A lot of films that have this reputation really got more of a mixed response than a thoroughly/mostly negative one. People will say Vertigo, The Shining, Blade Runner, etc., and all of those did have some high-profile pans (which get quoted to make the case that no one "got" them), but there was also appreciative notices, even raves.
