Why did Tom Bosley agree to play Amos Tupper on MSW

He was a fairly large TV star at the time. Why on earth did he settle for a supporting, occasional role as a dim-bulb Maine sheriff?

I think you overstate Bosley's popularity and castability. Physically he was big but otherwise . . .

OP, a recurring role on a hit TV series is a great gig. Easy work/shorter hours, good pay, and enhanced visibility. The fact that he headlined a previous show is no guarantee of any future work. You take it where you can get it.

Because David Doyle wasn’t available.

WTF is MSW? Bosley was good in The World of Henry Orient. I saw him in commercials for drop-shipping after Happy Days so he couldn't have been THAT big or he really needed the money.

Shut up r4, he was a fucking giant talent!

That’s “Tony Award Winner” Tom Bosley you’re talking about.

He did it to contain Angela Lansbury. Everywhere she went, people were murdered.

Money. He wasn't rich. Except for Henry Winkler and Ron Howard, the rest of the cast were paid very poorly by today's standards. Also, he put in enough time on MSW to keep his AFTRA benefits active.

He also was the spokesman for Glad trash bags for a long time. Btw, the role on MSW led to his role in The Father Dowling Mysteries, I believe it was created by the same peop.e.

You can hear it from the man himself.

He was a short, over 50 fat man in Hollywood. What else was he going to do?

by Anonymousreply 12June 7, 2022 11:31 AM

I was surprised he only did 19 episodes over four seasons. He made a big impression for people to think he was a regular. I wish he had been; I never cared for Ron Masak

by Anonymousreply 13June 7, 2022 11:43 AM

I always felt he batted for the gay team.

by Anonymousreply 14June 7, 2022 11:53 AM

He wanted to bang Anegla Lansberry very badly.

by Anonymousreply 15June 7, 2022 1:11 PM

Who wouldn't want to fuck Anegla?

He got the Murder, She Wrote gig right after Happy Days' cancellation, and segued from that into his own starring vehicle, Father Dowling Mysteries. He did pretty well for himself. Did you think he'd become a big action film star or something?
