Big John Fetterman Pulls Away in Penn. Dem Senate Primary

Pennsylvania will soon have two Democratic senators, and one of them will be John Fetterman.

It's still early. I know poc have accused him of being a racist because he chased a black man who was trespassing in his back yard in the middle of the night. Fetterman had a gun, which he was legally registered to carry.

I don't know Fetterman's whole history with racial issues, but I don't see how that incident makes him racist. If anyone, regardless of color, was trespassing on his private property in the middle of the night, doesn't he have the right to protect his property?

He was mayor at the time and was pretty well known.

by Anonymousreply 1April 17, 2022 2:43 PM

He'll have fun mocking Dr. Oz or what ever Reptile he runs against.

by Anonymousreply 2April 17, 2022 2:50 PM

I thought Fetterman was trailing Conor Lamb by a mile?

by Anonymousreply 3April 17, 2022 2:52 PM

I’m praying for Dr. Oz, r2.

by Anonymousreply 4April 17, 2022 2:52 PM

I'm praying for Conor Lamb. Why must the gorgeous men get steamrolled? As Selena Myers said in Veep, "I hate this country."
I thought Fetterman was trailing Conor Lamb by a mile?

Lamb never once had a lead. He never should’ve entered the race. Thought he’d come sailing in as a white knight cause he looks good in a suit. Pennsylvanians want something different.

by Anonymousreply 6April 17, 2022 3:12 PM

This is great news!

by Anonymousreply 7April 17, 2022 3:18 PM

r6 PA voters are stupid. He does look good and could have been president. I hope he runs for Governor or something because we need more hot Democrats. Republicans have lots of attractive white men in their ranks. Where are our SeanCody politicians?

by Anonymousreply 8April 17, 2022 3:19 PM

I think when you're pretty it doesn't matter how you wear your hair.

by Anonymousreply 9April 17, 2022 3:21 PM

Let’s hope it’s not a Republican tsunami. If so, all bets are off.

by Anonymousreply 10April 17, 2022 3:22 PM

Fetterman has a rapport with working class voters, plus he’s on the right side of Dem social issues as well. He’s the current Lt. Governor so he has good experience in government. He will definitely have to address the issue at r1, which I’m sure he and his advisors are prepared for.

by Anonymousreply 11April 17, 2022 3:23 PM

Fetterman is a loose canon. Wild card. Unpredictable. Remember: When someone shows you who they are....believe them. What has he DONE?

by Anonymousreply 12April 17, 2022 3:25 PM

R12 please give us evidence he’s a loose cannon. He’s all for working class issues, does that make him a loose cannon? He’s also for social/liberal issues (hey, they might actually complement each other!).

by Anonymousreply 13April 17, 2022 3:26 PM
I hope he runs for Governor or something because we need more hot Democrats.

The next Governor will be Josh Shapiro, so Lamb isn’t needed there either. He can stay right where he is (you realize he’s a Democratic elected official, R8?).

I’m sure he’ll be a perennial VP favorite for all the female or person of color Dem presidential nominees over the next few decades. “You need a boring, clean cut white man on that ticket for suburban moms—how’sabout Conor Lamb?”

by Anonymousreply 14April 17, 2022 3:28 PM

I love Josh Shapiro, such a great guy for many years for the areas he represented. I still see him out and about in his neighborhood.

Btw, check out Fetterman’s Wiki. He’s an out and out liberal. He’s for a wealth tax as well as Medicare for all.

R15 So is Bernie.

by Anonymousreply 16April 17, 2022 3:40 PM

He’s not an avowed socialist however, R16. Nor is he an independent using the Democratic Party for fundraising.

by Anonymousreply 17April 17, 2022 3:48 PM

Yes, but Bernie isn’t running for PA’s Senate seat r16.

by Anonymousreply 18April 17, 2022 3:48 PM

Fetterman is much more interesting when being recorded rather than still photos btw. He does not take good photos, he’s better in person.

by Anonymousreply 19April 17, 2022 3:50 PM
He does not take good photos, he’s better in person.

Same.

by Anonymousreply 20April 17, 2022 3:53 PM

Bernie is a socialist, R16. So, no thanks.

by Anonymousreply 21April 17, 2022 3:54 PM

He's not a black woman so how could he be a Democrat?

by Anonymousreply 22April 17, 2022 4:10 PM

Will Black voters, key to the base, show up in November to vote for him? That's the key question.

by Anonymousreply 23April 17, 2022 4:43 PM

The Democratic party needs people who look like Fetter man, TBH. The GOP have somehow, some way, gotten themselves a monopoly on the idea of the masculine man, and Fetterman blows that idea to pieces.

by Anonymousreply 24April 17, 2022 4:50 PM
Will Black voters, key to the base, show up in November to vote for him? That's the key question.

Yes.

by Anonymousreply 25April 17, 2022 5:11 PM

Agree, R24. Fetterman's "look" will appeal to many who are turned off by smoother looking Democrats. He's exactly who and what we need to be competitive in Pennsylvania.

by Anonymousreply 26April 17, 2022 5:18 PM

Democrats still need to try and pass the voting rights act at the federal level. I don't understand how they expect to win in November. Making it hard to vote for your key demographic isn't a smart move. Democrats have really dropped the ball on that on, along with other key issues.

by Anonymousreply 27April 17, 2022 6:30 PM

R23: Fetterman was mayor of a majority Black town for multiple terms. Clearly you nothing of his bio or his appeal. There's a film about Braddock (the town) that features him.

by Anonymousreply 28April 17, 2022 6:50 PM

R27, you’re implying the Dems have something to do with this rash of anti voter laws. You couldn’t be more wrong. There are way more Dems in this country than Repukes. But the Repukes vote and get to pass all these horrible laws.

by Anonymousreply 29April 17, 2022 6:57 PM

Long history of PA politicians losing statewide races before winning them so Connor Lamb isn't done. His campaign never caught traction.

If its a red wave year, Fetterman loses. PA is not a state that bucks the trends. The blue collar former dems, now Trump voters, will not be supporting him in any decent numbers. He may have a problem with black turnout--Republicans will spend millions "educating" black voters about the incident while mayor. He will have a problem in the vote rich, white collar Philly suburbs that gave Biden his entire statewide margin.

Fetterman CAN win. At best, it's 50/50.

by Anonymousreply 30April 17, 2022 7:02 PM

I like that he didn’t get into politics because of some long-running career plan to climb his way to the Oval Office, but because he actually wanted to help fix real issues.

by Anonymousreply 31April 17, 2022 7:06 PM

Do tell, r27, *how* did they drop the ball? What exactly can they do to get that Voting Rights Act passed that they aren't doing?

by Anonymousreply 32April 17, 2022 7:19 PM

Fetterman looks intimidating and won't put up with nonsense. I bet he can hold his own against the repub traitors. I like him.

by Anonymousreply 33April 17, 2022 8:09 PM

He looks, talks and acts more like a Marine than Conor Lamb does.

by Anonymousreply 34April 17, 2022 9:56 PM

He reminds me of that wrestler from Minnesota. Jesse Ventura.

by Anonymousreply 35April 18, 2022 11:40 AM

He does, r35. Jesse Ventura was supposedly a Libertarian but is more conventionally liberal in todays times.

by Anonymousreply 36April 18, 2022 1:17 PM

I only wish Fetterman didn't dress like such a goddamn loser.

