Films lambasted upon initial release that are now critically acclaimed

The Thing (1982). Huge critical and commercial failure that is now, justly, considered one of the greatest horror films ever made.

Pre-CGI effects hold very well in the present.

Hocus Pocus.

A lot of films that have this reputation really got more of a mixed response than a thoroughly/mostly negative one. People will say Vertigo, The Shining, Blade Runner, etc., and all of those did have some high-profile pans (which get quoted to make the case that no one "got" them), but there was also appreciative notices, even raves.
