The 80s were a golden age for it. Still a problem in the 90s (Tina Fey's bank commercial from 1995 is a good example) but getting fazed-out. The 2000s were a golden era for non-grandma fashion. High-waisted garbage made a comeback in the 2010s. Now, there's this "coastal grandma" BS.
Young women looking and dressing like grandmas.

Young women these days are very fat.
So high-waisted jeans and mumus are back!
by Anonymous | reply 1 | May 11, 2022 9:58 AM |
Phased out, not fazed out

A pressing subject on every Gay man's mind đ€
by Anonymous | reply 3 | May 11, 2022 10:01 AM |
High-waisted is not for fatties - it accentuates the gunt.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | May 11, 2022 10:03 AM |
High-waisted does however stop rolls of flab spilling over.
High-waisted is favored over skinny ('10s) and low-waisted ('00s) for that reason now.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | May 11, 2022 10:46 AM |
This has been a thing with hipsters for generations.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | May 11, 2022 10:50 AM |
Yes, R3, gay men have always been interested in fashion.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 11, 2022 10:58 AM |
^ Sure, but not young girls dressing like grannies đ
by Anonymous | reply 8 | May 11, 2022 10:59 AM |
I like the shoes. The dress looks exactly like an old bedspread of my grandmother's.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | May 11, 2022 11:02 AM |
Highwaisted, low waisted, skinny, bootleg or flared. The âinâ silhouette has to change every few years to part the gullible from their money. Thatâs fashion, baby.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 11, 2022 11:04 AM |
I blame Diane Keaton.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | May 11, 2022 11:13 AM |
THANK YOU OP.
But wait a minute, thread. Coastal Grandma is "Beaches" and bourgeois grandma at the beach house?
But what are the LOUD flowery peasant schmatte like Aidy's, above and Chloe SĂ©vigny on Seth Meyers recently? Is there an exact word for this fashion? Been around a few years. I don't think it is "coastal grandma" - just "Granny Dress"?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | May 11, 2022 11:20 AM |
High waisted does not look good on fatties. You have to wear shorter tops or tucked in shirts so it shows your fat around the torso more. It also shows your rolls more when you sit down. High waisted looks good if you actually have a smaller waist.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | May 11, 2022 11:22 AM |
If she have a flat gunt area but thick thighs high-waisted will look better on you than skinny fit.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 11, 2022 11:26 AM |
It depends on the fatty's shape. If she is an overblown hourglass, and not a giant apple or pear, high waist will look good, as long as the hips fit.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 11, 2022 11:27 AM |
A slim fit doesn't look good on apples either though -- their legs resemble carrots

They're preparing for the day when their choices will be red, blue, green or brown robes as decreed by the Republic of Gilead.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | May 11, 2022 11:29 AM |
It sure as hell looked better than the hooker chic girls starting sporting in 2003 or so and never stopped.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 11, 2022 12:08 PM |
Yeah, those yoga pants, only streetwalkers used to dress like that. Now it's trickled down to granny in the grocery store.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | May 11, 2022 12:14 PM |
^ I was in Walmart ( Don't judge) the other day and saw an 80 year old woman in those pants đ€ź

Circa 1970/1971 a lot of young women ditched (micro-)mini skirts for maxi and prairie dresses. Also black became a very fashionable color.

What the heck, she doesn't even look like herself.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | May 11, 2022 12:53 PM |
It's better than the inflatable sex doll look young women usually go for.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 11, 2022 1:07 PM |
No, it isn't, R24.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | May 11, 2022 1:11 PM |
They simply look too whorish, except when theyâre dressing like old grannies
by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 11, 2022 1:26 PM |
Young women are frumpy and look stroppy.

This is a good cue as to what is fashionable right now. denim-wise - this will trickle down to mall stores within a few months if it has not already.

This is what some trendy yet basically nerdy college boys wear at my STEM university in Switzerland. Also Scally trainers have made a resurgence.

by Anonymous | reply 32 | May 11, 2022 5:58 PM |
I don't know what to say about a fashion trend called "coastal grandma" being worn by women Drew Barrymore and Julia Roberts' age. I mean, isn't that just regular grandma?
by Anonymous | reply 33 | May 11, 2022 6:03 PM |
R31 Thatâs exactly what kids wore in the late 80s and early 90s. I donât think thereâs ever been a young generation thatâs so dedicated to copypasting a past generationâs style so thoroughly. There was a 70s revival in the 90s, but it wasnât an exact copy.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | May 12, 2022 12:46 PM |
Sloane Rangers espoused this, didn't they? All Mumsy pearls & brooches, knits, and sweetheart collars.

That's more or less the opposite of this thread topic. But do carry on, that subculture of fashion is equally fascinating.

Well we've already seen Capri pants make a comeback with middle aged women. This trend will unfortunately continue with them into their 60's. As if I want to see some geriatric's varicose veins.