Work shirts, sweatpants, hoodies. He looks fucking unemployed!

by Anonymousreply 37April 18, 2022 1:26 PM

R37, black women went ballistic on Twitter because he was wearing shorts when he attended an event that Pres. Biden was at. They thought he was so disrespectful.

I have mixed feelings about that. On one hand, yeah, maybe he should have dressed more appropriately, but on the other, he is authentic and isn't trying to be something he's not.

I really didn't think it was that big a deal to get so outraged over, it was a small faux pas and he was just sitting in the audience, not coming up on stage or making a speech or anything.

I think they're going to pick on him no matter what he does or doesn't do.

by Anonymousreply 38April 18, 2022 1:41 PM

R28 "Authentic" my fat, white ass! This isn't about his personal brand as an everyman. This is about having the brains and the damn decency to dress like a grown-ass man!

Even poor people know that there are some jobs - and some occasions - where it's expected to dress your best. He's the state's Lieutenant Governor, which isn't a vital role, but it's still a job involving the administration of the entire Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. They pay his salary and he helps solve their problems. The least the bum can do is dress like he respects that job and gives it the dignity it deserves.

by Anonymousreply 39April 18, 2022 1:47 PM

Sorry, that was meant for R38

by Anonymousreply 40April 18, 2022 1:47 PM

Don't get your caftan in a bunch R39.

by Anonymousreply 41April 18, 2022 2:05 PM

R39 At least a caftan is more tasteful to wear in public than this walking Carhartt catalog would know!

by Anonymousreply 42April 18, 2022 2:07 PM

R42, You've never been to Reading, Pa., have you?

by Anonymousreply 43April 18, 2022 2:36 PM

R43 No, I've never been that curious to see how America's meth is cooked.

by Anonymousreply 44April 18, 2022 2:38 PM

R44, sure… nobody in the big cities does meth.

by Anonymousreply 45April 18, 2022 2:40 PM

R45 If it weren't for the unemployable tractor jockeys in places like Reading who'll do anything to feed themselves (except go to college or move), we'd have to switch back to pills!

by Anonymousreply 46April 18, 2022 2:41 PM

R38: Nice try, racist troll.

by Anonymousreply 47April 18, 2022 2:42 PM
black women went ballistic on Twitter because he was wearing shorts when he attended an event that Pres. Biden was at. They thought he was so disrespectful.

While I’m a big Fetterman supporter, I must admit that these posts made me choke on my lunch from laughing. Yes, I wish John was a little less Walmart and more Today’s Man but hey, maybe that’s what got him this far.

by Anonymousreply 50April 18, 2022 3:56 PM

Fetterman is the guy who comes to a nice restaurant wearing sweatpants while I’m in slacks and a sport coat. That drives me up the wall, but most Americans are like him today.

by Anonymousreply 51April 18, 2022 4:00 PM
He’s all for working class issues, does that make him a loose cannon? He’s also for social/liberal issues (hey, they might actually complement each other!).

Fetterman is one of the few Democrats who can pull off this dichotomy. He’s in support of liberal issues, but he has huge appeal among working class whites and people who hate “elitists”. He’ll do very well in a PA statewide race.

by Anonymousreply 52April 18, 2022 4:07 PM

Conor Lamb is a DINO who will be as useless as Joe Manchin in the Senate. Voted with Trump’s agenda 70% of the time.

Fetterman dresses like a lot of other Pennsylvania men: the only times you'll see him in a suit is at funerals and his own wedding (maybe, if the lady insists). His constituents recognize themselves in his attire even though you don't.

Be thankful he's genuinely THAT GUY. That he is gives him the chance a guy you find astheticly more appealing would never, ever have.

As a bonus: He'll work for you even though you hate what he wears and looks like. He will help get bills passed ad shit done. You want some useless hole to beat off to, I'm sure that old Cockgobbler's nudes are still around here somewhere. He used to be pretty. His voting record was decidedly not, however.

by Anonymousreply 58April 18, 2022 6:01 PM

Amy Klobuchar, John Fetterman, and Tim Ryan are the only Democratic politicians today who could decisively win Midwest and Rust Belt voters.

by Anonymousreply 61April 18, 2022 6:24 PM

He may not dress like you like, but his interior design aesthetic is completely on pointe, despite working in Harrisburg he still lives in Braddock in an old converted car dealership that would make many a SoHo loft weep with envy. Though most Pennsylvanian’s don’t know what to make of his Brazilian wife.

His dressing down may make him more relatable to the working class...not appearing elitist.

by Anonymousreply 64April 18, 2022 6:48 PM

Exactly, r64. He's not stupid, he's aware of the optics. Try telling that to the prissy Mr. Blackwells on this thread, though.

by Anonymousreply 65April 18, 2022 6:51 PM

IMO, the affectations some of you consider marks of "authenticity" I consider costuming. Theatrics. Sorry. I'm very undecided about this guy. We need workhorses not show ponies.

by Anonymousreply 66April 18, 2022 7:06 PM

Conor Lam can win the gay and female vote based on looks alone.

by Anonymousreply 67April 18, 2022 7:24 PM

by Anonymousreply 71April 18, 2022 7:48 PM

I think Fetterman will be President one day. Remember, I called it. In fact, I called it in a thread a few months ago. Trumpy types will like his "down to earth" looks and will probably vote for him depending on who his challenger would be. He comes off like a guy they can relate to.

BTW, R60, I'm originally from PA Dutch Country, and yes -- Fetterman dresses like most straight men in PA. I don't know who you're hanging out with.

by Anonymousreply 72April 18, 2022 7:50 PM

R72, nope and nope. Pennsylvania while still purple is getting redder. I think it's going to be a closer race than you think. And, seriously, not sure who you are hanging out with but most people in PA dress like humans and not Sons of Anarchy.... particularly given the Christian conservative bent of the state.

by Anonymousreply 73April 18, 2022 10:38 PM

R73, some areas are getting redder, but the suburban Philly and Pittsburgh areas are getting bluer. So I’m not sure I buy your analysis.

by Anonymousreply 74April 18, 2022 10:41 PM

I’m not in PA, I’m not from PA, and I actually don’t like PA. But I like Fetterman and have kept an eye on him. He walks the walk and talks the talk. And his wife does the same with her charitable efforts in their community.

by Anonymousreply 75April 18, 2022 10:42 PM

Why don’t you like PA, R75?

R23 No, the key question is "Where are the DECENT White people?"

by Anonymousreply 85April 19, 2022 10:19 AM

R1 Everything you said is untrue. He was Mayor at the time. He was driving his pickup truck on a PUBLIC street in the middle of the DAY (on a Saturday) when he saw a Black man jogging down the street. At the same time he heard what he thought was gunshots. He claims that he was triggered by recent school shootings and was trying to protect the community so he grabbed a rifle from the back of his truck, chased down the jogger and held him at gun point until the police got there. The jogger was unarmed and released at the scene. The police found zero evidence that any shots had been fired by anyone and that most likely it had been a car that backfired or kids playing with firecrackers a few blocks away.

by Anonymousreply 86April 19, 2022 10:35 AM

^ not excusing what happened but Fetterman explained his reasoning, which I think most people will accept. The guy even endorsed him for Senate.

Fetterman defended himself and claimed Miyares was running in the direction of an elementary school, and that he made the decision to approach him with the firearm due to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting occurring the month prior.[26] Fetterman's campaign also said that when initiated the pursuit, and because the jogger was wearing a black sweatsuit and mask, he did not know the jogger's race or gender at the time of the incident.[26][27] Miyares, who is serving prison time for armed assault and kidnap, said what sounded like gunshots were bottle rockets set off by kids, though Fetterman said no fireworks debris had been found.[26] Miyares added that Fetterman had "done far more good than that one bad act" and, "should not be defined by it," and hoped he would win the senate race.[28][26]

R83, Gisele seems like a lovely, down to earth person.

by Anonymousreply 90April 19, 2022 1:08 PM

R87, thank you for setting the record straight.

