Reading that article, I feel more sympathetic for him. He ran for Congress, when he did, because that was the only goal he had left that he could still accomplish, he couldn't be a football player nor a Marine. He's obviously been through some difficult challenges in his life as a result of the accident. Normally I would have some sympathy for someone in his situation but he has acted like such an asshole. It's a huge contrast with someone like FDR who was stricken by polio and who became more compassionate towards the disadvantaged for the rest of his political career.

When you're in an accident like this, the insurance of the person at fault only pays up to a certain amount. After that, you have to sue the person for any unpaid medical bills that their insurance didn't cover.

Also, it is standard practice (or used to be) for your insurance to sue the person at fault for your medical expenses.

The parents of the other kid don't have to be wealthy. If they own a house, that could be seized to pay for the medical bills.

All the questions I didn't care about have been answered.
