$90 million and they aren't going to release it? That's nuts. Meanwhile, they are still trying to decide what to do about The Flash with crazy Ezra. It seems like at this point they might as well release it.
Who would have though that Discovery would be dumber than AT&T.

[quote] Studio insiders insist the decision was not driven by the quality of the film or the commitment of the filmmakers, but by the desire for the studio’s slate of DC features to be at a blockbuster scale.
They thought it looked too shabby?
What is really going on? Why is it economically more sensible to not release it at all - after it's being made already? Does this happen more frequently than we're aware of?

It might be an Ezra Miller casualty. Michael Keaton's Batman was going to appear in the Flash and then continue into this and then appear in Aquaman 2. Batgirl is cancelled and Battfleck replaced Keaton in A2, so maybe the Flash is next?

The entire DCEU is a mess.
There is no coherent vision. It's all a bunch of one-off desperation projects to make money.
Until they do, they'll never have a huge success like Endgame because it takes years of movies and setup to get that sort of payoff. They'll always just limp along and produce hit-and-miss movies and tv shows.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | August 2, 2022 10:34 PM |
Definitely among the strangest decisions to come out of Hollywood in recent memory. One can only presume the quality of the film was so bad that the studio decided it wasn’t worth the money it would take to reshoot it and just write off the entire production.

R8 From what I heard about the test screenings, it wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t amazing. Enjoyable, but not something to build the DCEU around. Zaslav is a penny-pincher and wants the tax write-off more than he wants to release a movie that wasn’t made under his leadership, so that was that.

Surely if they retooled it and released it on streaming, it would still be enough of a flop to get a tax write-off, but you'd also make some of your money back.

“ the filmmakers were told that it came down to a “purchase accounting” maneuver available to Warner Discovery because the company has changed hands, and also changed strategy from the previous regime. This opportunity expires in mid-August, said sources, and it allows Warner Bros Discovery to not have to carry the losses on its books at a time when the studio is trying to pare down $3 billion in debt across its divisions.”
My guess is that Flash is also able to take advantage of this write off and that film’s scrapping will be announced tomorrow.

Yes, but:
"The issue isn't played for laughs. They're pulling the same accounting "loophole" schenanigans with a $40-mill animated Scooby-Do movie which was almost finished.
It was a follow up to a successful Pay-Per-View Scooby-Do movie released in 2020 for those of you not up to the minute with animated releases.
It they're going to do the same with The Flash they'd better do it soon because I think the legal window for the "loophole" ends soon. But, also, The Flash has been slated+scheduled within their DC release plan for YEARS so filming an entirely new huge movie with a different lead to fit in the original sched would delay the release of everything behind it A WHILE.

The directors of scrapped movie Batgirl have slammed Warner Bros' decision to axe the 'awful' $100million film as they said they hoped fans will one day get to see it.
Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the shelved movie's directors, said they 'still can't believe' the shocking news that their creation was binned - and that they wished Batgirl could have been showed to fans across the world.
But God willing 'inshAllah' it will be one day, they said.
According to those who have seen the now-scrapped film, Michael Keaton's Batman was only featured in a few scenes — and did not serve as a mentor to Grace's Barbara Gordon, and the costumes were subpar.
'I'll say I'm not that surprised Batgirl got canceled as it features a woke Latino Batgirl and Barbara Gordon in a story that sounds downright awful,' Matt McGloin wrote for Cosmic Book News.
'Also that the costumes looked cheap, especially Keaton's Batman costume.'