The only version I heard about the incident was from the black woman on Twitter and this is a perfect example how misinformation can get out of control and ruin a person.

by Anonymousreply 91April 19, 2022 1:52 PM

R87 He didn't defend himself. Not even close to it. He had to chase after the guy who he saw running from a distance.

by Anonymousreply 92April 19, 2022 1:56 PM

R92, it’s not that Fetterman said he defended himself because he was attacked, the sentence means he defended his actions that day.
I’m not a progressive and this article is written by a hack by the sounds of it but Lamb and Kenyatta’s behavior recently have been pretty low. They’re both running vanity runs at this point. [bold]Lamb should’ve stayed in the house, his D+1 seat was his to win given his incumbency status, now Dems are probably favored to lose it.[/bold] Kenyatta, i respected him, but he has no chance just like Lamb. The primary is over, they’ll need a miracle to stop Fetterman. Drop out and let the PA Dems unite around one guy while the republicans are still fractured to give us a head start. by Anonymousreply 100April 19, 2022 8:56 PM

I am truly excited for this PA race. It isn’t every day that Dems receive a candidate who can actually attract working class white males!! Hoping this will inject the party with the language and wordsmithing needed to regain traction with the few white men who aren’t POS. Fetterman shatters the mold in every way.

Dresses working class/talks working class, but actually Ivy League educated. Took murders so seriously as mayor that their dates were tattooed on his arm (black peoples just want to be heard, and his tattoos >show< he actually cares). He’s a white male married to a sexy Brazilian Barbie, but she too cares about our society, she isn’t a mere trophy. He’s also a Dem who uses guns, yipee!!! And last but not least, he’s a progressive who can walk and chew gum (he’s pushing progressive ideas without causing division, protecting the coalition). And he’s one of the few who actually calls out that fucking traitor Manchin.

You all better give to this race, we desperately need to win PA.
thank you for setting the record straight

But R87 didn't, R91 -- but that's not their fault.

I'm assuming that person didn't read the whole interview from where that quote came. The important thing is, for the greater good, he still thinks Fettertman should win.

[italic]The guy does like Fetterman and did say, "done far more good than that one bad act" and, "should not be defined by it," but he also said the account of what happened wasn't true.

“He lied about everything,” Miyares wrote.

He has previously said he was jogging in the neighborhood when he heard fireworks, just before Fetterman confronted him.

“He knew my race. The gun was aimed at my chest while he loaded five red shells into the tube of the 12-gauge TAC shotgun,” Miyares wrote. “Once he finished, he aimed it at my face out of the Ford F-150 Truck.”

But in a second letter to The Inquirer, postmarked on the same day last week, Miyares said Fetterman could face a political backlash now if the Senate candidate revised his account.

“Telling the truth on an incident 10 years ago could cause him more harm than good,” Miyares wrote. “Mr. Fetterman and his family have done far more good than that one bad act or action and, as such, should not be defined by it.”

He signed that letter: “Gooo Fetterman.”

The accounts of both men match a description in a 2013 incident report filed by the Braddock Police Department, which said Miyares was unarmed. The officer who responded to the 911 call said two people in the area stopped him to say “they heard several shots” before he got to Fetterman and Miyares.

The officer wrote that Miyares, 36, was wearing “running clothing” and headphones and was “very cooperative, but was upset that Fetterman pulled a shotgun on him.”[/italic]

Not only did Fetterman win the 2018 election, he was the first ever candidate to defeat the incumbent:
In a historic win as unconventional as the candidate himself, the work-shirt wearing, small-town mayor John Fetterman defeated Lt. Gov. Michael Stack in the Democratic primary Tuesday, according to unofficial results.
Stack is the state’s first lieutenant governor to lose in a primary election.
Fetterman, mayor of Braddock, Allegheny County, pulled in more than 40 percent of the vote with 84 percent of precincts reporting, according to unofficial results from the Department of State.

R101, bumping because of your post. It is so amazingly spot on.

by Anonymousreply 105April 19, 2022 11:46 PM

OMG, thank you r105. I have a single great post for every thousand shitty ones, haha.

I posted on a different thread that I actually believe he could run with Biden in 2024. If this country elected Trump, why not a Fetterman as VEEP? Anything is possible, we are only limited by ourselves (which is the *only* good to come out of having Trump). Trump destroyed the old mold, so let’s use that to our advantage! Flip the script. They want a white working class beast again for President? Well, we can have a working class beast too, but our guy a) actually has a brain, and b) he actually cares about people and democracy. Fetterman could chew up Dump without breaking a sweat. He would easily (and most assuredly) emasculate Trump at every chance he could get. It is sooooooo easy to put Trump on defense, he’s like a child.

by Anonymousreply 106April 20, 2022 12:13 AM

He doesn't dress working class. He doesn't. Do you see anyone else wearing little boy shorts in the middle of winter in r94 s link? Nope. He's all about pot and guns. That's his appeal.

by Anonymousreply 107April 20, 2022 12:20 AM

Wrong, r107. It’s easy enough to check out what he stands for. He’s very progressive.

by Anonymousreply 108April 20, 2022 12:34 AM

From the website at r108. All of these are core Democratic principles. There is no equivocating at all:

The minimum wage should be a living wage of at least $15 an hour. All work has dignity, and all paychecks must too.

Health care is a fundamental human right – just like housing, food, and education.

Climate change is an existential threat. We need to transition to clean energy as quickly as possible, and we can create millions of good union jobs in the process.

Weed should be legal, nationwide — for jobs, justice, veterans, farmers, and revenue. It’s time to end the failed war on drugs.

Immigration is what makes America, America. We need a compassionate response to immigration reform that actually treats immigrants like human beings.

Black Lives Matter. John served as mayor of a city that’s more than 80% Black, and has championed the idea that Black lives matter since long before it became a hashtag.

The union way of life is sacred. It’s what built this nation, and it must be protected.

A woman’s right to an abortion is non-negotiable. Women should have control over their own bodies and their own lives. Period.

LGBTQIA+ communities deserve equal protections under the law. John has always stood for equality, and was one of the first elected officials in PA to officiate a same-sex wedding – when it was still illegal.

Get corporate money out of politics. John refuses contributions from corporate PACs, and he signed the “No Fossil Fuel Money” Pledge.

That was from 2016, r112.

by Anonymousreply 115April 20, 2022 1:23 AM

Being from Radnor means you should know Delco, R114, eastern Delco is full of shorts wearing guys. The Reddit post I linked to is from January 2020 and it is specifically about wearing shorts in cold weather.
scientific evaluation based on recently bumping in to three different guys wearing shorts in freezing weather... all from South Philly. One guy was waiting to leave Deptford sam’s club in shorts and muscle shirt as the temps were around freezing... drives over from philly to do his shopping. In related news the 42Freeway area is proud to be an annex of Philly and South Philly. We’ll take your soda and shopping dollars.
Or Delco... I notice this a lot in Springfield, Marple & Ridley Townships.
Delco uniform is mandatory, no matter the time of year. For men, that’s Adidas flip-flops, black nike socks, basketball shorts, and a high school sports t-shirt with the sleeves ripped off.

