[bold] ‘I just heard screams’[/bold]
Joe Smith, 23, and his friend were outside of Theatre of the Living Arts on South Street waiting for a staff member to return his phone when shots rang out about 10 feet from the venue right before midnight.
”Once it started I didn’t think it was going to stop,” said Smith, who said he immediately thought of recent shootings in Buffalo, N.Y. and Uvalde, Texas “There was guttural screaming. I just heard screams.”
Smith said he other weekend revelers ran down South Street to 4th and Bainbridge Streets amid mass panic and confusion. They waited for police to open access to the garage where they parked.

by Anonymousreply 1June 5, 2022 6:04 AM

Philly is worse than ever.

by Anonymousreply 2June 5, 2022 6:06 AM

We have to know how many died before we can act shocked and upset.

Please update.

TIA!

by Anonymousreply 3June 5, 2022 6:07 AM

The shooting scene is just blocks from the city’s Gayborhood, where streets and outdoor bars and restaurants were packed on a weather-perfect Saturday evening with revelers celebrating the 50th anniversary of Philadelphia’s first Gay Pride Day. A parade and festival are planned for Sunday.

by Anonymousreply 4June 5, 2022 6:07 AM

If these assholes focused on shooting politicians and their families, you can bet something would have been done by now.

by Anonymousreply 5June 5, 2022 6:09 AM

Another triumph!

by Anonymousreply 6June 5, 2022 6:11 AM

In addition to those 2 shot dead, another 40 were shot dead somewhere in America.

by Anonymousreply 7June 5, 2022 6:11 AM

South Street can be a bit menacing during the weeknights when it’s largely empty after 7:30 or so. This, on a Saturday? Almost unheard of.

by Anonymousreply 8June 5, 2022 6:12 AM

And… cue the comments that access to guns still isn’t the source of the problem with mass shootings in America.

Maybe the NRA and Republicans can start a new prime time game show, in the 7:30 slot, Who Got Shot Today. Guess where and how many! Thoughts and prayers! Pump out more guns! Wave the flag! Murica!

by Anonymousreply 9June 5, 2022 6:13 AM

Everything is working perfectly.

Guns are the #1 cause of death for children in the US. Republicans are the only ones standing in the way of reasonable gun control. They have blood on their hands. They deserve to be executed by firing squad.

by Anonymousreply 13June 5, 2022 6:23 AM

Philly is where one of the politicians was car jacked last year. The FBI had to get involved. The place has gone to shit with having an idiot mayor and a socialist DA who doesn’t prosecute. Even the American Bar Association wouldn’t support him.

R13, in Philly’s case, it’s leadership.
Republicans are the only ones standing in the way of reasonable gun control. They have blood on their hands. They deserve to be executed by firing squad.

R12 America has had 244 years of opportunities to institute gun control. It hasn't. You know why? See your post.

by Anonymousreply 17June 5, 2022 6:28 AM

They didn't have AR-15s 244 years ago, asshole.

by Anonymousreply 18June 5, 2022 6:32 AM

Has a hero emerged?

by Anonymousreply 19June 5, 2022 6:37 AM

R18 Which has absolutely NOTHING to do with the assertion in R17. But it does illustrate - if further illustration was needed - why Americans butcher each other with guns.

by Anonymousreply 20June 5, 2022 6:38 AM

Once upon a time people or gangs at least had gunfights where they mostly killed each other, for revenge, dominance, payback, or turf wars. Now we just have numerous people who want to go out and shoot at a lot of innocent strangers.

by Anonymousreply 21June 5, 2022 6:48 AM

Why did R17 edit out the face that:

Guns are the #1 cause of death for children in the US.

