Not wanting to play down George Michael's impact but he was part of a movement of (mostly straight) men who were comfortable playing with their image and queering their look - Duran Duran, Human League, Spandau Ballet, ABC - along with women who didn't play up to expected feminine norms - Bananarama, Annie Lennox, Alison Moyet, The Belle Stars etc.

Lots of those acts were strong in the first half of the 80s but didn't manage to sell consistently afterwards. The two acts who did (George Michael and Eurythmics) turned out to be absolutely phenomenal songwriters as well as performers.

Boy George's ego and drug use was a problem, but Culture Club just didn't have any decent songs post 1984. He did well with a cover of Everything I Own in 1987, after the drugs scandal, but people just didn't care for him.