I live in Center City and I see it all the time, when I'm in Delco I see it even more. My mail carrier wears shorts [italic]pretty much[/italic] all winter.

Also, I don't see how the year of the picture at R113 makes this untrue but I did find a 2021 picture in the Delco Daily Times... that was taken in Radnor.

This was funny...
The lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania is continuing to publicly troll the lieutenant governor of Texas over the latter talking up voter fraud.
Back in November, days after Joe Biden was declared the winner, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick actually offered up a 1 million dollar reward for anyone who comes forward with evidence of voter fraud. The wild allegations the Trump team has made in the month-plus since have not been proven at all, and even Trump-appointed judges have rejected their claims.
Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman was quick to respond to that, and has recently been trolling Patrick for the money after highlighting alleged voter fraud from Republican voters.
Late last month he tweeted, “Let me be clear, if you take away all of the voter fraud in Pennsylvania that involved illegally voting for Trump, you do not have one single, documented case of voter fraud in Pennsylvania.”

by Anonymousreply 120April 20, 2022 3:33 AM

Fetterman is amazing and very appealing — and I know I’m right cuz trolls. It’s the economy, stupid, and Fetterman gets that. “The best way to judge a society is by how it treats its lowest members,” as Mandela liked to say. If we raise the standard of living for those at the bottom, everybody wins.

Connor Lamb never stood a chance.

And r122, you're a fool. It is LAMB who voted "R" 68% of the time. But you go on with your appearance-bias.

by Anonymousreply 123April 20, 2022 4:18 AM

I want to lick every inch of Conor Lamb from head to toe, twice over.

The man is beautiful and compassionate and has shown a big bulge in sweatpants on Instagram. Those lips! Those eyes!

But Fetterman is the better candidate for this office this year, just as Lamb was ideal for his House seat when he was elected.

Fetterman is the wealthy son of two wealthy Republican Parents and he has you all convinced he's a "man of the people" and a progressive. You guys are so easily duped.

by Anonymousreply 139April 20, 2022 2:53 PM

R1339 I'd rather see Lamb as a VP candidate.

by Anonymousreply 140April 20, 2022 3:17 PM

If I lived in Pennsylvania I would reluctantly vote for him over a Republican but never in the primary. I loathe his style of politicking and faux macho insults. I feel like he is what liberal Democrats think other Democrats will like. But the thing that works with republican voters will not work with democrat and independent voters. he will probably win the primary but I don't think he will win the general.

by Anonymousreply 141April 20, 2022 3:22 PM
he will probably win the primary but I don't think he will win the general.

He will win the general, because his opponent will be Dr. Oz… who all Pennsylvanians view as a fraud and a Hollywood creation.

by Anonymousreply 142April 20, 2022 3:50 PM

R139, his parents are indeed Republicans and well off, but they didn’t start out well off. And plenty of Gen X and younger rejected their parents’ politics.

R142 is right, Fetterman’s Repuke opponent will be Oz, who’s a joke.

by Anonymousreply 143April 20, 2022 3:51 PM

I didn't think it will be Oz, R142. I think it will be McCormick.

Both races are competitive. Fetterman may have the lead but the number of undecided voters is high and those who say they may change their mind is over 40%. The Republican race is just as competitive.

by Anonymousreply 144April 20, 2022 4:09 PM

😂 Both races are not competitive. It’s Fetterman’s to lose, and there’s no reason to expect that he will.
I'm now in Western PA. And, wow, no, Delco isn't all of PA. It's the exception and not the rule.

And I said yes, wearing shorts during the winter months is common in Philadelphia and Delaware County and provided a post from r/philadelphia as an example. You may not like it and you may not see it in places you have been but that doesn't mean it isn't normal in other parts of the state.
Sims is a niche candidate who won't play outside his tiny urban district.

I don’t even know if he’ll do well in Philadelphia.

Austin Davis is endorsed by Josh Shapiro and today I received my second piece of election mail from the PA Democratic Party highlighting this endorsement - this isn’t new news but I didn’t know how the extent of people’s displeasure with Sims’ Planned Parenthood stunt until today when I got the list of endorsements from my local Democratic Committee. They backed Sims for state representative in 2020 and in previous years, this year they endorse no one for Lt. Governor.

by Anonymousreply 187April 27, 2022 1:44 AM

^ My local ward leaders also endorse Malcolm Kenyatta for senate. In 2018 they backed Nina Ahmad for Lt. Governor in the primary and endorsed Fetterman in the general but this is different. The election is right around the corner, my ballot was in today's mail but I've barely seen any signs in my Center City neighborhood. I've seen them in Delco & Montco but to date I have only noticed one sign in someone's window and it was a Kenyatta sign. Conor Lamb is highly experienced and qualified, and he supports the full Build Back Better bill, eliminating the filibuster to secure voting rights, and has voted with Biden/Dems consistently... unlike the SO-CALLED "progressives" in the Squad, who vote with the GOP more than Manchin does.

Connor Lamb is also, unlike Fetterman, putting in the actual work. He's listening to people, showing up, meeting with all communities (Fetterman is POINTEDLY ignoring the Black Community... and if you think a Democrat can win in PA without the Black Community behind him and showing up to vote, you're crazy).

I just don't see what people see in Fetterman I guess. He's an empty suit, and arrogant entitled spoiled brat, born of wealthy Republican parents, and racist as fuck.

He's no progressive. He himself says he's "Populist", and populism is NEVER good for minorities or for democracy. The fact that he's a lazy slob is just icing on the nasty cake that is Pennsylvania Shrek. Connor Lamb is more trustworthy, dependable, experienced, qualified, decent, caring, empathetic, and professional.

There's really no comparison. No amount of empty "Corporate Democrat" posturing, or "Manchin-Lite" lies will change the fact that he's none of those things, and that he's better in every single way than Fetterman.

by Anonymousreply 207April 28, 2022 6:19 PM

GOOD! he talks the talk and walks the walk. he's also a native from the poorest section of the state, the south west, and talks to them directly. outside of political gain, he also is a progressive

He's NOT progressive. By his own admission and claims, he's POPULIST. And Populists suck... whether they're from the Right (like Trump) or Left (like Fetterman).

There's a whole lot to "not love" beyond the fact he's an unapologetic self-professed Populist... the fact that he's a lazy oaf and a racist vigilante who lies, fails to show up, and acts all entitled to the position without actually working for it.

Why are Fetterman supporters so damn gullible and ignorant?

He's NOT a "true progressive" of any sort. He's POPULIST. Populism never ends well for democracies. The end game of Populism is fascism. Every time. Further, he's the wealthy son of wealthy Republican parents. He's cosplaying as a "man of the people" in the same way Boris Johnson in the UK does.... it's all a con. He dresses like a slob to hoodwink the gullible, and it's sad how many gullible people there really are.

He's NOT one of them. He's a wealthy son of wealthy Republican parents.

And it's not "Ivory Tower" to want a U.S. Senator to be competent and capable, and willing to put in the work... which Fetterman frankly isn't.

Jesus Christ, how can you so smugly believe such obvious lies as if you're somehow smarter than any given fool who can look at that fraud and see right through him?

by Anonymousreply 234May 7, 2022 11:03 PM

R228, once again, you're lying. That is absolutely the truth. Fetterman chased down an innocent Black Man and held him at gunpoint with a loaded shot gun, even though he had ZERO authority to do so, and zero reason to do so. And he's never stopped lying and changing his story about it. HE BROKE THE LAW WHEN HE DID THAT, and he has never apologized.

