how many times certain videos, by major popular artists in various genres, were in constant rotation for decades on various music television channels around the world. Also, some artists may have better streaming numbers not simply due to current popularity, but also how well their management or record company invests in promoting them on those platforms. Some of the biggest artists of all time, and their respective estates, aren't pushing their product on new platforms like they should be, but that doesn't negate their overall place in the bigger picture.

Who cares if that slop is not currently a "thing". My point was, it seemed mostly clueless people ate that shit, mostly Wasps, not people of Italian descent, especially Italian-Americans with great cooks in their families.
The same types of people who think Taco Bell is authentic Mexican food and think the Olive Garden serves authentic Italian food, would eat "Italian food" from a can!

My 4'9" maternal Italian grandmother should have been head of the FDA.
My mother made the mistake of stocking the cabinets with Spaghetti-OS, canned ravioli, and other American junk. When my grandmother noticed this, she did what any decent person would do and smacked my mother in the mouth and told her if she ever fed her grandchildren this junk again she would be truly sorry. From then on, that junk was kept in a storage room in the basement and the cans were immediately thrown into the outside trash bin.

Beefaroni was my favourite thing as a kid in the 80s. Tried it again a few year's ago for nostalgia's sake and almost gagged. The texture of the noodles is FOUL.

I used to love Beefaroni as a kid until I discovered a beetle in the can once. No more Chef for me!
by Anonymous | reply 426 | December 5, 2022 12:35 AM |
Isn't it funny how parents are supposed to take good care of their kids back in the day but were basically feeding us junk and shit out of a can?
by Anonymous | reply 427 | December 5, 2022 7:42 AM |
My mom who fed us beefaroni (in the 80s) was violently opposed to "junk" food and we weren't allowed to have it. It sounds weird now but she seemed to think only sugary things (candy, pop, cereal) were junky. We always had from-scratch suppers and breakfasts but canned food and instant ramen were OK for lunch and I don't really remember her thinking they were trashy.

I kind of like the taste of Spaghetti-O’s as an adult. I’ll have it once every five years or so. It’s nostalgic and tastes a lot better than Chef Boyardee or other canned pasta.

Rick Steves - he’s ruined several places in Europe like Cinque Terre and Regensberg by sending hordes of Americans in cargo shirts, white socks and collegiate logoware to overrun them. He peddles ‘off the beaten path’ to well trodden places.

I agree Heidi Klum is overrated as a model but she did make Project Runway what it became, considering Naomi Campbell turned it down
She could barely speak English the first season and most of her voice overs were obviously recorded later in a studio. One word she has difficulty with to this day is OPPORTUNITY

Mathematics. Everybody should be taught personal finance and even homemaking instead of that useless shit, especially Algebra and beyond.
Instead, make kids learn about the basic principles of philosophy and also comparative religion so they can see why they believe in sky fairies and that theirs is not "the one true Fairy"
