Se7en (1995)
Since my Silence of the Lambs thread started talking about Se7en, I thought I would create my own thread dedicated to the thriller.
David Fincher's masterpiece Se7en took audiences by storm in 1995.
Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt, and Kevin Spacey give great performances. Gwyneth Paltrow, R. Lee Emery, Richard Roundtree, John C. McGinley, and Richard Schiff also turn in great supporting performances.

It’s not bad in a sense that it will frighten you, R8. But it will certainly leave some gruesome imagery permanently imprinted on your memory. I’ve only seen it a couple times and haven’t watched it in years, but I can still see those crime scenes in my mind like I just watched it yesterday.

I think there are some frightening moments, r12, especially if you have seen it in the theater, like i did. I remember everyone jumping at a shot sequence that was very unexpected. Otherwise it manages to keep you in a state of tension and dread that is difficult to sustain, there being hardly any light moments. Agree that some imagery stays with you for a long long time.

Seven is one of my favorite films. I just love these type of films when done well. This reminds me Morgan Freeman has been in a lot of shit, in a wide variety of genres. I just love his silent wisdom. Pitt is darn good in this too. The pacing, the writing, mostly everything works. Great concept of a film, and smartly executed.

I liked this movie but I don't think it's a masterpiece. It's visually very beautiful and transgressive. Definitely ambitious. But it fell flat to me especially regarding the characterization. Today it would have totally been a miniseries. Brad was actually very wooden in this role, Morgan and Gwyneth acted circles around him. Brad did look hot though.

This is one of my favorite films. It's very atmospheric, suspenseful and well-acted by all involved (even Paltrow). It's disturbing, sure, but not in a gratuitous way. I posted the opening title sequence in another thread...it's one of the best and pulls you right in.

r19, Good point about Seven would have to be a miniseries to get produced today. The industry has changed so much. A smart, crime thriller for adults got made this year though, it had to be marketed as 'Batman'.

This film was almost ruined by Brad Pitt.
If Gwennie is out acting you and putting you in the shade, up your game or walk away.
He's done neither, but still makes money in our irrational world.

Se7en was a fantastic neo-noir film. It had the requisite elements of raw grit, gore and atmosphere crafted into a suspenseful and intricate composition, all without being derivative.
I’m not a fan of gratuitous and graphic violence in film, but this film’s bloody, homicidal content worked as being complementary, rather than being a contrary, bloated distraction. IMHO, I think Spacey, Freeman and Pitt were superbly cast and played their roles exceptionally well.

In the Silence of the Lambs thread, I posted that I saw it on a first date with my first boyfriend.
By coincidence, I saw Seven on a date with a later boyfriend. I didn't like the movie (too grimy, too gory, too silly), but he loved it. So I didn't end up in his lap in terror like I had with Silence of the Lambs; instead, I was just rolling my eyes at the ridiculousness of it all by the time it was over.

I always liked Rene Russo, but she never really impressed me as an actress until I saw her in Nightcrawler -- she was fantastic in that film and should've been a serious contender for a Supporting Actress Oscar nomination. She was certainly better than any of the actresses who were nominated in the category for 2014.

I saw it recently in the cinema, the scene where John Doe arrives home, cloaked in shadow, to find the detectives waiting for him and pauses briefly before dropping his grocery bag and opening fire, then the following chase scene was thrilling, amazing to experience in the cinema. Freeman was great, such a comfort, Ms Paltrow was lovely, Pitt had his endearing moments, I'll have to watch again to decide on how he did during the climax - apparently the original plan was to have Pitt's character turn the gun on himself after shooting Spacey, but the studio said no.
One thing - I thought the man interrogated for the lust murder (played by Lehan Morley) should have turned out to be John Doe, something about the actor, I think he'd have made it way more chilling rather than camp, and the set up would have been perfect.

I watched this on VHS while I was home for spring break back in 1996. Shortly after it started, I felt like I was short of breath & felt my heart racing (palpitations, which I didn't know about then) & had to watch the movie in 10-minute increments; I'd pause it, catch my breath, & start again.
It didn't just scare me, it got under my skin & really affected me! The palpitations lasted about 3 months. I was a zombie the day after watching it, & kept thinking that the plot was so clever & twisted, surely there would be real-life copycats who'd replicate it.
I bought it on Blu-Ray & have wanted to watch it, but haven't worked up my nerve yet. I would hope I don't get spooked like I did the first time; I'm older, wiser, & already know the major plot twists & jump scares (even after one viewing 25+ yrs back).
My sister watched it with her boyfriend & said how loud the movie was, & also mentioned the gunshot that caused most of the audience to jump. IIRC she said people were leaving the theater part-way through it (probably out of fear, not from hating the movie, I would think).

I loathed this film as much as I loved Silence of the Lambs.
It takes place in a city where no one has invented overhead lighting.
It has the only acting Arquette whose name you can't remember (Richmond).
The big show down over the box at the end is so damned melodramatic it's risible.
It's manipulative as hell, where Silence is not.
BTW it's Leland Orser who plays the lust murderer - and he's a match for Faye Dunaway in Mommy Dearest.

Yet another Brad Pitt film that would have been better with another actor in his role! There are so many, but a lot of such movies would never have been made if Pitt hadn't used his clout and name to get them funded, so I have to put up with his presence.
It's been a long time, but the main thing I remember about it is how chilling Kevin Spacey was - he played his villain as utterly forgettable and ordinary, a complete nothing of a human who'd still done what he'd did.