How the fuck you going to dismiss and ignore and deny those obvious facts?

You're unhinged and lying R235.
Fetterman chased down an innocent Black Man and held him at gunpoint with a loaded shot gun, even though he had ZERO authority to do so, and zero reason to do so.

That has a ring of truthiness, so I believe it.

by Anonymousreply 237May 8, 2022 1:56 AM

Fetterman is garbage, but because OZ simply isn't an option, Fetterman might just pull it off. For a State full of Blue Collar people to elect Trump POTUS in 2016 and have a close election in 2020 with Trump on the ballot (the most elite out of touch candidate to ever to run for POTUS) suggests that there are a lot of REALLY STUPID people living in that State!

by Anonymousreply 238May 8, 2022 8:59 AM

Democrats need to make more of an effort to reach working class voters, and Fetterman is appealing to them. People in Pennsylvania own guns, they’re concerned about crime, and they’re not interested in the liberal “you WILL respect my pronouns” BS that comes from the world of Ivy-League academia which Democrats typically love to push.

by Anonymousreply 239May 8, 2022 12:36 PM

Conor Lamb has a voting record no Democrat should tout.

But you know what, r207 et al.? There is more to political success than voting records.

Personal impressions YOU MUST KNOW count for much (for good or ill).

Who looks the part? For example, only rarely has the taller Presidential candidate lost; we like height in our leaders. And remember how Michael Dukakis looked in the tank?

Who blundered in behaviors? GHWB looking at his watch while debating Bill Clinton. Jimmy Carter and the "attack rabbit."

Who misspoke? Jimmy Carter and our "malaise" (a word he didn't use, but it stuck). Howard Dean's "scream." HRC's "vast Right-Wing conspiracy" and a "basket of deplorables."

And name. My mother "knew" Nixon would defeat Humphrey in 1968 because "people won't vote for a 'Hubert' (they did, but not enough)."

That leads me to Conor Lamb. He looks effete, all thin and sandy-haired, and has the automatically-emasculating name of LAMB.

It doesn't matter that Lamb is a former Marine; might as well call him Casper Milquetoast, because you're sure not going to call him "Senator."

by Anonymousreply 240May 8, 2022 1:26 PM

by Anonymousreply 242May 8, 2022 6:49 PM

Fetterman thought a black guy was committing a crime, and he chased him with a gun while waiting for police. You won’t find anyone in Pennsylvania who has a problem with that.

by Anonymousreply 243May 8, 2022 7:03 PM

The Blacks in Philly do have a problem with Fakkermann.

by Anonymousreply 244May 8, 2022 7:59 PM

Fetterman is going to win the primary in a landslide so of course Democrats start to attack him as a racist. Here comes Sen. Oz.

by Anonymousreply 245May 8, 2022 8:45 PM

R236, no. There are no lies there. Just truths you don't want to believe. It's all been corroborated. He's acknowledged it happened (amid his changing stories for why).

The real question, why are you so insistent on denying the truth, and ignoring reality?

by Anonymousreply 246May 8, 2022 11:53 PM

R245, He's a racist because he says and does racist things. He's almost completely avoided the pennsylvania black community in his campaign... and I ask you how a Democrat is going to win without the support of Black People in a general election? Don't blame Dems if he wins the primary and loses the general. We warned you. The GOP will run ads about his holding a Black Man hostage at gunpoint non-stop because they know it craters his support among liberals and Democrats.

by Anonymousreply 254May 9, 2022 2:28 AM

^Are there any general election polls pitting him against either of the leading republicans?

by Anonymousreply 255May 9, 2022 4:48 AM

by Anonymousreply 256May 9, 2022 4:54 AM

Fetterman, like future Governor Josh, have long records to run on.

by Anonymousreply 257May 9, 2022 5:26 AM

by Anonymousreply 258May 9, 2022 7:03 AM

For you, r251, and your Joe-Come-Lately Lamb.

BTW, just so ya know, to my Eastern half of the state the Monongahela and Ohio Rivers aren't where it's at; the Lehigh and the Delaware Rivers are. We never give one thought to anything Pittsburghian beyond a couple sports (Beaver County to us means Broadway Joe, not Conor Lamb). Moon Township, PA, might as well be ON the Moon. We are oriented East and SE: Philly; the Jersey Shore; NYC. Our one major exception is Penn State.

So Conor Lamb has the proverbial snowball's chance in my half of the state, from the Delaware Water Gap down to Delaware County.

by Anonymousreply 261May 9, 2022 1:34 PM

Fetterman cannot win a general election in PA. GOP is salivating to bring up his racist past (the one he keeps trying to justify instead of apologizing for and talking directly to the Black community about it).

You better pray Connor Lamb gets the nom or you will have another GOP Senator in that seat next year!

You can ignore the Black people and TRUE progressives if you want but no Democrat can win PA without them.

by Anonymousreply 262May 9, 2022 2:27 PM

You mean the GOP that salivates over Oz?

by Anonymousreply 263May 9, 2022 2:53 PM

Working class PA is not buying Fetterman's costume. Hipsters might. Do they vote?

Now. God willing, you folks, MSNBC, Philly and Pittsburgh could carry him. But it's a ridiculous act. The fact that any hissing bitch on here buys it as "reaching the working class Trump voter!" is all you need to know that it's not going to work. He's horrifying looking, has a D next to his name- he's toast with rural white men and women. That's it. That's how it works.

STOP TREATING THIS LIKE A STUPID STREAMING SHOW. We keep fucking losing because we think we can trick voters with clothes and catchphrases.

Only prissy news bitches care if they shared a pool that wasn't theirs or have a fancy loft. And we're voting for him anyway.

by Anonymousreply 273May 9, 2022 11:56 PM

To the constenation of establishment types, many fervent pro-Trumpers are winning primaries. Primaries tend to attract the most fervent of the parties' respective bases. As such, they don't necessarily best represent the sentiments of general election voters.

Based on some of the comments in this thread you'd think Fetterman wasn't the first ever candidate to defeat an incumbent Lt. Governor.
Stack’s past year in the lieutenant governor’s residence and in what’s known as the state’s “best job” was not all it was cracked up to be. Despite earning an annual salary of $163,692 and only responsible for filling in for the governor if he no longer can hold office, Stack has spent most of the year putting out public relations fires.

After his staff reported abuse and harassment by the Stack family, Wolf made an unprecedented move of stripping the family’s state police detail and restricted the lieutenant governor’s residence staff.

Shortly after, Stack’s wife received in-patient treatment for a mental health issue. Wolf declined to release a report by the inspector general’s office to protect the Stack family’s privacy due to her mental health treatment.

All you Gay Bottoms want "Big John Fetterman" as the nominee because you want a "monster" to punish fuck you. A lot of you same people voted for Trump for the same reason. Most women would not find either of those men at all attractive. In fact they would be repulsed by him physically. Trump got in because GOP voters will elect whoever has an R by their name. Most Dems don't get in line that way. True progressives won't fall for this phony. Minorities will likely sit it out if he is the nominee. So keep thinking with your dicks and applaud Senator Oz!

I'm tellin' ya, not only is he going to win the primary, he's going to be the PA senator, and, given enough time (and ambition), he may be president some day. I've said it here before, and I'll say it again: I called it.

R303 I'm pretty sure if you looked up the word "Goon" in the dictionary, John Fetterman's picture would appear. No one said he did not have support. I think what many of us are saying is that it is not enough. What good is a couple votes in the suburbs if you are missing entire urban centers because a segments of the Democratic Party failed to consider large portions of the base as they rushed to coronate George Zimmerman jr. The GOP will crucify him this fall if he is the nominee.

