Before the session officially started we were all sitting around talking about currents events. One of the women , an older black lady, said something like "I don't agree with the authorities who are harassing him and wanting to put an old man in prison. Just leave him alone." I was gob smacked. Most of the group were women with a history of sexual abuse/rape, including myself. I never returned. I don't care if he's 100, the motherfucker belongs in prison! The Cosby Show may have did more to damage Black Americans image than improve it in my opinion. White conservatives used that show to attack lower class Black Americans for not living up to the unrealistic high standard. You never hear them attack poor whites from the trailer park for not being like the Seavers from Growing Pains. While upper middle class Black families like the Huxtables certainly existed and deserved that representation. The fact is that Cosby seemed to more or less shame poor Blacks and blame them for their own condition. He didn't attack the institutions that kept Black Americans an underclass. He's also a hypocrite who let his sitcom's success go to his head. He tried to ban Amos n Andy despite the fact it was one of the very first shows with an all African-American cast and broke grounds. A Different World was so much better in every way thanks to Debbie Allen taking over the show. Fresh Prince did a better show at addressing racism and classism. Cosby Show was a throwback to 1950s style shows but seemed Cosby wanted to be sort of a morality play to educate Black people on how to act.
