DeSantis Beating Trump in New Hampshire Poll of GOP Voters

by Anonymous | reply 2 | June 22, 2022 9:55 PM |
I guess the silver lining is that it will signal other Republicans that it's OK to ignore or defy Trump. Is DeSantis less prone to such egregious lying or insulting opponents like Trump? That alone would be an improvement.
It's amazing how his political fortunes have skyrocketed after winning by a hair. Was it his Covid defiance alone that did it? Does he ever pause to wonder if the highest death rate in the nation (even with his underreporting and fudged stats) was worth it?
WTF has happened to America? These people believe negligent homicide on a mass scale is a good thing.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | June 22, 2022 10:16 PM |
[quote]Does he ever pause to wonder if the highest death rate in the nation
I'm betting that's true irrespective of COVID.

Unfortunately, I feel like Trump is the lesser of two evils. DeSantis is dangerous. Buckle up gals.

Why is DeSantis worse than Dump? Pls explain.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | June 22, 2022 10:23 PM |
DeSantis isn't a moron and actually believes in the crap he pushes. Trump has zero actually beliefs in anything he says or does. DeSantis is also disciplined so he won't say stupid crap to turn off suburban republicans, also probably wouldn't attack other republicans in the house/senate. Basically a smarter Trump, which makes him a lot more dangerous. Just think of the crap Trump was able to pull while being a complete manchild idiot. Fear for the future if a smart Trump-like Republican ever wins.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | June 22, 2022 10:28 PM |
[quote]also probably wouldn't attack other republicans in the house/senate.
Well as long as he doesn't raise a mob to attack the house/senate, I'm thinking it's an improvement.

He'd just be smarter about staging a coup than Trump, not that he wouldn't do it.

What makes you think DeSantis is a wannabe dictator?
Dump has proven he is.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | June 22, 2022 10:36 PM |
There's a very good article on the rise of DeSantis and his shenanigans since 2018 in the latest New Yorker. Very eye opening.

I would love it if De Satan won the nomination and Trump then ran as an independent out of sheer spite. He would take enough votes that Biden or whoever replaced him would be likely to win.

Trump has the Qanon crazies and toothless hillbilly vote, DeSantis really is getting all the other Republicans lining up behind him. They want rid of Trump and want to win. Trump's a loser. Once he wins the primaries DeSantis will pick up the hillbillies. He's Reagan redux to Biden's Carter.
He's not a fascist however.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | June 22, 2022 11:03 PM |
The New Yorker profile paints DeSantis as brilliant, repellent and cold. He lacks warmth and has no time for social niceties, etiquette or empathy. I don't think he is Reagan redux for that reason. Although his relationships are transactional, like Trump's, he apparently doesn't share Trump's desperate need for approval or affection. I think he will win the nomination and unless his personality turns enough people off, he will win the presidency.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | June 22, 2022 11:06 PM |
I meant he's Reagan Redux in that it's likely he'll become another hero in Republican eyes. Winning two terms, and producing a "revolution" in economic and social polices.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | June 22, 2022 11:12 PM |
Republicans are moving on. Democrats are frozen in amber at November 8, 2016.
And you call republicans stupid?
by Anonymous | reply 29 | June 22, 2022 11:31 PM |
That is why so many Trump loyalists all of a sudden turn on him, because they want the Deplorables to rally behind DeSantis. I hope Trump will sabotage the GOP's efforts for the midterms and the presidential election in 2024.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | June 22, 2022 11:36 PM |
DeSantis is not worse than Trump. Only a Trump apologist would say that. DeSantis is closer to Mitch McConnell: he seems scary and freakish because you rarely see openly intelligent Republican politicians. He believes in awful policies, but they all do, they’re Republicans. Trump did not have policy goals. He didn’t care about government. He just wanted to destroy everything.

If that were t happen the MAGAT crowd wouldn't vote for him as they would consider him to be a traitor. They would vote for Trump if he ran as an independent, write him in if he didn't, or just not vote for DeSantis. They are full on ride or die for Trump.

Can anyone see any scenario whatsoever in which Trump will accept defeat gracefully and hand over his MAGA movement to DeSantis?
He’ll create hell. His only real loyalty is to his own ego. Wait until he gives DeSantis the full name-calling, crude-insult treatment. His acolytes will eat it up.
At this stage, Trump’s ego might be the Democrat’s greatest asset.

I’m a Floridian and think Ron Desantis presents the best chance for the GOP to win the White House.
Ron is smart, cold and calculating, despite the reports he does posses some charisma but not the typical politician type that’s slimy and overly nice.
I truly fear that he could win, he is ruthless and digs in for the kill like a pit bull.
Trump is an idiot that coasts by on his perceived wealth, it’s his business man persona that people like because they think he is a smart self made millionaire. But Trump is stupid and easily swayed which makes him less dangerous than Ron who still has some youthful looks to plaster on billboards and sell the old elephants a dream.

A Democrat in the White House says nothing about the makeup of the Justice Department, R55. Law enforcement is filled with rightwing lunatics, especially the FBI. The Florida FBI is teeming with Trump/DeSantis supporters, just like the New York FBI was rampant with Giuliani supporters.