Oh, that's right, it doesn't serve R20 's agenda.

by Anonymousreply 22June 5, 2022 6:50 AM

This wouldn't have happened if the teachers had guns.

by Anonymousreply 23June 5, 2022 6:50 AM

Those kids deserved it.

by Anonymousreply 24June 5, 2022 6:52 AM

R22 Are you blind? Did you not see R17 referenced R12?

by Anonymousreply 25June 5, 2022 6:54 AM

I think most Americans need to just accept that we LIKE the violence. That includes many people on the left too, like the ones that were defending Will Smith for the slap and sticking up for his woman. Maybe it's because of the normalization of all of it.

by Anonymousreply 26June 5, 2022 6:54 AM

Are you R25 a piece of shit?

by Anonymousreply 27June 5, 2022 6:56 AM

R27 steps right up to prove yet again - as if more proof was necessary - how quickly discussion on an adult forum degenerates into a shoot the messenger because they have no response childish invective spewing match.

by Anonymousreply 28June 5, 2022 6:58 AM

Look, I'm a leftie, but what exactly are Democrats actually going to do about guns, to effectively end mass shootings? The Democrats have had majorities and haven't done shit. I'd be happy to defend them vs evil Republicans if I really believed they were passionately trying to bring this case to the people and bring an end to this. I mean we have many Democrats in power now, nationally and in the cities. So...

by Anonymousreply 29June 5, 2022 6:59 AM

by Anonymousreply 30June 5, 2022 6:59 AM

Why do Democrats, who so much in favor if gun control, insist on dismantling the police units that take guns off the street?

by Anonymousreply 39June 5, 2022 1:44 PM

Street parties in Philly inevitably lead to fights, which increasingly lead to gun fights.

by Anonymousreply 40June 5, 2022 1:46 PM

r29 Let me introduce you to my good friends Manchin, Sinema and the non-talking veto. You were either yesterday or you're not a "leftie". We're up to our balls in gun violence because of the Republicans.

Bullshit, R17. We've had a long history of sensible gun laws in this country, including very strict laws against concealed carry. For the first 100 years of its existence, the NRA supported responsible guns laws and restrictions. This free-for-all nonsense began in the late 20th Century.

by Anonymousreply 60June 5, 2022 3:21 PM

R53, that's your example? Jesus Christ, you wingnuts are idiots.

The NYPD Anti-Crime Unit, formerly the Plainclothes Unit, has undergone repeated "rebrandings" because they have this really bad habit of murdering unarmed people. It used to be called the Street Crimes Unit until they murdered Amadou Diallo. They never really get disbanded, though, the officers just get shuffled around. And the police budget keeps going up.

OF COURSE you'd choose this as an example of of Dems "disbanding" police--a unit that has been notorious for decades for police abuse, the subject of multiple federal investigations and lawsuits, and a total failure in terms of costs vs. "crime prevention."

by Anonymousreply 61June 5, 2022 3:28 PM

Are you suggesting the police should not go after illegal guns, R61?

by Anonymousreply 62June 5, 2022 3:34 PM

I've lived in extremely gun accessible places nearly all my life. 10 year olds got their first .22 and went deer hunting as a rite of passage and everyone had a shotgun or pistol to hand for home defense because there was no one coming in time to help you if someone meant you harm. What wasn't allowed to take root was lawlessness and drugs. We tolerated the drunks, but not much else. I don't know anyone who has been a victim of a gun violence.

by Anonymousreply 63June 5, 2022 3:42 PM

Don't believe the PC shit you see on Law and Order: SVU--most police departments are filled with jackbooted Nazi thugs who want to bust heads of black and brown people. Does that mean that all police officers are bad? No, but there is a huge problem throughout this country. And the militarization of police from the surplus of leftover paramilitary gear from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars made the problem exponentially worse.

by Anonymousreply 64June 5, 2022 3:42 PM

The obvious answer is to teach children to smear their classmates blood all over themselves and play dead while gumen freely walk our schools and streets with their God given AR-15s.

by Anonymousreply 65June 5, 2022 3:57 PM

After Uvalde, how can anyone say the police are the solution to this problem? Police SUCK! They arrested parents of the victims.

by Anonymousreply 66June 5, 2022 4:00 PM

What illegal guns were they going after when they murdered Diallo or Eric Garner, R62?

The answer, of course, is none. They had a return rate of something like 0.01% of guns seized per illegal stop and frisk.

by Anonymousreply 67June 5, 2022 4:12 PM

^Oh, sorry, how unfair of me. 780 guns seized in 2011 after 685,724 stops. So a gun was seized in 0.1% of stops.

