Do they not hear others say the word and realize how aberrant their pronunciation is?
People who pronounce “Documentary” as “Doc-you-men-Terry”

Huh?

Just watched Rick Stengel pronounce “homogenous” as “ho-mo-genius” and I wanted to scream. Partly because it’s wrong, but more because he was describing Republicans.
There should be NO word used to describe Republicans that include the word “genius”.

OP you are a special person indeed.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 7, 2022 10:36 PM |
I agree OP. The extra syllable at the end is grating.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | June 7, 2022 10:43 PM |
Tomato/Tomahto - Potato/Potahto - Cunt/Coont, OP!
by Anonymous | reply 7 | June 7, 2022 11:02 PM |
Time to check in with an audiologist and a speech therapist, OP.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | June 7, 2022 11:19 PM |
OP pronounces it like Marlene Dietrich.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | June 7, 2022 11:24 PM |
R6, that is the correct American pronunciation.

Chip chip and cheerio! Allow me to introduce myself, Sir O. P. Poofington the Second, I am. I apologize for my predecessor's arrogance but in our well-regarded family, we pronounce words core-eckt-lee, we do. Let's talk body parts. There is the scroat-yum. The pehn-yees. And the ah-NOT AY-noose. The Ah-noose. As for documentary, one would pronounce that dock-uh-mentry. No "airy", no "you". Now, if you'll kindly excuse me, I see a large bollard blocking that parking lot and I simply must cram it forcefully up my tight ah-noose.

I still can't believe how many people on tv and in professional media say "impor'int", and "impor-TENT" because they can't do the glottal sound.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | June 8, 2022 3:48 AM |
But what if you’re ordering two men named Terry to dock?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | June 8, 2022 5:17 AM |
It's docu-men-tree
It's Feb-U-ary
It's li-berry

OP this is the pronunciation in parts of upstate for all words that end in -tary or -tery.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | June 22, 2022 5:28 AM |
Is OP retarded? Did he invent his own pronounciation?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 22, 2022 5:33 AM |
R12, how is it pronounced?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | June 22, 2022 7:25 AM |
Hi, I’m people
by Anonymous | reply 18 | June 22, 2022 9:40 AM |
Dockamennaree.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | June 22, 2022 10:04 AM |
I'm so sick of people making threads mocking New Yorkers. Fuck off Op, you self righteous cunt.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | June 22, 2022 10:13 AM |
It should be said “dock-u-men-ta-rie.”
by Anonymous | reply 22 | June 22, 2022 11:29 AM |
Sounds like how it should be pronounced?

R12, the same people who say Man-HA-in for Manhattan. Does someone here know the correct term for this speech problem?

Anderson Cooper says "Man-hadden".
Grrrrrrr.

The husband-and-wife podcasters here BOTH continuously pronounce documentary this way - undeterred by the correct pronunciation from a couple of the participants of the documentary ("Wrestle") being profiled. Maybe they got together over their mispronunciation of words. Or was it their shared love of soup?

[quote] Anderson Cooper says "Man-hadden".
No, he's saying Man-had-him. He wasn't speaking of the island.

As one (of so many, I’m sure) who fell victim to these vicious purveyors of misinformation about Gale Gordon’s status, I am resigned to ponder who might be available now for a “Gale Gordon”-type role.

R22 - Are you of the mind that "a" has only one sound when pronounced? BTW, which syllable are you stressing or is it all monotone?

Have you ever noticed that when these threads occur periodically, you have to say the multiple pronunciations out loud and sometimes aren't sure which version you actually use when unprompted?
Sometimes, both and neither sound or feel right when you actually have to concentrate and think about it.

I think Brits say it the weird way
