Can you speak a second, third, fourth, fifth, or sixth language?

Recently, I went to an ATM in Vancouver BC and the screen was presented in Chinese characters. There was no option to change it. I'm 48. Is it too late for me to learn to speak and read Mandarin? I might find Punjabi easier to learn.

I think that might be the least of your problems, OP.

by Anonymousreply 1August 18, 2022 7:56 AM

I speak five languages...

Russian: оставить деньги на комоде

Slovak: nechajte peniaze na komode

Arabic: اترك المال على الخزانة

Croatian: ostavi novac na komodi

English: leave the money on the dresser

A little Spanish, but I wish I’d learned French, because I don’t like Mexicans.

I don’t like the French either, come to think of it, but at least I would have gotten domestic social points.

Something that passes for fluent:

יידיש

עברית

English

Espanol

Something that passes for get the idea:

Italiano

Francais

Deutsch

I can read/write and know words/phrases:

Русский

I know words/phrases: عربي

Mandarin was next on my list, but it's tonal and I just couldn't quite catch it.

by Anonymousreply 4August 18, 2022 10:09 AM

aside from English, I can read, write, and speak some French

by Anonymousreply 5August 18, 2022 10:14 AM

Pungey is real classy-type!

by Anonymousreply 6August 18, 2022 10:17 AM

I learnt Latin at school, but I think my knowledge of it is a bit rusty.

I might get away now with just asking for the way to the station or nearest newsagent.

I have native fluency (reading, writing, speaking) in English and Spanish, can read French, and can understand spoken Portuguese. Latter two are pretty piecemeal but they’ve helped me before.

by Anonymousreply 8August 18, 2022 10:28 AM

Once I learned to read Russian, not only did Slavic languages - both those written in Cyrillic and in Latin characters - become easier to understand, but some Greek characters also became familiar. I was surprised at the number of Greek letters that made it into Cyrillic.

by Anonymousreply 9August 18, 2022 10:33 AM

How do you say “What are your rates, sir?” in Portuguese?

by Anonymousreply 10August 18, 2022 10:35 AM

Se você tem que perguntar, eu sou muito caro para você!

by Anonymousreply 11August 18, 2022 10:37 AM

Yes, I can.

Learning new languages is still fairly easy for me.

I’m considering German next.

by Anonymousreply 12August 18, 2022 10:40 AM

Thanks, r11.

by Anonymousreply 13August 18, 2022 10:43 AM

Snap, I ran r11 through Google translate.

W&W, you sly fox.

by Anonymousreply 14August 18, 2022 10:46 AM

Obrigado!!

by Anonymousreply 15August 18, 2022 10:50 AM

OP, that seems like a lot of work when you could just go to a different ATM.

Are you sure you have enough cash to hold you over until you've mastered the language?

by Anonymousreply 16August 18, 2022 10:58 AM

3 in a pinch.

by Anonymousreply 17August 18, 2022 11:07 AM

Are you foreigners trying to make us Americans look stupid in front of the other guests??

Because it is working! And I’m quite put out!

by Anonymousreply 18August 18, 2022 11:15 AM

R12 Learning German is not recommended because you will soon have to know Turkish and Arab speak in order to communicate there.

I studied Spanish in HS, and French in college, and started studying Italian right before the pandemic, which constrained my ability to go to classes. Thankfully, I was able to switch to a Zoom class. Mi piace parlare e ascoltare italiano.

by Anonymousreply 20August 18, 2022 11:43 AM

then how do you know it's Chinese character, and "Mandarin" to be specific, if you have never learned to read or speak any.

by Anonymousreply 21August 18, 2022 11:55 AM

English and as a second, Spanish.

Usually I can read French, Italian, and German well enough to understand the big picture and some details, and I can follow some conversations a bit or okay, even, depending.

My partner speaks five languages and I have a number of friends who speak 3 and 4, and a couple (diplomats) who know 6, 7, maybe more.

by Anonymousreply 22August 18, 2022 12:45 PM

Ebonics, Jive, Spanglish, Pig Latin, Gullah, and Esperanto. The latter is all one really needs. The rest were so I could trick better.

by Anonymousreply 23August 18, 2022 12:52 PM

R7, where do you ask those questions in Latin?

by Anonymousreply 24August 18, 2022 1:43 PM

Polari

by Anonymousreply 25August 18, 2022 1:46 PM

OP there was an option to change the language. You are just too stupid to find that option in Mandarin.

by Anonymousreply 26August 18, 2022 2:13 PM

This didn't happen. 0/10

by Anonymousreply 27August 18, 2022 2:28 PM

You mean you couldn't find the option to change it, OP.

by Anonymousreply 28August 18, 2022 3:19 PM

I'm a translator, so yes.

I speak the seven languages. Dollar, Canadian dollar, Euro, Ruble, Peso (just little speak. Mainly about donkey stuff), Bitcoin, and cocaine.

Last wife only speak two. Stupid whore. Hope she RIP.

by Anonymousreply 31August 18, 2022 9:19 PM

I speak the language of love.

by Anonymousreply 32August 18, 2022 9:24 PM

I’m fluent in German, and I can read and write French. My French speaking skills have atrophied somewhat though, after a longish period without any visits to France.

It’s the most irritating thing about learning languages: I need to keep using them or my knowledge degrades very quickly.

by Anonymousreply 33August 18, 2022 9:31 PM

I speak pig latin

by Anonymousreply 34August 18, 2022 9:49 PM

Pig latin in my 2nd language

I can read and play music (it's a language!) and read some French and Spanish. I can hunt and peck a little spoken Spanish, since my in-laws speak it.

That's about it.

by Anonymousreply 37August 18, 2022 9:53 PM

I can eat ass for hours!
