What is your favorite romance movie?

For me - Brief Encounter (1945)

I can just hear a few notes of the Rachmaninov piano concerto before I want to start blubbering all over again. (I know, mary)

R28 That review is hilarious! So many bon mots!

[quote] We’re nearly a quarter of the way into the film before Boray meets Helen Wright (Joan Crawford), a near-sighted, filthy rich, Peggy Guggenheim-style hostess/lush who falls hard for Boray after he saws his violin and insults her at one of her parties. “Bad manners, Mr. Boray,” she declares, “the infallible sign of talent!” Later, she takes him out to her favorite bar and asks, “Don’t you like martinis? They’re an acquired taste, like Ravel.” Those who are familiar with the once-lauded plays of Clifford Odets will find his hyperbolic, wondrously godawful style all over the dialogue (he co-wrote the script, stealing from his own play Golden Boy). Humoresque is jam-packed with classical music recitals, the usual cultural sauce Warner Bros. dribbled all over their ‘40s soap operas.

by Anonymousreply 33August 15, 2022 3:01 PM

I love that line r33, “Bad manners, Mr. Boray, an infallible sign of talent…”

I agree that some of the dialogue is godawful and Oscar Levant gives the right performance in the wrong movie…but the film is a delight to watch. I especially love the scene where there’s a closeup of Joan’s face while she’s listening to Garfield play the violin. She totally looks like she’s cumming!

by Anonymousreply 34August 15, 2022 3:17 PM

Two for the road. Audrey Hepburn and Albert finney make an odd but interesting couple. Love the setting in the south of France and the music (the score by Mancini).

I’m also partial to an affair to remember which I think is stunningly beautiful to look at.

I also like Love Is A Many-Splendored Thing (1955) w/ Jennifer Jones and William Holden. Not much to it but it's very sincere and well done.

Waterloo Bridge, the 1940 version. Love James Whale's original but it's more cynical than romantic. Leigh and Taylor and everyone surrounding them are superb. And there's not a dull moment in the movie; it just moves like lightning from one big moment to the next.

R31 = Faye Dunaway

My choice is God's Own Country

by Anonymousreply 44August 15, 2022 4:50 PM

r39, r43, did you know that Waterloo Bridge (1940) is absolutely cherished in China?

When MGM released its adaptation of the hit Broadway WWI drama “Waterloo Bridge” into American theaters in May 1940, it was generally well-received. When the film hit Chinese screens six months later, it proved a sensation. Part of the film’s success can be attributed to the appeal of its stars: Robert Taylor was a well-known actor, and Vivien Leigh was coming off the smash hit “Gone With the Wind.” But its story about true love amid a world at war also struck a chord with Chinese audiences, and within just a few months of its premiere, “Waterloo Bridge” had been turned into a Shaoxing opera, a Chinese-language film, and Shanghai’s first huju.

OP Come sit by me. I watched that film Brief Affair and found it poignant, too.

R32, Definitely “I know where I am going”, too. On the strength and conviction of Wendy Heller’s and Roger Livesey’s performances. So good.

Livesey was a really appealing presence on film, especially in The Entertainer.

by Anonymousreply 52August 15, 2022 5:48 PM

I know it’s an odd choice, but the closing scene of The Unholy Three, where Lon Cheney, on his way to prison, sets Lila Lee free to be with nerdy Elliot Nugent. It’s very sweet and uplifting.

by Anonymousreply 53August 15, 2022 5:59 PM

OP, I agree about Brief Encounter. The final scene between Celia and Trevor at the train station breaks my heart every time as well as her husband's trust and obliviousness at her attempted infidelity. The movie was remade with Robert DeNiro and Meryl Streep but I never saw it. There is no improving on this classic.

by Anonymousreply 54August 15, 2022 6:33 PM

R118 So why did William Inge rewrite the play (as Summer Brave) so that Hal and Madge don't end up together?

by Anonymousreply 122August 17, 2022 10:54 PM

When I was younger (I am female) I thought the ending of Picnic was perfect and romantic. When I got older I realized what a potentially hard disappointing life Hal and Madge had ahead of them. Now that I am in my 50s I TOTALLY understand Madge’s mom begging her not to waste her “YOUNG and PRETTY YEARS.” I was very pretty - it never occurs to you it doesn’t last long and more pretty young girls are nipping at your heels. ……. In Picnic you can hope that Madge and Hal have a real true love that will last and they can build a simple happy life together. ……… In “Summer Brave” Inge was cruel to Madge - in Picnic she left with Hal and you could at least HOPE they had a happy ending. …. In Summer Brave after humiliating her rich boyfriend Alan by having a pretty public one night affair with Hal - losing her virginity the night of Labor “Neewala,” - she stays home when Hal leaves town. Alan dumps her and she walks to work at the at the drugstore - now she as seen not as the “Great Beauty Madge” now she is “Madge the Town Slut - Damaged Goods.” … The same boys that admired and flirted with her at the beginning of the play - jeer and cat call at her at the end ……. I have loved Picnic since I was a teenager - is there anything sexier then the snare drum in Moonglow?

He says something at the end, when she’s sitting in the armchair at home, looking shellshocked, that sounds as if he’s gently (in that quiet, dignified, 20th C. It’s a glimmer of hope at the end of the film, that he knows her so well and stands by her and deeply loves her.

OP, I don't blame you. Rachmaninoff's 2nd piano concerto is an emotional roller coaster in and of itself. Do they use the entire concerto in the film?

by Anonymousreply 159August 19, 2022 1:55 AM

The excerpts from Rachmaninoff are very well edited into the rhythm of the movie— after all David Lean was a genius at capturing the drama of moment and editing out the dross.

People have tried and failed to match the moment in the music and the moment in the movie. It's impossible.