R307, you are obviously a Republican. Bernie and the Squad are not Progressive Democrats. They're trash! They're Democratic Socialists. There is a big difference. The Bernie crowd would back Fetterman. He is a fake progressive just like they are.

Democrats ARE progressive by definition. and Democrats do not see that crowd as progressives. They're selfish and destructive. Stop repeating GOP talking points.

News flash: Just because Joy Reid and a bunch of other black media personalities on MSNBC and CNN continue to parrot the lies that “black women are the backbone of the Democratic Party” and “black women saved this country”… doesn’t mean that any of it is true.

Democrats can’t win unless they appeal to working class white male voters and suburban white women voters in states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin. John Fetterman understands that, and that’s why he is going to win without pandering to blacks.

by Anonymousreply 314May 10, 2022 8:16 PM

R314 The Democratic Party has not won the White vote since the Eisenhower administration. You may not like that Black people (primarily the Women) have to hold up the Democratic Party and fill in the GAP after so many White people left the party, it is true. When Black people were not allowed to vote (much the way many are being blocked today), White people voted Democrat. Without Black people, Fetterman won't win. You heard it here first. Whining and spouting your racist diatribe won't change that fact.

by Anonymousreply 315May 10, 2022 8:27 PM

Why are some of you saying he’s a fake progressive? Can you give concrete examples of that?
You may not like that Black people (primarily the Women) have to hold up the Democratic Party and fill in the GAP after so many White people left the party, it is true.

White people left the party because of the endless black pandering. Democrats can’t win until they acknowledge the problem with black criminality. Bill Clinton passed the Crime Bill in 1994 and easily won a second term with support from suburban whites and Southern voters.

R312, you do realize all of the high profile candidates are gun owners, right? McCormick is firing a gun in the ad at R200. This morning I saw an ad with McCormick and his mother talking about guns.
In the past week, Pennsylvania residents have been subjected to TV ads featuring U.S. Senate candidate Dave McCormick firing a series of weapons, showing his experience as a teenage hunter, a West Point cadet and a solider in Iraq.
“I’m Dave McCormick and I approve this message to protect the second amendment because that’s what guarantees the rest.”

Fetterman's history with black citizens and now his stroke make him unfit and imo unelectable. I see Conor Lamb as a super appealing candidate who won his first election in a red-leaning wing district. I think he would also wipe the floor with Mehmet Oz, but I doubt Oz will win the primary.

R390

by Anonymousreply 394May 16, 2022 2:52 AM

R392 It is governed by the State laws. If there is time, the Party will usually try to have another primary. If not there will probably not be a candidate for that party, just write-ins.

by Anonymousreply 395May 16, 2022 2:58 AM

Thanks r395. What about a scenario where there's no time to have another primary but there is enough time for the party to name a replacement candidate to the ballot. Wouldn't state party bosses be able to choose someone? Obviously to be competitive a candidate is needed as opposed to write ins. Because the parties are separate entities that rule themselves and not government entities, I would think their by laws would allow for such a contingency?

by Anonymousreply 396May 16, 2022 3:13 AM

R396 Like I said this is something strictly governed by the States but I am not aware of any State that allows random people (ie party bosses) get to decide who can run on the party ticket. That directly interferes with the democratic process. In some instances a Governor can fill a seat if someone dies in office, but if you meet the State requirements to run nobody can stop you from running and competing to represent the party.

by Anonymousreply 397May 16, 2022 3:45 AM

As I recall, the party selected his replacement, someone who was a runner-up in the primary. That replacement candidate, John Warner, won in November & served in the Senate for five terms.

I absolutely prefer Lamb, but Fetterman would wipe the floor with Oz, where are you getting this - bullshit MSNBC news?

It's McCormick who would be the problem for Fetterman. Same damn thing in a better costume with money and a Trump connection, even as Trump tries to deny it.

They're running insane xenophobic/Hollywood anti-Oz ads.

Hopefully Barnette wins the R nomination. Literally anyone could beat her.

by Anonymousreply 415May 16, 2022 7:04 PM

Are you serious R412/R413 is is that sarcasm? Oz isn't a popular candidate, Republicans are still outraged by Trump's endorsement of him over McCormick, they even booed Oz at his own campaign rally. He's a carpetbagger like McCormick but McCormick believes all of the MAGA BS he spews, Oz is a RINO and everyone knows it.

How will Fetterman's stroke shake up the race?

by Anonymousreply 418May 16, 2022 8:21 PM

Have the GOP candidates let their surrogates question Dr Oz's religion ?

R420, a TIA IS a stroke--a small one, but still stroke and a harbinger of things to come

by Anonymousreply 421May 16, 2022 8:39 PM

My friend had a stroke at fifty-one. Then he had another one a few weeks later and was brain dead and they took him off life support.

Strokes are bad news.

by Anonymousreply 422May 16, 2022 8:48 PM

R416 What you are failing to understand is that the GOP is no longer your parents' party. Today's GOP does not vote based on candidates. It looks like Oz will be the GOP nominee, but it really doesn't matter. In a general election, that cult will vote for whoever has the "R" by their name. They've been conditioned to hate Democrats more than even considering what might be in the country's (or even THEIR OWN) best interest.

by Anonymousreply 423May 16, 2022 9:07 PM

If Dr. Oz wins the Primary, Kathy Barnette will go apeshit with accusations of election fraud. She lost her Congressional race in 2020 to Democrat Madeleine Dean by more than TWENTY points, and she refused to concede and went door to door demanding to know who people voted for. She's a batshit crazy election-denier and she will not be ignored if she loses.

by Anonymousreply 425May 16, 2022 11:24 PM

R423, I think a lot of people are confused about this: Trump isn't the cause of white supremacy in the GOP, white supremacy is the cause of Trump.

Oz is a Turkish Muslim from Hollywood who fought for the Turkish Army (say the attack ads). His very being is an attack on the base.

But I digress. I think your take is too simplistic, much like we thought, "enough people will vote for Hillary, so I won't have to" or "the court will never overturn Roe". Or "Trump is clearly a moron, no one would elect him."

We are not in Kansas anymore.

by Anonymousreply 426May 16, 2022 11:36 PM

If the doctors busted the blood clot in time, Fetterman should be fine with no lasting damage. And it seems like they did.

by Anonymousreply 427May 17, 2022 12:00 AM

Fetterman has already won. The D votes are in by mail. It's the Republicans who wait until election day in PA (and other states).

The R primary is a total tossup. If Barnette loses by a little, its because she caught fire too late to catch up to the votes already cast by mail.

There is no poll that will instruct you on this race if it's Fetterman vs. Oz or McCormick. Check back in October. Until then, it's going to be fluid or unreadable. Even if one side or another seems to have a polling lead, either side could win. Oz is at a huge disadvantage due to his not living in the state AND being a muslim. Lots of muslim hate in the parts of PA where he would need to do very well to offset the Philly and the Philly suburbs. (If he's not really a muslim, guess what, to those voters, he is). If he loses tonight, that will be the #1 reason.

Barnette is like Todd Akin, Sharon Angle or Christine O'Donnell. DOA if she gets the nomination.

