The Colbys was good — and way better than Dynasty at the same time, with Linda Evans playing two characters (she could barely play one) and then Kristina’s heart transplant storyline… uh.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | June 24, 2022 8:34 AM |
R15 = Yeah. The Colbys wasn't awful and it was getting its footing while Dynasty was starting to flounder with the Rita storyline in 1985. I love Emma Samms as Holly Scorpio but she was just an awful choice to play Fallon.. She got amnesia because she wanted to have sex with Adam? wtf?...Publicity wise Rock Hudsons Aids crisis and Barbra Stanwycks instant hatred of doing the Colbys didn't help anything either.

R1, the UK spinoff (George and Mildred) of Man about the House (on which Three's Company is based), ran for three years and I think there was a feature length film.

The Tortellis (spun off from Cheers). Frazier it was NOT.

For its final season Dynasty made the wise choice to axe Linda Evans (she wanted more money) and bring in Stephanie Beacham as Alexis' main sparring partner. She was a huge improvement.
The first season of The Colbys actually got decent ratings, but it was too expensive to produce so they cancelled it after the second season.

R17 George & Mildred only finished after 4 years (5 seasons and a film) because Yootha Joyce died. Without Mildred it couldn't continue.

[italic] Blue Acres [/italic] : Hilarity ensues when Eb moves to Crabwell Corners and sets up a rural porn producing company with Mr. Haney.
[italic] The Beverly Fullbellies [/italic] : The chitlins made by an obese family from the Ozarks achieve nationwide popularity and they move to glamorous Beverly Hills to spend their wealth guided by their banker Mr. Drysdale.
[italic] Jock Strap Junction [/italic] : With Uncle Joe running the Shady Rest Gym and Bath House at an agricultural whistle stop, each week brings laughs as his nephews the three Bradley twinks deal with eccentric locals and interesting travelers. A highlight is the footage under the show's credits of the twinks bathing in the railroad water tank.

So many great (AKA terrible) examples of spin-offs here. I recall there being serious talk of a 'Jack & Karen' spin-off of 'Will & Grace'. Someone had clearly done their research on 'Flo', 'The Ropers', 'Joey', etc.

I think that probably would've worked. Will and Grace was basically Jack and Karen anyway.

God, I hated "Archie Bunker's Place." It was a desperate attempt to keep "All In The Family" going in some form and it didn't work at all. AITF should have ended when Sally Struthers and Rob Reiner left the show. The show was just a shell without them. And to keep it going without Edith? Unbelievable.

Its funny, because I was at USC during AITF and Norman Lear was a guest speaker. God love him, but he said no more than 5 years as there are no more stories to be told.
Of course 💰.

Flo was a mid-season replacement in the spring of 1980 and actually was a success, placing #7 in the season-ending ratings for the '79-'80 season and Polly Holliday received a Best Actress Emmy nomination; the following season, CBS kept moving the show to different nights and the ratings plummeted, dropping below the top 40, and the network pulled the plug.