I wouldn't be surprised if the sequences are out of sequence.

The Bridges of Madison County. An older friend took me to see the film when it originally came to theaters. I remember being so moved, but, my friend felt even more so, he was very emotional; he openly weeped. I, being young and immature, felt uncomfortable and awkward in the presence of such an emotional older human. I could never tell my friend how overcome and overwhelmed I felt. I have watched and been extremely moved by the movie ever since. I always think of my friend, David and his raw emotions; he was truly moved and I am as well.

by Anonymousreply 165August 19, 2022 3:33 AM

#165 Bridges of Madison County clobbered me also. I saw when it came out in the nineties shortly after “The” relationship of my life ended. I instinctively knew I would never be happy like that again (unfortunately I was right):- something about those characters yearning for each other all of those years….as far as your emotional friend goes - you have to wonder how many of us carry those types of loves and disappoints and keep them hidden for years …

Summmertime with Katharine Hepburn and Rossano Brazzi. Discovered this film by accident a few years ago. I swooned when I saw Rossano on screen— an actor I was unfamiliar with and was swept away with this romantic summer time romance. I always fantasize about meeting someone like this when going on a vacation

by Anonymousreply 167August 19, 2022 9:57 AM

Hepburn is so unattractive it is amazing she was ever a movie star. All bones and nasal voice do not a beauty make.

Many have already been mentioned, but here are mine:

The English Patient Out of Africa Impromptu The French Lieutenant's Woman Sense and Sensibility- Ang Lee film Pride and Prejudice (2005) - prefer this film, I know it's not the majority opinion Persuasion (1995) Rebecca (1940) The Age of Innocence A Room with a View (Merchant Ivory film, not the miniseries) A Stolen Life Dark Victory Mr. Skeffington Humoresque Bridges of Madison County The Accidental Tourist Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994) - doomed romance / scifi (agree with The Fly assessment) Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) - Interview with a Vampire - obviously a romance between Louis and Lestat Great Expectations (1998)

{quote] I never knew about that remake of Brief Encounter. Thank you. I love the original and am looking forward to watching that remake. I didn't care for the one with DeNiro and Streep.

Brief Encounter was also remade for TV in the 70's with Burton and Loren.

by Anonymousreply 173August 19, 2022 7:21 PM

Ditto for Summertime. David Lean was some director huh?

Another Kim Novak darkish romance was Paddy C (can’t spell it and I’m on a little phone) “Middle Of the Night” - Kim is a young divorcee who falls for Frederic March her recently widowed much older boss. Shows the New York Garment District in the late 1950s. It very much has the look and slight melancholy of The Apartment.

by Anonymousreply 175August 19, 2022 9:52 PM

Kim's good in that, r175, in the role Gena Rowlands played on stage.

I just remembered my favorite movie when I was young: Bringing Up Baby. I adored Katherine and Cary; I thought they were beautiful and sophisticated and witty. What a fun romantic comedy! I must have watched it over 20 times as a child and at least that many as an adult. Cary Grant can do no wrong as a romantic lead in my opinion.

by Anonymousreply 177August 19, 2022 11:44 PM

A screwball comedy, not a romance movie.

by Anonymousreply 178August 20, 2022 12:30 PM

The Before Trilogy (Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Before Midnight) . Saw each movie as they were released and love to see how the relationship evolved. I was happy with just Before Sunrise alone (been in a one night stand myself that turned to a two year relationship) but to see the relationship evolved in the other films was great to watch over the years and amazing feat in filmmaking

by Anonymousreply 179August 20, 2022 12:56 PM

I agree with lots on this thread. Cannot pick a favorite. I thought recently that Timothy C’s portrayal of a young love struck fellow was very moving. Decades ago the last scene when Wood’s character visits Bud on his shoddy farm was very moving. Many more. The doomed love at the core of Sophie’s Choice is a big one. All I have to do to weep is hear the music from the film.

Doctor Zhivago: the Tonya parts not the Lara parts.

Tonya was an innocent; Lara was a big-busted, whiny-voiced, loose-lipped adulteress.

by Anonymousreply 181August 20, 2022 11:46 PM

I think because we know how screwy Debra Winger is we overlook that Officer and a Gentleman is a really romantic movie - they may not have liked each other but Winger and Richard Gere have great chemistry….. Actually - with all of the gay John Travolta stuff we hear - Urban Cowboy and his relationship with Sissy - Debra Winger takes me out of his usual Travolta thing, That is a pretty romantic movie, too.

by Anonymousreply 182August 21, 2022 4:13 AM

About Last Night (the original). I really liked that one at the time. Rob Lowe and Demi Moore, with Jim Belushi and Elizabeth Perkins.

R185 Sorry, that Wikipedia article is ridiculous. A Night At The Opera (Marx Bros.) is not a romance movie.

"Romantic action is a film that blend romance and action. Examples include Foreign Correspondent, The Best Years of Our Lives"

There's no action in The Best Years of Our Lives. And it would be a stretch to call it a "romance movie." Just because a movie has a love story in it doesn't mean it's a romance movie. Foreign Correspondent is suspense.

by Anonymousreply 186August 21, 2022 1:20 PM

Romantic action would me more like Charade, with Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. It's actually half romance movie, half suspense.

Titanic

by Anonymousreply 188August 22, 2022 4:49 PM

"Titanic" is also my favorite romance movie, only the 1953 version with Barbara Stanwyck and Clifton Webb.

by Anonymousreply 189August 22, 2022 6:32 PM

Invitation (1952). An introverted woman (Dorothy McGuire) with a heart condition discovers that her father (Louis Calhern) paid her popular, successful husband (Van Johnson) to marry her - when her romantic rival (Ruth Roman) lets the cat out of the bag.

I don't know whether it's a romance movie or a "women's picture" - is there a difference?
