“Girl from Plainville”
This could be juicy — the story of DL fave Michelle Carter, who successfully encouraged her “boyfriend” Conrad to commit suicide, will be on Hulu starring Elle Fanning.
When she told her parents Conrad was dead, they replied “Who’s Conrad?” Lol!
I wonder if they take her side?

Chloe Sevigny is in this because she has to eat? She’s not believable as a mother. Maybe a sick white trash mother.

Chloe Sevigny was very good in The Act with Joey King and Patricia Arquette, as the ball-busting neighbour who was suspicion of Arquette’s character’s Munchausen-by-Proxy grift.

I watched the HBO documentary and read some of their back and forth text messages. It's eye opening to see how it spiraled between these two mentally ill teenagers.
Wasn't she a lesbian? There was one message where she suggested sleeping together and he was like, wait what, really? She backpedaled out of it.
It's almost like she couldn't find a solution to help him and got tired of his depressive whining. Milking his death for attention was the icing on the cake. Very smart of her lawyer to have her decline a jury.

I remember the Lifetime movie and how Bella Thorne was "uglied" up for the role with the eyebrows. Elle Fanning looks more like Michelle Carter than Bella Thorne does.
A similar situation happened with the DeeDee and Gypsy Rose Blanchard case, Lifetime made a movie based on the case. They changed the names for the movie. Then a couple of months later, Hulu released the limited series The Act.

I watched the first three episodes and certain things come off as cringeworthy, it seems to be done on purpose to show how fucking weird Michelle is/was. Also, Conrad's family isn't portrayed in the best light. That's likely done to align with some of news articles/stories that went around about how the parents had contentious divorce and how the grandfather was a verbal abuser. I'm betting the show will also involved a noted incident involving the mother that Michelle's defense team brought up in legal proceedings.
I did get a chuckle in one scene involving the Catholic grandfather discussing religion and death because I have relatives with similar attitudes regarding religion and cremation. Chloe's performance is average at best and it seemed Norbert Leo Butz's accent seemed to change around in episodes. I thought Chloe was better in The Act than this show. Maybe, performances will improve. So, far it's not bad, but not great.

I thought having Connor do a musical number from beyond the grave just because he’s a Broadway star was hokey, but then I realized they were dressed like Rachel and Finn from Glee so it was a shout back to when she was modeling her speech about Conrad’s death on Rachel’s talk before singing about Finn dying.

Does anyone else feel like this show has gone off the rails? Started out strong but I'm finding the trial parts so boring and the extended shit about Conrad and his parents boring too. Conrad was a needy whiny pain in the ass - it's crazy to me that they sent this troubled teenage girl to jail for a year over this.
If you watch the HBO documentary - the real life prosecutor is actually MORE obnoxious than Aya Cash (difficult to achieve, I agree). If she ever read the responses on DL to the "I'm suicidal" threads - she would lock us all up. MARY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What do parents of damaged people like Michelle do? Who do you cope with a kid like that?
She does all the “right things” - is outgoing, plays sports, but she’s a personality people run from.
More therapy?
Whereas Conrad (in the show) should have finished school by correspondence and continued working. What a nightmare to return to that place after a suicide attempt.

Yes, it’s all over the place. Also - I don’t feel much sympathy for Conrad like I’m probably supposed to, he’s whiny and immature- that scene where he walked out at work to play video games then caught an attitude with his father when he called him on it? He is emotionally manipulative with his whole “goodbye world”/“I fell asleep, what did I miss?” Flip flop bullshit
by Anonymous | reply 67 | April 28, 2022 6:57 PM

LOLLLL r66.
Something interesting from the HBO documentary is that the Judge based his guilty finding on Conrad getting out of the car and calling Michelle and Michelle allegedly telling him to get back in. Apparently that specific moment made it manslaughter because she had a "duty" to tell him not to do it and call 911, etc. Anyway, Michelle's lawyer pointed out that no one has a recording of what was actually said during that call, they are basing this entirely on some stupid text message Michelle sent one of those girls she was trying so desperately to befriend - the one where she said "I told him to fucking get back in" or whatever. The prosecution used that as a "confession." Michelle's lawyer was saying how wrong it was to rely so heavily on one text a mentally ill teenage girl sent a friend - when she sent 1000 other text messages to Conrad telling him how much she loved him and how he would miss him if he died, etc. The lawyer was saying how the prosecutor was picking and choosing what text messages she wanted for her narrative, when in reality, their relationship was much more complicated.

R70 What I’m bothered by is that he is just playing the same character that he did on Bloodlines, like a complete cut and paste job from that show. He was either completely typecast, and should have thought twice about taking it, or he was too lazy to develop a real character and put in the work. And his performance is like he’s sleep walking through it with occasional grimaces. That said I could totally buy Chloe and Norbert as a real life couple.

Would have been better if it was 4 episodes or as someone said - a tv movie. Thought it was clever how they turned the texting into conversations between the two of them. The pacing just felt off and it seems like they went from developing their relationship and her issues escalating with the eating disorder right to the trial.

I feel badly for Conrad. To be that broken that young is tragic. Eyebrows girl had some weird ass personality disorder ( she seemed to live in a fantasy world) but I think the legal case against her was stretched. There have been cases of schoolyard bullying that lead to suicide that were far more extreme and never lead to prosecution. The more I read about the details surrounding this incident, the more convoluted and complicated it becomes.

I just finished watching this and I enjoyed it more than many of the posters upthread.
I was out for her blood when this story broke. Having watched this, I’ve changed my mind. What she did was awful of course, but she was 18 and more so now than probably at any time before, 18 year olds are so detached from reality, they’re like seven year olds in previous generations.
She was obviously deep in a digital fantasy world, longing to be loved and accepted. What better way to get that then to be the brave, tragic girlfriend of a suicide, who’s then there for the suicides mother. Once he made it clear he wasn’t going to shut the fuck up about killing himself, she clearly turned, and from that point on his suicide became part of her bigger narrative.
And who was he, anyway? Some guy she had met … what? Two times? Three?
It should go without saying I don’t approve or accept what she did. But I think I understand it.
