"Physical" was a stupid song
I've been listebning to ONJ's hits, and I am surprised "Physical" was the biggest of them. It's just not a very good song, and it doesn't showcase her vocal gifts (particularly her remarkable control). the way better songs like "Magic" and "Hopelessly Devoted to You" do. Even her sugary early stuff like "Have You never Been mellow?" display her voice better and are arguably better songs.
Why was it such a big hit? was it just because of the sexy video?

It hit at exactly the right time in the culture, the 80's! Caught "the zeitgeist" perfectly, in a silly, sexy and universal way. Something for every demographic in the video, particularly. Brilliant - and probably most due to good luck. No one really thought this all through.

The sounds that came out of that woman's mouth sounded like stepping hard on a kitten.

It's a fun dance tune, no one is claiming it was high art. And the video is great.

Imagine that. A pop song being trivial and meaningless.

But there are good pop songs and there are bad pop songs. "Magic" is a great pop song.

It's not a bad song, but I don't think it's up there with Olivia's best.
Make a Move on Me and Love Make me Strong were the best songs from that album.
