Gloria's disco album

Was this her best solo album? Here's a four star review from 1998:

[quote] After spending some time exploring her Cuban roots and traditional pop, Gloria Estefan returned to straight-up dance-pop with the infectious Gloria! With its percolating disco beats and sunny melodies, the record recalls her glory days of the late '80s, but there is a stronger Latin rhythmic underpinning, which gives the music depth. Some of the songs themselves are slight, but most of them rank among her best uptempo songs and ballads, especially since her singing is better than ever. In fact, Gloria! proves that some dance-pop divas can get better -- and more adventurous -- with age.

It's the only album that nasal cow ever recorded that I liked.

SOOOOOOOOOOO FAB !!!!!!!!!!

It's a great album. None of the sludgy, dreary ballads that dominated her albums of the late '80s and early '90s.

Her best work was from '93 to '98 - Mi Tierra, Destiny and Gloria!

The best song on the record, IMO! Amazing album!

r6 = obese Tybee from the Z place.

I don't know why Don't Stop was not a single r5. It really is the best song from the album, I agree. It needed to get the remix treatment that the other singles received.

This was a big club song in 1998/1999, months before the all the Jennifer Lopez/Ricky Martin/Enrique Iglesias hits.

How well do J Lo and Gloria get along? J Lo's 1999 debut had bigger hits but doesn't hold up as well.

Great album!

The '90s were really the best period for the divas - Madonna, Janet, Mariah, Whitney, Gloria, Cher, Shania, Celine. All of their best work was produced in this decade, in my opinion.

Moo-oom, just stop or I’ll run to the other end of Star island and ask the Estefans to adopt me.

I remember being distinctly unfulfilled after buying this album. Sure, the music was a bit fun and light (see: Don't Stop) but looking back I can see it was completely overshadowed by more solid, yet earlier, offerings from Madonna and Janet, not to mention the burgeoning explosion of late 90's/2000's happy, fun, dance/house music like Vengaboys, Aqua, and Kylie. You know, all that kitschy crap.

I'm not trying to equate any of these different stylings, I'm just saying that when it came to music I really enjoyed listening to, this "Gloria!" CD I got from Columbia House wasn't at the top of my playlist, much less 6-disc cassette I loaded into my stereo.

Having listened to some of the songs on this thread to refresh my memory, I *will say that the remakes of "Cuba Libre" and "Don't Let this Moment End" still shine from the memories of my mind.

1998 was the year of Cher's "Believe" and all the Whitney and Deborah Cox club remixes.

Disco wasn't very popular but I think this album inspired Kylie's "Light Years" and "Fever" albums. Madonna jumped on the disco bandwagon with 2005's Confessions, years after Kylie's big hits.

by Anonymousreply 20May 19, 2022 4:29 AM

I completely forgot/ignored Cher's rebirth around that time, you're right! It only serves my point though that whatever few songs Gloria was able to earnestly turn out were no match for the manic, pure energy other divas were putting out to the charts.

[quote]The '90s were really the best period for the divas

This is more a statement about your age than the music.

Was it disappointment over the sales of this album that led Gloria to smear her own feces on pictures of Obama at concerts?

by Anonymousreply 23May 19, 2022 3:07 PM

This remix version still sounds fresh and invigorating

Gloria Estefan was lame AF. She was what your mom listened to, along with Michael Bolton.

by Anonymousreply 27June 15, 2022 8:03 PM

Music as buoyant as an errant wave runner!

by Anonymousreply 28June 15, 2022 8:30 PM

I assume Gloria’s album inspired Sheena Easton to do her own disco covers CD a couple years later

I had the maxi singles from this album on CD when I was a 13 year old gayling. Never bought anything else by her. Though this one is now one of my faves:

R29, a forgotten gem now! I love her Giving Up Giving In cover.

An interesting thing about the word ‘mediocre’ is that it’s exactly the same in English and Spanish.

by Anonymousreply 32June 15, 2022 8:49 PM

The remixes of her "Turn The Beat Around" and "Everlasting Love" are legendary club tracks. I had high hopes for "Gloria!" but it didn't deliver.

Does one pronounce it “ES-te-fahn” or “es-TEF-en”?

by Anonymousreply 35June 18, 2022 1:17 PM

Funny there's a thread about this, as I was just thinking about this album a couple days ago, and gave it a listen. I remember being disappointed when I bought it, thinking it was a bit unoriginal and gimmicky. There's one song that completely apes the into to Last Dance, which bothered me at the time. However, it grew on me, and hearing the remix to Oye in the clubs made me appreciate it more. It became a good gym record for me, but not much more. I still like Oye a lot, though. It's probably her best song imo.

by Anonymousreply 36June 18, 2022 1:44 PM

The thousand+ remixes for Heaven's What I Feel, Oye and Don't Lose This Moment End have been put on streaming. Lots of promo mixes that were not available on the maxi-singles back in the '90s.
