As a follow-up to the Bee Gees and Elton John favorite number one song, I was about to do the same with the Carpenters. Karen and Richard had three number one songs (Close To You, Top Of The World, Please Mr. Postman). But I figured it would be a blowout for Close To You, so instead I'll go with their songs that peaked at number 2. (They are tied with Credence Clearwater Revival for most songs that peaked at number 2....five each).
Favorite Carpenters Number TWO Song?

I listen to Yesterday Once More the most.

Wow - I would have put all of those number 2 songs above Top of the World and Mr. Postman.
I would say Superstar. For their songs that did not make the top 2 spots, would possibly say Solataire.

Rainy Days and Mondays
Really hard to choose.

Superstar is an incredible song and my vote. TBH, I was raised on Luther’s cover, but discovered the original as a teenager and have loved The Carpenters ever since.
We’ve Only Begun is also a signature song and fucking awesome as well.
Thanks for this thread, OP!

You weren't supposed to know about our "Number Two Song."
That was something very private between me and Karen, man.

Yes - I said Superstar as my personal favorite, but We've Only Just Begun and Rainy Days and Mondays are probably the two that people think of as a couple of their signature songs. in general, I like sad or longing Karen over chipper and happy Karen (song-wise, I wish she had a happier life). For their Christmas album, any of the songs that have a touch of melancholy in them are much more listenable than the peppier songs.

R6, then you must LOVE "Goodbye To Love"... have their ever been more downbeat lyrics in any song ever recorded?

On this horrendous day that a woman's right to choose has been obliterated, I have been listening to this jam. What a soothing voice and something that is telling me everything is gonna be ok

They were so talented. Especially Karen.
Karen said "the money's in the basement" in reference to the fact that fan's responded to her emotional low notes, which translated to higher record sales. I am a second bass and will people snap their heads around whenever I speak in public. They like-ah my voice. And I like-ah them back.
