Ellen could have mentioned the impact that Anne and her's relationship had on the LGBT community and how integral it was in terms of knocking down barriers to public acceptance. Regardless of how the relationship transpired in the long run, she should be proud of that moment. The reason she is where she is today is because of that time. And Anne was a part of that whether she wants to admit it or not.

The whole point of saying something nice about Anne isn’t praising Anne, it’s about saying something that communicates to her traumatized kids, who are dealing with their mother’s self destructive death, that their mother wasn’t nothing but trash. That she did have some good things about her too. They need to hear that, because right now she’s probably being trashed everywhere as a piece of shit, and they don’t need to hear that they’re the only ones that gave a shit about their mother. That’s very isolating and they don’t need to hear that now.

If Ellen couldn’t think of anything positive to say about Anne, get a PR person to write it, that’s what they’re for. Why not say, “I’m shocked to hear of the tragic death of Anne, I knew of her troubled past and how much it affected her, I hope now she is at rest.” Then talk about her kids and express condolences to them.