Meanwhile, they had a better rate of return in the year after the Street Crimes Unit was "disbanded." In 2003, 604 guns were seized after 160,851 stops--0.3%

R29 Eliminating the ability to legally purchase rapid fire weapons with high capacity magazines would cut down on the number of people killed or hurt in mass shootings, perhaps also the number of such incidents themselves. Raising the age to purchase legitimate hunting weapons to 21 - or better yet, 25 - would eliminate many young shooters.

by Anonymousreply 69June 5, 2022 4:19 PM
is your typical, reactionary Christo-fascist, replete with faux patriotism and faux religious piety.

R63 none of your little trip down memory lane is comparable to easily obtainable AR-15s and similar high capacity semi-automatic weapons flooding the market.

There are at least 15 cities with higher homicide rates than Philadelphia. Most of them do not have "socialist DAs." Murder rates have gone up at higher rates in some areas with old school "tough on crime" DAs or mayors than ones with comparatively progressive ones.

[quotes]On the other hand, tough-on-crime DAs get to play by a different script. Ganeva highlights Michael Hestrin, the DA of Riverside, who “raked in $149,300 from law enforcement groups during his 2014 campaign and thousands more during his reelection in 2018.” She points out, “Yet despite his commitment to aggressive prosecutions, the crime rate in Riverside is higher than in 83.9 percent of US cities.” “In the last 5 years Riverside has seen rise of violent crime and decline of property crime,” according to the City-Data crime index. Yet, “When tragedy strikes under Hestrin’s watch, no media outlets blame his policies—a perfect illustration of status quo bias.”

Gee, I know. We have a President, one of the most powerful people on the planet, who's a Democrat. How could he stand up to Kyrsten Sinema, though? She has so much more power than the POTUS. Yes, this is sarcasm. You don't think a powerful POTUS could bring pressure to bear against both Sinema and Manchin? I would see to it that they get zero support from the party until they fall in line, I would threaten them in various political ways. Biden is probably glad they're there, then he has an excuse for not doing anything while talking a good game.

“ A shooting near a Tennessee nightclub early Sunday led to three deaths and 14 people suffering gunshot wounds and other injuries, police said.

Fourteen people were hit by gunfire and three were hit by vehicles while trying to flee the scene, Chattanooga Police Chief Celeste Murphy said during a press conference. Two people died from gunshot wounds and one person died after being hit by a vehicle, Murphy said. Sixteen of the victims were adults and one was a juvenile and several remained in critical condition, she said.”

R86 I agree Biden and the Dems can do more, but we cannot let the GOP off the hook here. Do a bar crawl, hang out ,meet people ,eat some good food. No more. Now its fights and shooting and assaults. No,it isnt white people either. I just stay away from them. That being said ,I do not judge all by the actions of a few,and I feel terrible for the hard working decent black folks who are just as much a victim of these fucking thugs as the rest of the country.

Nigeria shows them to not be so merciful.

Gunmen opened fire on worshippers and detonated explosives at a Catholic church in southwestern Nigeria on Sunday, leaving dozens feared dead, state lawmakers said.

The attackers targeted the St. Francis Catholic Church in Ondo state just as the worshippers gathered on Pentecost Sunday, legislator Ogunmolasuyi Oluwole said. Among the dead were many children, he said.

The presiding priest was abducted as well, said Adelegbe Timileyin, who represents the Owo area in Nigeria’s lower legislative chamber.

“Our hearts are heavy,” Ondo Governor Rotimi Akeredolu tweeted Sunday. “Our peace and tranquility have been attacked by the enemies of the people.”

Authorities did not immediately release an official death toll. Timileyin said at least 50 people had been killed, though others put the figure higher. Videos appearing to be from the scene of the attack showed church worshippers lying in pools of blood while people around them wailed.