If McCormick wins the nomination and there's any type of red wave in November, he will probably win. He is exactly the type of Republican that suburban PA voters tend to go for.

by Anonymousreply 478May 18, 2022 4:17 AM

Yes r478. I’ve been waiting since 2012. It is overdue. We also have an actual labor movement again, if we can take both houses (almost impossible odds) then with people like Fetterman in Congress, we could actually pass BBB. Fetterman can also easily destroy Manchin, and quite frankly if he’s smart, he should make Manchin his project. I actually do NOT want Manchin to go because we get his votes some of the time — but what is his number one motivator? Is it the power? Or the greed? Or just the money? We need to know what it’s about for him, abc then give him mire of that. Fetterman needs to build a Manchin/Sinema Hit Squad, force them to bend to our will, or destroy. You can’t have it both ways. Also, the Dems should consider primaring them (obviously only if we have the right candidate). Start whipping these whores asses into obedience to party leaders. I think the uncounted cites are mostly mail-in. Kornacki said the mail-in votes will mostly favor the “non-Trumpy” candidate, McCormick. The Trump supporters, who will likely vote for Oz, mostly believe that mail-in voting is fraudulent, due to Trump’s election lies.

R522 / R526 I pity you because you are fucking stupid enough to think Lurch has the intelligence and charisma to go change Washington! 😂

Don't get me wrong, I want the goon to win, only because all Republicans are Shit on toast! But you're delusional if you think he is some kind of savior. He's not. He's gonna think people care what some idiotic freshman Senator from PA has to say. They won't. He needs to fucking fall in line with the Democrats, learn his job and cross his fingers that lightning will strike twice and he can get re-elected, assuming he lives long enough. And you must think your opinion matters to me. But I can tell you, it doesn't. 😂😂😂

by Anonymousreply 528May 20, 2022 2:13 AM

Moron @528 et ali,

Just by converting a red senate seat to blue, Fetterman is a hero.

When you look at a freshman senator like Marshie The Cunt in TN, with her degree in Home Economics and fire baton twirling, he is a great improvement and addition to the Dem Senate majority.

by Anonymousreply 529May 20, 2022 6:13 AM

R519, And let's thank our lucky stars for that!

Democrats don't always need to have a noblesse oblige candidate.

by Anonymousreply 530May 20, 2022 7:08 PM

^Fetterman comes from wealth & is Harvard-educated.

by Anonymousreply 531May 20, 2022 8:18 PM

The people who keep talking about Fetterman's family, background & education haven't expressed any concern over Lamb's family & education.
But Lamb may find himself in a similar predicament as McAuliffe, trapped as an avatar of the Democratic party’s monied interests, having received over $100,000 in campaign contributions from PNC Bank executives and employees since his first congressional run in the 2018 cycle. Over $28,000 of that sum came from his father, a lobbyist and senior executive for the bank, and his wife, according to campaign finance records reviewed by The Intercept.
Lamb’s father, Thomas Lamb, has worked for Pittsburgh-based PNC since 1995, serving as a federal lobbyist for the bank from 2001 to 2011 and a state-level lobbyist from 2007 right up to today. With cash flowing from PNC bank executives to Conor Lamb’s campaign for U.S. Senate — $23,400 of which landed in the third quarter of this year, including two maximum contributions from PNC’s CEO, William S. Demchak — it seems likely that Lamb, as senator, would share his father’s pro-business perspective. In fact, upon his inauguration to the House of Representatives in 2018, the younger Lamb’s first vote in Congress bucked his own party and joined a majority of Republicans to exempt banks worth up to $10 billion in assets from the Dodd-Frank Act’s Volcker Rule, which prohibits banks from engaging in risky speculative trading. Lamb’s father, disclosure records reveal, had lobbied on the Dodd-Frank act.

r533, et alii, I enjoy living in your head. From your posts, people would expect it to be quite large, but I find it a cramped little space.

Fetterman will be a hero flipping PA Blue. He can take his time learning the ropes; he knows he is valued as a party vote.

You seem to think that your sad opinions are dicta.

by Anonymousreply 535May 21, 2022 6:14 AM

Fetterman has plainly said he will vote with Democrats to get President Biden’s agenda passed. He’s unequivocal about that. Lamb is not to be trusted…he’s bought and paid for by corporate interests. Although he’s about to be unemployed soon anyway.

by Anonymousreply 536May 21, 2022 11:48 AM
Although he’s about to be unemployed soon anyway.

Watch the heads explode if/when Lamb's offered a job in the Biden administration.

by Anonymousreply 537May 21, 2022 12:17 PM

Lamb’s not going anywhere. He’s a golden boy. He’ll never not have some sort of political job or consultancy job at some fucking foundation or PAC or bank or defense contractor board or law firm, or some shit like that. All the while being talked up as a potential VP candidate for any future Dem nominee who needs a boring white man from a swing state (“Conor Lamb would guarantee you Pennsylvania!”).

EXACTLY! Fetterman is just another politician with an over-inflated sense of self worth. And I see his fangirls here cheering his delusional ass on!

As much as most of us wanted Hillary to beat Trump, let's not rewrite History. She was/is just another superior White Bitch who felt entitled to the job. In 2008 she underestimated Barack Obama and then in 2016 she underestimated the worst presidential candidate in US history. How many timers are Democrats gonna force LOSERS like Hillary, Bernie and Fetterloon (not my term, but I'm stealing it 😂) on the Party?

by Anonymousreply 545May 22, 2022 6:14 PM

Bernie was CHEATED!

by Anonymousreply 546May 22, 2022 7:57 PM

I stumbled on an airing of “Election” this morning and watched it through. It seemed eerily relevant to Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaigns. There was no doubt that Tracy Flick was the better candidate, but she was so hated that her ceiling was just around fifty percent.

To win, Hillary had to run a perfect campaign and also be lucky. She did neither.

by Anonymousreply 547May 22, 2022 8:52 PM

^ It didn’t help that Hillary was running to succeed a two-term president of her own party. Other than GHW Bush getting elected after Reagan, there’s not much precedence for that.

by Anonymousreply 548May 23, 2022 1:17 PM

Nor precedence for the Russian meddling.

by Anonymousreply 549May 23, 2022 1:23 PM

Neither Russian meddling nor two terms of a Democratic President explain 2008. She created that herself by trying to be a hawk on Iraq. I like her a lot, but she is not only a victim of others.

by Anonymousreply 550May 23, 2022 2:30 PM

Hillary being an Iraq hawk did not lose the election for her, r550.

by Anonymousreply 551May 23, 2022 2:45 PM

I can’t imagine anyone who was around in 2008 would dispute that, r551. The progressive left rallied around Obama for precisely that reason - because he was against the war. What is your explanation?

by Anonymousreply 552May 23, 2022 2:52 PM

Obama was against the war, R552, when a mere state senator. Any US Senator with presidential ambitions, be it Hillary, John Kerry or Biden, voted in favor of the invasion.

by Anonymousreply 553May 23, 2022 4:26 PM

Yes, I know that, r553. As an Obama supporter during the primaries, I also know why many supported him. His opposition to the war is what set him apart and what gave him an opening against Clinton. It was a core theme if his campaign that he - and not the others - were against the war from the start.

What really is the prognosis for John Fetterman, the Democratic Senate nominee from Pennsylvania who had a stroke on May 13?

The 52-year-old lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania clinched his party’s nomination just a few days later, setting up one of the most consequential Senate contests of the midterm elections. But urgent medical questions remain.

He was discharged from the hospital, his campaign said on Sunday, and Mr. Fetterman has said doctors assured him that he would make a complete recovery — but the campaign has not said when he will be able to return to campaigning.