by Anonymous | reply 93 | August 6, 2022 6:13 PM |
Seems like everyone's missed the explanation at R64's link -- it went WAY OVER the WOKE threshold, and the studio FINALLY LISTENED.
"But why was it cancelled so late in the day, and after so much time, money and resources had been spent on it?
Some have alleged the film may have been scrapped rather than released for tax reasons; Warner Bros can now claim Batgirl as a tax write-off — helping it recoup some of its costs elsewhere. However, that doesn't account for why the film was so bad in the first place.
And here there are certainly strong clues to suggest that Batgirl was only the latest in a long and disastrous line of Hollywood films that have prioritised politically correct values over entertainment. As Robin might say, Holy Woke, Batman!
The film was directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, young Moroccan-Belgians best known for the TV series Ms Marvel, about a Muslim Pakistani-American teenage girl who is bullied at school until she develops superpowers.
When Ms Marvel was released in June, it received a tsunami of abuse from comic book fans complaining about its unbearable wokeness.
(The series is made by Disney, so progressive nowadays that it applies racism warnings to the crows in Dumbo and offers a children's show — called 'Baymax!' — which features a scene in which a robot asks a transgender man what sort of sanitary product he should buy for a 12-year-old girl.)
Batgirl's screenplay was by Christina Hodson, the British writer of ultra-feminist film Birds Of Prey, accused by one critic of 'hating on men — all men . . . [and] dull to the point of numbing'.
Batgirl also featured a transgender character, Alysia Yeoh, Barbara Gordon's flatmate, played by the trans actor Ivory Aquino.
The appearance, critics say, is of a film putting its 'progressive' values ahead of all other concerns.
And not for the first time. Superhero films — normally somewhere audiences might go to escape our era's endless culture wars — have increasingly become major repositories of wokery.
In 2021, Marvel's mega-budget movie Eternals — starring Angelina Jolie, Kit Harington and Richard Madden — was panned by fans and critics alike as dull and preachy. It included Marvel's first gay superhero and its first deaf one.
Lightyear, a spin-off from Pixar's celebrated Toy Story film series, was expected to be one of the biggest movies of this summer. Instead, it bombed.
Critics complained that it substituted liberal virtue-signalling — Buzz Lightyear's commanding officer is a black lesbian and the film features the first same-sex kiss in a Pixar production — for the simple, unpoliticised joys of the original movies.
By contrast, this summer also saw the release of Top Gun: Maverick, a barnstorming reboot of the wildly popular 1986 film Top Gun, an action film about gung-ho American fighter pilots. It has provided a sharp rejoinder to Hollywood bosses who insist their increasingly right-on output is just a reaction to changing audience tastes and social mores.
Tom Cruise's new film proudly re-treads much the same ground as the original Boy's Own-style adventure, featuring virtually no women, no let-up in the shameless machismo and no scenes in which pilots question their sexuality or their patriotic devotion to U.S. firepower.
In short, it's almost joyfully off-message with 2020s Hollywood.
Perhaps as a result, it's been a monster hit with critics and at the box office — so far it's the highest-grossing film of the year and, remarkably, given his long history of making blockbusters, even of Cruise's career."

Hollywood needs to make some more white guy action movies. That seems to be the message from TGM. Also good movies need to be shown in theatres and not go straight to streaming. The Ron Howard film 13 Lives needed to be shown as a feature film first. It would have made some money there.
The gay, LatinX, trans etc. super hero film trope is getting tired.

The reasoning I heard was in addition to being abysmal, it was too expensive for online streaming, and way too cheap looking for theatrical release, so they're cutting their losses and writing it off.

As mentioned before, WB can't write it off as a tax reduction if they release it in any way, movie theater or streaming platform. The new CEO decided to cancel the project his predecessor started and use it as tax write off.

That's not really true, R119. They're able to write off all the movies they just pulled from the platform even though they've all been up there for varying periods of time. WHile it wouldn't be a 100% write down of what they spent, they could air it, claim it didn't bring in any new business (which would be ridiculous) and write off a good chunk of it. I think he's trying to send a message.

[Quote] I actually feel a bit bad for the main star, this was supposed to be her big break. Her response on Instagram was classy and good natured but it's got to be rough.
Now i'm wondering what will happen with the actress who plays Supergirl in the Flash movie. Even if she gets a positive reception, i doubt Sasha will get her own movie or show and they will just rehash the same old movie about Superman.

Obviously the entire world has been demanding a LatinX Supergirl from Columbia

R123 LatinX? Really?
by Anonymous | reply 124 | August 10, 2022 11:34 PM |
A lot of what gets called woke in comic based films came directly from the original comics.

I've always like Sasha Calle, but she doesn't look good in that Supergirl outfit.

She looks horrid!

R115, fine, live in complete denial. The #1 complaint from the preview audiences was the indeed and specifically the WOKE factor. Read the review(s) above that detailed the overwhelmingly negative reaction. People want to be entertained, not preached to.

Why don't they hire Beanie Feldstein - CGI out Leslie Grace and CGI Beanie into the movie!

A $90 million dollar write off?
That boggles the mind...
To think of all the other things they could have used this money for.
At the very least, I wish I'd taken home some leftovers from the craft services

Let's cast Ezra Miller as Batgirl!
by Anonymous | reply 134 | August 13, 2022 8:28 AM |
Warners should have offered me more money for the small role they wanted to pay me to briefly appear in the film.
After all, I would have got another Oscar nomination, made the film releasable and it would have been a big box office hit.
Oh well......

R131 it had nothing to do with being woke. One of the issues was that it looked cheap.

Yvone Craig applauds this decision from her Bat Perch in Heaven..Alicicia Silverstone is in a coma because she wasn't even offered the role.

They should cancel every film in development and start over

How bad was it? So many POS series and movies get released on streaming, this must be the worst thing ever.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | August 20, 2022 8:40 AM |
It.can't be much worse than all of the Marvel crap proliferating on Disney+. I can't wait until this comic book movie craze ends. And I like comic books, but with a few exceptions, they don't make for good cinema.