I will ask if every decision we make helps those who have been disenfranchised, red-lined and flat-out ignored for way too long. I will look through each and every program in city government and make the changes necessary to ensure that government is working for those people."[63]

I can’t speak for other cities but Krasner and his office are terrible at prosecuting gun offenses. Krasner never takes the blame though, he deflects it to the police and the judges (who, admittedly, are also a big problem. However, Philadelphia cannot seem to produce viable alternative candidates to the democrat machine and add apathetic voters and it’s how Krasner is still in office.

St. Louis high murder rate (and high crime rate, in general) goes back to the 1950's and 1960's, which partially explains why the city's population has shrunk by 2/3 since 1950 (850K in 1950 vs. <300K today). St. Louis never had riots like Newark or Detroit, but it's decay and abandonment has been far worse than anything a riot could produce, including the Watts riots in L.A.

If you ride to the top of the Gateway Arch, and look north from the western viewing platform, you will see vast areas of empty land. One of those empty spaces is the former site of the infamous Pruitt-Igoe housing project, vacant since the last building was blown up in 1976. (Its now an urban forest and dumping ground). Site development and construction of PI began in 1953, so it existed for 24 years. The site has sat vacant for 46 years, almost twice as long as its life.

Republicans are more concerned about offending the gun lobbyists and the blood money they receive for their votes. They have no conscience weighing the life of a child against the money received, money and greed always wins.

The mass incarceration of the 1990s led to decreased crime. With fewer people in prison there will be more crime.I’m not saying it’s right but that’s the reality. What Repubs will bring to the cities is more people in prison which will inevitably bring crime down. There really is no other solution that I see.
Every city listed with murder rates through the roof are led by bleeding heart liberals. They can’t govern. And guess which group is committing the murders.

Reminds me of this quote from the musical EVITA: "Why try to govern a country when you can become a saint?"

by Anonymousreply 124June 6, 2022 7:47 AM
No community commits more crime than blacks. They’re targeted because they’re the criminals. They commit the majority of murder in Philly and are only 13% of the population. They also hate gays, Asians, and Jews with a passion, so spare us.

Remember that urban legend that was going around in the '80s/'90s regarding a group of black friends who entered a convenience store. The Asian clerk immediately became suspicious of them and kept an eye on them the whole time. Then a group of white friends enter and the Asian clerk is relieved. The black group pays for their things and departs. Meanwhile, the Asian clerk turns to the white group and says, "I'm so glad you guys came!" Just then, one of the white guys pulls out a gun and they rob the place.

The moral of the story was supposed to be "Don't profile black people," but it's hard not to when they are more likely to rob/murder than any other group in the U.S.

Many innocent people who are nearby, or in a crowded area, just end up injured or killed. God help us if we're near any fight, or in traffic when someone cuts another car off...or if by mistake, you bump into the wrong person. Angry and volatile America...

by Anonymousreply 132June 6, 2022 1:26 PM

Love all the finger pointing in this thread. Well-intentioned, I guess, but also kinda naive. Shootings like the one in Philly are more common than the orchestrated mass shooting of Uvalde & Buffalo & are typically perpetuated with guns that are acquired illegally, having absolutely record. Unfortunately most of those victims this past weekend alone were killed/injured by such firearms. No laws passed or depth of background checking will make a dent in that statictic.

A Wisconsin man is facing six counts of felony murder for allegedly killing six people during a botched robbery at a Milwaukee duplex in January.

Travis Lamar Birkley, 34, was arraigned on the charges Sunday and is being held on a $1 million bail.

The six victims were found at a home in north Milwaukee on Jan. 23, though investigators believe that they were killed three days earlier.

Police previously identified the deceased as Charles Hardy, 42; Caleb Jordan, 23; Javoni Liddell, 31; Donta “Michael” Williams, 44; Michelle Williams, 49; and 43-year-old Donald Smith.

A confidential witness told investigators that Birkley admitted to killing all six victims during a “robbery gone bad” with his cousin, according to a complaint obtained by Fox 6 Milwaukee.

A witness also told police that they saw Birkley with cash, guns, and drugs after the murders that belonged to a victim, according to the complaint.

Two people have been arrested in connection with a bloody mass shooting that left three dead and at least 11 injured in Philadelphia over the weekend, a report said Monday.