Which is worse to be honest? Trump hasn’t declared war on homosexuality like DeSantis has. I’m no fan of the orange one but DeSantis seems truly hell bent on his conservative agenda. Trump used the wean minded right wing conservatives and militia groups to his advantage but DeSantis seems to truly believe their musings. The whole lot of them can catch Covid and suffer with the “fake virus” they claim isn’t real. No hospitals or help for them, let them choke on their own lies as they pass away.

by Anonymous | reply 60 | June 23, 2022 12:36 PM |
Trump will not slink off quietly.
Two scenarios:
1. Trump loses in a bitter contest, refuses to back DeSantis and his base sits the election out. Remember that many of his supporters never voted previously, or, if they did vote, actually voted for Democrats in the past. They like Trump, not the GOP
2. Trump's advisors somehow convince him not to run again and to hand the crown to DeSantis. But like all retired autocrats, Trump can't stand to see DerSantis get all the attention so undercuts him at every opportunity and his endorsement is lukewarm at best, which also leads Deplorables to sit this one out
It's also possible the DeSantis, who is politically savvy. tacks back to center once he's secured the GOP nomination. Whether he actually governs as a centrist is another story though....
by Anonymous | reply 61 | June 23, 2022 12:38 PM |
I don’t think DeSantis can win a national election. The last thing he and his operations need is more attention. He’s like Trump without the supposed charisma.

by Anonymous | reply 68 | June 23, 2022 1:18 PM |
"He's already being groomed to smooth his rough edges and to fake compassion like an Oscar winning actor."
Yeah, that won't work. You can't fake that shit unless you have some degree of facile charm, like George "I wanna have a beer with him" W Bush.
That said, his lack of personality won't hinder his chances one bit. People will see DeSantis as The Terminator. Cold, calculating, brutally efficient and 100% focused on his agenda. MAGA crazies will love that shit and neatly fall in line once his momentum really gets going.
And I feel horrible for Biden, who I truly think is a good man at heart who want's the best for this country. DeSantis will demolish him in the debates. He's whip smart on his feet and can flip any argument against him in his favor. I've been following his trajectory (in horror) for awhile--but seriously, read The New Yorker article to see what I'm talking about here. The man is awful. But sadly, talented.
The only spoiler I can see is if, like someone else mentioned, Trump decides to run as an independent and wreak chaos. Perhaps then we can squeak by. I'm not optimistic though.

He might actually be more thin skinned than Trump, or is maybe just more disciplined than Trump and has more follow-through at getting back at people who believes slighted him. Disney had some pretty luke warm criticism over the don't say gay legislation and he helped drive through legislation that punished them in a pretty quick fasion. He has no problem with overstepping his power with little pretext such as taking over the gerrymandering tasks from the legislature. I feel he would use his powers to go after and possibly imprison his enemies. Not that Trump is above that, but Desantis has an adult's attention span and would see his revenge through completion.

If Forrest Trump fails to win the nomination, he'll regard it as a betrayal. He'll badmouth DeSantis and the party and likely tell his supporters to not vote for him. Remember when he told the MAGATs in Georgia to not vote in the Senate runoff races? MAGATs will do whatever he says. He might even run as an independent, just as a big fuck you to the Republicans. Trump has too much baggage.
It would be hypocritical of people who relentlessly mocked Democrats for being dumb/arrogant enough to nominate Hillary in 2016 to then turn around and nominate Trump in 2024. He is the only person in the country who comes even close to being as despised as she is.

DeSantis doesn't have the kind of charisma that the Q-Anon and Trumpster types are attracted to. They're looking for sitcom crazy people willing to be outrageous because they're desperate for attention. DeSantis tries by doing things like getting into a fight with Disney, and that "stop the woke" bill, but he has no follow-through. He does something hateful and outrageous, then never mentions it again. He doesn't care if people love him or not. I just don't see him appealing to either the regular Republicans or the even more wackadoo far-right side.

The word "brilliant" is bandied about way too much these days.
Besides, if this fug carb faced creep truly believes in the policies he's pushing, policies which will not actually help his constituents, he isn't exactly brilliant in my eyes. It shows Carb Face only cares about the wealthy and corporations. Like Drumpf, this man only cares about being president, not actually helping anyone but himself and his cronies. Money and power are what most of these politicians care about.
Showing how evil, corrupt and smarmy you are has nothing to do with any sort of brilliance and leadership.
Politics shouldn't be a game, it's not a reality show, but over the past few years these GOP jerks have made it so, they are ruining so many peoples lives. Electing rancid braindead morons like MTG, and other uneducated imbeciles, is proof the US is heading down a very scary path.

They’re both horrible and should be silenced but Trumps easier to manipulate , he’s the dog that wants to be loved, he’s Homelander from The Boys TV SHow. Just tell him he’s the best and he will support whatever you say. The Deplorables will dump Trump very soon, because he can't give them the legitimacy of being racist pieces of shit anymore. Unless he paints himself (once again?) as a rogue revolutionist who is willing to drain the swamp (for real this time! Pinky swear!) of the political establishment.