What r19 and r24 said, and yet, for me, it still ( and we're dying off) boils down to the 4 Ws - Who, what, when, why.
Clothing rules of yesteryear are gone and ain't coming back, but I think the more-coverage look is a healthy reaction by younger people, of all genders, or non-gender, to what r19 and r24 posted.
Social media, and its perfect, photo-shopped images, has made people, especially teenagers, depressed. They're comparing themselves to those images. They then perceive, rightly or wrongly, that their don't bodies don't measure up.
If you're an older teenager/young adult of any gender or non-gender, especially if you hit the genetic jackpot of being tall, not overweight, and have some curves, you can wear it all, or, close to nothing (I'm not a fan of the close-to-nothing look, no matter your young age or beauty.)
Millie Bobby Brown was dragged here just yesterday for that ugly white and black evening gown she wore. Correct-that gown was a mistake. It actually aged her.
But, last summer, someone here at the DL posted a pic of her wearing a long summer skirt and t-shirt. She looked perfect- feminine, young, fresh, and, best of all-covered.
Accessorizing her look with that good-looking boyfriend hanging off her arm didn't hurt, either.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | May 17, 2022 12:04 PM |
Now if only they would cover their faces and be modest!
by Anonymous | reply 43 | May 17, 2022 12:23 PM |
Where are you seeing this? I see 90s and early 2000s fashion revival of midriffs, jeans, sneakers, boots, lip gloss, crimped and highlighted hair, cheerleader, goth and emo fashions. Bring it On, Mean Girls and Clueless and music like Britney and Avril are now considered "retro." A lot of the boys have that George Michael Faith- era dangle earring and poofy curly fade with colored nails and pearls and wear joggers and hoodies with boots or sneakers. A boy fashion looks sorta late 80s/90s hip-hop and New Jack Swing.

The cunt at R2 fucked it up, of course.
Phased, yes. And the hyphen made it worse.
So what do we say?
Oh, dear. Oh, dear.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | May 17, 2022 12:30 PM |
r43, I'm sincerely curious.
If you don't feel like responding that's fine, but here goes: What amount of garment coverage, or non-coverage, would you prefer to see, or not see, on people who are out in shared public spaces?
I'm not advocating burkas on anybody, no matter where they live on Earth.
I'm all for nudism, however, in its proper, mutually agreed upon place.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | May 17, 2022 12:39 PM |
R46 Della it all depends really. Only young and attractive humans should dare to bare naked flesh in public. Women have become like streetwalkers of the past. Cover up!! If you are hot male then no clothes are preferable. If you are a hot female, you may wear a dress but never show too much skin because this attracts the gaze of the heterosexual male who is looking to spread his seed.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | May 17, 2022 12:49 PM |
It's just strange for us old farts to see teen girls walking around in clothes that (no joke) used to be worn only by hookers. It wasn't that long ago either.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | May 17, 2022 2:13 PM |
drew barrymore is currently rocking the flouncy "possible booze-breath" granny-wear.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | May 17, 2022 2:22 PM |
R48 Yeah. They dress like a late 90s music video. Girls didn't wear tiny crop tops or tight jeans and heels unless going out to a club or party. Most of those videos were set in that type of club setting. Midriffs were worn but were more modest than what I'm seeing. Parents would have a panic attack if it was too skimpy.

It's a way to separate themselves from olds. "I can wear this and still look young. You can't."

I'm talking about hot pants, R50.

High-waisted shit may be stubbornly in, but at least clothes are not as frumpy overall as the olden days. Also, thank the fashion gods oig bad perms and mullets have never really made a comeback.

Mid-to-late-Late 80s/early 90s is my least favourite period in fashion and music. Everything looked and sounded as though it was produced in a mall.

DLers always accuse young women of dressing like sluts
Now they accuse them of dressing like grandmas
So funny đ€Ł đ

I loved women's fashion from the mid-90s until about 2000...chokers, choppy medium-long hair, earthtone makeup. I think it's a beautiful period, particularly following the nightmarish styles of the 80s.
To my eye, it was a good era for most women. Here's a picture of Mariah Carey in 90s glamour. She looked so much better in earthtones than in her sparklepony period when she squeezed herself into tiny tube dresses. Same with Britney Spearsâduring the 90s, she looked really beautiful in earthtones, and then she was made into a shiny pink pop princess.
The only 90s style I can think of that conjures 'grandma' is Elaine from Seinfeld, but she was never really part of the era's fashion sensibilities.
I detest the mid-2000s for womenâshiny tube tops, etc.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | May 21, 2022 7:14 PM |
Reese Witherspoon looking her best in 90s style, complete with a flattering 'Rachel' hairdo.
This doesn't look grandmotherly to me at all.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | May 21, 2022 7:16 PM |
Drew Barrymore looked like a model in 90s style. Not conventionally beautiful, but really interesting in an attractive way and much lovelier to me than the hippie chick thing she settled on.

There was also a trend in the late 60s among certain West Coast hippie girls to dress like Edwardian grannies. Like this girl pictured with writer Richard Brautigan,

Young women who know theyâre pretty dress urban / Kardashian / trashy.
Insecure young women who are trying to be scene kids dress like orphans from the 1930âs. Working in Salem, MA, I saw it all the time.
Thereâs a shop called Modern Millie and it has all these 1950âs pin up style dresses that look sexy on models but most of their consumers are not models

All women should dress like Lizzo, that's obviously way better.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | May 21, 2022 8:00 PM |
Obviously, the Boot Cut and Long And Lean styles from Gap circa 1999-2006 fits all types of women's bodies, and flattered each one.
Those days will be coming back soon. Already on the way!

by Anonymous | reply 69 | May 21, 2022 11:51 PM |
R68, R69, I can only wear skin tight leggings or skinny jeans. Anything with a flared leg or wider bottom makes me look much shorter, and emphasizes my short waist rather than my behind & legs. Bad news.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | May 22, 2022 1:04 AM |
R70 continued, Should have said short trunk is emphasized by jeans and leggings that aren't form fitting.
Many women have vastly different shapes so one cannot say that a particular style would be flattering to most figures.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | May 22, 2022 1:30 AM |