“I am going to take the time I need now to rest and get to 100 percent so I can go full speed soon and flip this seat blue,” Mr. Fetterman said in a statement on Sunday, adding that he felt “great” but intended to “continue to rest and recover.”

With such an important race in the balance, one that could decide the Senate majority, the state of Mr. Fetterman’s health is of intense public interest. Yet, despite repeated requests, his campaign did not make him or his doctors available to discuss his stroke and his medical treatment.

And specialists in stroke, heart disease and electrophysiology said that some of the campaign’s public statements do not offer a sufficient explanation for Mr. Fetterman’s described diagnosis or the treatment they say he has received.

The stroke, he said in a statement released by his campaign, was caused by a blood clot. He said the clot was the result of atrial fibrillation, a condition in which the upper chambers of the heart beat chaotically and are out of sync with the lower chambers of the heart. The campaign said the clot was successfully removed by doctors at a nearby community hospital, Lancaster General Hospital.

On May 17, the day of the primary election, Mr. Fetterman had a pacemaker and a defibrillator implanted in his heart which, his press office said in a statement, “will help protect his heart and address the underlying cause of his stroke, atrial fibrillation (A-fib), by regulating his heart rate and rhythm.” His press office said he is expected to fully recover from his stroke.

Medical specialists asked questions about Mr. Fetterman’s treatment with a defibrillator. They say it would make sense only if he has a different condition that puts him at risk of sudden death, like cardiomyopathy — a weakened heart muscle. Such a heart condition may have caused the blood clot. Or, the doctors say the campaign could be correct about afib causing the clot.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 556May 24, 2022 8:05 PM

Thrombectomy, the method likely used to remove the clot, also indicates that Mr. Fetterman experienced more than a tiny stroke, although prompt treatment may have averted damage and saved his brain.

“I was just in the hospital for over a week,” Mr. Fetterman said in a statement. “I am aware that this is serious, and I am taking my recovery seriously.”

In a brief interview on May 20, Gisele Barreto Fetterman, Mr. Fetterman’s wife, told the story of his stroke, from her perspective.

“We had been on the road campaigning,” she said. “We had had breakfast, and he was feeling fine.”

The couple got into a car to go to an event at Millersville University when, she said, “the left side of his mouth drooped for just a second.”

“I had a gut instinct that something was happening,” Ms. Fetterman said. “I yelled to the trooper, ‘I think he’s having a stroke.’ He said, ‘I’m fine. What are you talking about? I feel fine.’”

The state trooper soon drove Mr. Fetterman to Lancaster General Hospital where his treatment began. Ms. Fetterman said it involved going through his groin, which suggests he had a thrombectomy, a procedure in which doctors slide a small plastic tube through the groin, advance it into the brain and then pull the blood clot out using suction or a wire mesh.

It was not until two days later that his campaign reported that Mr. Fetterman had been hospitalized with a stroke. Asked about the delay, Ms. Fetterman said, “Less than 48 hours is pretty impressive timing when dealing with sensitive medical issues.”

Shortly after that question, Rebecca Katz, a senior adviser in Mr. Fetterman’s campaign, abruptly ended the call with Ms. Fetterman.

Medical specialists said that some aspects of the story were difficult to reconcile with their knowledge of stroke treatment.

Dr. Lee Schwamm, a stroke specialist at Massachusetts General Hospital and professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School, said doctors do a thrombectomy only when a large artery in the brain is blocked.

“You typically wouldn’t do it for someone with just a little bit of facial droop,” he said. Dr. Schwamm wondered if the doctors who examined Mr. Fetterman in the hospital had noticed other symptoms, like a loss of vision on his left side or lack of awareness of his left side, often called “neglect.”

“These strokes tend to be very severe,” Dr. Schwamm said. “He is fortunate that he went to a hospital that could treat it.”

Pressed about the stroke symptoms as described by Ms. Fetterman, a spokesman for Mr. Fetterman wrote in an email that he “told The Associated Press last week that Gisele ‘noticed that John was not himself, and shortly after he started slurring his speech.’”

by Anonymousreply 557May 24, 2022 8:07 PM

He is the strangest looking man ever. But I am glad he is doing so well, and I hope he wins.

by Anonymousreply 558May 24, 2022 8:08 PM

But what caused the stroke?

Ms. Fetterman said her husband knew he had atrial fibrillation, which confers a high risk of stroke, and that he had taken anticoagulants, a standard method of reducing the stroke risk in people with atrial fibrillation, “on and off.”

But the treatment with a pacemaker and defibrillator is a puzzle if all he had was atrial fibrillation, medical specialists said.

“This doesn’t entirely make sense,” said Dr. Brahmajee Nallamothu, an interventional cardiologist at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Elaine Wan, an associate professor of medicine in cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology at Columbia University Medical Center, said defibrillators — which always come with pacemakers — are used to prevent sudden death. They usually are implanted in people with weakened heart muscle, or those who survived an episode in which the heart stopped, or in people with a genetic predisposition for sudden cardiac death.

“We would not use it for atrial fibrillation,” Dr. Wan said.

Dr. Rajat Deo, an associate professor of medicine and a cardiac electrophysiologist at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine, agreed about the use of defibrillators and said he shared Dr. Wan’s suspicion that Mr. Fetterman has a damaged heart.

“I think it would be fair to say he has at least two separate issues,” Dr. Deo said of Mr. Fetterman. “One is afib, from which he most likely suffered a stroke that was successfully treated.”

He added, “The second issue is that he likely has some underlying cardiac condition that increases his risk for ventricular arrhythmias and thus sudden cardiac death.”

The afib could be related to the other condition, Dr. Deo said. Patients with a weakened heart muscle are also at risk of developing atrial fibrillation.

On the other hand, Dr. Deo says, Mr. Fetterman’s atrial fibrillation may have nothing to do with his weakened heart. Without more information from his doctors it is impossible to know.

Dr. Deo added that if Mr. Fetterman is receiving appropriate state-of-the-art medical therapies and is protected with a defibrillator from sudden cardiac death, “he should do quite well while he continues his campaign.”

Experts also raised concerns about the prospects for former Vice President Dick Cheney, who had a defibrillator implanted in 2001. He finished two terms in the White House, including a hard-fought re-election in 2004.

And there is time before general election campaigning in Pennsylvania begins in earnest: It is unclear who Mr. Fetterman’s opponent will be, as the Republican race remains too close to call and may head to a recount.

But Dr. Wan was less sanguine than Dr. Deo about Mr. Fetterman.

“He is at risk for sudden cardiac death,” she said. “For someone on the campaign trail that might raise concerns.”

That last quote is ominous.

by Anonymousreply 560May 24, 2022 8:09 PM

People in politics can live a very long time with heart conditions if they receive the appropriate treatment. That ghoul Dick Cheney is still going strong after a heart transplant. Bill Clinton and Mitch McConnell have both had coronary bypass surgery. Bernie Sanders had a heart attack during the last Presidential campaign.

HRC should never have been the Democratic candidate in 2016. This happenstance was due directly to her and Obama's hubris---their desire to be the first and the Queenmaker to the first Woman POTUS, respectively.

Obama had a perfectly fine, capable, logical, and historically appropriate choice in his Vice-President.

You can't argue with success, unless you're an apparent troll like R578. Dems NEVER win the white vote. Don't even come close. That Fetterman has a lead, however narrow, however early, is very predictive of his electoral chances. If the House is lost, at least Dems can keep the more important Senate, by flipping this seat.