𝑹𝒂𝒔𝒉𝒂𝒘𝒏 𝑽𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒆𝒏 was busted at around 8 p.m. and charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault in connection with Saturday night’s mayhem, according to Fox 29.

𝑸𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒏 𝑮𝒂𝒓𝒏𝒆𝒓 was also charged with aggravated assault and assault on law enforcement officers while recovering in the hospital after being shot by police.

Authorities believe the first shot was fired by 34-year-old Gregory Jackson and critically wounded another man. The second gunman managed to return fire, and the two exchanged 17 rounds in a hail of gunfire.

Jackson was struck and killed in the melee.

South Streets straddles the Society Hill and Queen Village neighborhoods, R137, both very nice, heavily residential areas. In the past few years, South Street has become a gathering point (and flash point) for young blacks. Nothing wrong with that, until they start brandishing their guns at the slightest provocation. i.e. "he/she/it disrespected me" when the guns come out blazing, or an on-line feud escalates to attempted murder.

The suspect is described as a male in his late teens. He was seen wearing a COVID-style mask and a black hooded shirt with distinctive markings. Video shows him walking into a convenience store and standing near 3rd Street about 20 minutes before the gunfire began. Police say he was armed with a .40 caliber handgun.

Two people were killed, along with an alleged gunman, in the mass shooting and 11 others were wounded by gunfire and another victim was hurt by shattered glass.

Two suspects have already been taken into custody — 34-year-old Rashaan Vereen and 18-year-old Quran Garner.

Investigators confirmed to Eyewitness News that a fight between three men was the start of trouble.

The District Attorney’s Office says a man identified as Greg Jackson in video obtained by Eyewitness News shoots at a man identified as Micah Townes. Townes then fired back at Jackson. Jackson is then pronounced dead at the scene.

Both men were licensed to carry.

“He carries to protect himself. I don’t blame him. You see what happened?” said Donnell, Townes’ next-door neighbor.

Donnell saw the 23-year-old college student as he was leaving to head out that night to celebrate his birthday.

“I told him be careful out tonight. He called me Unc. He said ‘Unc, I’ll have a good time’ and when I didn’t see him out here in the morning — because we’re usually out here in the morning relaxing and having a good time in the morning — I knew it was him,” he said.

Now, he’s praying for his friend and an end to the violence.

“I don’t believe in the City of Brotherly Love because they’re out here killing each other every single day,” Donnell said.

Police say they saw Garner firing down from 3rd and American Streets in the direction of South Street. A police officer engaged Garner, fired upon Garner and wounded him in the hand.

A teenager died and another was hospitalized with a wound to the head following what is believed to have been a drive-by shooting in the Summerdale neighborhood of lower Northeast Philadelphia Friday afternoon, police said.

The shooting happened around 4 p.m. on the 800 block of Bridge Street. The boy, identified by his family as Robert "Bobby" Yocum, was 14 and was pronounced dead at an area hospital, police said. A 15-year-old girl was alert and talking despite the gunshot to the head, Philadelphia Police Department Inspector D.F. Pace said.

The shooting happened in a residential neighborhood about two blocks away from Sammuel Fels High School. Police said later Friday that someone opened fire from a passing car on a group of young people standing on Bridge Street.

A motive for the shooting was not known Friday night.

A tally by the city controller's office shows that in 2022, at least 112 minors had been shot, 18 fatally, as of June 9.

Boy,the whole "he was turning his life around" seems to apply to every black guy killed . I feel for the good citizens stuck in a crime ridden community ,they are as much victims as anyone else. I dont know what the answer is ,but money doesnt seem to be a cure all. How many billions, nay trillions.has been pumped into black communities with shit results ? For 60 years no less. We just had a promising young black man who was shot 4 hours after graduating high school . He went to pick up friends at a party. He had a scholarship for college and a bright future and now he's dead because he was being a friend. His aunt said his parents were very strict with him because they feared the very outcome he had. I say to the black community to quit worrying about stupid shit like a statue or what some asshole did 150 years ago and sweep around your own damn doorstep. Its a damn genocide of young black men yet its fucking crickets from the "leaders" .
