Florence Pugh cast as the Lead of new “East of Eden” adaptation
It is being written and executive produced by Zoe Kazan, Elia Kazan’s granddaughter.
I wonder if she is going to adapt the book and make the film closer to the book, or adapt her grandfather’s film, which only focused on the final part of the book.
This is a limited series so I assume it will be more like the book.

Didn't Jane Seymour already do this?

Gosh, I wonder how Zoe Kazan got ahead in Hollywood?
I bet she worked super hard.

R1 yes, 41 years ago. It’s ok to do it again after 41 years.

I remember in 2014 Gary Ross was writing a new adaptation and Jennifer Lawrence was cast as the lead. But things already began to sour with the public when it came to her so it got scrapped.

Starring Florence Pugh, Lilly Collins, and Ben Platt.

So are they gender-swapping the main roles in this new version? I.e., Florence Pugh and Lily Collins as Cal/ Callie and Aron/ Anne?

Jane Seymour already did it 40 years ago, and brilliantly.

r6, if you bothered to read the book, the main role is actually that of the psychopathic Cathy. Her role was stripped down for the movie to focus on the brothers, but the 1981 miniseries with Jane Seymour returned to Cathy as the focus.

Austin Butler MUST do this! As Elvis he said repeatedly that he wanted to make a "classic movie, like Jimmy Dean." Not too far from the actor's own dream, I'd bet.
I know how that all sounds, and I'm Marying myself! Anyway, I think it would be cool.

r7, one of the best TV performances I’ve ever seen. The book is one of my favorites. As good as the Elia Kazan/James Dean film is, it’s just part of the book. I think the ABC miniseries was much better. Florence Pugh has to be playing evil Cathy/Kate.

One of the most beautiful books I have ever read. I am a huge fan of Florence as an actor, so that casting makes me happy. And JLaw project being canceled is a relief..
Ben Platt, is not giving me joy at all. I loved him in The Politician, but not for this. I fear that Stranger Things kids are going to be cast in this and that will ruin it IMO.
I hope the role of Lee is cast well, he was my favorite character.
I suggest Andrew Garfield for Adam Trask.
Ethan Hawke for Samuel Trask.
if Florence ends up dropping out or s/t, would love to see Julia Garner play Cathy/Kate. Or Juno Temple, she is awesome.

Her performance in The Plot Against America was amazing. Her telephone call with Seldon was beyond award worthy.

Zoe only has a career because of the stool pigeon grandfather.

I think this is one of those times where no matter how much more prestigious and skilled the actress they cast to play Cathy is, she won't be able to match Jane Seymour, who just owned the role so completely for me.

I started reading the book one summer day when I was in high school and stayed up all night to finish it. Could not put it down. It's actually an epic covering three generations.

I’ve read the book twice. One of my absolute favorites. r19, I totally agree. That phone scene between Zoe’s character and Sheldon was the highlight for me in what is a damn good limited series. She should’ve got some award recognition for that.

It’s going to hard to to Lloyd Bridges as Sam Hamilton and Soon Tek Oh as Lee. Both were perfection. If they have to do this, I hope they consider Jeff Bridges to follow in his dad’s footsteps. I agree with whoever mentioned Juno Temple for Cathy.

R27
thank you that was me! I forget to sign my posts a lot
I am a huge fan of Juno Temple. She and Julia Garner killed it in Dirty John. Maybe Florence will have to drop out & Juno will get cast as Cathy.
Juno has done some excellent quirky films. The Brass Teapot (so good! for a silly movie, & I feel like people on TDL would enjoy it) I also really liked her in Meadowland & Horns. Horns was a great (disturbing) movie. Very out there. Daniel Radcliffe was also fabulous in it.
I learned of her because her father, filmmaker Julien Temple, was a great friend of The Clash & Joe Strummer. He made a marvelous film about Joe after his death. He took some of the great, early b&w films and stills of The Clash when they were just starting out. I love his work with The Clash, I am a devoted longtime (40+ years) fan & I am so thankful he caught them in the early days. Those films and photos are priceless.
